状语从句在复合句中起状语的作用，修饰主句中的谓语动词、形容词或副词。

状语从句由从属连词引导，从属连词在句中不充当句子成分，只起连接作用。

一、时间状语从句1．由连词when, whenever, as, while, after, before, until,till, since, once, as soon as等引导。

When the bell rang, the person was waiting in his seat.Three months went by before she knew it.2．由the minute, the moment, the instant, immediately,instantly, directly, the day, the week, the year, the first time, any time, next time, every time, each time, the last time, all the time, by the time等引导。

I recognized you the minute I saw you.The machine starts the moment the button is pressed.二、地点状语从句由连词where和wherever引导。

Make a mark where you have questions.在有疑问的地方做个记号。

Where there is plenty of sunlight and rain, the fields are green.哪里有充足的阳光和雨水，哪里的田地就绿油油的。

三、原因状语从句由because, as, since, now that引导。

四、目的状语从句由that, so that, in order that等引导，口语中so也可引导目的状语从句。

He took medicine on time so that he might get well sooner.他准时吃药，目的是想早日恢复健康。

Let's take the front seats in order that we may see more clearly.我们坐到前排去，以便可以看得更清楚些。

五、结果状语从句由so that, so ...that, such ...that等引导，口语中so ...that, such ...that中的that有时可以省略。

The engineer did not plan his time well so that he didn't finish his work on time.这位工程师没有计划好时间，所以没有按时完成任务。

In fact, his spokenEnglish was so good that the teacher praised him for it in class.事实上，他的英语口语非常好，以至于老师在课堂上表扬了他。

六、条件状语从句由if, unless, as long as, so long as等引导，另外，if only, only if, suppose/supposing, pr ovided/providing, on condition that, assuming, in case, granted/granting也可引导条件状语从句。

They said they would all leave if John stayed.他们说如果约翰留下，他们就都离开。

We can surely overcome these difficulties so long as we are closely united.七、方式状语从句由as, as if, as though等引导。

I'll do as I am told to.He heard a noise, as if someone was breathing heavily.八、让步状语从句由though, although, as, even if, even though, whoever, whatever, however, no matter wh o (what, how, when), whether, while等引导。

九、比较状语从句由as ...as, not as / so ...as, than, the more ...the more ...等引导。
