(A)Farming was once the chief way of life in nearly every country. People cannot live without food, and nearly all their food comes from crops and animals raised on farms. Many other materials such as cotton and wool also come from plants and animals raised on farms. Not many people farm for a living any more, but farming remains the most important work in the world at present. Before the nineteenth century, the typical American family lived on a small farm. They raised pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, and planted corn, beans, fruits, garden vegetables, rice, and wheat. Everyone worked long and hard, but the results were often poor. Families harvested just enough food for themselves. This situation began to change duri ng the last half of the 1800’s and it changed remarkably (明显地) in the following century.Scientific methods and labor-saving machinery have made farming increasingly productive in the US. The development of improved plant varieties and chemical fertilizers (肥料) has helped double and even triple (三倍) the production of some major crops. More scientific animal care and animal raising have helped increase the amount of meat and other products animals produce. At the same time, the use of tractors and other modern farm equipment has sharply reduced the need for farm labor. As farming has become less important as a way of life in the United States, it has become more important as a source which offers materials to industry. Today’s successful farmers are experts not just in agriculture but also in accounting (会计), marketing and finance (金融). Farms that are not run in a similar way have great difficulty competing.1. We are told in the first paragraph about _________.A. the history of farmingB. the development of farmingC. the importance of farmingD. the changes of farming2. Which of the following describes American farming before the 19th century?A. Farmers didn’t work hard on their farms.B. Farmers used tractors to help them.C. Farming was the main way of living for most people.D. Farmers could supply materials to industry.3. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?A. American farmers’ hard work.B. The increase in the number of crops in the US.C. Modern farming methods.D. Traditional American farming.(B)The "Thumbs-Up"While Western culture has become used to the thumbs-up as a positive signal (probably coming from World War II pilots using the signal to communicate that they were "good to go" with ground crews), there are cultures where a thumbs-up may land you in trouble. In West Africa, as well as Greece, Italy and Middle East, the thumbs-up is pretty much the biggest insult(侮辱).Rather more charming is a thumbs-up in Germany and in parts of Japan —they just see it as the hand signal for the number one.The "A-OK"This sign is mainly used by divers(潜水员)to mean "OK"(to prevent being confused with the thumbs-up sign, which means "rise"). Basically the meaning comes out as "great", or "completely fine". However, in a few countries in Europe, people may think you’re telling them that you think they’re a 'zero’.The "V-Sign"The sign comes in two formats: one with the palm faced outwards, and one with the palm inwards. In America they mean the same thing —"victory". However, if the outside of your hand is facing your target, you’re giving somebody a long-established insult in Great Britain and many English-speaking countries such as Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. Winston Churchill famously used the "incorrect" version of the V sign during the early years of the war, turning the outside inside later. The V sign is also considered rude in Italy. The "Corna"The corna hand gesture has most recently been adopted by fans of rock and heavy metal music. Nowadays many Americans use the gesture simply to mean "rock on", or in support of the University of Texas in Austin (known as the "Hook’em Horns"). Today it is still popular in Spain, Brazil and Slovakia (斯洛伐克) . Historically, however, the symbol possibly dates back to Ancient Greece.4. Which of the following signs doesn’t have an insulting meaning?A. The "Thumbs-Up".B. The "A-OK".C. The "Corna".D. The "V Sign".5. The pilots in World War II used to make the "Thumbs-Up"sign to show _________.A. the plane was very goodB. they were going to land on the groundC. the plane was ready to take offD. they were thankful to the ground crews6. What information can we get from the passage?A. The "V Sign" was first used by Winston Churchill.B. You are most likely to see the "Corna" in a heavy metal music concert.C. Italians often use the "Thumbs-Up" to praise others.D. The "A-OK" and the "Thumbs-Up" have the same meaning to divers.7. If you travel abroad, you ’d better not use the "V Sign" in ______________.A. Greece or ItalyB. Germany or JapanC. Spain or BrazilD. Ireland or Italy(C)Welcome to Germany’s largest theme park! But for many of us, it can be difficult. For those who aren’t so comfortable, you’ll berelaxed to know it’s a skill that you can develop. All it takes is preparation and practice. The first place to start is to realize that you need to appreciate cultural differences. To many people from English-speaking countries, Northern Europeans may seem too direct or unfriendly because they don’t make small talk. Germans don’t even have a word for it! While Americans and the British are work-oriented cultures, they do like to feel friendly with their colleagues. Often, just a few words about family or other interests are enough to put them at ease and increase the chances of a good working relationship. So, how do you do it? Well, there’s not one sure way. Of course, the