英语三级·1992lnzt

1992年北京地区本科学士学位英语统一考试Part I Reading Comprehension (40%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the answer sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:More than 30,000 drivers and front seat passengers are killed or seriously injured each year. At a speed of only 30 miles per hour it is the same as falling from a third-floor window. Wear a seat belt saves lives; it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than half. Therefore drivers or front passengers over in most vehicles must wear a seat belt. If you do not, you could be fined up to$50. It will not be up to the drivers to make sure you wear your belt. But it will be the driver’s responsibility to make sure that children under 14 do not ride in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt of some kind. However, you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing (倒开) your vehicle; or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special vehicle; or if you have valid (有效的) medical certificate which excuses you from wearing it. Make sure these circumstances apply to you before you decide not to wear your seat belt. Remember you may be taken to court for not doing so, and you may be fined if you cannot prove to the court that you have been excused from wearing it.1. This passage is most probably taken from .A. a medical magazineB. a legal documentC. the Federal LawsD. a police report2. Y ou are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1974), concluded, from other men’s work and his own among peoples in different climates’ that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer.Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in spring man’s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be good time to take a long vacation from thinking.6. According to this passage, your intelligence probably .A. stays the same throughout the yearB. varies from day to dayC. changes with the seasonsD. changes from year to year7. The two best seasons for thinking seem to be .A. spring and fallB. winter and summerC. summer and springD. fall and winterPassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:I came to India a year ago to find a village in which I could live and write but it was many months before I settled down happily in this Himalayan community.I wasted a lot of time looking for the “typical” village. Y et no such thing exists. Conditions vary too widely. But the village I stayed in had much in common-poverty, dirt, ignorance. Often the villagers themselves werepuzzled, suspicious. Why had I come? I had put aside my work as a political journalist because my ideas had changed. I had come to believe that what was happening in the Third World was more important than anything else. But to understand how three-quarters of the world’s people live, and how their future might affect ours, I felt that I first had to try and share their way of life.In the end I chose a mountain village because it was a little cooler than those in the plains. I took the bus from town along a bumpy road. Then came a rough walk down a steep path to the river. After this I began the climb into the hills. Whenever I stopped to catch my breath, there was a magnificent view. After several hours’walk the village came into view.11. The same problem, on the smaller scale, faces practically every company trying to develop new products and create new jobs. There can be little prospect of raising the sort of sums needed from friends and people we know, and while banks may agree to provide short-term finance, they are generally unwilling to provide money on a permanent basis for long-term projects. So companies turn to the public, inviting people to lend them money, or take a share in the business through The Stock Exchange. By doing so they can put into circulation the savings of individuals and institutions, both at home and overseas. When the saver needs his money back, he does not have to go to the company with whom he originally placed it. Instead, he sells his shares through a stockbroker to some other saver who is seeking to invest his money. Many of the services needed both by industry and by each of us are provided by the Government or by local authorities. Without hospitals, roads, electricity, telephones, railways, this country could not function. All these require continuous spending on new equipment and new development if they are to serve us properly, requiring more money than is raised through taxes alone. The Government, local authorities, and nationalized industries therefore frequently need to borrow money to finance major capital spending, and they, too, come to The Stock Exchange. There is hardly, a man or woman in this country whose job or whose standard of living does not depend on the ability of his or her employers to raise money to finance new development. In one way or another this new money must come from the saving of the country. The Stock Exchange exists to provide a channel through which these savings can reach those who need finance.16. Almost all companies involved in new production and development must .A. rely on their own financial resourcesB. persuade the banks to provide long-term financeC. borrow large sums of money from friends and people they knowD. depend on the population as a whole for finance17. The money which enables these companies to go ahead with their projects is .A. repaid to its original owners as soon as possibleB. raised by the selling of shares in the companiesC. exchange for part ownership in The Stock ExchangeD. invested in different companies on The Stock Exchange18. When the savers want their money back they .A. ask other company to obtain their money for themB. look for other people to borrow money fromC. put their shares in the company back on the marketD. transfer their money to a more successful company19. All the essential services on which we depend are .A. run by the Government or our local authoritiesB. financed wholly by rates and taxesC. unable to provide for the needs of