Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished sentences. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to each question.Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage. When I was a kid, I read every comic book ever published. I quickly went through all of them in a couple of days, and then reread the good ones until the next issues arrived. But as I got older, my eyeballs must have slowed down! I mean comic books started to pile up faster than my brother Russell. It wasn't until much later did I realize it wasn't my eye balls that were to blame. They're still moving as well as ever. The problem is there's too much to read these days and too little time to read every word of it.Now, besides novels and newspapers, I read different kinds of books and magazines. There are hundreds of techniques you could learn to help you read faster. But I know of three that are especially good.Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading, like long and hard magazine or newspaper articles. Read the entire first two paragraphs of whatever you've chosen. Next read only the first sentence of each successive paragraph. Then read the entire last paragraph. It can give you as much as half the comprehension in as little as one-tenth the time.Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading, like short and simple popular magazines or the sports and entertainment sections of the newspaper. Think of your eyes as magnets. Force them to move fast. Sweep each line and pick up only a few key words in each line.Clustering trains you to look at groups of words instead of one at a time to increase your speed and comprehension enormously. It is a totally different way of seeing what we read. Here's how to cluster: Train your eyes to see all the words in clusters of up to three or four words at a glance. With enough practice, you'll be able to handle more reading at school or work – and at home – in less time. You should even have enough time to read your favorite comic books.46.What did the writer realize later regarding his slowed-down eyeballs?A. His brother had more comic books than him.B. He couldn't read as fast as his brother.C. He couldn't finish reading all the comic books.D. He had too much to read but too little time to do it.47.Why is previewing especially useful for a heavy reading?A. You can read various kinds of books such as magazines.B. You can see the whole picture of a long reading in less time.C. You can understand the content completely within a short time.D. You can comprehend at least 50% of what you're reading.48.What is the use of the technique of skimming when you are doinglight reading?A. It enables you to read some entertaining books.B. It enables you to think like magnets.C. It helps you pick up key words.D. It helps you get the information you want.49.What's the most important advantage when you do clustering?A. It helps you read faster and understand better.B. It lets you read in a totally different way.C. It allows your eyes to pick up three to four words at a time.D. It trains your eyes to see all the words in the reading.50.Which statement best expresses the main idea of this passage?A. Moving your eyes fast gives you a general idea.B. It is necessary to choose different methods for different readings.C. Different reading skills should be used at the same time.D. You may read faster by using reading techniques.Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage. Before computers were invented, the words byte and modem did not exist, and a mouse was something that made some people scream and run away. Words are added to language every day. Changes in society also cause changes in language.Changes in attitude also affect language. As people become more sensitive to the rights and needs of individual, it becomes necessary to change the words we use to describe them. The elderly are now called senior citizens. The handicapped are described as physically challenged. Many of the words we once used had negative feelings attached to them. New words show an awareness in today's society that differences are good and that everyone deserves respect. Even the names of certain jobs have changed so that workers can be proud of what they do. The trash man is now called a sanitation worker and a doorman is an attendant. One important influence on our language in the past decade has been the changing role of women in modern society. As women entered more and more areas that were once thought of as men's job, it became necessary to change the job titles. For example, a mailman is now a mail carrier, a watchman is a guard.Sometimes new words may seem awkward and silly, such as chair for chairman, fisher for fisherman, and drafter for draftsman. But change is never easy. People often fight change until it becomes a familiar part of everyday life.Women have fought long and hard to be treated equally in language as well as in society, because they know that changes in language can cause changes in attitudes. If every person isn't referred to as he, people will begin to realize that men aren't the only ones who are important or who have made great achievements. Most words that indicate only one gender have been replaced with words that refer to both males and females. Thus, a poetess is called a poet, a waitress is a server, and mankind has become humankind.51.Words are added to language ________.A. when new things are inventedB. when society changesC. when old words disappearD. all the time52.Words are changed because ________.A. it is part of everyday life.B. the handicapped should be proud of themselves.C. many old words cause negative feelings.D. some words look silly and awkward.53. Language is always added with new vocabulary.B. Language changes with the changing of society.C. Changing language reflects the achievements of people.D. Changing language gives people more individual rights.Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage.People use more than just words to communicate. In fact, some researchers claim that less than half of a spoken message's real meaning is in the words used in the message. They say that most of a message's meaning comes from understanding how the speaker uses things like tone of voice and body language.Body language includes such things as the expression on the speaker's face, gestures that speaker makes with his or her hands, and the position of the speaker's body. Just as there are many different languages spoken around the world, there are many different ways for people to use body language, too. For example, gestures may imply different meanings in different cultures. Making a "thumbs up" sign in America means, "Great!" However, in Arab cultures, this gesture is extremely offensive.Although many gestures can be interpreted differently by different cultures, there are also many gestures that are almost universally interpreted in the same way. For example, by and large, a smile is understood as a sign of friendship or good will around the world. Also, using an open hand to gesture toward something is viewed as polite or friendly in most cultures. There are also some forms of body language that can be universally read with the meaning, "I am interested in you" or "I like you." Sometimes this kind of body language is used unconsciously between two people. These signs of interest include standing or sitting with both feet flat on the ground, mirroring or using the same gestures as the other person, and turningone's body to fully face the other person.Body language experts point out one important thing. The person's culture is only one factor that can influence his or her use of body language. The time and place where the body language is being used can have a lot to do with a person's body language. If the person has had a bad day or if a meeting takes place in a crowded place, the body language a person uses may be very different from under other circumstances.56.According to the passage, more than half of a spoken message's realmeaning comes from ________.A. words used in the messageB. things used in the messageC. the speaker's tone of voiceD. the speaker's tone and body language57.The second paragraph describes ________.A. an example of a gesture not used in IndiaB. different meanings of gestures in different culturesC. how gestures can change the meaning of wordsD. useful gestures in Arab cultures58.If a person starts copying your body language, what does thissuggest?A. Some learners are very interested in finding out or learning grammar rules and doing lots of grammar exercises. Others hate grammar and think it is the most boring part of learning a new language. Whatever opinion you have, however, you cannot escape from grammar; it is in every sentence you read or write, speak or hear. Grammar is simply the word for the rules that people follow when they use a language. We need those rules in the same way as we need the rules in a game. If there are no rules, or if everybody follows their own rules, the game would soon break down. It's the same with language; without rules we would not be able to communicate with other people. So you cannot escape from grammar, but the key question here is: What is the best way to learn grammar? You can learn the rules of a game by simply playing the game. You will certainly make mistakes; you may even get hurt. Eventually, however, you will know how to play. Of course, the rules of a language are very much more complicated than the rules of any game, but in fact this is exactly how you learned your own language. Nobody taught you the rules of your mother tongue as you were growing up but now you never make a grammar mistake. Most people learning a new language do not have so much time and such an ideal situation. So, there is no easy answer to the question. There are just as many different opinions about teaching grammar as there are about learning grammar. Many teachers believe in the importance of grammar lessons devoted to a study of language rules and lots of practice exercises. Other teachers feel that grammar is best learned by doing different language activities without focusing so directly on the rules. Whatever your opinion about grammar and whichever is the way you are taught, you need to use different strategies to help you learn grammar more effectively.61.How is grammar defined in the passage?A. Grammar is something you cannot escape from.B. Grammar is a kind of game that requires a lot of practice.C. Grammar is a set of rules that are used in a language.D. Grammar is a strategy that consists of rules.62.According to the passage, why is learning grammar important?A. It helps you make no mistakes.B. It makes communication possible.C. It helps you not to get hurt.D. It makes playing games possible.63.In the writer's opinion, what is the best way to learn grammar?A. Playing games with a set of rules.B. Learning grammar naturally as you grow up.C. Recalling how you learned your mother tongue.D. Doing a lot of grammar exercises.64.What's the difference between teachers' opinions in the way oflearning grammar?A. More exercises vs. more activities.B. More activities vs. less exercises.C. Less exercises vs. more grammar rules.D. More exercises vs. less activities.65.What is the main idea of the passage?A. Memorizing rules is required for learning grammar.B. Doing a lot of exercises helps learn grammar.C. Playing games helps learn grammar better.D. There are different ways to learn grammar.Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage.Gender differences are also reflected in the ways that men and women use language. In junior high school, Joy's status will depend on her circle of friends. If her friends are popular, then Joy may enjoy high status at schools. For this reason, Joy and many other girls are interested in gossip, talking about other people and their private lives. If Joy has some information to share about a popular girl at school, this proves that she has a friendship with this girl. In this way Joy can use gossip to gain more status in her school.Tommy, on the other hand, may be less interested in gossip. His status doesn't depend on who his friends are at school. Tommy gains status through his own ability to play sports well or earn high grades. Later in life, Joy may continue to be interested in talking about other people and their lives. Tommy will be less interested in personal talk and more concerned with discussions of sports and news. These give him a chance to gain status by showing others his knowledge.Different ways of speaking are part of gender. As adults, men and women sometimes face difficulties in their communication with each other. Studies of communication show that if a woman tells her husband about a problem, she will expect him to listen and offer sympathy. She may be annoyed when he simply tells her how to solve the problem. Similarly, a husband may be annoyed when his wife wants to stop and ask a stranger for directions to a park or restaurant. Unlike his wife, he would rather use a map and find his way by himself.Language is also part of the different ways that men and women think about friendship. Most men believe that friendship means doing things together such as camping or playing tennis. Women, on the other hand, usually identify their best friend as someone with whom they talk frequently. Moreover, they often use tag questions to get agreement from their friends. If men and women can understand their differences, they may be able to improve their relationships.66.Why are girls interested in gossip?A. Gossip teaches them how to act.B. Gossip allows them to use commands.C. Gossip brings them high status.D. Gossip helps them know about their friends.67.What do some boys want to prove by discussing sports?A. They are knowledgeable.B. The chances of success are perhaps even less.No law of causality (因果关系) exists to insist that in choosing a travel companion you will lose a friend. But it's not unlikely. The odds depend on the length and the rigorousness (严密) of the trip. Some friendships have a strength that will withstand even travel; others are by nature short-lived and travel merely hastens their dissolution (结束,终止).Perhaps I should make it clear that in discussing this matter of travel companions I am confining myself to Platonic (柏拉图式的) friendships. Intimate friends may well be the best companions of all. Compromises and concessions from such companions clearly spring from a recognized emotional base that colors every issue. I'll confine myself, then, to companions, male and female, who are sharing a trip solely for company. Why bother at all with a travel companion? Why not travel alone, shiftily (机智地) pursuing one's goal? Some of the answers are obvious. A pleasant fellow traveler eases the stress and tensions, adds to the delights and rewards and pays half the bills. However, a bad-tempered companion quite often brings you to the point where you devoutly (虔诚地) wish you were alone.Finding that suitable companion is something of an art and something of a gamble. But the choice should be determined by one important rule: travelers should be going on the trip with the sameidea in mind. They should hold in common a theory of travel.45.Choosing a travel companion is hard and risky, because ________.A. one may lose a friendB. one may suffer financial lossesC. one may be trapped in the dangerous situationD. one may miss the chance of finding the right marriage partner46.When intimate friends travel together, ________.A. the trip will hasten their dissolutionB. the trip will make them closer to each otherC. they will find the right ways to solve problems due to their relationshipD. they will make more friends on trip47.It can be inferred from the passage that the companion talked about here is the person________.A. one can think of developing a deeper relationship withB. one can travel with merely for companyC. one can count on for a free travelD. one can learn much from48.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Finding a Good Travel Companion-a Risky MatterC. Will Travel Damage the Friendship?D. Should One Travel Alone or in Another's Company?Questions 50 to 54 are based on the same passage or dialog.During the long vacation I was accepted as a trainee bus conductor. I found the job fiercely demanding even on a short route with a total of about two dozen passengers. I pulled the wrong tickets, forgot the change and wrote up my log (行程记录) at the end of each trip in a way that drew hollow laughter from the inspectors. The inspectors were likely to check at any time. A conductor with twenty years' service could be dismissed if an inspector caught him accepting money without pulling a ticket. It was hot that summer: 100° Fahrenheit (华氏) every day. Inside the bus it was 30° hotter still. It was so jammed inside that my feet weren't touching the floor. I couldn't blink (眨眼睛) the sweat out of my eyes. There was no hope of collecting any fares. In these circumstances I was scarcely to blame. I didn't even know where we were, but I guessed we were at the top just before Market Street. I pressed the bell, the doors closed, and the bus surged forward. There were shouts and yells from down the back, but I thought they were the angry cries of passengers who had not got on. Too late I realized that they were coming from within the bus. The automatic doors at the back of the bus had closed around an old lady's neck as she was getting on. Her head was inside the bus. The rest of her, carrying a shopping bag was outside. I knew none of this at the time. When I at last signaled the driver to stop, he crashed to a halt and opened the automatic doors. The woman dropped to the road. Unfortunately, the car behind turned out to be full of inspectors. Since it would have made headlines if a university student had almost half-killed a woman of an advanced age, I was given the opportunity to leave quietly.50.What do we learn about the inspectors in the first paragraph?A. They found the writer amusing.B. They never wore uniforms.C. They were feared by employees.D. They distrusted older employees.51.Why was the writer unable to do his job properly?A. He feels responsible for the incident that ended it.B. He thinks that he was unfairly treated by the inspectors.C. He is ashamed that he was incapable of doing it properly.D. He believes that it was an impossible job to do well.Questions 55 to 59 are based on the same passage or dialog.Urban (城市的) life has always involved a balancing of opportunities and rewards against dangers and stress; its moving force is, in the broadest sense, money. Opportunities to make money makecompetition stressful; it is often at its most intense in the largest cities, where opportunities are greatest. Crime has always flourished in the relative anonymity (人所不知) of urban life, but today's ease of movement makes its control more difficult than ever; there is much evidence that its extent has a direct relationship to the size of communities. City dwellers (居民) may become trapped in their homes by the fear of crime around them.As defense against these developments, city dwellers tend to use various strategies to try and reduce the pressures upon themselves: contacts with other people are generally made brief and impersonal; doors are kept locked; telephone numbers may be ex-directory (未列入电话号码簿的); journeys outside the home are usually hurried, rather than a source of pleasure.Inner areas of cities tend to be abandoned by the more successful and left to those who have done badly in the competitive struggle or who belong to minority groups; these people are then geographically trapped because so much economic activity has migrated to the suburbs and beyond.Present-day architecture and planning have enormously worsened the human problems of urban life. Old-established neighborhoods have been ruthlessly (无情地) swept away, by both public and private organizations, usually to be replaced by huge, ugly, impersonal structures. People have been forced to leave their familiar homes, usually to be re-housed in tower blocks which are inconvenient, and fail to provide any setting for human interaction or support. The destruction of established social structures is the worse possible approach to the difficulties of living in a town or city. Instead, every effort should be made to conserve (保护) the human scale of the environment, and to retain familiar landmarks.55.According to the author, living in a city causes stress because there are so many people whoare ________.A. anxious to succeedB. in need of helpC. naturally aggressiveD. likely to commit crime56.The author thinks that crime is increasing in cities because ________.A. people do not communicate with their neighborsB. criminals are difficult to trace in large populationsC. people feel anonymous thereD. the trappings of success are attractive to criminals57.The majority of people who live in inner cities tend to quit from the inner areas because they________.A. dislike having to travel far to workB. have been forced by circumstances to do soC. don't like the idea of living in the suburbsD. have turned against society58.Architectural changes have affected city life by ________.A. scattering