question “How are you?” is an appropriate greeting or small talk starter in just about any culture. The weather is usually a safe topic in any culture. To help you make your next “small talk moment” less awkward, here are a few tips we’ve picked up from our travels and dealings with people all around the world.Northern Europeans like facts, politics and sport. In France, aloofness (冷漠) can be respected. It’s often wise t o avoid being too personal with your small talk. Southern Europeans and Latin American cultures communicate with a lot of emotion. Safe topics include family, friends and general hobbies. In India, people often communicate by asking about families or socia l matters. It’s polite to ask about plans for the weekend. Japanese don’t do handshakes, but they do exchange business cards. Silent gaps in conversation are considered polite, so don’t try to fill them. Appropriate small talk in China includes talking about your experiences in China. 12. Northern Europeans may make people from English-speaking countries think that they are NOT .A. stubbornB. honestC. friendlyD. hard-working13. It is implied in Paragraph 2 that Americans and the British make small talk at work in order to .A. know their colleagues’ familyB. know their colleagues’ interestsC. kill time when they have nothing to doD. have a good relationship with each other 14. What should you avoid doing when you are talking with a Frenchman?A. Talking about sport.B. Talking about politics.C. Showing your aloofness.D. Asking too personal questions.15. It is appropriate to talk full of emotion in .a. Latin American countries.b. Northern European countries.c. Southern European countries.d. Asian countries.A. a, cB. b, cC. c, dD. a, d(E)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

AWhy play games? Because they are fun, and a lot more besides. Following the rules…planning your next move… acting as a team member… these are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.Think about some of the games you played when you were in a primary school, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic and practical rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating. Many children’s games have a practical side. Children around the world play games to help them make preparations for work they will do as grown-ups. For example, some Saudi Arabian children show preference for a game called bones, which sharpens the precise hand-eye coordination needed in hunting. Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympics, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition and make a presentation of their talents. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a precious gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who has earned it and should be praised. For countries facing the pressure of natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it–some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope and power through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promisingfuture.Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.1.Through playing hide-and-seek, children are expected to learn to ________________.A. be a team leaderB. obey the basic rulesC. act as a grown-upD. predict possible danger2. According to the passage, why is winning Olympic medals so encouraging?A. It inspires peopl e’s deep love for the country.B. It proves the exceptional skills of the winners.C. It helps the country out of natural disasters.D. It earns the winners fame and fortune.3. Iribarne’s goal of forming the foundation is to __________________.A. bring fun to poor kidsB. provide soccer balls for childrenC. give poor kids a chance for a better lifeD. call on soccer players to help poor kids4. We can infer from the passage _______________________.A. Games benefit people all their livesB. Sports can get all athletes togetherB. People are advised to play games for fun D. Sports makes a country competitivenessBThinking is something you choose to do as a fish chooses to live in water. To be human is to think constantly. But thinking may come naturally without your knowing how you do it. Thinking about thinking is the key to critical(判断性的) thinking. When you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes to construct your own ideas. Otherwise, you might be controlled by others’ ideas. Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education. The word “critical”here contains a special meaning. It doesn’t mean taking one view against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily seen–beyond the pictures on TV which are often not consistent with reality, the untrue and controversial reports in the newspapers, and the faulty and contradictory reasoning.Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity. If you are curious about life and desire to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker. If you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker.Activities of the mind and higher-order reasoning are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time, and do not consist with the fast speed in today’s world: fast food, instant coffee, and self-developing film. If you are among the people who believe that speed is a measure of intelligence, you may learn something new from a story about Albert Einstein, who made great contributions to science during his life. The first time Banesh Hoffman, a contemporary scientist, was to consult Albert Einstein about his work, Hoffman was too nervous to speak. but Einstein was very considerate and immediately put Hoffman at ease bysaying, “Please go slowly. I don’t understand things quickly.”5.Critical thinking is important to us because if we don’t think critically, ______________.A.it will be hard for us to think naturally and fastB.we might be controlled by other people’s ideasC.we will follow the ideas of others naturallyD.we might be fooled by other people’s ideas6.If you are a critical thinker, you will ______________________.A. think deeply about different ideasB. trust the reports in the newspapersC. take one view against another viewD. criticize other people for their mistakes7. In the last paragraph, “something new” suggests that ___________________.A. the smarter you are, the faster you do thingsB. the faster you do things, the smarter you becomeC. speed can improve intelligenceD. intelligence is not decided by speed8. