A
An “apple polisher” is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment. It is not exactly a bribe(贿赂), but is close to it.
All sorts of people are “apple polishers”,including politicians and people in high offices—just about everybody.Oliver Cromwell, the great English leader, offered many gifts to win the support of George Fox and his party, but failed.
There are other phrases meaning the same thing as “apple-polishing”—“soft-soaping”or “buttering-up”.A gift is just one way to “soft-soap”somebody, or to “butter him up”. Another that is just as effective is flattery, giving someone high praise—telling him how good he looks, or how well he speaks, or how talented and wise he is.
Endless are the ways of flattery. Who does not love to hear it? Only an unusual man can resist the thrill of being told how wonderful he is. In truth, flattery is good medicine for most of us,
who get so little of it.
We need it to be more sure of ourselves. It cannot hurt unless we get carried away by it. But if we just lap it up for its good value and nourishment, as a cat laps up milk, then we can still remain true to ourselves.
Sometimes, however, flattery will get you nothing from one who has had too much of it. A good example is the famous 12th century legend of King Canute of Denmark and England. The king got tired of listening to endless sickening flattery of his courtiers(朝臣). They overpraised him to the skies, as a man of limitless power.
He decided to teach them a lesson. He took them to the seashore and sat down. Then he ordered the waves to stop coming in. The tide was too busy to listen to him. The king was satisfied. This might show his followers how weak his power was and how empty their flattery was.
6.Which of the following activities has nothing to do with “apple-polishing”?
A.A boy tells his girlfriend how pretty she looks.
B.An employee tells her boss how good he is at management.
C.A knight is said to be of limitless power by his followers.
D.A teacher praises her students for their talent and wisdom.

解析:根据“An‘apple polisher' is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment.”

7.What does the writer want to prove with Cromwell's example?
A.Everybody can be an “apple-polisher”.
B.Cromwell was not a good “apple-polisher”.
C.George Fox and his party were not “apple-polishers”.
D.There are people who don't like being “apple-polished”.解析:根据第二段“All sorts of people are ‘apple polishers’,including politicians and people in high offices—just about everybody.Oliver Cromwell, the great English leader, offered many gifts to win the support of George Fox and his party, but failed.”

故选A项。

答案:A
8.Which of the following statements about flattery is TRUE according to the author?
A.Too much flattery can carry us away.
B.Flattery is too empty to do people any good.
C.Flattery can get you nothing but excessive(过度的) pride.
D.Flattery is one of the ways to apple-polish people.
解析:根据第一段“An ‘apple polisher' is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment.”和第三段“A gift is just one way to ‘soft-soap' somebody, or to ‘butter him up’. Another that is just as effective is flattery...”

9.Why did King Canute of Denmark and England take his followers to the seashore?
A.Because he was sick of his normal life.
B.Because he disliked being overpraised any more.
C.Because he wanted them to realize how wise he was.
D.Because he wanted them to see how weak he was as a king.
解析:根据第六段“The king got tired of listening to endless sickening flattery of his courtiers(朝臣).”

10.Who does the author think that flattery can do good to?
A.Those who are politicians or in high offices.
B.Those who lack confidence.
C.Those who are really excellent.
D.Those who think highly of themselves.
解析:根据第四段“In truth, flattery is good medicine for most of us, who get so little of it.”以及第五段“We need it to be more sure of ourselves. It cannot hurt unless we get carried away by it.”