long-established communitiesB. giving the individual a say in planningC. forcing people to live on top of each otherD. making people move to the suburbs59.The author's general argument is that urban life would be improved by ________.A. moving people out of tower blocksB. restoring old buildingsC. building community centersD. preserving existing social systemsPart 7 Fill in the Blanks (with the right preposition or adverb)(Each item: 1)Directions: Fill in the blanks in the following sentences with an appropriate preposition or adverb. What did you do?W: I was in charge of grading all the problem sets that were assigned as homework. I guess you can do the work when it fits into your own schedule, too, can't you?W: Oh, yeah, you can do the grading in your room or in the library. I've noticed you not acting like your usual, happy self.W: I've been miserable.M: I didn't know that. Maybe you can talk to me about your feelings.W: I haven't been able to talk to my mom or dad. What makes you think I can talk to you?M: We're talking right now, aren't we? And I'm listening. How about you step away from the edge so we can talk some more? Huh?W: All right.M: Hey, that's great. There are certainly many reasons for this decrease, from the improved health of older Americans to the number of two-or-more-job households. But a third of the over-65 population lives entirely alone. When middle-aged children in America announce that their 80-or-90-year-old mother "still lives in her own house", I notice that they are quite proud and satisfied. But do the old people in the United States like to live alone? No doubt some of them do. Or at least some of them prefer living alone. They don't like to change their habits or adjust to new ones when living with others. After all, independence is the chief virtue in this country.路漫漫其修远兮,吾将上下而求索 - 百度文库Independence is one of the things older Americans try to achieve in their lives. But if you live alone long enough, independence inevitably becomes an illusion. You can no longer keep up with the yard work, so you move to an apartment or even a center for the elderly. And you can't see well enough to drive anymore.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the passage you have just heard.1. What is the passage about?2. In 1993, what portion of American old people lived with their children?3. What is the effect of improved health for the elderly?4. What can be inferred from the passage?5. Every term students aregiven the opportunity to evaluate their teachers. Theyare supposed to judge their teachers’lectures, interests in students’problems, methods of exercise, and general ability to conduct a class. Then, when theteacher has left the classroom, they must write theirevaluation o the forms provided. They are notsupposed to exchange views or discuss theirresponses. After everyone has completed the forms, one student collects and puts them in envelopes. It is very difficult to evaluate another person’sperformance fairly. For example, Santa recently wroteirresponsible remarks about her teacher because shewas failing the course. Her friend Sam wrote amarvelous description of the same teacher because hewas receiving an A in the course. Both Santa and Samwere not fairly evaluating the teacher. They wereinfluence by the grades they were earning and wereunfair in their judgments.Another irresponsible form of evaluation occurredwhen James rated his teacher excellent because theteacher is “easy”. The arrival of digital (数字的) time has been changing the way we act and think. I believe that it has put us to a higher level of anxiety, with greater expectations of efficiency. The old, round, hand-moved time still kept a certain connection to the natural flow of things, to the roundness of the earth, and to the changes of light and seasons. Old, round time was outside ourselves, far enough removed from us so we could ignore it if we so chose. It is not so with digital time, which is a beat. It beats instead of turning. It makes a sound like the sound of the heart and thus places itself smoothly into the body. More and more, we mistake its regular beat for our own, thus mistaking the demands of the world for our wishes. Before wrist watches, time used to live in towers in the centers of towns. At that distance, it could be seen by everybody, but only if they so wished. It took an effort, an actual visit to "time". But then something happened. Time began to live with us, and now it is beginning to live in us.I remember what it was like to be a child, absorbed in the endlessly changeable thing of time. For me there was only child time, divided meaninglessly and quite painfully by the orders of the parents into Bedtime, Wakeup Time, and School Time. But within each of those divisions (分割), Eternity still ruled. Later, of course, they managed to infect me with the anxious demands of clock time. Very soon, all that remained was the anxiety of thatwhich was exact. The fast beats of the timepiece (时钟) cut Eternity to pieces.Occasionally, I stop long enough to recall the times of childhood, but not often enough. Like everybody else, I am helpless before the new technologies. Time is a virus, and it is growing stronger.76.Digital time has changed how we act and think by ____C________________.A. allowing us to work with more efficiencyB. giving us more time to do what we likeC. causing us to be more anxiousD. having us expect more of others77.The author thinks that the old clocks _________A___________.A. are somehow linked with the seasonal changesB. stay closer to people than a digital watchC. are connected with human's handsD. work better than a wrist watch78.Before watches, clocks were located _________D_________.A. everywhere for everyone to seeB. wherever a person wishedC. on the wristD. in the center of town79.In the author's early childhood memory, ____B_____________.A. time was a concrete thingB. time seemed to have no endC. he fought against his parents' idea of timeD. he enjoyed the anxiety of precision (精确)80.The author's attitude towards time in the modern world is _____C_______.A. positiveB. unclearC. negativeD. in the middleQuestions 81 to 85 are based on the same passage or dialog. The University of London is one of Britain's largest centers for higher education, with a name for international education. It's still there, ticking even more slowly. No, none of this was planned for the meeting. You'd love to get your work done, but instead you spend half your day in a meeting room.Office workers spend an average of 23 hours a week in meetings, according to the Wharton Center for Applied Research in the US. And, these workers consider only 58 percent of that time useful. It doesn't have to be this way. Here are a few guidelines for you to use meetings effectively, not eat up your productivity.1) Know what you want. "Know precisely why the meeting is being held and decide realistically what you intend to accomplish," says Gayle Brickman, a US communication instructor. "If you cannot write these two things down, the meeting should not take place."2) Figure out whether a face-to-face meeting is necessary. Would a group email be enough?A couple of phone calls? These ways would probably be more efficient with fellow workers you know well.3) Pick the right times. If possible, avoid planning meetings during your most productive hours. If everyone runs to the break room for coffee at 10:30 am, that would be an excellent time to have informal staff meetings.4) Be prepared. Read the plan for what needs to be done. Study the numbers on the project you're putting forward. If there are papers to be discussed, hand them out the day before to those who will attend the meeting.5) Keep track of the time for them. Set apart a certain amount of time each week for the meetings, and keep to it.If you still find yourself caught in meeting after meeting, don't feel bad. At least your organization obviously thinks your physical presence is valuable.86. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.Proactive Strategies to Build a Social LifeA) A lot of people believe that developing a social life is something that should just happen and develop naturally, without you needing to do anything. I disagree. I think that while this can happen for some folks, in certain stages of their life, it’s not always the case, which is why many of us today lack a fulfilling social life. If you’re in college where you get to hang around lots of other people and you’re naturally a social person, your social circle will develop on its own. But if you’re an accountant working in cubicle all day and you’re kind of shy and don’t go out much, your social life may be seriously deficient.B) In my view, building a social life requires the same active and strategic approach that making money or building a career requires. The approach is based on setting goals and acting on them. Coming from this angle, I want to show you some proactive (积极主动的) strategies to build a social life.C) A fulfilling social life looks differently for different people. Some of us need lots of friends and a large social circle. Some of us are more fond of having just a few friends, but who are very close to us. And some prefer a mix of the two. What is your preference? Do you know? Take some time to think about this and visualize what your ideal social circle would look like.D) Another aspect to think about is what kind of people you want in your social circle. Do you prefer people who are artistic, or people who are tech-oriented? People who are outdoorsy or prefer to be indoors? Usually, you will get along best with individuals who are similar to you. So I advise you to consider your dominant traits and consciously decide which of these traits are important for you to find in others. If you know what kind of people you want in your life, you’re much more likely to find them.E) Once you know how many and what kind of friends you’re looking for, it’stime to take action in order to meet them. This m ay seem obvious, but it’s something many of us ignore: If you just wait for others to come to you, you’ll never build a social circle. You must have the initiative and go to them.F) My recommendation here is to think about activities where you are likely to meet people you’d enjoy interacting with, and get involved in a few of them. For instance, you may take a class on a topic you’re interested in. You may volunteer for a charity organization or join some sort of club. Even if you don’t have any friends whatsoever at this point, you can apply this strategy. You can get involved in such activities all by yourself, and you’ll