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Thinking and Critical ThinkingB. Understanding Critical ThinkingC. Thinking is Natural and HumanD. Thinking Fast Means IntelligenceCIn the near future, daily newspapers and monthly magazines will probably disappear. Electronic media can provide the same information faster and cheaper. The Internet, together with laptops and cellphones, makes it possible that almost everyone can at any time and in almost any place get some news for free or for few fees. You’ll browse the computer newspapers or magazines just like switching on TV. An electronic voice will tell you stories about the latest events. You’ll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. There are the predictions from the experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of home-based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers and magazines would unite printed and broadcast news, offering information and analyzing video images of news events. The continuing loss of readers will result in a small number of advertisements in newspapers. It makes no sense to spend millions of dollars to print ads. With the development of technology, more and more electronic medium have been created until now, but replacing the traditional newspapers and magazines has a long way to go, because the resistance to computer newspapers and magazines from journalism(新闻业) may be much stronger. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be not until the present journalists, who aren’t used to it, die off that the newspaper industry is not considered as an industry any longer. Anyway, technology is making the traditional newspapers and magazines disappear gradually.9. Computer newspapers and magazines have all the advantages except that ____________.A. they are more expensive than traditional newspapersB. you can choose the kind of voice you like to hearC. you can get more information from them easilyD. you can easily store information for the future use10. The underlined word “resistance” in the fifth paragraph probably means ____________.A. a thought which directs your actionB. a force that acts to stop something happeningC. a force that helps you do somethingD. an idea which is different from others11. We can infer from the passage that _________________.A. all technological developments are very importantB. traditional newspapers and magazines will disappear soonC. new things will replace the old ones in the futureD. traditional newspapers and magazines will be more popular12. The author writes the article to __________________.A. let people know the great development of the journalismB. tell readers what newspapers and magazines are like in the futureC. prove newspapers and magazines are not welcomed any moreD. say traditional newspapers and magazines are better than beforeDMy father often talks about his definition of success. He tells us that it isn’t measured in money or material things, but in love and joy. While my brothers and I were all raised together under the same roof, I wonder how different we can be sometimes. Four kids, four different life paths, personalities and ambitions. We must follow a different path to let our light shine, and that’s what makes us so unpredictable and unique. In today’s world, expecting every child’s education to be the same, progress at the same rate and be measured against the narrow standards of performances is not just outdated, it’s also harmful to young people.I experienced this disconnect(脱节) firsthand after graduating from college. I had many opportunities in front of me, but they didn’t test my limits and my creativity to pursue my passions. At first, I took a job at a big consulting firm. However, I couldn’t shake my passion for music. I had followed the somewhat predictable path of a college graduate, but I was crazy about how to become an artist. Now I am a nine-time Grammy Awards winner who has sold multiple Top 10 Albums.Imagine what it would look like if our schools were set up to help people discover and pursue a personal passion instead of a predictable path? The good news is that a number of individuals and organizations are finding new ways to innovate in education. The goal is tocreate more student-centered environments that help young people not just do better in school but also discover what they love.We can’t live lives of joy if we can’t discover what we love doing with our lives. So let each person discover the power and uniqueness of his or her own passion.13. What does the writer’s father think success should be measured in?A. Pleasure.B. Ability.C. Wealth.D. Fame.14. We can infer that the writer _________________________.A. is devoted to reforming the education systemB. pursued his passions once he left collegeC. realized his dream before his graduationD. finally became an outstanding singer15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Where there is a will, there is a way.B. Let every child’s light shine.C. All that glitters is not gold.D. AIt was Thanksgiving morning. I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step.