populationD. in constant need of financial support20. Today was the day of the Jiangsu college entrance examination, also known as the Gaokao. It was a day that would determine my future, and I couldn't help but feel the weight of the moment. As I walked into the examination room, I saw rows upon rows of desks and chairs, filled with students who werejust as anxious as I was. The atmosphere was tense, but there was also a sense of camaraderie among us. We were all in this together, facing the same challenge. The first section of the exam was the listening comprehension. I put on my headphones and listened intently to the recordings. The questions came at a rapid pace, and I had to think quickly to choose the correct answers. It was a test of not only my English skills but also myability to stay focused under pressure.Next came the reading comprehension section. I read the passages carefully, trying to understand the main ideas and details. Some questions were straightforward, while others required me to make inferences or draw conclusions. It was a test of my critical thinking skills and my ability to analyze information. After a short break, it was time for the writing section. I was given a topic and had to write an essay within a limited time. I brainstormed ideas, organized my thoughts, and started writing. I tried to make my essay engaging and persuasive, using examples and arguments to support my points. It was a test of my writing skills and my ability to express myself effectively. The last section of the exam was the speaking test. I was paired with another student, and we had to engage in a conversation on a given topic. We took turns asking and answering questions, trying to communicate our ideasclearly and fluently. It was a test of my speaking skills and my ability to think on my feet. Finally, the exam was over. I felt a mix of relief and exhaustion. It had been a challenging day, but I had given it my all. Now, all that was left was to wait for the results.Months later, when the results were announced, I felt a surge of joy and relief. I had passed the exam and earned a place in a prestigious university. It was a validation of all the hard work and effort I had put in. I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing that I had overcome the challenges of the Gaokao. The Gaokao was not just a test of academic knowledge, but also a test of character and resilience. It pushed me to my limits and forced me to grow and improve. It was an experience that I would never forget, and it taught me valuable lessons that would stay with me for the rest of my life.In the end, the Gaokao was not just a test, but a journey of self-discovery and growth. It was a rite of passage that marked the transition from high school toadulthood. It was a test that shaped my future and opened doors to new opportunities. And for that, I will always be grateful.。

Each of the passags below is fnllowed by some questions. For each question four answersare given. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer to each of the questions.Put your choice in the ANSWER SIIEET. (30 points)1It is all very well to blame traffic jams, the mst ofpetrol and the quick pace of modem life, but manners on the roads are beaoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men beemonsters behind the wheel. It is aU vvy well, again, tohave a tiger in the tank, but to have onein the driver's seat is arnother matter altogether. You might tolerate the odd road-hog, the rudeand inconsiderate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule.Perhaps the situation calls for a 'Be Kind to OtherDrivers' campaign, otherwise it may get -pletely out of hand.Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headedand good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to revenge when subjected to uncivilized be-havior. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards relieving the tensions ofmotoring. A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act of politeness helpsto create an atmosphere of goodwill and tolerance so necessary in modem tralfic conditions. Butsuch acknowledgements of politeness are all too rare today. Many drivers nowadays don't evenseem able to recognize politeness when they see it. However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver whobrakes violently to allow a car to emerge from a sidestreet at solne hazard to following traffic, when a few seconds later the road would be clear anyway; or the man who waves a child across azebra crossing into the path of oning vehicles that may be unable to stop in time. The samegoes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they care to. It always a-mazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.A veteran driver, whose mallners are faultless, told me it would help if motorists leamt tofilter correctly into traffic streams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give riseto bad temper. Unfortunately, modern motorists can' t even learn to drive, let alone master thesubtler aspects of roadsmanship. Years ago the experts warned us that the car-owrner-ship explo-sion would demand a lot more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us totake this message to heart.31 . Aording to this passage, troubles on the road are primarily caused byA. people' s attitude towards the road-hogB. the rhythm of modem lifeC. the behavior of the driverD. traffic conditions32. The sentence "You might tolerate the odd road-hog . . . the rule. " (Para. I ) implies thatA. our society is unjust towards well-mannered motoristsB. rude drivers can be met only oasionallyC. the well-mannered motorist cannot tolerate the road-hogD. nowadays impolite drivers constitute the majority of motorists33. By "good sense" , the writer meansA. the driver' s ability to understand and react reasonablyB. the driver' s prompt response to difficult and severe conditionsC. the driver' s tolerance of nlde or even savage behaviorD. the driver' s acknowledgement of politeness and regulations34.