meet others there.G) In using this strategy, the Internet is your friend. You can discover all sorts of classes, social events, clubs and organizations near you online. But keep in mind that this is only the first step. Then you need to actually get out of the house, go there and participate.H) So you attend a training program on, let’s say, urban photography. There are lots of other people there. What do you do? In general, the passive approach tends to prevail. Many of us just sit around doing nothing and expect others to come talk to us, ask us questions, and be chatty. And this may happen, or it may not. One thing I’m certain of,though, is that it’s not the best approach. You want to be friendly first. Be the one to break the ice.I) Walk up to other people and introduce yourself to them. Then start chatting with them. For example, ask them how they found out about the event, how long they’ve been interested in urban photography, change from there into other topics, and if they seem to enjoy talking to you (which they almost always will), keep the conversation going. Doing this may not be easy at first, especially if you’re not used to being this outgoing, but it’s something you get used to with practice. The trick is not to let hesitancy prevent you from being social. And I can tell from experience that if you are social and friendly with new people first, they’ll love you for it.J) If you’re building a new social life from scratch, the beginning is always the hardest part. However, once you’ve met a few people, it gets a lot easier because you can then make use of them to meet even more people. You can then meet some of their friends and acquaintances, and expand your social circle further.K) Again, a proactive approach works miracles. Let your friends know that you’re interested in meeting new people and you’d love to be introduced to other people they know. If they indeed ar e your friends, they’ll love to help you out. They may invite you to come with them to parties they go to, they may call other people to join you when you go out, and they’ll introduce you to new people. But you have to let them know their help is desired.L) The best part is that the bigger your social circle becomes, the easier it is to employ this strategy. Your social life will expand faster and faster, and you’ll find it progressively easier to find people you match well with.M) Your social life is completely in your hands. You can have a social life as rich, connected and diverse as you want. All you need is to do a bit of smart planning in this area, and take massive action. There is certainly no shortage of possibilities to meet people and make fr iends. It’s up to you to capitalize on them. Good luck!1)You will meet some people you would like to interact with when you take part in some activities. F2)People’s ideas of a satisfying social life vary from person to person. C3)You can enlarge your social circle by taking advantage of your current friends. J4)Nowadays many people lack a happy and satisfying social life because their social life doesn’t always develop naturally as they think. A5)You have complete control over your social life and you can have a fulfilling one by making plans and taking actions. M6)The common thing between building a social life and building a career is that they both require using some methods and strategies actively. B7)It’s not easy to be outgoing and sociable among the people you don’t know, but you’ll be used to it with practice. I8)It will be helpful in building your ideal social circle if you know your major characteristics and personality. D9)Many people often ignore that they should go to find friends actively and not simply wait for others to come to them. E10)Suppose you participate in a training program, you are advised to be friendly and break the silence first. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to each question. When the telephone rings late at night, most women guess it must be one of only four or five people calling. A sister? Maybe. An emergency? Possibly. A mother? Probably not at that time of night. Much more likely it is a close female friend—someone calling to tell you that she has split up with her boyfriend again or perhaps simply that a good movie has just started on TV.At a time when families are spread far and wide and marriages often end in divorce, friendships of intimacy and trust are becoming more and more important. Erika, a 32-year-old lawyer, is strengthened by her ten-year friendship with her married friend Jane. “I was very sick one night, and so I called Jane at about 3:00a.m. to talk about it,” she says. “She was very supportive and even came over to take me to the doctor’s the next morning.”As American TV shows like Friends, which follows the lives of a very close group of young friends, have become very popular, many of us are beginning to see the value of such friendships. TV shows like this tell us that our romantic relationships may not last, but we need to keep in touch with ourclose friends if we want to survive. Also, a TV show called Real Women is about the lives and relationships of five former school friends. In this show, family, husbands, and work are all less important than friendships. Friendship is about commitment and loyalty. This is true of Erika and Jane’s friendship. It is not the kind of thing that you could ask anyone to do, but she knows I would do the same for her.” Jane, who may move to a different city soon, is worried about leaving such a support system of friends. “My friends have more to do with my life than my parents and, therefore, I don’t have to spend a lot of time explaining things to them. Friends are more up to date with what is happening.”11)Friendship is becoming more important because ________.A. people often do not live near their familiesB. people do not getalong with their families C. families are not as dependable asfriends D. all marriages end in divorce12)Friends have become more important than family because ________.A. friends are more intimate than family membersB. friends need tobe together all the time C. friends are there when these people needhelp D. friends can talk about anything to each other13)Good friends usually ________.A. see each other after a long time and are still friendsB. trust andsay “thank you” to each other C. trust each other and treat each othernicely D. do not always have to tell each other truth14)Why does the author mention two TV shows about friendship?A. Potatoes are very popular today. They are the fourth most important crop in the world, after wheat, rice, and corn. But in the past, potatoes were not always popular. People in Europe started to eat them only 200 years ago!In the 1500s, the Spanish went to South America to look for gold. There, they found people eating potatoes for 7000 years! The Spanish brought the potato back to Europe with them. But people in Europe did not like this strange vegetable. Some people thought that if you ate potatoes, your skin would look like the skin of a potato. Other people could not believe that you ate the underground part of the plant, so they ate the leaves instead. This made themsick because there is poison in the leaves. Others grew potatoes for their flowers. At one time in France, potato flowers were one of the most expensive flowers.Around 1780, the people of Ireland started to eat potatoes. They found that potatoes had many advantages. The potato grew on poor land, and it grew well in their cold and rainy climate. It gave more food than any other plant, and it needed little work. All they had to do was to plant the potatoes, and then they could do other work on the farm. On a small piece of land, a farmer could grow enough potatoes to feed his family. A person could eat eight to ten pounds of potatoes a day, with some milk or cheese, and be very healthy. Soon, potatoes became the main food in Ireland. In 1845, a disease killed all the potatoes in Ireland. Two million people died of hunger. Many Irish who did not die came to the United States at this time.In other parts of Europe, people did not want to change their old food habits. They might go on blind dates set up by family and friends. They might write personal ads to place in newspapers. Or they might use a computer to help them in their search for a soul mate by joining an online dating service. But in the final show, the woman he eventually chose decided she didn’t want to marry him after all. “I think you’ve chosen me because you have to choose someone,” she said. Each thing in the basket had a(n) 30) special meaning and by figuring out the secret message contained in each item, the person who 31) (deserved) to receive the basket could determine the true feelings of the giver. This idea of sending gifts of love with 32) concealed meanings quickly spread to Germany, France, and England. 33) Unfortunately , over time, only sending flowers remained popular.A 34) bunch of flowers told young ladies about the feelings in the hearts of young men. Each 35) cute flower had a different meaning. For example, pink flowers 36) (confessed)the feeling, “My love for you is strong and great.” The flowers from an orange tree meant, “You’re beautiful and pure.” Yellow roses, 37) on the other hand , meant, “I saw you with someone else.” Many flower dictionaries were made to help young people in love 38) (clarify) the meaning of the flowers they received. Not all of the dictionaries agreed 39) on the definite meaning of each flower, though, so a person had to be 40) cautious about what flowers they chose to send. For example, 41) depending on which dictionary you used and which color you gave, a young man’s roses could42) convey different meanings, “I love you,” “love is dangerous,” or even, “my love has decreased.” The 43) notion of using flowers to send messages had fallen out of 44) fashion by the 1880s. Afterwards, sending love letters, a 45) (more direct) way to express love commenced. Today, flowers are still considered a lovely gift, but the meaning for each kind of flowers has been lost.26)A. averageB. popularC. familiarD. standard27)A. UsuallyB. MostlyC. ChieflyD. In many cultures, young men and women are46) daring to choose their own marriage partners. In some cultures, however, parents 47) reserve the right to arrange their children’s marriages. Such arranged marriages have both advantages and disadvantages. One advantage of having parents arrange a marriage is financial 48) security . Of course, money doesn’t automatically bring happiness, but a 49) lack of money certainly causes stress in any relationship. A second