"Since you all enjoy eating peanuts, let us open it up and make it a peanut garden.” At that my brother, sister and I were all delighted and so were the young housemaids. "Let us have a party tonight to celebrate," Mother suggested, "and ask Dad to come for a taste of our fresh peanuts. What do you say?" We all agreed, of course. Mother cooked the peanuts in different styles and told us to go to the thatched pavilion in the garden for the celebration. 爹爹说:“你们爱吃花生么?”The weather was not very good that night but, to our great delight, Dad came all the same. The PeanutThere was a half-acre vacant land in our backyard. “What a pity to leave it go to waste”,my mother said. “Since you all like peanut so much, let`s cultivate it for peanut.”We sisters and brothers were willing to buy the seeds ,dig the land, spray water .To our surprise, we got a harvest just after several months.Mother said:“Tonight, we were going to have a harvest festival and we were to invite your father to join us tasting our fresh peanut.” Mother cooked several dishes which were made by peanut and offered we would spent our festival in thatched pavilion. The weather was not good ,however, rarely father still came .“Do you like eating peanut?” the father asked.“Of course, ”we answered emulatively.“Who can tell us the benefits of peanut?”“The taste of peanut is delicious”,said sister.“Peanut can be used to press oil”,said brother. And I said“the price of peanut is cheap, and it is easy to be found in the market, meanwhile we all like to eat. That is the advantages of peanut.”While father said “There are many advantages of peanut, and only one of them is the most important.Unlike apples, peaches and pomegranates that display their fruits up in the air, attracting you with their beautiful colors, peanut buries its fruit in the earth. You just know peanut vine grows low from the ground; you can't even tell whether a vine has peanuts underground until you have digged it out“That’s true,” we all said. Mother also nodded.“So you should try to be like the peanut,” Father continued, “they’re useful though it looks not great and attravtive.”“Then you mean that we should learn to be useful rather than seek to be great and nice-looking,” I said.“Yes.”father said.“That’s what I expect of you.”We kept chatting late that night, eating all the peanuts mother had cooked for us. But f ather’s words remained vivid in my memory till this day.

The Peanut

3 Behind our house there was a patch of land. "It would be a pity to let it go wild.” said Mother. “I suggest that since you are all so fond of peanuts you should grow some there.”We children and the little maidservants were all delighted. Some of us bought seeds, some dug up the plot and others watered it. In just a few months we had a harvest.

因此,enjoy eating比like to eat要好。

“就辟来做花生园罢”译文一将其处理为“why not have them planted here”是很地道的英语表达方式;而译文二“let us open it up and make it a peanut garden”则更忠实于原文。
“tiny”有小之意,而“little”表达出一种怜惜的感情,就像我们平时说“little girl” “little boy”一样,很亲切。 译文二“They do not show themselves until you dig them out when they are ripe and, unless you dig them out, you can’t tell whether it bears seeds or not by its frail stems above ground.” 相比之下,译文一“When you come upon a peanut plant lying curled up on the ground, you can never immediately tell whether or not it bears any nuts until you touch them.” 但笔者认为这句的后半部分可以简化为“you can never tell whether it bears nuts or not until you touch them”这样会更加简洁顺畅。

例如原文中的“动土”一词,可以说是一个广 义词,译文1以plough the land与此对应,译文2、译 文3分别以dig the ground 和dig up the plot与此对 应。根据Longman词典, plough 作为动词的第一个 义项是to break up or turn over (land) with a plough以犁耕地。如: [1] Farmers plough (their fields) in autumn or spring农夫于秋天或春天耕地。

英语中对父母的称呼也主要为4套词语,它们 是:father/mother; papa/mama; dad/mum; daddy/mummy 。(在美国英语中, mom/momma/mommy。)除father/mother 和papa/mama外,其它两套对父母的称呼语都 带有infml非正式语体或口语体,to or by children被小孩使用或对小孩使用。

“The Fallen Blossoms”

母亲“把花生做成好几样食品”,两位译者有不同的理解,译文一为“made quite a few varieties of goodies out of the peanuts”,译文二为“cooked the peanuts in different styles”,笔者更倾向于译文一的译法,张培基先生用make something out of something的搭配,准确地译出了原文“把”的含义。

PeanutsXu DishanBehind our house, there was a half acres of land. One Day my mother suggested that we use that neglected land to plant peanuts which we like most. All of us couldn’t agree more and immediately put this idea into practice. Some of us went to buy seed, some loosen the soil and some irrigate it. Several months later, the first harvest came.Mom asked, “How about inviting your father to our harvest celebration tonight to enjoy our peanuts? ” We agreed. Mother then cook several dishes with peanuts and indicated the booth to be the places where the celebration was hold. The weather that night was not so good but, to our delight, our father came all the same. Dad asked, “Do you like eating peanuts?”“Yes!” We replied quickly.“Who can tell the good of peanuts?” Father added.Sister said,” It smells good.”Brother said,” It can extract oil.”I said, “Everyone can afford to eat it and everyone like it. That’s its good”Then father said, “Peanut has various of benefits and one of them is the most precious. Apple, peaches and pomegranate hung their colorful fruits in their branches to make people desirous as soon as they saw them. But peanuts are not the same. It just bury the fruit into the soil and don’t allowed to be digged out until ripe. Sometimes you find a peanut grown on the ground and could not tell whether it has fruits until you touch it.”“Yes.” We said. And mother also nodded to agree with father. Father added,” So, you all should be like the peanuts because of its helpfulness not its greatness or beautifulness.” I said,”Then our people should be helpful people not great people nor decent people.” Dad said,”That’s my hopes for you.”We left until the night grew late. All the peanuts were eaten up, but father’s words remained in my mind.。