“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow.“Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”“Am I rich? Pity, no!”I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too.I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.1.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?A.Lady, are you rich? A recent report said that 40%of Americans hate tipping. In America alone, tipping is a $16 billion-a-year industry. Consumers acting politely ought not to pay more than they have to for a given service. Tips should not exist. So why do they? The common opinion in the past was that tips both rewarded the efforts of good service and reduced uncomfortable feelings of inequality. And also, tipping makes for closer relations. It went without saying that the better the service, the bigger the tip.But according to a new research from Cornell University, tips no longer serve any useful function. The paper analyzes numbers they got from 2,547 groups dining at 20 different restaurants. The connection between larger tips and better service was very weak. Only a tiny part of the size of the tip had anything to do with the quality of service.Tipping is better explained, by culture than by the money people spend. In America, the custom came into being a long time ago. It is regarded as part of the accepted cost of a service. In New York restaurants, failing to tip at least l5% could well mean dissatisfaction from the customers. Hairdressers can expect to get l5%-20%, and the man who delivers your fast food $2. In Europe, tipping is less common. In many restaurants the amount of tip is decided by a standard service charge. In many Asian countries, tipping has never really caught on at all. Only a few have really taken to tipping.According to Michael Lynn, the Cornell papers' author, countries in which people are more social or outgoing tend to tip more. Tipping may reduce anxiety about being served by strangers. And Mr. Lynn says, “In America, where people are expressive and eager to mix up with others, tipping is about social approval. If you tip badly, people think less of you. Tipping well is a chance to show off."5. At the side of the pages totally, who wants to took at ads when the y’re online connecting with their friends? The privacy issue has already landed Facebook in hot water in Washington. In April. Senator Charles Schumer called on Facebook to change its privacy policy. He also urged the Federal Trade Commission to set guide lines for social networking sites. “I think the senator rightly communicated that we had not been clear about what the new products were and how people could choose to use them or not to use them,” Schrage admits.I suspect that whatever Facebook has done so far to invade our privacy, it’s only the beginning, which is why I’m considering cancelling my account. It is very free, has few restrictions and can be a great way to express feelings. Writing a poem is all about observing the world within you or around you.To write a poem, first you should begin with an idea or inspiration. Inspiration may come at any time unexpectedly. It may be a specific person, place or thing that causes some sort of strong emotion. Itmay be more of an abstract idea or release of emotion. After getting the idea, you can write down everything that comes to mind. Don’t think much and let all feelings pour out. Remember everything can be thrown out later. Then, you can think about its form and begin to organize thoughts. Poetry comes in many forms, from epic poetry that has a story to dramatic poetry intended to be performed. Try them all out. One will come naturally. Maybe different poems fit different forms. When you write a poem, think about both meter (韵律) and rhythm carefully, which are equally important in poetry. Meter is the fixed pattern of the poem, while rhythm refers to the sound when it is spoken. It is also important to use a lot of descriptive words. Create imagery (意象) with words, trying to make them attractive to all the senses. For auditory (听觉的) interest, try repeating of similar sounds in a sentence or phrase. All of this adds life and interest to a poem. After you finish your work, don’t be afraid to share your work with others. When others point out your weakness, accept and grow from it.16. What does the underlined word “restriction” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A. Change.B. Order.C. Limitation.D. Organization.17. When you begin to write a poem, you should first .A. begin with some specific personsB. come up with an ideaC. describe a famous placeD. organize your thoughts18. We can infer from the text that .A. writing poems needs imagination and the ability to use language wellB. people can get more ideas if they often share their poems with othersC. people should first learn to write epic poetry, then dramatic poetryD. people need to write down every feeling they want to release at a time19. What’s the purpose of the text?A. To tell readers how to write a poem.B. To encourage more people to write poems.C. To show what quality a good poem should have.D. To teach people how to appreciate poems.BA man was charged(指控) with first degree murder of a 79-year-old woman whom police said he scared to death. In an attempt to escape after a bank robbery, the 20-year-old Larry Whitfield broke into the home of Mary Parnell.Police say he didn’t touch Parnell but that she died after suffering a heart attack that was