The Secrets of Good Health1 Exercise. Eat right. Don't smoke. These are some of the most common words of advice to people who wish to stay healthy. But a growing amount of scientific research shows that there is another, equally important, aspect to staying well, peace of mind.2 Think about how your heart races while you are waiting to be called into the doctor's office or how unhappy a bad headache can make you. There is a two-way connection between mind and body. When one is bothered, the other feels it. At the heart of the communications network are brain chemicals called neurotransmitters which communicate messages not only within the brain, but also within the body. One key receptor, the immune system, is a network of cells and organs that work to fight off viruses and bacteria. When you experience joy, fear, or relaxation, the immune system may increase or decrease production of disease-fighting cells, thus helping you to fight off the flu, or even cancer.3 By now, how the immune system is affected by stress has been well documented. In one study involving newlywed couples, for example, those who showed hostile behavior during a 30-minute discussion about marriage problems had lower immune functioning for the 24-hour period following the experiment than people who showed less negative behavior. It is not just stress that can do damage. One researcher thought that if thesame cold virus was put under two different noses, the person who is depressed or anxious or pessimistic would be more likely to develop the cold.4 What is it about stress and related emotions that can encourage poor health? These feelings can cause the production of substances that damage or weaken our immune cells. Negative emotions can also cause our bodies to produce fewer immuno-transmitters which ultimately help fight off disease.5 If stress, depression, anger and other negative feelings can make you more likely to get sick, can the reverse be true? Will you have a stronger immune response and greater health if you are happier, less stressed, and more optimistic? Experts believe that the answer is yes. There are studies showing that by employing certain mind-body techniques that help reduce stress and improve outlook, cancer patients can live longer. But cancer patients aren't the only ones who can benefit. Certain mind-body techniques can help all of us. Research has found that when patients with chronic pain used relaxation therapies and other behavioral techniques to manage discomfort, they reduced their visits to the doctor by 36 percent. Relaxation produces better health through deep, rhythmic breathing, muscle loosening, and a slower heart rate. When some of the tension is taken out of the body, the strain is taken off the entire system. Relaxationdecreases blood pressure, heart rate and respiration and increases one's sense of well-being. That is important because a body that is constantly tense will eventually give out.7 There are dozens of mind-body techniques for you to choose from. The key is to find one you're comfortable with and then do it regularly. Simply writing about negative, unpleasant events may actually boost your immunity according to researchers. Scientists are not completely sure why it works, but they know that when individuals write, it helps them organize events, which in turn gives them more understanding of the situation. When you can give a stressful experience meaning through writing, you don't think about it or worry about it as much. And when you reduce stress, you boost immune functioning. How much you write or how long you write depends upon how much stress you feel about the event. One doctor suggests that people write until they are tired of writing and then read over what they have written. This helps make more sense of it. Also, just talking about a stressful experience with a friend can have the same positive effect.8 Study after study has shown that people with good support systems caring, helpful family, friends and co-workers have better health. Researchers think that the understanding we get from them reduces stress, which in turn helps the immune system. As one psychologist states,"When you have someone who loves you and cares about you to share your problems and feelings with, you don't feel you have to fight your problems, or the world, alone." Another interesting study has shown that the more diverse your social network, the better, that people who have a number of different social relationships have a lower risk of getting colds than those with fewer.9 There are other fast but effective mind-body relaxation techniques. One could be called "belly breathing." Sit in a comfortable chair in a quiet room. Close your eyes. Breathe through your nose, fill your lungs with air, then slowly release the breath through your mouth. Another technique could be called "mindfulness." Take a slow walk and be aware of exactly what is happening to you at each moment whether the wind is on your face, an insect is flying near you, or you hear birds singing. Even if you continue thinking about problems, you will become calmer and distance yourself from your problems. If you are at home, you might dance. Put on some fast music, close the door, and let yourself go. The dancing will energize you and that alone will make you feel better.10 Whichever mind-body techniques work best for you, never rely on them and them alone to keep you mentally and physically well. Like exercise, good nutrition and proper medical care, methods such asrelaxation therapies are only one part of the recipe for good health. Still, they are an important ingredient.。