advantage of an arranged marriage is that parents may 50) make a better choice than their children. They are not only older but also more 51) superior in life experience. Also, parents have been married; therefore, they know better what qualities are 52) desirable in a spouse. On the other hand, arranged marriages may have some disadvantages. One obvious disadvantage is that parents may choose a wrong person in 53) haste , and the young couple may never be happy together. A second obvious disadvantage is that a young man or woman may already have 54) fallen in love with someone else. If the parents force their children to tie the knot, the result will be a disaster to all concerned. In conclusion, neither an arranged marriage nor a marriage for love is a good 55) formula to be happy. No one hasso set a whole world laughing as the little man with the walking stickand the oversized shoes.Much has been written about Chaplin's art and his career, and opinionshave ranged widely. But perhaps those who called him "the truest humanbeing of our time" came closest to the truth. Those who have called hima genius stress the timeless and common qualities in his work. It is anart filled with sad elements and deep human feeling, with which an audiencecannot help but become involved. It is for these reasons, I believe, thatthe figure of Charlie has attracted generation after generation. All the writers who give accounts of Chaplin's life agree that Charlie'sunhappy early years in the area in London where houses were dirty and wornhad a great influence on his development and on the type of films he made.Chaplin himself emphasizes it in his memoirs (回忆录). The more one readsabout his earliest period, the more one tends to agree. Indeed, hissuffering youth had a lasting influence on him.Chaplin was never afraid to deal with subjects causing much disagreementin his films. He gave a humorous performance on war only a few weeks before the American soldiers came home from World War I in 1918. This was regarded as madness, but the performance was well received. So perfectly did it hit the nail on the head that even the returning soldiers found it impossible to hate it and deeply appreciated this short and humorous performance on what for them had been an unpleasant reality. Chaplin gave numerous performances attacking capital governments, satirizing (讽刺) the cruelty of the machine age, and even making fun of Hitler.Years after his death, the funny films of motion picture actor and director Charlie Chaplin continue to be well loved. He is particularly well known for his success as a creator of humorous presentations that make fun of people, the establishment, or networks.71.All of the following about Charlie Chaplin are true except_________A______.A. he was born in the USAB. he was a great film actorC. he had an unhappy early lifeD. he made fun of Hitler in one of his films72.According to the author, Charlie Chaplin has been well loved bygeneration after generation because _____D_________.A. he set the whole world laughingB. his performances get people involvedC. his works appeal to people in different periodsD. both B and C73.According to the writers of Charlie Chaplin's life history,____C________ had a strong influence on the type of films he made.A. the society in which he livedB. the audience who praised and admired himC. his unhappy early years in the poor area in LondonD. those who called him a genius74.According to the passage, which of the following is true? The same is true in some smaller countries such as Spain and Portugal, where it is the only medium reaching a general national audience. In many countries, (Sweden and Denmark, for example) the state-owned television accepts no advertising. In many other countries the amount of commercial (商业广告) time is very much limited, as in France, Germany, and Italy. Russian state-owned television began accepting a limited amount of advertising in 1988.The chief reason that television is so well liked among United States advertisers is that it reaches a vast number of people at the same time. While it can cost well over 100,000 dollars, a 30-second commercial on network television can be seen and heard by as many as 25 million viewers. For companies that must make prospects aware of their products and convince them of their benefits immediately, there is nothing as efficient as television advertising.Because it employs motion as well as words, pictures, sounds, and music, television is a valuable medium for products that lend themselves to demonstration. No other medium is as effective in showing how quickly an automobile can move or how well a certain type of wristwatch will stand up under heavy use and continue to run. In the same way, it is an ideal medium for showing how some products can make a person feel better about him- or herself, such as long-distance telephone calls.76.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?CA. There is less advertising on TV in Spain than in Sweden.B. One can never see any commercial on TV in Denmark since it is notaccepted at all.C. The amount of commercial time is very much limited in most Europeancountries.D. French people don't have to worry about being troubled bycommercials.77.According to the passage, what is the main reason United Statesadvertisers like television so much?CA. It communicates information more quickly.B. Every household has at least one TV set.C. It communicates information to a vast number of people at the sametime.D. American people love watching TV more than reading.78.The word prospects in the 2nd paragraph means ____A_________.A. potential customersB. competitorsC. working staff at TV stationsD. partners79.Which of the following is employed in TV advertising? DA. MotionB. Sounds and music.C. PicturesD. All of the above.80.Which of the following statements is true? BA. Television is as efficient as newspaper in demonstration benefitsof a certain product or service.B. Television is a valuable medium in demonstrating benefits of acertain product or service.C. TV commercials can hardly help to communicate feelings.D. People use advertising on TV whenever necessary because of itseffectiveness.Questions 81 to 85 are based on the same passage or dialog.Failure to take time to plan and prepare is one of the major mistakes committed by sales negotiators (谈判). Related to this is weak information gathering. Neither your information gathering nor your planning can be effective without first engaging in negotiation with yourself or within your company, ., the agreements that may be necessary before negotiation with the customer.Once your face-to-face negotiating begins, any number of factors can influence the result. Going forth with a rigid mind-set (心态), givingconcessions (让步) too early, answering too quickly to each demand, not calling time-out, and not putting yourself into the customer's shoes, are common mistakes in many sales negotiations. Finally, not being careful during the follow-through results in a lack of success even in an effective negotiation.Let us take the case of Ted Jeffries, a newly appointed sales representative for a maker of kitchen equipment. His main line is prefabricated (预制的) ovens. In addition to building additional sales with existing buyers, he is responsible for finding new buyers in some rapidly growing areas.Ted had been very effective with a previous company selling a line of building supplies to buyers by telephone. So he is not without some experience. He has some very positive selling strengths and he is doing reasonably well in closing some early sales. But he is beginning to find that some sales come at a "higher price" than others. Let's see what seems to be his problem. Ted is making his first call to long-time buyers, Lexington Kitchens. He hopes to renegotiate (重新谈判) the buying agreement with Ms. Sue Parker, manager of Lexington.81.According to the passage, what must be done before a sales negotiator(谈判者) works with his customer? DA. Information gathering.B. Planning for the negotiation with the customer.C. Visiting his customers frequently.D. Reaching an agreement within the sales network.82.Which of the following is NOT listed as one of the mistakes that asales negotiator tends to make?DA. Not flexible (灵活机动的) enough.B. Giving in to customers' demands too easily.C. Not being aware of the proper time to stop negotiating for themoment.D. Not leaving enough time to the other party for thinking about thepurchase.83.According to the passage, what is a sales negotiator advised to doafter an effective negotiation?BA. Prepare for the next negotiation immediately.B. Spend some time on follow-up activities.C. Hold a celebration to encourage himself.D. Call the buyer immediately to express gratitude for their purchase.84.Which of the following statements about Ted is true? AA. He is a salesperson with a fair amount of experience.B. u校园新视野⼤学英语第三版读写教程quiz答案长篇阅读10题,总分值:20分Directions:You are going to read a passage with 10 statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Take some time to think about this and visualize what your ideal social circle would look like. D) Another aspect to think about is what kind of people you want in your social circle. Much more likely it is a close female friend—someone calling to tell you that she has split up with her boyfriend again or perhaps simply that a good movie has just started on TV. At a time when families are spread far and wide and marriages often end in divorce, friendships of intimacy and trust are becoming more and more important. Erika, a 32-year-old lawyer, is strengthened by her ten-year friendship with her married friend Jane. “I was very sick one night, and so I called Jane at about 3:00a.m. to talk about it,” she says. “She was very supportive and even came over to take me to the doctor’s the next morning.”As American TV shows like Friends, which follows the lives of a very close group of young friends, have become verypopular, many of us are beginning to see the value of such friendships. With Erica’s family 200 miles away, it is Jane who keep s a spare set of keys to Erika’s apartment and waters her plants whenever she is away. “Having Jane around gives me a certain amount of freedom. Or they might use a computer to help them in their search for a soul mate by joining an online dating service. Some people have even tried to find their perfect match through game shows on television. Many of these TV dating shows, including The Bachelor and Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire, have proved to have millions of viewers watching each week to find out which of