caused by terror. Can the guy be responsible for the woman’s death? Prosecutors(公诉人) said that he can, under the state’s murder rule, which allows someone to be charged with murder if he or she causes another person’s death while committing or fleeing from a felony crime like robbery---even if he or she doesn’t kill someone on purpose. But,medically speaking, can someone actually be frightened to death?Absolutely, no question about it.The body has a natural protective method called the fight-or-flight response(战或逃反应),which was originally described by Walter Cannon, the chairman of Harvard University’s physiology department from 1906 to 1942.If, in the wild,an animal is faced with a life-threatening situation, the autonomic nerve system responds by increasing heart rate, increasing blood flow to the muscles and slowing digestion. All of this increases the chances of succeeding in a fight or running away from an aggressive beast. This process certainly would be of help to ancient humans. However, in the modem world there is obvious decline of the fight-or-flight response. The autonomic nerve system uses the chemical messenger to send signals to various parts of the body to activate the fight-or-flight response. This chemical is toxic(有毒的) in large amounts;it damages the organs such as the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. It is believed that almost all sudden deaths are caused by damage to the heart. There is almost no other organ that would fail so fast as to cause sudden death.Kidney failure, liver failure, those things don’t kill you suddenly.By the way, any strong positive or negative emotions such as happiness or sadness can cause the same result. There are people who have died in strong emotions. There was a case of a golfer who hit a hole in one, turned to his partner and said,“I can die now”一and then he dropped dead. For about seven days after the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, there was an increase of sudden cardiac(心脏的)death among New Yorkers.20.Why was the man charged?A.Because he was trying to kill an old woman.B.Because he caused an old woman’s terror and she died.C.Because he beat an old woman and caused her heart attack.D.Because he murdered an old woman while robbing a bank.21.The underlined word “felony”in Para.1 most probably means ___________.A.new B.severe C.deadly D.organized22.Which of the following about the fight-or-flight response is true?A.The fight-or-flight response was not raised or proved yet.B.It is a natural protective method that can only be found in humans.C.The ancient humans had a better fight-or-flight response than modem ones.D.The fight-or-flight response is beneficial to both our actions and organs.23.What activity can we infer is less likely(可能的) to damage the organs?A.Winning a big lottery(彩票).B.Missing a dead family.C.Watching a horror movie. D.Listening to a sweet song.24.The purpose of the passage is _____________.A.to explain why people will die of a heart attackB.to offer some advice on protecting us from heart failureC.to compare different kinds of feelings to cause a deathD.to show strong emotions can cause a sudden deathCEach year, 500 million people from 164 countries celebrate World Environment Day on 5 June. It may seem like there is not much that an individual can do to save the world, but there is. One of the first steps is to understand the problems and their solutions.Try to learn about your ecosystem, endangered animals and pollution. If you are well-informed, you can make better decisions about how to save energy and produce less waste. You can also learn how to be a better consumer and not buy products made from endangered animals or which have too much packaging. Also share your concerns with others and find ways to promote environmental education. Help educate people in your community about ways in which they can help protect the environment. The Earth is our only home. We should take good care of it.RecycleMake a list of all the things you can recycle at home and at school and start recycling. In some cases, you can sell the things you recycle. In others, you can turn unwanted items into something useful for another purpose, such as using old plastic bottles for growing plants. Most bottles and jars contain at least 25% recycled glass. And recycling aluminum(铝) cans saves 95% of the energy needed to make aluminum from bauxite ore. Recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees, 26,000 liters of water, 1,700 liters of oil, 266 kilograms of air pollution and 2.3 cubic meters of rubbish dump space.Use less energyThe easiest way to save energy is to cycle or walk whenever possible instead of using public transportation. At home and at school, you should only use electric lights and electrical appliances when you need them. There are many other less obvious ways of saving energy. For example, try to ask your mum to buy food which has been grown locally. Why? When people buy food from far away, it takes extra energy to package and ship it by boat, train, truck or plane.Save waterYou can save water by helping your Dad repair leaking pipes and toilets. Take short showers instead of baths. Some waste water from baths can be used for other purposes, such as watering plants or washing outdoor spaces. It is important to help preserve the local water quality by not pouring dangerous household chemicals down the drain or into the ground. Dispose of them properly.25. The target readers of this passage could mostly probably be ________.A. housewivesB. car driversC. businessmenD. students26. Which of the following is NOT mentioned to protect the Earth?A. Don't buy