On a Friday night, a poor young violinist was playing his violin at the entrance(入口) of the subway station. The music was so great that people slowed down to listen and put some money into his hat. The next day, the violinist came to the entrance again. He put down his hat as usual. Beside the hat was a piece of paper with some words on it. It said, “A George Black has put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Welcome to claim(认领) it.” Soon the people were all interested in the words and wondered what it could be. After a while a man rushed through the crowd, took the violinist’s shoulders and said, “I knew you would certainly come here.” The violinist asked, “Did you lose something?”“ Lottery(彩票).” The violinist took out a lottery ticket with Black’s name on it. Black took it and danced happily.
Black was an office worker. He bought the lottery and won a prize of $500,000. But when he gave $50 to the violinist for his wonderful music, the lottery ticket was thrown in, too. The violinist was a college student. This morning, he was going to fly to Vienna for high education. However, when he found the ticket, he canceled(取消) the flight and returned to the entrance.
Later someone asked the violinist why he didn’t take the lottery ticket to pay the tuition fee(学费). He said, “Although I don’t have much money, I live happily. If I lose honesty, I won’t be happy forever.”

Car Free Day encourages driven to give up their car for a day to protect the environment. People from around the world get together in the streets to remind the world that we don't have to accept the society full of cars. It was first started by 34 cities in France and September 22 is Car Free Day. The first Car Free Day in China was in Chengdu in 2001. The slogan for the day is “If we drive for one less day, we can have one more nice day.”
Organized activities are held in many cities on Car Free Day. In Brussels, Car Free Day shall be valid (有效的) for everybody except persons with a special permit(许可征), but they have to slow down to the speed of 30 kilometers per hour. The public transportation is free on that day. In London, they have special “green ar eas”. Walking, biking and public transpor tation are encouraged. The streets are open only to walkers, bicycles and buses from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. In Beijing, it asks drivers to leave their cars at home for one day each month and walk or ride a bike to work. More and more people are joining in the activity. In the first quarter of this year, Beijing only had 52 blue sky days, and you may see haze(雾霾) almost every day! We must do more for Car Free Day as a Beijing driver said. “W e may not change the weather, but we ca n choose not to drive.”
But we do not want just one day and then a return to “normal” life. W e should go on with Car Free Day.

Minoru Yamasaki was a well-known American architect (建筑师). He was born in 1912 in Seattle, Washington. His parents came from Japan. Minoru went to college to study architecture. Every summer he worked in a fish factory to help pay for college. Often he worked from four o'clock in the morning until midnight. He slept in a room with 100 other men. Later in life, Yamasaki remembered these times and was always good to his workers.
Yamasaki sometimes dreamed about his work. Once he woke up at three o’clock in the morning. He remembered a building that was in his dream. He got up and started to draw. Yamasaki used a new design for the buildings. These buildings are now the Century Plaza Hotel, and Tower in Los Angeles, California.
Yamasaki was different from other architects. His buildings give people a feeling of peace and happiness. Many of his designs have pools of water, flowers, and windows on the roof to let in light. He always designed buildings to please people. He wanted to give them a place away from the busy ways of modern life.
Yamasaki worked for several companies. But his success began when he started his own company. In 1956, he won the Architect’s First Honor Award for his design of an airport in St. Louis, Missouri. He won two more awards over the next five years. In 1962, he designed the World Trade Center in New York. It is very famous.
In 1993, a bomb exploded (炸弹爆炸) in the World Trade Center. But the buildings did not fall down because they had a good design.
Yamasaki had strong opinions about his buildings. They had to be built his way. He refused to change the design of his buildings, even if he lost a job.
Minoru Yamasaki died in 1986. He designed more than 300 buildings. People will enjoy the design and beauty of his buildings for a very long time.
