past perfect simple and continuous
♦ are used to refer to events in the past which happened before other events in the past ,usually when there is no time expression to make this clear. Past perfect simple to finished events and past perfect
continuous to unfinished ,**pleted or continuing events.
By the time we got to the cinema, the film had started .
He’d been working hard all morning, and he felt really tired.
In both examples, the past perfect happens before the past simple.
Study this example situation:
yesterday morning Yesterday morning I got up and looked out of the window.
The sun was shining, but the ground was verywet.
It had been raining .
It was not raining when I looked out of the window;
the sun was shining .But it had been raining before.
Had been-ing is the past perfect continuous:
You can say that something had been happening for a period of time before something else happened: ♦ We’d been playing tennis for about half an hour when it started to rain heavily.
♦ George went to the doctor last Friday. He hadn’t been fe eling well for some time.
Exercise 1 Read the situations and make sentences from the words in brackets.
