It erodes the very fabric of society, depriving individuals of their dignity, opportunities, and sense of belonging. It is a form of discrimination that is based on someone's race or ethnicity, and it can have devastating effects on individuals and communities.Racism can manifest in many different ways, from overt acts of violence and hate speech to more subtle forms of prejudice and bias. Regardless of how it presents itself, racism is harmful and unjust. One of the most insidious aspects of racism is that it often goes unnoticed or unacknowledged by those who are not directly affected by it. This can be done through open and honestconversations, advocacy and activism, and challenging one's own beliefs and behaviors. In order to truly combat racism, it is essential for people to come together and support one another.

A Discussion about Racism in English 课程名称:社会语言学任课教师:刘承宇专业:英语班级:2009级(翻译)4班学号:222009310012080姓名:陈小培2012年12月30日西南大学外国语学院制AbstractAs a kind of social phenomenon, racism can be seen in language. There are many expressions which contain racism both in Britain English and American English. As we all know, racism, as a kind of social phenomenon which exists in English language, must function as the tool of social communication and will also influence our social life, such as in the aspect of economic, political, cultural and psychological life. This thesis can be classified into 3 parts. The first part is the introduction. And the introduction contains the definition of racism and the reasons of racism in English language. The second part discusses those vocabularies and expressions about racism in English language. Specifically speaking, we will talk about vocabularies and expressions that used to discriminate against black people, Chinese and Dutch in English. The last part is the conclusion. It will be about how can we treat those expressions about racism in cross-cultural communication.Key words: English language, racism, expressions, cross-cultural communicationChapter1 Introduction1.1 Definition of RacismAccording to the 7th edition of Oxford Advanced Learner‟s English-Chinese Dictionary (2009), the definition of racism is “the unfair treatment of people who belong to a different race; violent behavior towards them”. From the definition we can see, racism is the unfair and violent treatment that a race for another. In English, specifically speaking, racism is the unfair and violent behaviors and discriminations that British and American people exert on people from other races or countries. Racism can be seen in many perspectives of our social life, such as in economic, political and psychological life. Overall, racism expressed by language can be classified into two categories as below: one is that the racial discrimination contains in the whole sentence instead of the words which form the sentence. For instance, in Zhang and Liu…s (2005) article, “one Englishman can beat three Frenchmen” and “the Italian are wise before the deed, the German in the deed, the French after the deed”, and there is a similar example in Wang‟s (2000) book: “An American will go to hell for a bag of coffee.” Another is the vocabulary itself contains the implication of racial discrimination, for example, the word “negro” is a despisal for the black people.1.2 Reasons of RacismRace and language are closely related with each other. Once the certain language is mastered by a certain race, this language will be filled strong emotion by the race. Then undue favor for the language would be formed if things go on like this. This kind of undue favor encourages people insist on speaking the language even though defects are obvious, they do not want to change or reform. What‟s more, the development of Ethnocentrism will strengthen this undue favor. In a word, the main reasons of racism are strong national sense of pride and national priority. A race must have its own standard about its behaviors, traditions and manners. And she uses her own standard to evaluate other races. Then the outcome is obvious, that is, the race is superior to others. So, expressions and vocabularies in language emerge automatically. On the strength of economic power, both British people and Americansbelieve they are the strongest in the world, they look down upon any other race. So, English language is full of vocabularies and expressions contain racism meaning.Of course, the reasons of racism are not limited only in national sense of pride and national priority, since national enmities and national conflicts can also lead to racism between different races. Such as in the WWI, the Great Britain and Germany were belonged to different camps, so, the British people called the German “Jerry” and Germen called British people “Tommy”.Chapter2 Racism in EnglishRacism in language is mainly expressed in the system of vocabulary, for in the three elements of language----pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, the reflection of vocabulary on language is the most direct and fast. Meaning of vocabulary can be classified into reference meaning (denotation) and connotation. And racism in language is mainly contains in connotation.2.1 Racism against Black PeopleAs we all know, in the long history of human being‟s development, black people are the most miserable races. For a long period, black people have always be discriminated by the white people and some non-black races. Although black people in America has been liberated, they are still be discriminated by American white people in social life. According to Zeng (2003), the phrase “work like Negro” means “working as a slave or a beast”. In America, the social status of black people is very low. Generally speaking, they belong to the lowest social class. Not only can not they be treated fairly, but also they have been nicknamed many offensive nicknames. For instance, “Negro”, “Negress”, ”Negroid”and “Nigger”are the typical offensive nicknames that Americans gave black people. What‟s more, the truth is not just as below. In English language, expressions and phrases about the word “black”contain derogatory sense more or less. And the