the contestants will find true love.Of all these game shows, perhaps the one with the most unexpected ending was Mr. Right, which was shown in England in 2002. But in the final show, the woman he eventually chose decided she didn’t want to marry him after all. “I think you’ve chosen me because you have to choose someone,” she said. Many people like to stereotype (模式化) these schools which, while these general statements may be true in some cases, tend to be worse most of the time. People think that the students of these schools receive inferior educations. My school, an inner-city school named St. Ignatius, is regarded as one of the best in the state. People also believe that violence occurs on a daily basis, both in the school itself and in the nearby city. I cannot even remember a serious fight at St. Ignatius. People whothink that the teachers at inner-city schools lack love for their job worsen this typical stereotype even further. My teachers not only had a love for teaching, but they were also able to cultivate a love for learning in their students.Take Mrs. Borroni, my Spanish teacher, for example. She would often take time out of her class to tell her students about the numerous activities after class with which we should get involved. She loved her job so much that she stayed after school every day to moderate activities such as "Amnesty International" (an international organization that protects human rights) and the Spanish Club. Her students, including me, joined all of the clubs which she moderated just because she made them so interesting. After reading all of this, most people would argue that St. Ignatius should not be considered a true "inner-city school". While this may hold some truth, I am arguing that my life was greatly enriched simply because of the school's location in the middle of Cleveland, as opposed to a poor suburban area.91.What do people often think negatively aboutA. Inner-city schools.B. Stereotypes.C. St. Ignatius.D. Violence.92.What can the author never remember seeing at St. IgnatiusA. Amnesty International.B. A serious fight.C. A Spanish club.D. Inferior students.93.What would Mrs. Borroni do after schoolA. Give Spanish classes.B. Tell students about activities.C. Guide students in special groups.D. Help students love learning.94.Why might a reader of this article not view St. Ignatius as a real inner-cityschoolA. It is not in the middle of the city.B. It is in a poor suburban area.C. It enriched the author's life.D. It might be better than others.95.How does the author feel about inner-city schoolsA. The stereotypes about them are not at all true.B. They are not necessarily all bad, as they can be good.C. They are much poorer than those in the suburbs.D. The students there are more enlightened.Questions 96 to 100 are based on the same passage or dialog. In 1913, the United States government introduced a bold, new nickel. James Earle Fraser said his goal was to design a coin that would be "truly American." In his search for symbols, he found none more distinctive than the American buffalo. Choosing to show a Native American on the other side of the coin, Fraser said the new nickel had "perfect unity of theme."Production of "Buffalo" or "Indian Head" nickels began in February 1913. A single coining press at the Philadelphia Mint (造币厂) started turning out the nickels at the rate of 120 a minute. But after the first examples were introduced, The New York Times said they were "bad."Other critics said that the coin's "rough" surfaces would encourage counterfeiters (造假币的人). But the most serious complaint about the nickel had to do with its inability to stand heavy use. One coin collectors' magazine predicted that the slightest wear would remove the date and the words Five Cents "beyond understanding."In 1938, the Government staged a competition for a new nickel picturing Thomas Jefferson. According to a news item of the day, the Department of Indian Affairs didn't receive a single complaint from Native Americans about the design change. Collectors didn't seem to mind either.96.In the eyes of Fraser, a __________ is the most distinctive.A. nickelB. buffaloC. Native AmericanD. unity of theme97.In the second sentence, Paragraph 2, the word "press" means ________.A. publicationB. newspaperC. machineD. the act of pushing down98.The design of a buffalo was modified ________.A. because it was not able to stand heavy useB. because the words Five Cents were "beyond understanding"C. because the coin couldn't be pressed by the Philadelphia MintD. because the words were too high on the coin99.According to one collectors' magazine using a Native American and a buffalowas ________.A. a good ideaB. a bad ideaC. a perfect ideaD. a forced idea100.It seemed that the new nickel picturing Thomas Jefferson ________.A. won much praise from collectorsB. caused strong protests from American IndiansC. was OK both to the collectors and American IndiansD. was praised both by the collectors and American IndiansQuestions 101 to 105 are based on the same passage or dialog. In the early days of sea travel, seamen on long voyages lived exclusively on salted meat and biscuits. Many of them died of scurvy (坏血病), a blood disease which causes swollen gums, livid (铅色的) white spots on the flesh and general exhaustion. On one occasion, in 1535, an English ship arrived in Newfoundland with its crew seriously ill. The men's lives were saved by Iroquois Indians (易洛魁印第安人) who gave them vegetable leaves to eat. Gradually it came to be realized that scurvy was caused by something lacking in the sailors' diet. Captain Cook, on his long voyages of discovery to Australia and New Zealand, established the fact that scurvy could be warded off by the giving fresh fruit to the sailors.Nowadays it is understood that a diet which contains nothing harmful may yet result in serious diseases if certain important elements are missing. These elements are called "vitamins". Quite a number of such substances are known and they are given letters to identify them, A, B, C, D, and so on. Different diseases are associated with a lack of particular vitamins. Even a slight lack of Vitamin C, for example, the vitamin most plentiful in fresh fruit and vegetables, is thought to increase our chances of catching colds. The vitamins necessary for a healthy body are normally supplied by a good mixed diet, including a variety of fruit and green vegetables. It is only when people try to live on a very restricted diet, say, during the extended periods of religious fasting (斋戒), or when trying to lose weight, that it is necessary to supply the missing vitamins.101.Which of the following happens because of scurvyA. People become hungry.B. People lose blood.C. People become livid.D. People feel pain in their gums.102.How would the sailors ward off scurvy on long tripsA. They took fresh fruit with them.B. 长篇阅读10题,总分值:20分Directions:You are going to read a passage with 10 statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.A Parents’ Guide to UCAS ApplicationsA) To support your child through the UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) process, you’ll need to be aware of the key dates and —make sure that they are, too. “The universi ty application process is a minefield,” says Wendy Pannell, whose daughter is in year 13. It can be particularly confusing for parents who want to be supportive, but who have no previous experience of the university admissions service. “University has chan ged enormously,” says Andrew Swarbrick, university applications coordinator at the independent Abingdon school, Oxfordshire. “Parents need to remember that it’s different from how it was for them. They need to start with a blank slate.” With that in mind, here’s how you can help your sixth-former to find and apply to a university that’s right for them.B) Most schools will host information days that help parents to prepare. “Go to those sessions if a school is running them,” says Nancy Raynsford, whose daughter is in her first year at Liverpool University. Students should think about where they want to go and what they want to study in year 12, as the application procedure will get underway in the autumn term of year 13. But with 37,000 courses to choose from at over 300 institutions, how can you help them to narrow down the options?C) If your sixth-former has a dream career in mind, such as medicine or dentistry, they’ll need a specific degree to achieve it. If they don’t know, admissions tutors advise students to apply for a subject they enjoy or a course they are fascinated by. Make use of the resources available online, such as university league tables and prospectuses(简章).”I found the UCAS website a mine of information,” says Wendy Pannell. “It’s got all the deadline dates and everything in one place. You can also download apps and use Twitter —I’ve followed UCAS and universities.”D) Parents and sixth-formers should go to open days to get a feel for whata university is like. “We went to about 20 open days,” says Nancy Raynsford. “We sat in lectures and that helped us to understand what it was all about. I was designated as the note-taker so that my daughter could listen. I didn’t ask any questions publicly because that was her job, but my being there gave her confidence. We could talk about it afterwards, and the shared experience of having been there with her meant that we could understand the process as well.” “I went on a couple of visits to universities,” says Barbara Asante, whose dau ghter is now at Sussex University. “It’s important for the parents to go because you know your child and so you can see that a university or a course will suit them.”E) Parents should know important dates in the UCAS calendar and remind their sixth-former of them. All applications are made through UCAS and the final deadline for the majority of courses is January 15. However, most applications are submitted during the autumn term of year 13. It’s recommended that students complete applications as early as possible; although universities must consider every one received by the deadline, many make offers in the autumn.F) Students can apply for up to five courses. Entry for most courses will be determined by predicted A-level results and tariff points. A certain number of tariff points are given for each A-level grade. You can look at tariff tables online to see how many points each grade has. Many schools advise that students have at least one “back-up” option, with lower entry requirements, in case they do not get their predicted grades.G) As well as understanding and guiding your child through the application