➢ Web services are “self-contained, modular applications that can be described, published, located, and invoked over a network— generally, the World Wide Web.”
Web was developed to be a pool of human knowledge, which would allow collaborators in remote sites to share their ideas and all aspects of a common project —Berners Lee, Communication of ACM, 1994

Web Service
The Web, once solely a repository for text and images, is evolving into a provider of services— information-providing services, such as flight information providers, temperature sensors, and cameras, and world-altering services, such as flight-booking programs, sensor controllers, and a variety of e-commerce and business-to-business applications. -Sheila A. McIlraith, IEEE, Intelligent System
➢ A Web service is an interface that describes a collection of operations that are networkaccessible through standardized XML messaging.

Web Service
In the traditional Web model, the main activity is browsing: users follow hypertext links. In the Web Services model, the main activity is remote procedure calling: users invoke prepared tasks that facilitate some useful activity.
