短文改错首先需要考生找出短文中存在的10 处错误，然后，按照题目要求及错误的形式标上相应的符号，纠正错误。
错误分别为缺词，多词和错词，文中错误类型包括词法、句法、行文逻辑等，要求考生对每个句子进行判断，如有错误即将其改正（教育部考试中心，2013）。
短文改错是一种较高层次测试，主要考查考生对英语知识的掌握和语言综合运用能力。

二、命题特点近几年高考英语短文改错都是一篇100～120字的学生习作式的短文，话题是发生在学生身边的事，语言简明易懂，基本上不涉及晦涩的语言现象和繁难的语句结构。
新课程高考短文改错同旧的短文改错相比具有以下特点：（一）以短文形式自然呈现，以“句子”为单位设置错误，情景自然，任务真实，但难度较大；（二）新短文改错要求考生在文中直接用符号标示，在标示下直接写出答案，考生不易出错，阅卷更加直观；（三）新短文改错设置有增加、删除和修改三种错误类型，10 处错误中，每个句子中最多有两处错误，改变了旧短错中错词、多词、缺词和正确四种类型的设置。
文改通过2013 年高考英语短文改错的分析，归纳起来，短文改错的命题趋势主要体现在以下几个方面：（一）从表1 可以看出考查知识覆盖面广，分布基本合理。
命题一般在行文逻辑、主谓一致关系、固定搭配、平行结构、多词少词、母语干扰、非谓语动词、词语搭配、词性辨析、连词运用，名词数格、冠词用法、代词用法、介词用法等方面进行设计和考查，错误涉及词法、句法、语篇结构、行文逻辑等。
在改错中，占比例较大的是动词形式的变化、其次是名词的单复数、主谓一致、形容词和副词的误用、连词的用法及语篇中行文逻辑错误。
（二）从表2 看出，四种设错类型中，除大纲卷外“错词”类占80%，多词和缺词分别占10%。
（三）短文改错试题的难度保持平稳，体裁以记叙文为主，句子结构以简单句为主，含有复合句和并列句。
句子的长短是控制难度的一个重要因素，句子越长难度越大。
2013 年短文改错句子平均长度趋于平稳，但每篇都有一个20 词左右的长句子，这就需要考生在这个句子中判断出二到三个错误。
（四）短文改错增加了语境和逻辑错误，这就需要考生不仅要从语法角度分析短文中出现的错误，而且要理解上下文甚至全篇的内容，才能做出正确的判断。
四、考查要点短文改错的目的是测试考生发现、判断、纠正一些词法、句法以及语篇中行文逻辑等方面错误的能力。
它既能考查考生的词汇和语法方面的能力，也能考查考生的阅读理解能力。
其考查要点主要有（以2013 年高考试题为例）：（一）词法的测试1.名词。
名词单复数的误用，普通格和所有格的区别，名词前需不需要加冠词等。
例如：全国课标卷II：There was a crying need for good cup with handles to suit British habits. cup为可数名词, 且此处是泛指的概念，应该用cup的复数形式cups。
2.冠词。
定冠词the 和不定冠词a/an 的区别；不定冠词a 和an 的区别；用定冠词和不定冠词的区别及冠词的惯用法等。
例如：全国大纲卷79 题：So when I have theproblem I will turn to her for help. the 是特指，此处指当“我”有问题时，是泛指，故用不定冠词a 。
全国课标卷II：This custom soon becomes another meal of ∧day. day 前应加定冠词the ,是特指一天中的其它一餐。
陕西卷：There were a sudden pull at the pole and ∧ fish was caught . and 后要加a ，第一次提到的某物，其前应应用不定冠词a，即a fish 。
3.形容词和副词。
形容词和副词的混用；比较级和最高级的运用；是否误用或多用了相似词等。
例如：浙江卷：（1）Here I am in the middle of acity, 350 miles far away from our farmhouse. 350 miles 和far 重复，误用了多余的副词far。
（2）To make matters bad, now I have to share a room with my younger sister, Maggie. To make matters worse 是固定搭配，意为“事情更糟的是”，bad 要用比较级worse。
（3）I am awfully tiring, but I know I will never fall sleep. 以ing 结尾的形容词通常修饰物以ed 结尾的形容词通常修饰人，tiring 应改成tired；fall asleep 是固定搭配，意为“入睡，睡着”，故动词sleep 应改成形容词asleep。
辽宁卷：I understood that he missed us just as many as we missed him. 根据句意，表示思念“与…一样多”应该用as much as。
四川卷：I found the test difficulty, but I tried hardly to do it. Found 后应用形容词difficult 作宾语补足语；hardly 是否定副词，意为“几乎不”，不符合语境，表示“努力做”，应该用副词hard。
全国课标卷II：Interesting, it had a connection by the British porcelain industry. 副词放在句首单独使用，修饰全句，故形容词Interesting 应该为副词Interestingly。
4.介词。
介词和动词或形容词的搭配，介词辨析，介词省略，介词漏用，介词惯用法等，例如：全国大纲卷82 题：I’ll think quickly andstand∧to answer. stand up 意为“站起来”，是习惯用法。
全国课标卷I：He was tall, with broad shoulder and a beard that turned from black toward gray over the years.本句指的是爷爷的胡子由黑变白，from 应与to/into 连用。
辽宁卷：Every day, he spends too much time with his work. Spend…on sth.是一个固定搭配。
意为“把…花费在某物上”，with 应该改为on。
全国课标卷II：It had a connection by the British porcelain industry. have a connection to/with 是一个固定搭配。
意为“与…之间的联系”，by 应该改为to/with。
5.代词。
代词重点考查人称代词的格，指示代词，关系代词与从句的关系，即：人称代词用宾格还是用主格；代词前后指代是否一致；定语从句中的关系代词是否误用；不定代词之间的区别。
例如：全国课标卷I：He had a deep voice, which set himself apart from others in our small town.先行词为a deep voice，不是he,故用him 作set 的宾语，himself 应该改为him。
浙江卷：Dad lost his job, and as Mom explained,“He was lucky to find other one.”other是“其他的”，其用法是the other+n.或者（the）others;another 是“又一，另一个”，后跟可数名词或代词，故other 应该改为another。
6.动词。
动词重点考查时态、语态、主谓一致，非谓语动词使用，情态动词运用，动词辨析等。
例如：全国大纲卷77 题：He isn’t good at talk but he gets on well with other. at 是介词，后面应跟动名词，故talk 应该改为talking。
全国课标卷I:I was only four when she passes away. 根据was 可知pass 应该为过去式，句意为：奶奶去世的时候我当时是四岁，故passes 应该改为passed。
全国课标卷II：Have tea in the late afternoon provides a bridge between lunch and dinner. 该句中真正的谓语是provide，故Have tea 在此应该为动名词作主语，Have 应改为Having 形式。
四川卷：Why does she punish me? 全文的主体时态为一般过去式，故does 应改为did 形式。
浙江卷：Do you want to know why we movelast week?根据时间状语last week 可知应该使用一般过去式，故move 应改为moved 形式。
7.连词。
重点考查连词的并用，选择、递进、转折等区别，重点理顺句意的表达。
例如：全国大纲卷85 题: This is how I need to improve in the future. 根据句意此处可用where 或what，都可以作为连词引导表语从句，故how 应改为where/what 形式。
全国课标卷I: Which set himself apart from others in our small town, ∧ he was stron 独立的句子，前后句子是并列关系，所以用and 连接。
四川卷：We were warned not to cheat again so she would need to see our parents.so 是“因此”，表示结果，语境表明用连词or“要不然”。