word “black” is always been related to evil things, devil and dirty things. For example, blackguard, blacklist, black mark, black sheep and black lie, etc. And in English culture, black is a kind of miserable color, so widows should dress in black. And black is also a evil color, so the evil magic is called “black art”. All in all, black is a color against white. White peopleuse the word “black” to discriminate against the black.2.2 Racism against DutchThe social status of the Dutch in English countries is not better than black people, since we can also find the truth from the English language itself. The racial discrimination against the Dutch can be dated back to hundreds of years ago. The Great Britain and the Netherlands had waged war against each other in order to fight for the maritime supremacy, and from then, the two countries had become enemies. And the racial discrimination against the Dutch can be found in expressions about the word “Dutch”, that is, according to Liu(1990), “those expressions which are about ‘Dutch’are always offensive”. For example, “Dutch act” means committing suicide; “Dutch auction” means dishonest business; “Dutch comfort” means useless comfort; “Dutch defense” means fake defense; “Dutch widow”is used to describe a prostitute; “Dutch uncle”is used to describe a person who is arrogant and always curses others. And if you hear a people saying: “Well, I‟m a Dutchman”, then his real meaning is that he does not believe you. And according to Wang (2000), “Dutchmen have become the byword of ‘he is not a man’in Chinese”.2.3 Racism against FrenchmenThe racial discrimination against Frenchmen is mostly because of governance that French for the Great Britain. The essence of “French disease” is syphilis; “French letter” is a different expression for the condom; “French lunar pill” refers to pill that will cause an abortion; “French novels/print” is a book or a picture contains obscene content. Besides, Americans had created many phrases and expressions to scoff at and mock Frenchmen. The phrase “French way/trick /culture” means making love, so, “French lesson” refers to lessons that teach skills about making love. According to Zeng(2003), the phrase “excuse/pardon my French” means “Excuse me, I must curse”, for example, “Excuse the swear words I’ll use. Excuse my French, but he is a bloody nuisance”.2.4 Racism against ChineseWhether in Britain or the United States, Chinese people are always being discriminated by the white. In 19th century, many Chinese immigrants were working as coolies, so, from since then, Chinese people were labeled “people with no mind”onpurpose. And according Li(2001), “Chinese” even can be used to refer to heroin, “Chinese white” refers to high-concentration heroin, and “Chinese red”refers to common heroin. And according to Qian(1981), “China-man’s ch ance is a phrase to portray a hopeless expectation, and the origin of the phrase can be dated back to the Gold Craze in American history, since only after Americans panning for gold can Chinese people start to pan.” And in American English, the essence of the phrase “China syndrome”is “disastrous accidents”.Chapter3 ConclusionFrom the above analysis and discussion we can learn that the existence of racial discrimination in English language is an evitable truth. For we English language learners, on the one hand, we must admit the existence of racial discrimination in English language, and on the other hand, we should not exaggerate the functions of those expressions and phrases about racial discrimination. The reason is that with the development of our society, all kinds of languages are changing all the way. Since racism is just a language phenomenon in English, it will change as time pass by. We should treat racism in English with changing eyesight. That is to say, with the development, expressions and phrases about racial discrimination in English will change or even disappear in the future, so we English language learners should treat those expressions and phrases with a proper attitude. As we are all English language learners, it is inevitable that we will communicate with other native speakers or some other English language learners from other countries, so we should carefully use those expressions and phrases about racial discrimination in order not to hurt people from those cultures which are discriminated by English language. So, we must choice proper expressions and phrases when talking with people from other cultures in English, especially people from India, the Netherlands, France and those black people.Last but not least, if we must use those expressions and phrases about racial discrimination, we should first make clear that those expressions are only suitable for informal situations, that is, we can not use those expressions in form situations. Before ourspeaking, we should make clear the field of discourse, tenor of discourse and mode of discourse so that we can make a good cross-cultural communication.References1.Oxford Advanced Learner‟s English-Chinese Dictionary (7th ed.). 种族歧视英语作文英文回答:Racism is a serious issue that has plagued societies around the world for centuries. It is the belief that one race is superior to another, leading to discrimination and prejudice against individuals of different races. This can manifest in various forms, such as hate speech, violence, and systemic inequalities.I have personally witnessed racism in my own community, where people of color are often treated unfairly and face discrimination in various aspects of life. For example, I have seen instances where job opportunities were denied to individuals simply because of their race, or where students were bullied and ostracized at school because of their skin color.Racism not only affects the victims directly, but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and divides communities. Itis important for us to stand up against racism and promote equality and inclusivity. We must educate ourselves and others about the harmful effects of racism, and work towards creating a more just and equitable society for all.中文回答:种族歧视是一个严重的问题,已经困扰着世界各地的社会几个世纪了。