products made from endangered animals.B. Don't buy food produced in faraway places.C. Don't order more than you can eat at a restaurant.D. Don't buy goods with heavy packaging.27. According to the passage, the underlined words “bauxite ore” in the third paragraph refers to________.A. a metal which can be used to make cansB. a mineral from which a certain metal can be obtainedC. a container in which a certain material can be storedD. a matter which can be used to produce energy28. AThis year marks the 125th anniversary of his death. Vincent Van Gogh isn't the most famous artist in the world, but his story is certainly the best- known. It is such a sad story. Here was a man who failed, or who didn't care to succeed, but succeeded at one thing that was not very practical at all.V an Gogh was born to quite a rich family in the Netherlands. His first work was for an art dealer. That work wasn't enjoyable for him, so next he tried teaching in England. Always a religiousman, Vincent wanted to be priest, but failed the exams. He eventually found religious work as a missionary(传教士).Van Gogh found something else to believe in when he lived in a small mining town inBelgium-art. There, he returned to his childhood love of painting and drawing. One thing that people, even people who don't find art memorable, remember about Van Gogh's paintings is the way he used colors. In Wheatfield with Crows (1890) the colors are natural. Corn is yellow, grass is green, and crows(乌鸦) are black. But they are used in such a way that when welook at the painting, the last thing we see is a photograph. However, the painting that made him famous after his death did little for him when he was alive. His life had a sad, early ending. He had mental(心理的)problems, which led him to cut off his ear and eventually die by shooting himself. Arguably, it wasn't the art that gave him mental problems. That's cliche(陈词滥调). What made him so sad may have been the difficulty of working as an artist in a practical world.21. Which of the following is TRUE about Van Gogh?A. He was born to a rich family in the Netherlands 125 years ago.B. He was a teacher, a priest and a miner before he became an artist.C. His paintings didn't bring him much wealth or fame when he was alive.D. He decided to be an artist when he discovered his love of painting at a young age.22. What is special about Van Gogh's paintings?A. The way he used colors.B. They are as real as photographs.C. Most of them have a nature theme.D. They look completely different from impression works.23. According to the author, what might have caused Van Gogh's mental problems?A. The art of painting.B. The loss of one ear.C. Pressure from his family.D. Not being accepted or recognized.BOnce, two phoenix birds flew over a small village in Hunan province. The village was so beautiful that the birds never wanted to leave. This legend was recited to me during my visit to Fenghuang, adding a mythical(神秘的) touch to this ancient town.Fenghuang is a snapshot of idyllic (田园诗般) village life in rural China. Set alongside the banks of the Tuojiang River. Fenghuang is full of small, winding(蜿蜒的) alleys and surrounded by lush, green hills. Having traveled directly from the bustling(喧嚣的) city of Changsha, Fenghuang was a breath of fresh air. When I visited Fenghuang, it was July. My friend and I excitedly explored, walking along the ancient city wall and crossing the beautiful, old bridges. Despite the crowds of tourists it seemed asif life in this corner of China had not changed for centuries. People were very relaxed. They were never bothered by the hot weather nor by the tourists, walking, eating and playing outdoors. On our first evening we bought spicy, cold noodles from a street vendor and ate on the riverbank as we watched the sunset. We stayed in a small hotel similar to many of the traditional buildings in the village. Our room was built on high stilts(桩子) over the banks of the river. From our window we could hear the rushof the water and the sounds of excited tourists traveling in small boats downstream. Even in modern times, the river continues to be the life of the village. We saw people busy at work catching fish, orferrying(摆渡) tourists for sightseeing. Young children played in shallow waters and families washed their clothes and utensils(厨具).After two days exploring the village, I could empathize with the legend of the phoenix. I was reluctant(不情愿) to leave.24. The author mentions the legend of the phoenix birds in the first paragraph_ .A. to show her deep love in Chinese cultureB. to introduce the topic of her trip to the town of FenghuangC. to explain how the town of Fenghuang got its nameD. to describe the beautiful scenery of the town of Fenghuang25. Which of the following aspects of the town of Fenghuang are mentioned in the article?a. populationb. geographyc. architectured. weather and climatee. food culturef. living habitsg. festival activitiesA. acdegB. bcdefC. cdefgD. abcde26. We can infer from the article that the author found her trip to the town of Fenghuang_A. boringB. relaxingC. quite an adventureD. a waste of time and money27. The underlined word "empathize " in the last paragraph probably means_A. understand and share the feelings of someone elseB. strongly disagree with somethingC. pay close attention to somethingD. understand the importance of somethingCAlmost all of us have been there: A sense of unease(不安) strikes us when we see the battery running low on the smartphone. It can sometimes turn out to be a nightmare (噩梦) as the gadget suddenly gives up in the middle of a conversation or when we are halfway through the route we are navigating(导航)。
