Aggregation-Induced Emission: Phenomenon, Mechanism and
Applications
Ben Zhong Tang
Department of Chemistry, The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Clear Water Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong, and Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310027 Chromophore aggregation generally quenches light emission. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) refers to an opposite phenomenon that luminogens non-emissive in the solution state are induced to emit efficiently when they are aggregated. In this talk, I will give a brief account on how we have discovered the AIE phenomenon and identified the restriction of intramolecular rotations as a main cause for the AIE effect. On the basis of the mechanism understanding, we have developed a series of new fluorescent and phosphorescent AIE molecules with emission efficiency up to unity and emission color covering the entire visible spectral region. By incorporating the AIE moieties into monomers, we have succeeded in the synthesis of new polymers with AIE features. I will also discuss the unique functionalities and potential applications of the AIE molecules and polymers.