关于种族歧视的英语作文200

关于种族歧视的英语作文200英文回答:Racial discrimination is a pervasive issue that continues to plague societies around the world. It is a problem that affects individuals from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, leading to unequal treatment and opportunities. In this essay, I will discuss the impact of racial discrimination and explore possible solutions to address this issue.Firstly, racial discrimination has a significant impact on individuals who are subjected to it. It can lead to feelings of inferiority, low self-esteem, and a sense of exclusion from society. For example, a person of Asian descent may face discrimination when applying for a job, leading to a lack of career opportunities and financial stability. This not only affects the individual's well-being but also perpetuates a cycle of inequality and social injustice.Furthermore, racial discrimination can also have long-term consequences on a societal level. It can create divisions and tensions among different racial and ethnic groups, leading to social unrest and conflict. For instance, the history of racial discrimination in the United States has resulted in deep-rooted racial divides and ongoingracial tensions. These divisions hinder social cohesion and prevent the development of a harmonious and inclusive society. To address this issue, education plays a crucial rolein promoting understanding and acceptance of differentracial and ethnic backgrounds. By incorporating diverse perspectives and histories into the curriculum, studentscan develop empathy and respect for others. Additionally, schools can organize cultural exchange programs and workshops to foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. This can help break down stereotypes and promote inclusivity.Another solution is the implementation of anti-discrimination laws and policies. Governments should enact legislation that prohibits racial discrimination in all areas of life, including employment, housing, and education. These laws should be enforced effectively, and individuals who engage in discriminatory practices should face legal consequences. Moreover, organizations and businesses should adopt inclusive hiring practices and promote diversity in their workforce. This can create a more equitable and inclusive society where individuals are judged based ontheir abilities and qualifications, rather than their raceor ethnicity. In conclusion, racial discrimination is a pressingissue that requires immediate attention and action. It has detrimental effects on individuals and society as a whole. By promoting education and awareness, implementing anti-discrimination laws, and fostering inclusivity, we can work towards a more just and equal society for all.中文回答:种族歧视是一个普遍存在的问题,继续困扰着世界各地的社会。

种族歧视英文文章篇1:种族歧视In some countries where racial prejudice is acute, violence has so come to be taken for granted as a means of solving differences, that it is not even questioned. There are countries where the white man imposes his rule by brute force; there are countries wherethe black man protests by setting fire to cities and by looting and pillaging. Important people on both sides, who would in other respects appear to be reasonable men, get up and calmly argue in favor of violence – as if it were a legitimate solution, like any other. What is really frightening, what really fills you with despair, is the realization that when it comes to the crunch, we have made no actual progress at all. We may wear collars and ties instead of war-paint, but our instincts remain basically unchanged. The whole of the recorded history of the human race, that tedious documentation of violence, has taught us absolutely nothing. We have still not learnt that violence never solves a problem but makes it more acute. The sheer horror, the bloodshed, the suffering mean nothing. No solution ever comes to light the morning after when we dismally contemplate the smoking ruins and wonder whathit us.Before we can even begin to contemplate peaceful co-existence between the races, we must appreciate each other's problems. And to do this, we must learn about them: it is a simple exercise in communication, in exchanging information. “Talk, talk, talk,” the advocates of violence say, “all you ever do is talk, and we are none the wiser.”It's rather like the story of the famous barrister who painstakingly explained his case to the judge. After listening to a lengthy argument the judge complained that after all this talk, he was none the wiser. “Possible, my lord,” the barrister replied, “none the wiser, but surely far better informed.”Knowledge is the necessary prerequisite to wisdom: the knowledge that violence creates the evils it pretends to solve.种族歧视英文文章篇2:种族歧视According to the bourgeois racial and ethnic characteristics of people's social status and legal status of racial restrictions andviolations of other fundamental rights and freedoms of the phenomenon. 谈谈种族歧视英文作文Title: Understanding and Combating Racial Discrimination。