process, parents can help with the personal statement, which is a chance for students to show their passion for a subject. “Parents can help their son or daughter to begin their personal statement,” says Swarbrick. “Get them to explain what they find interesting and exciting about their subject,” he says, “as well as to say what they’ve done to demonstrate that interest. However, it’s als o important that parents recognize that their son or daughter has to write their personal statement themselves.”H) Parents can also help by being aware of the early deadline. The deadline for Oxbridge and some specific courses, such as medicine and dentistry, is October 15. If your sixth-former is thinking about applying to anyof these subjects or universities they should prepare well in advance. Students may need to take a test or submit written work. They are then shortlisted and could be invited for an interview.I) At the offer stage, parents should play a monitorial role. Offers are staggered(犹豫,动摇)depending on when an application was made. Offers can be “unconditional” or “conditional” – which means they depend on A-level results. Students have to decline or accept only when all of their five choices have got back to them. They will then have to respond by a set deadline, given by UCAS. If a student’s first choice is a conditional offer, they can also accept a second insurance choice, which asks for lower grades. “At this stage, parents should ask sixth-formers what the deadline is and when they plan to make their response by, to make sure that they are on top of the procedure. As the whole thing becomes more real, parents could help to organ ize another visit or two so that they get a second impression.”J) If your sixth-former did not get into any of their choices, then they can still find a course through UCAS Extra, which stays open until early July. They can use the course search to find out which courses still have places available and apply through UCAS. Another option is to go through clearing, which matches students with unfilled places on courses. It’s organized by UCAS and opens at 5 p.m. on A-level results day, August 15. It then runs until September. Encourage your child to keep calm, as clearing can be a stressful process. Expect them to be on the phone, contacting universities. Institutions say they prefer students, rather than parents, to call, so it’s best for parents to take a step back and to let their son or daughter speak for themselves.1)If a student is not sure about what subject to learn, he will be advised to apply for the subject he is interested in. C2)If a sixth-former graduate applies for medicine course, he should get to know the deadline for it and prepare for some tests ahead of time. H3)The advantage that parents accompany their children to the open days is that they can give their children confidence and help. D4)Many applicants submit their applications in the autumn of year 13 rather than in the January of year 14. E5)Students have to make a final decision about which university to attend by the deadline given by UCAS. I6)Students are recommended to choose at least one course with lower entry requirements. F7)Some parents, especially those who have never gone through university admission service, feel troubled and worried about the process of their kid’s university application. A8)Parents are suggested to go to the colleges on their information days to get well prepared to help their children. B9)Students who fail to be admitted by their ideal universities can still find vacancy in other universities before early July through UCAS Extra. J10)When writing personal statement, students should explain their interests in the chosen subject. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to each question.Worldwide, 40 million new passenger cars are built every year. A recent survey estimates that the number of cars will triple over the next 20 years. Most of this growth will take place in China. In comparison, the United States has been completely transformed by cars.Cars did not become necessities for families in the United States until after World War II. Prior to that time, cars were seen mainly as toys for the rich. By the end of the war, however, people were tired of saving their money. They were ready to have some fun. Unlike Europe and Japan, whose industries had been wiped out by World War II, factories in the United States could quickly be changed from production of wartime items to mass production of such luxury items as cars.As cars grew in popularity in the United States, there were also changes in lifestyle. Farmers who were once isolated from society by rural life now took weekend trips into the city. Also, workers in the cities no longer needed to live in inner-city housing in order to keep their jobs at nearby factories. Those who made enough money moved out of the cities and into the suburbs. Now that each family had its own car, going to work from the suburbs became a common practice.Cars not only changed the way people lived, but also changed the way they thought. Traditionally, because young people spent most of their time outside school in and around the home, the strongest role models for teenagers were their parents. However, once they had access to their own cars, teens began spending more time out with friends. Therefore, they became less likely to follow the behavior of their parents and more likely to follow their friends’.One thing producers paid little attention to, however, was safety. It wasn’t until the mid-1960s that consumers began to demand that all car companies include at least a few common safety features in new cars. These new standards eventually led to safety features such as seat belts, air bags, anti-lock brakes, and automatic door locks.11)Why cars didn’t sell as well in Europe as in the United Stat es?A. Because people weren’t interested in cars.B. Because fewerfactories were able to make cars. C. Because people couldn’t afford cars.D. Because fewer people lived on farms.12)According to the passage, what was the greatest benefit of cars to American life?A. They provided people with more freedom to travel.B. Theyencouraged people to drive cars to and from work. C. They led to thedevelopment of drive-in movies and drive-through restaurants. D. Theyallowed teenagers to spend more time with their friends.13)The main point of Paragraph 4 is that cars ________.A. caused families to grow closerB. changed the thoughts ofteenagers C. changed the lives of adults D. made everyday life easyand fun14)What caused the change of the car safety features?A. Many car accidents during 1960s.B. The regulations by thegovernment. C. The standards by the car company. D. Customerswho would purchase cars.15)What’s the main theme of the passage?A. The US has most of the cars in the world.B. China will soonsurpass the US in the car market. C. Americans’ lives have changed a lotwith the car industry. D. Europeans were living in poverty after World WarII.参考答案:11) C 12) A 13) B 14) D 15) CWhat do Leonardo da Vinci (达芬奇) and Albert Einstein have in common? They were both left-handed, along with other famous people including Pablo Picasso (毕加索). In fact, an estimated 11 percent of Americans and Europeans are left-handed.Most people around the world are right-handed. This fact also seems to have held true throughout history. In 1977, scientists studied works of art made at various time in history starting with cave drawings from 15,000 B.C. and ending with paintings from the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works of art are right-handed, so scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common. Many researchers claim to have found relationships between left-handedness and various physical and mental characteristics, such as blond hair, blue eyes, vegetarianism, and sleep difficulties. Other studies have found a higher-than-normal level of left-handed people in certain occupations, including professional baseball and tennis players, architects, lawyers, as well as prisoners. However, some of these connections are very weak, and others haven’t been proven. What makes a person become right-handed rather than left-handed? As yet, no one really knows for sure. One simple idea suggests that people normally get right-handedness from their parents. Studies have found that two right-handed parents have only 9.5 percent chance of having a left-handed child, while two left-handed parents have a 26 percent chance of having a left-handed child. Another common theory is that left-handed people suffer mild brain damage during their birth.Whatever the reasons behind it, people’s attitudes toward left-handedness have changed a lot over the years. Statistics show that although 13 percent of young people (10-12 years old) are left-handed, only 6 percent of the elderly are left-handed. Left-handed children used to be punished until they began using their right hand like other children, but today people who are left-handed are no longer looked down upon nor are they considered abnormal. For most people today either case is perfectly acceptable. There are even a number of shops now that specialize in selling products designed for left-handed people, such as left-handed scissors, can openers, guitars, and even a left-handed camera. Don’t you think it’s wond erful?16)From studying works of art, scientists have learned that ________.A. left-handed people are better artistsB. most artists are left-handedC. most people in history were right-handedD. cave drawings weredrawn using both hands17)What is talking about in the Paragraph 3?A. People with certain characteristics are better at certain jobs.B. Left-handed people are better at some jobs.C. Left-handedness islinked with certain characters and occupations. D. There are somereasons why people are left-handed.18)Why is a person right-handed?A. It is caused by the person’s parents.B. It is due to the environmentthe person lives in. C. It is suffered a mild brain damage at birth. D. Itis not sure about specific reasons yet.19)What can be assumed about the children of two left-handed parents?A. Many of them are left-handed.B. Most of them are right-handed.C. Most of them use both hands equally.D. Very few of them are left-handed.20)Left-handed children ________.A. are usually looked down uponB. are exceptionally talented likeEinstein C. are thought of as abnormal D. were often forced to become right-handed参考答案:16) C 17) C 18) D 19) A 20) DWhat is the value of the humanities? Why should we study the humanities given the current economic recession? In this new era of continuous