B
A blind baby is doubly handicapped. Not only is it unable to see, but because it cannot receive the visual stimulus(刺激)from its environment that a sighted child does, it is likely to be slow in intellectual development. Now the ten-month-old son of Dr and Mrs Dennis Daughters is the subject of an unusual psychological experiment designed to prevent a lag(滞后)in the learning process. With the aid of a sonar-type electronic that he wears on his head, infant(婴儿) Dennis is learning to identify the people and objects in the world around him by means of echoes(回声).
The device is an improvement of the “Sonicguide”,an instrument produced by Telesensory Systems, Inc., of Palo Alto, Calif, and used by blind adults in addition to a sane or guide dog. As adapted for Dennis, it consists of a batterypowered system about the size of a half dollar that is on a headgear. A transmitter sends out an ultrasonic(超声的) pulse that creates an 80 degree cone of sound at 6 feet. Echoes from objects within the cone are perceived (felt) as sounds that vary in pitch(音调) and volume(音量) with the size and distance of the object.
The closer an object is, the lower the pitch, and the larger the object, the louder the signal. Hard surfaces produce a sharp ping,
while soft ones send back signals with a slightly fuzzy quality. An object slightly to the right of Dennis' sends back a louder sound to his right ear than to the left. Thus, by simply moving his head right and left and up and down, he can not only locate an object but also get some notion of its shape and size, thanks to the varying qualities of sounds reaching his ears as the cone of ultrasound(超声波) passes its__edge. Dennis likes to use the device to play a kind of peek-a-boo with his mother. Standing on his knee and facing her directly, he receives a strong signal in both ears. By turning his head away, he makes her seem to disappear. “From the first time he wore it,”says Mrs Daughters, “it was like a light going on in his head.”
What remains to be determined is how well the device will help Dennis cope with his surroundings as he begins to walk and venture further into his environment.
Meanwhile, Telesensory systems, Inc., is working on the development of sonar(声呐) device with somewhat the same sensitivity as Dennis' for use by school-age children.
11.Dr and Mrs Daughters' research is directed to ________.
A.helping the blind to see and learn as well as others
B.benefiting the learning process of blind children
C.solving blind children's psychological problems
D.finding out how children develop intellectually

解析:首段第三句末的不定式“to prevent a lag(滞后) in the learning process”表明了Daughters夫妇研究的目的。

12.Infant Dennis becomes the subject of the experiment most probably because ________.
A.he already lags behind the sighted children
B.he leads a life as normal as any other children
C.he is at the early stage of the learning process
D.he has the aid of a sonar-type electronic device

13.What can we learn about infant Dennis' device?
A.It's the first design that was designed for blind adults.
B.Its battery is as small as a half-dollar coin.
C.It is functionally similar to a sane or guide dog.
D.It has been improved by Telesensory Systems, Inc.

答案:A
14.In the third paragraph, “its edge” refers to “________”.
A.the edge of an object B.the edge of the device
C.the boundary of Dennis' movement D.the boundary of the pitch

答案:A
15.What is Telesensory Systems, Inc. most likely to think about infant Dennis' device?
A.It had better be used by blind children from school age.
B.It needs improving for use in a complicated environment.
C.It may not be so suitable for the blind adults.
D.It benefits blind children in terms of learning.

C
Based on Sue Monk Kidd's bestselling novel,The Secret Life of Bees is a movie of hope and faith for even the unloved and oppressed(受压迫的).Just as in the book, young Lily's thoughts sound and read like poetry, from the first moment when her room fills with bees.

In Tiburon, there is no place where Rosaleen can eat or stay, despite the fact that President Johnson just signed the Ci v il Rights
Act in 1964.(It's still just a piece of paper,Rosaleen says.)So Lily goes in to buy food for them, and sees the jar on sale. When Lily finds out it's made right there in a farmhouse, they go there and ask for help.
,offers them the honey house to live in. From August, Lily learns honey business and a life lesson from the bees. She sees a world where intelligence, independence and culture are honored and rewarded. Dear__Mr__Li,__
Last Sunday,I went to do some reading in your library.Over the time I was there,I found something unpleasant. Therefore,I'd like to voice my opinions, which,I hope, would be of help for you to create a more comfortable place for readers.
First, there are few books on the shelf and most books are not popular today.Second, some books are not sorted in proper order, making it difficult to find what they want quickly. Third, the assistants didn't offer good service.Instead, they were chatting. In addition, they took no notice of the fact that a light wasn't
working.Leave this state of affairs to stay the same, and I am afraid there will be fewer readers.
So,for the sake of readers,I suggest that you change all these as soon__as__possible.
Yours,
Li Hua。