Racial discrimination remains a pervasive issue in societies worldwide, encompassing various forms of prejudice, bias, and systemic inequality. It is a complex phenomenon deeply rooted in historical, social, and economic structures, often perpetuated by ignorance, fear, and stereotypes. Addressing this multifaceted problem requires concerted efforts at both individual and societal levels, involving education, advocacy, policy reforms, and fostering empathy and understanding.First and foremost, education plays a pivotal role in combating racial discrimination. By promoting awareness of the historical contexts and impacts of racism, educational institutions can empower individuals to challenge stereotypes, recognize privilege, and cultivate empathy towards marginalized communities. Comprehensive curriculumreforms that integrate diverse perspectives and histories are essential in fostering inclusive learning environments and nurturing future generations to become allies in the fight against racial injustice.Furthermore, advocacy and activism are crucial in raising awareness and mobilizing support for racial equality. Grassroots movements, social media campaigns, and community organizing have proven effective in amplifying marginalized voices, holding institutions accountable, and driving meaningful change. By advocating for anti-discrimination policies, police reform, and equal access to resources and opportunities, activists can dismantle systemic barriers that perpetuate racial disparities and exclusion. Moreover, meaningful dialogue and cross-cultural understanding are essential in fostering solidarity and challenging prejudices. Engaging in open and respectful conversations about race, privilege, and allyship can bridge divides, dispel misconceptions, and promote empathy and mutual respect. Platforms for intercultural exchange, such as diversity workshops, cultural festivals, and multicultural events, provide opportunities for individuals from different backgrounds to connect, learn from each other, and celebrate diversity. At the same time, legislative and policy reforms are indispensable in addressing institutionalized racism and promoting equality under the law. Anti-discrimination laws, affirmative action policies, and diversity initiatives are essential tools in combating racial disparities in employment, housing, education, and healthcare. Additionally, reforming criminal justice systems to address racial profiling, police brutality, and mass incarceration is critical in ensuring equal treatment and justice for all individuals, regardless of their race or ethnicity. In conclusion, racial discrimination remains a deeply entrenched challenge that requires sustained efforts from individuals, communities, and institutions to overcome. By prioritizing education, advocacy, dialogue, and policy reforms, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society where every individual is valued and respected, regardless of their race or ethnicity. Together, we can build a future where diversity is celebrated, and racial discrimination is a relic of the past.。

种族歧视原因 英文作文

种族歧视原因 英文作文

种族歧视原因英文作文英文:Racism is a complex issue that has been prevalent in societies for centuries. There are various reasons why people discriminate against others based on their race or ethnicity. One of the main reasons is ignorance. People who have limited exposure to different cultures and races tend to hold onto stereotypes and prejudices. They may not have had the opportunity to interact with people from different backgrounds and therefore, have formed their opinions based on what they have heard or seen in the media.Another reason for racism is fear. Fear of the unknown can cause people to become defensive and hostile towards those who are different from them. This fear can be fueled by misinformation and propaganda. For instance, during times of war, governments often use propaganda to demonize the enemy and create a sense of fear and hatred towards them. This can spill over into society and lead todiscrimination against people who are perceived to be associated with the enemy. In addition, economic factors can also contribute to racism. When there is competition for jobs and resources, people may feel threatened by those who are different from them. They may perceive them as a threat to theirlivelihood and therefore, discriminate against them. Thisis particularly true in times of economic hardship when people are struggling to make ends meet. Finally, racism can also be passed down from generation to generation. Children often learn their attitudes towards race and ethnicity from their parents and other family members. If these attitudes are negative, then the children may grow up believing that it is acceptable to discriminate against others based on their race.中文:种族歧视是一个复杂的问题,已经在社会中存在了几个世纪。

西南大学本科生课程论文论文题目:A Discussion about Racism in English 课程名称:社会语言学任课教师:刘承宇专业:英语班级:2009级(翻译)4班学号:222009310012080姓名:陈小培2012年12月30日西南大学外国语学院制AbstractAs a kind of social phenomenon, racism can be seen in language.