unemployment slides and shrinking university funds, questions about the importance of the humanities in a complex and technologically demanding world have taken on new urgency. While the humanities may not seem as important as engineering, chemistry, or any of the other “hard” sciences, it still plays a significant role in the world. There is a great misunderstanding of what the humanities are and what they can do. People often assume that the humanities are just about reading the great literary and philosophical works and understanding the question of what living is for.I would argue that humanities – at least from a Cultural Studies perspective –is much more than reading the classic works and speculating about the meaning of life. In Cultural Studies, we apply theory to practice. Thinking and acting outside of the ivory tower, Cultural Studies attempts to produce research that engages with the public. As a cultural researcher, I am constantly asking myself the “So what?” question. Why does this topic matter? Why should people care? This continuous self-questioning helps bridge the gap between theory and practice. While I am learning for the sake of learning, I believe scholars have the responsibility to think about the ways in which their research relates to the larger picture. What is the point of research if it doesn’t affect the way people think about and act in the world? One thing I think Cultural Studies does effectively is rethinking the way we have traditionally thought about things. In Cultural Studies, few things –if anything –are taken for granted. Our research is largely driven by thequestion of what it means to be human. Through critical and creative engagement, we attempt to speculate on a question in a way that inspires people to imagine what might be instead of what is.This critical and creative engagement is especially important given the worsening state of the economy and the need for creative ways of being in the world.21)Why has the question of studying the humanities taken on new urgency?A. More people have realized its importance.B. It has become amore interesting topic. C. It’s driven by the current economic downturn.D. It’s compelled by today’s complex world.22)According to the author, what’s the assumption of the general public?A. “Hard” sciences are more important than the humanities.B. Mostpeople don’t know who they are and what they can do. C. People don’treally understand the meaning of life. D. The humanities are only to do with literatures and philosophies.23)What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?A. It asks “So what?” question.B. It argues to support the humanities.C. It produces research to get involved with people.D. It tries to think and act outside of the ivory tower.24)What is the author’s point in Paragraph 4?A. Do the research that will impact on people.B. Bridge the gapbetween theory and practice. C. Learn things for the sake of learning.D. Lake the responsibility to do research.25)According to the author, “rethinking” means ________.A. to think what it means to be humanB. to believe nothing is certainC. to question the traditional way of thinkingD. to use a unique way of thinking参考答案:21) C 22) D 23) B 24) A 25) C完型填空20题,总分值:30分Directions: There are some blanks in the following passage. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. If you’re in college where you get to hang around lots of other people and you’re naturally a social perso n, your social circle will develop on its own. This may seem obvious, but it’s s omething many of us ignore: If you just wait for others to come to you, you’ll never build a social circle. One thing I’m certain of, though, is that it’s not t he best approach. You want to be friendly first. Be the one to break the ice.I) Walk up to other people and introduce yourself to them. Then start chatting with them. For example, ask them how they found out about the event, how long they’ve been interes ted in urban photography, change from there into other topics, and if they seem to enjoy talking to you (which they almost always will), keep the conversation going. If they indeed are your friends, they’ll lov e to help you out. There is certainly no shortage of possibilities to meet people and make friends. It’s up to you to ca pitalize on them. “She was very su pportive and even came over to take me to the doctor’s the next morning.”As American TV shows like Friends, which follows the lives of a very close group of young friends, have become very popular, many of us are beginning to see the value of such friendships. With Erica’s family 200 miles away, it is Jane who keeps a spare set of keys to E rika’s apartment and waters her plants whenever she is away. “Having Jane around gives me a certain amount of freedom. But in the final show, the woman he eventual ly chose decided she didn’t want to marry him after all. “I think you’ve chosen me because you have to choose someone,” she said. Maybe this was because she already knew he had fallen in love with the show’s host! After leaving the show, Gerrard-Wright a nd the show’s host Jonsson tied the knot in Sweden. Many people like to stereotype (模式化) these schools which, while these general statements may be true in some cases, tend to be worse most of the time. People think that the students of these schools receive inferior educations. My school, an inner-city school named St. Ignatius, is regarded as one of the best in the state. People also believe that violence occurs on a daily basis, both in the school itself and in the nearby city.I cannot even remember a serious fight at St. Ignatius. People who think that the teachers at inner-city schools lack love for their job worsen this typical stereotype even further. While this may hold some truth, I am arguing that my life was greatly enriched simply because of the school's location in the middle of Cleveland, as opposed to a poor suburban area.91.What do people often think negatively about?A. Inner-city schools.B. Stereotypes.C. St. Ignatius.D. Violence.92.What can the author never remember seeing at St. Ignatius?A. Amnesty International.B. A serious fight.C. A Spanish club.D. Inferior students.93.What would Mrs. Borroni do after school?A. Give Spanish classes.B. Tell students about activities.C. Guide students in special groups.D. Help students love learning.94.Why might a reader of this article not view St. Ignatius as a realinner-city school?A. It is not in the middle of the city.B. It is in a poor suburban area.C. It enriched the author's life.D. It might be better than others.95.How does the author feel about inner-city schools?A. Choosing to show a Native American on the other side of the coin, Fraser said the new nickel had "perfect unity of theme."Production of "Buffalo" or "Indian Head" nickels began in February 1913.A single coining press at the Philadelphia Mint (造币厂) started turning out the nickels at the rate of 120 a minute. Collectors didn't seem to mind either.96.In the eyes of Fraser, a __________ is the most distinctive.A. nickelB. buffaloC. Native AmericanD. unity of theme97.In the second sentence, Paragraph 2, the word "press" means ________.A. publicationB. newspaperC. machineD. the act of pushing down98.The design of a buffalo was modified ________.A. because it was not able to stand heavy useB. because the words Five Cents were "beyond understanding"C. because the coin couldn't be pressed by the Philadelphia MintD. because the words were too high on the coin99.According to one collectors' magazine using a Native American anda buffalo was ________.A. a good ideaB. a bad ideaC. a perfect ideaD. a forced idea100.It seemed that the new nickel picturing Thomas Jefferson ________.A. won much praise from collectorsB. caused strong protests from American IndiansC. was OK both to the collectors and American IndiansD. was praised both by the collectors and American IndiansQuestions 101 to 105 are based on the same passage or dialog. It is only when people try to live on a very restricted diet, say, during the extended periods of religious fasting (斋戒), or when trying to lose weight, that it is necessary to supply the missing vitamins.101.Which of the following happens because of scurvy?A. People become hungry.B. People lose blood.C. People become livid.D. People feel pain in their gums.102.How would the sailors ward off scurvy on long trips?A. They took fresh fruit with them.B. They stopped in places to relax.C. They often found Indians to help.D. They ate vegetable leaves regularly.103.Which vitamin helps protect us against colds?A. Vitamin A.B. Vitamin B.C. Vitamin C.D. Vitamin D.104.What supplies all the vitamins we need to be healthy?A. Any one of the different sorts of green vegetables.B. Diets like those taken by religious people.C. Certain important elements known by letters.D. Mixed diets with different fruits and vegetables. 105.When should people take vitamins?A. When wanting to be healthy.B. When joining a religion.C. When dieting to lose weight.D. When protecting against sickness.。

Sweep each line and pick up only a few key words in each line.Clustering trains you to look at groups of words instead ofone at a time to increase your speed and comprehension enormously. Most words that indicate only one gender havebeen replaced with words that refer to both males and females. A doorman is now called ________.A. attendantB. watchmanC. trash manD. server54.Which of the following is one important influence on our language inthe past decade according to the passage?A. The changing attitude toward the elderly.B. The changing job market.C. The changing role of women.D. The changing social opinions.55.Which of the following best summarizes the passage?A. Just as there are many different languages spoken around the world, there are manydifferent ways for people to use body language, too. He/She is interested in you.B. He/She isn't interested in you.C. He/She doesn't agree with you.D. He/She agrees with you.59.People may use different body languages ________.A. only in different placesB. only at different timeC. under different circumstancesD. under few circumstances60.What is the main idea of the passage?A. Body language is an important part of communication.B. Body language is affected by culture.C. Body language can be extremely offensive.D. Body language can tell you whether people like you.Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage.Grammar is an aspect of language about which learners have different opinions. You can learn therules of a game by simply playing the game. She may be annoyed when he simply tellsher how to solve the problem.