It also looks at the future of mankind. The World Exposition is organized by the government of the country in which it is held, and its scale and impact have exceeded all other international trade exhibitions. It has been called "the Olympic Games of economic, cultural and scientific fields."The first session of the World Exposition was held in London in 1851, and some 40 expositions since then have been held in turn by different developed countries. In 2002,Shanghai won the bidding as the hosting city of 2010 Expo and thus China will be the first developing country to hold this grand exhibition.According to the Bureau of International Expositions' (BIE) new regulations, World Expositions are divided into two types: those, which are registered and cover a broad or general theme, and those, which are recognized and concentrate on a specific theme. The former is held every five years and lasts six months. And the latter usually lasts three months and is held once between two registered ones. The 2010 World Exposition for which Shanghai won the bidding belongs to the former. The '99 Kunming World Horticulture Exposition hosted in China is the latter.Important Words1. shock n.--a heavy blow, a great hit 打击,震动,震惊ExamplesHe still hasn’t recovered from the shock of the car accident. It was a great shock for him when his wife died .2. live a.--of current interest, broadcast while being performed 活的,现场的,直播的ExamplesThe foreign visitors were very much interested in the live performance of the drum dance. It is a custom for most Chinese families to watch a live television program on the Eve of the Spring Festival.3. partner n.--a member of a business, a spouse 生意伙伴,配偶ExamplesHusband and wife are called partners for life. The American company is looking for a business partner in China.4. observe v.-- follow closely, abide by 遵守,信守,遵循ExamplesBoth parties are expected to observe the terms of this contract. All drivers are required to observe the speed limit.5. potential a.-- capable of being but not yet in existence, latent 潜在的,潜力的ExamplesIt is often hard for a company to find its potential problems.Every soldier is a potenti al army officer.6. literature n.-- printed material published by a company which is intended to encourage people to buy that company’s products or services 广告宣传资料ExamplesAll the available literature on the subject has been collected.A descriptive l iterature is added to every product produced by this company.7. fruit n.-- result, outcome 成果,结果,果实ExamplesThe farmers gathered together to enjoy the fruits of their labor.I do hope that your hard work will bear fruit.8. ensure v.-- make sure or certain, insure 确保,保证,担保Measures have been taken to ensure that the work can be done in the right way. This letter of introduction will ensure you an interview.9. conduct v.1) lead or guide (sb/sth) 领导,指导、引导或带领…I asked the attendant to him to the door/ him out.A guide the visitors round the museum.2)a. direct (sth); control; manageconduct business/ a meeting/ negotiations, etcShe was appointed to conduct the advertising campaign.b. direct the performance do (an orchestra, a choir, a piece of music, etc)A concert concerted by sir Colin Davis3) conduct oneself well, badlyconduct oneself honorably, with dignity, like a gentlemanHow did the prisoner conduct himself?4) (of a substance ) allow (heat, electric current, etc) to pass along or through itCopper conducts electricity better than other materials do.10. engage (sb) in sth (cause sb to) take part in or be occupied in sth(使某人)参加某事或从事某事I have no time to engage in gossip.be engaged in politics, businessI engaged him in conversation.11. ensure (US insure) v.1) make sure; guarantee 确保,保证,担保The book ensured his success. Please ensure that that all the lights are switched off at night.2) make (sb) certain to get (sth); assure 使(某人)一定得到(某事物);保证得到These pills should ensure you a good night’s sleep.12. frustrate v.1) prevent (sb) from doing or achieving sthHe had hoped to set a new world record, but was frustrated by bad weather.2) male (efforts, etc) useless; defeatBad weather has frustrated plans to launch the spacecraft today.3) upset or discourage (sb)Mary was frustrated by the lack of appreciation shown of her work.adj. frustratedfrustratingn. frustrationDifficult Sentences1.I was surprised to find the exhibition hall being packed with both products and visitors.Analysis:The exhibition hall being packed with…is a complex object made up of the object the exhibition hall and its complement being packed with…

