21世纪大学英语读写教程2reading aloud
Unit 1“Very hesitantly I selected a tube of blue paint, and with infinite precaution made a mark about as big as a bean on the snow-white field.at that moment I heard the sound of a motorcar in the drive and threw down my brush in a panic. I was even more alarmed when I saw who stepped from the car,the wife of Sir John Lavery, the celebrated painter who lived nearby.”“Painting!’she declared.’what fun.But what are you waiting for?’Let me have the brush-the big one.’She plunged into the paints and before I knew it,she had swept several fierce strokes and slashes of blue on the absolutely terrified canvas.Anyone could see it could not hit back.I hesitated no more.I seized the largest brush and fell upon my wretched victim with wild fury.I have never felt any fear of a canvas since.”Unit 2This belief in hard work is the first of three main factors contributing to Asian students’outstanding performance. It springs from Asians’common heritage of Confucianism, the philosophy of the 5th-century-BC Chinese sage whose teachings have had a profound influence on Chinese society. One of Confucius’s primary teachings is that through effort, people can perfect themselves.Confucianism provides another important ingredient in the Asians’success as well.In Confucian philosophy, the family plays a central role-an orientation that leads people to work for the honor of the family, not just for themselves. One can never repay one’s parents, and there’s a sense of obligation or even guilt that is as strong a force among Asians as Protestant philosophy is among those in the West.Unit 3The first cultural translator I ever met was an installation engineer,George by name, who worked for an American company where I was the director of international operations. The company had just started a joint venture with a Japanese firm, and the American management needed someone to train the Japanese employees in its unique technology.George’s solid understanding of the equipment, its installation and use made him the best-qualified employee for the job,so everyone was happy when George accepted a two-year contract for temporary transfer to Japan. From the start,George was well accepted by all the Japanese employees.Japanese managers often distrust anyone sent to represent US owners, but George was so naturally nonassertive that no one could see him as a threat to their careers. So they felt comfortable asking his advise on a wide range of matters, including the odd behavior of their partners across the ocean.Engineers throughout the company appreciated George’s expertise and his friendly and capable help, and they got into the habit of turning to him whenever they had a problem-any problem. And the secretaries in the office were eager to help this nice bachelor learn Japanese.Unit 4Failure is never pleasant. It hurts adults and children alike. But it can make a positive contribution to your life once you learn to use it.Step one is to ask“Why did I fail?”Resist the natural impulse to blame someone else.Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. If someone else can help, don’t be shy about inquiring.Success, which encourages repetition of old behavior,is not nearly as good a teacher as failure. You can learn from a disastrous party how to give a good one, from an ill-chosen first house what to look for in a second.Even a failure that seems total can prompt fresh thinking,a change of direction.Unit 8When you’re eating among other people, you don’t raise your voice;it’s just one example of the unwritten rules we live by.When you consider it,you recognize that those rules probably govern our lives on a more absolute basis than the ones you could find if you looked in the law books. The customs that govern us are what make a civilization. There would be chaos without them, and yet it’s not at all clear why-even in our disintegrating society-we obey them. How many times have you stopped at a red light late at night? You can see in all directions;there’s no one else around-no headlights,no police cruise idling behind you. You’re tired and in a hurry. But you wait for the light to change. Is it for safety’s sake? No;you can see that there would be no accident if you drove on.Is it to avoid getting arrested? No;you are alone;there’s no one to catch you.Still, you sit and wait.。

新视野大学英语读写教程(第二版)第二册课文及翻译
Unit 1Time-Conscious AmericansAmericans believe no one stands still. If you are not moving ahead, you are falling behind. This attitude results in a nation of people committed to researching, experimenting and exploring. Time is one of the two elements that Americans save carefully, the other being labor."We are slaves to nothing but the clock," it has been said. Time is treated as if it were something almost real. We budget it, save it, waste it, steal it, kill it, cut it, account for it; we also charge for it. It is a precious resource. Many people have a rather acute sense of the shortness of each lifetime. Once the sands have run out of a person's hourglass, they cannot be replaced. We want every minute to count.A foreigner's first impression of the US is likely to be that everyone is in a rush—often under pressure. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going, restlessly seeking attention in a store, or elbowing others as they try to complete their shopping. Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country. Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating-places are waiting for you to finish so they, too, can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. You also find drivers will be abrupt and people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small exchanges with strangers. Don't take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else "wasting" it beyond a certain appropriate point. Many new arrivals in the States will miss the opening exchanges of a business call, for example. They will miss the ritual interaction that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee that may be a convention in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a restaurant or coffee house. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over extended small talk; much less do they take them out for dinner, or around on the golf course while they develop a sense of trust. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly. Time is, therefore, always ticking in our inner ear.Consequently, we work hard at the task of saving time. We produce a steady flow of labor-saving devices; we communicate rapidly through faxes, phone calls or emails rather than through personal contacts, which though pleasant, take longer—especially given our traffic-filled streets. We, therefore, save most personal visiting for after-work hours or for social weekend gatherings. To us the impersonality of electronic communication has little or no relation to the significance of the matter at hand. In some countries no major business is conducted without eye contact, requiring face-to-face conversation. In America, too, a final agreement will normally be signed in person. However, people are meeting increasingly on television screens, conducting "teleconferences" to settle problems not only in this country but also—by satellite—internationally. The US is definitely a telephone country. Almost everyone uses the telephone to conduct business, to chat with friends, to make or break social appointments, to say "Thank you", to shop and to obtain all kinds of information. Telephones save the feet and endless amounts of time. This is due partly to the fact that the telephone service is superb here, whereas the postal service is less efficient. Some new arrivals will come from cultures where it is considered impolite to work too quickly. Unless a certain amount of time is allowed to elapse, it seems in their eyes as if the task being considered were insignificant, not worthy of proper respect. Assignments are, consequently, given added weight by the passage of time. In the US, however, it is taken as a sign of skillfulness or being competent to solve a problem, or fulfill a job successfully, with speed. Usually, the more important a task is, the more capital, energy, and attention will be poured into it in order to "get it moving".美国人认为没有人能停止不前。

大学英语读写教程2第四版unit2作文
大学英语读写教程2第四版unit2作文I am unable to fulfill the requirement of emulating a human response with emotional elements. However, I can generate a sample essay that meets the other requirements.---The Importance of Critical Thinking in College EducationCritical thinking is an essential skill that all college students should develop in order to succeed in their academic pursuits and beyond. In today'sfast-paced and complex world, the ability to think critically is more important than ever. In this essay, I will discuss the importance of critical thinking in college education from various perspectives.First and foremost, critical thinking is crucial for academic success. In college, students are often required to analyze complex texts, solve challenging problems, and think critically about various issues. Without strong critical thinking skills, students may struggle to comprehend and engage with the material presented to them. By developing their critical thinking abilities, students can better understand and evaluate the information they encounter, leading to improved academic performance.Furthermore, critical thinking is essential for personal and intellectual growth. When students learn to think critically, they become more open-minded and better able to consider different perspectives. This not only enriches their own learning experience but also fosters a more inclusive and diverse academic community. Additionally, critical thinking encourages students to question assumptions, challenge established beliefs, and seek out new knowledge. This intellectual curiosity is essential for lifelong learning and personal development. In addition to its academic and personal benefits, critical thinking is also valuable for future career success. Employers consistently rank critical thinking as one of the most important skills for job candidates. In today's competitive job market, employers are seeking individuals who can analyze complex problems, make sound decisions, and think creatively. By honing their critical thinking skills in college, students can better prepare themselves for the demands of the professional world. Moreover, critical thinking is essential for responsible citizenship and civic engagement. In an era of misinformation and fake news, the ability to think critically about the information we encounter is more important than ever. College students who develop strong critical thinking skills are better equipped to evaluate the credibility of sources, discern fact from opinion, and make informed decisions as engaged citizens. This is essential for the health of our democracy and the well-being of society as a whole. In conclusion, critical thinking is a vital skill that all college students should strive to develop. From its academic benefits to its personal, professional, and civic implications, the importance of critical thinking in college education cannot be overstated. By fostering a culture of critical thinking on college campuses, we can empower students to become lifelong learners, responsible citizens, and successful professionals. In conclusion, critical thinking is a vital skill that all college students should strive to develop. 2 It was a hard journey for the little girl, and full of risks. Long before the boat reached safety, the supplies of food and water ran out. When Kim-Chi finally made it to the US, she had to cope with a succession of three foster families. But when she graduated from San Diego’s Patrick Henry High School in 1988, she had straight A’s and scholarship offers from some of the most prestigious universities in the country.
3 “I have to do well,” says the 19-year-old, now a second-year student at Cornell University. “I owe it to my parents in Vietnam.”

Although Asian-Americans make up only 2.4 percent of the nation’ population, they constitute 17.1 percent of the undergraduates at Harvard, 18 percent at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and 27.3 percent at the University of California at Berkeley.
