Chinese ideas for happiness may be different from Western ones, because Chinese culture emphasizes how happiness is related to one’s social environment and how social harmony offers people happiness. We may not emphasize individuals’ demands or selfawareness of happiness. Chinese happiness may be achieved through those who are around us: our parents, children, other family members, close friends and others in our immediate social circle.
5 Many people may say that nurture or social and family environment is more important than what you are born with. However, a very recent discussion indicates that nurture has to occur positively from a very early stage of life. Otherwise, it can be difficult to change someone by nurturing.
Developing critical thinking
1 This is a difficult question. There are so many aspects of happiness that you could define…I would say happiness is something from your heart. You feel very content with your life and you are jolly, bright and cheerful.
4 1 Janet wants to find out what the busy and lively city of London is like. 2 Today 3 Joe doesn’t agree with Andy. (But they argue in a joking way.) 4 It is not as great a city as London. 5 She thinks London is probably the greatest city in the world.
4 I don’t quite agree with it, because the external environment is also very important. Without a helpful environment, it will be much harder or sometimes impossible to make a change no matter how motivated a person is.
2 One activity may be discussion on how to be happy. There may also be activities asking students to share their happy experiences. I guess most activities are group work or class activity.
I guess some people relate happiness to their material life, eg if they get what they want, they are happy. I always wonder how long this happiness can last, because there is no end to chasing material happiness. I prefer to think of happiness as a kind of spiritual contentment.
3 I agree that this world is full of things for people to do and challenges to face. It is up to people to make an effort to realize their potential.
己所不欲,勿施于人。 Do not make others do things that you don’t want to do yourself.
吃一堑,长一智。 One learns from failure.
1 I would like to agree with this idea, because people should show respect to each other. This will help us live in harmony.
2 People learn from mistakes. Bad experiences do not have to mean there is a bad effect forever, as long as people can learn from them and are able to overcome their difficulties.
Outside view 1 I think schools can be happy places. I remember my schools very well. My primary school gave me the opportunities to meet so many new friends. We are still good friends today even if we are now either studying in different universities or working in different professions.
4 I suppose they could make students aware of their own emotions and understand how important happiness can be for their life.
Perhaps the happiness classes could achieve a counseling effect for the class, to make students happy.
3 I am not sure if happiness directly equates with learning better. I would argue that being happy may help with learning and make the learning easier. I would agree that happy students learn better than unhappy ones, because the happy ones are more relaxed and emotionally less burdened. They can overcome any learning difficulties more easily.
Conversation 2 6 1 don’t mind my asking 2 He drives me crazy 3 What do you mean by 4 It’s the last thing 5 we check out new events 6 the musicians or the actors 7 Can I ask you something else 8 we’ve got an interview to do 9 supposed to be on his way
Discussion
1 I think the teachers may ask the students to discuss some happy experiences and compare them with unhappy ones and then think carefully about what makes them happy and how they can be happy in future.
2 1 Janet is not going back home to China. (Because she wants to work in London during the long summer holiday and find out what it’s like to live in this busy and lively city.)
Inside view Conversation 1 1 1 Janet is a Chinese student in England. 2 She studies at the University of Oxford. 3 She is in London. 4 Probably she is visiting her friends or doing a tour around London. 5 I can see Tower Bridge and the Houses of Parliament. 6 She is talking to her friends.
3 I suppose some will think the class is useful and some won’t believe in it. Different students may have different opinions and reactions.
6 1 So that they can learn something about themselves. 2 It can lead to a higher self-consciousness. 3 It can lead to happiness. 4 A strengthening of the personality. 5 “ Who am I as a person? Am I really happy?” 6 He thinks students can get indications of happiness from teachers. 7 Happiness scientists. 8 They don’t write definitions on the board.
2 Oh, I would have strong doubts about this teaching idea. Happiness comes from within the heart and is helped by the physical and social environment. I wonder how happiness can be taught in class. You may teach students how to deal with matters so that they feel happy about s in the middle of summer. 3 Janet is going to work for London Time Off, a website about London.
4 Joe is Janet’s boss. 5 Janet doesn’t know what she is going to do. (Because it is her first day working there.) 6 Joe and Andy do not agree that New York is the greatest city. (Andy thinks London is.)