Free TalkFirst, greet students and do a short self-introduction and tell my phone number and the location of my office to students to contact me conveniently.Second, ask the students to introduce themselves in English one by one, which aims to prompt students to speak as much English as possible. And the following questions can be covered when the teacher prompts students to speak more in English.1. What’s your name? Where are you from?2. What’s your major?I major in/My major is accounting.3. Why did you choose this college?4. What’s your deepest impression upon our college and our teachers in the college?5. What’s your hobby? What do you usually do after class?6. What’s your favorite color, book, course and etc and ask them why.7. How do you pay for your tuition fees? By your parents or yourself?8. Do you think English is very difficult to learn well? If so, what do you think is the most difficult when learning English?Third, ask the students some questions about their summer holiday to get acquainted with the students.1. What have you done during the summer holiday?2. Have you ever read any book or seen any intriguing film? And can you tell us the main idea of the book or the film?3. Have you had a part-time job in your holiday? And do you want to share your working experience with us, if you did very well? This helps them to develop their communication skills and helps them get comfortable with speaking and interacting with all the students in the class.Forth, introduce the aims and teaching procedures of the course for the students. And illustrate the makeup of the final grade and emphasize the discipline in the class and speech for each class. Finally, tell students how to learn English well:Speak without FearThe biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear. They worry that they won’t say things correctly or that they will look stupid so they don’t talk at all. Don’t do this. The fastest way to learn anything is to do it – again and again until you get it right. Like anything, learning English re quires practice. Don’t let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.Use all of your ResourcesEven if you study English at a language school it doesn’t mean you can’t learn outside of class. Using as many different sources, methods and tools as possible, will allow you to learn faster. There are many different ways you can improve your English, so don’t limit yourself to only one or two. The internet is a fantastic resource for virtually anything, but for the language learner it's perfect.Surround Yourself with EnglishThe absolute best way to learn English is to surround yourself with it. Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English language radio broadcasts, watch English news, movies and television. Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The more English material that you have around you, the faster you will learn and the more likely it is that you will begin “thinking in English.”Listen to Native Speakers as Much as PossibleThere are some good English teachers that have had to learn English as a second language before they could teach it. However, there are several reasons why many of the best schools prefer to hire native English speakers. One of the reasons is that native speakers have a natural flow to their speech that students of English should try to imitate. Thecloser ESL / EFL students can get to this rhythm or flow, the more convincing and comfortable they will become. Watch English Films and TelevisionThis is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very effective. By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) you can expand your vocabulary and hear the flow of speech from the actors. If you listen to the news you can also hear different accents.Listen to English MusicMusic can be a very effective method of learning English. In fact, it is often used as a way of improving comprehension. The best way to learn English is to get the lyrics (words) to the songs you are listening to and try to read them as the artist sings. There are several good internet sites where one can find the words for most songs. This way you can practice your listening and reading at the same time. And if you like to sing, fine.Study As Often As Possible!Only by studying things like grammar and vocabulary and doing exercises, can you really improve your knowledge of any language.Do Exercises and Take TestsMany people think that exercises and tests aren't much fun. However, by completing exercises and taking tests you can really improve your English. One of the best reasons for doing lots of exercises and tests is that they give you a benchmark to compare your future results with. Often, it is by comparing your score on a test you took yesterday with one you took a month or six months ago that you realize just how much you have learned. If you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing. Start now by doing some of the many exercises and tests on this site, and return in a few days to see what you've learned. Keep doing this and you really will make some progress with English.Record YourselfNobody likes to hear their own voice on tape but like tests, it is good to compare your tapes from time to time. You may be so impressed with the progress you are making that you may not mind the sound of your voice as much.教案头Unit 1 Hello, Hi!SectionⅠTalking Face to FaceI.Imitating Mini-talks1. pair worka.