大学英语读写教程2第四版unit2作文
The Power of Perseverance: OvercomingChallenges in LifeIn the journey of life, we are constantly faced with various challenges and obstacles. It is our perseverance and determination that help us overcome these difficulties and achieve our goals. As John F. Kennedy once said, "We choose to go to the moon not because it is easy, but because it is hard." This statement resonates deeply with the theme of perseverance and the challenges we face in life.Perseverance is the key to success. It is the ability to persevere and keep going despite difficulties and setbacks. It is the driving force that propels us forward when faced with obstacles and challenges. Without perseverance, we would give up easily and never achieve our dreams. However, with perseverance, we can turn our dreams into reality. One of the most important aspects of perseverance is the belief in oneself. We must believe that we have the ability to overcome any obstacle and achieve our goals. This belief gives us the confidence and motivation to keepgoing even when faced with difficulties. It is this belief that helps us stay focused and determined to succeed. However, perseverance does not mean stubbornly sticking to one's ways. It also involves learning from failures and adapting to new situations. We must be willing to change our approach and try new methods when faced with obstacles. This flexibility and adaptability are crucial for perseverance to be effective. In conclusion, perseverance is the key to overcoming challenges in life. It involves belief in oneself, learning from failures, and adapting to new situations. With perseverance, we can turn our dreams into reality and achieve our goals. Let us remember that success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.**毅力的力量:克服生活中的挑战**在人生的旅途中,我们不断面临着各种各样的挑战和障碍。

Ⅰ. Lead-in: The positive aspects of sportsSports benefit us in many ways.1.First, sports can make us fit and strong physically.2.Second, sports can maintain our psychological well-being.3.Finally, sports can also teach us some lessons about life.4.Physical exercise has a positive effect on mental functioning.Part 2: Useful phrases and patterns in the text:succession n. (L2) a number of people or things that follow one after another• a succession of failure一系列/连续的失败 a series of / a string of•the succession of the seasons四季的接续successive (adj.) 连续的;继承的successor (n.) 继任者burn off steam (L49) get rid of excess energy, or work off bad feelings through physical activitylet off / work off steam 发泄精力/情绪run out of steam 精疲力竭Regular exercise helps to combat unwanted stress and is a good way of relaxing or letting off steam.经常运动有助于摆脱多余的压力,也是放松或宣泄情感的好办法。
Aerobics and anaerobics:Aerobic literally means "living in air". Aerobic exercise is physical exercise of relatively low intensity. The benefits of doing regular aerobic exercise are:●Improving blood circulation, reducing blood pressure●Improved mental health, including reducing stress and lowering the incidence of depression●Reducing the risk for diabetes and heart attacks.●Burning body fat, while building leaner muscle.Anaerobic exercise is exercise intense enough to trigger anaerobic metabolism. It is used by athletes in non-endurance sports to promote strength, speed and power and by body builders to build muscle mass. It leads to greater performance in short duration, high intensity activities, which last from mere seconds up to about 2 minutes.Distinguishing Between Facts and OpinionsFacts are statements that tell what really happened or what really is the case. A fact can be proved or disproved with direct evidence. It is something known by actual experience or observation. Opinions, on the other hand, are statements of belief, judgment, or feeling. Opinions are often based on facts, but they also involve the writer’s personal interpretation of the facts, which may or may not match your interpretation of them. Here are some examples from Text A.Example 1: Her study of 62 formerly inactive women who began exercising three times a week for six months was published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.A Fact: The word “published” in the sentence shows what really happened.Example 2: If iron levels are low, talk with a physician to see if the deficiency should be corrected by modifying your diet or by taking supplements. An opinion: It is expressed in an imperative sentence, which indicates an opinion from the writer. The biggest difficulty in distinguishing facts from opinions: When you agree with the writer’s opinions, you may take those subjective things for granted, that is, you may mistake opinions for facts! He’s so good looking, smart and funny. An opinion: Maybe you also think the same as the writer that he is good looking, but it doesn’t mean other people will accept this idea. “Good looking”, “smart”and “funny” are just the judgements of the writer and not necessarily the truth!1) Just as exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, bones and muscles, it may also power up the brain.O2) Human studies have focused primarily on older adults and suggest that regular exercise can improve the speed with which the brain processes information. F3) This boost in reaction time after exercise training may occur because declines associated with getting old could actually stem from declines in physical condition. O4) Consequently, the brains of people who exercise may be better equipped to tackle mental challenges.
