One afternoon a few months after Tom and I were married, Max walked into the dining room, where I was looking through my old photos. Max was the son of my husband and his ex-wife.
These months I was learning to let Max come 16 to me on his own. If I moved too quickly, he ran away. If I was 17 , we often ended up playing, laughing, and recently, even sitting together on the sofa with a book.

“Cool. Who is that to me?”
“That was my grandfather. He died a few months ago.”

Death is always a painful subject especially for a seven-year-old child who’d lost his mother only two years before. I secretly put away the pictures of dead relatives. He began to finger through the photos. "Who is that to me?”

One weekend, he suddenly said, “I notice I don't call you Mom.”
“I noticed that too.”
“When I say Betsy, I mean Mom. Moms die, you know. I think it's maybe 24 if you’ re just Betsy.”
Tears were filling my eyes.
“Hey, Betsy?”
“Yeah,” I said, taking pleasure in the new 25 of my old name.

Still in shock! I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases (行李箱). Earlier that evening, I’d received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can.” cried my mother.
I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.
Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there’s anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn’t know what to ask for. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.
“I’ve come to clean your shoes,” he said.
I asked him to repeat.
“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral (葬礼). Give me all your shoes.”
I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.
When we returned to clear the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining. I couldn’t help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
Now whenever I hear of a friend who’s lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer,” If there’s anything I can do …” Instead I try to think of one specific task that suits that man’s need, like taking the dog to the boarding kennel, or house-sitting during the funeral. If the person asks,” How did you know I needed that one?” I reply, “Because a man once cleaned my shoes.”

Sorry, pot ato people! Although it’s probably no surprise that French fries are among the worst food you can eat, most of us still don’t believe it. After all, it doesn’t hurt to eat some every once in a while ... right? But some people feel guilty (内疚的) to eat French fries and they have a good reason for that.
According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people’s guilty feeling may be well-placed. The research, which researched potato eating in 4,400 older people between ages of 45 and 79 over the course of eight years, shows that eating fried potatoes at least twice a week highly increases our danger of death.
But hold up! Before you completely stop eating potatoes, you should know that it is found that eating potatoes overall (e ven a lot of them!) wouldn’t kill you. Instead, it’s the type of potato that makes all the difference between life and death.
Eating fried potatoes like French fries at least twice per week increased the risk of death in the study. On the other hand, potatoes that were not fried, such as boiled and baked potatoes, were less likely to cause death.
Why? Potatoes have healthy levels of fiber (纤维) and vitamins, so you can partake without feeling bad. But when it comes to the fried food, you might need to think again. French fries usually have lots of fat and added salt, leading to weight growth. Still, when all is said and done, connection isn’t totally equal to causation (因果关系). More research is needed before certainly concluding that eating French fries alone increases the risk of death.
Luckily, potatoes are still considered as one of your suggested three to five servings of vegetables per day. Just try not to eat the fatty ones, if you can.
41. How do some people feel after eating some French fries?
A. They feel sorry for themselves.
B. They are eager to eat more French fries.
C. They are satisfied about eating them.
D. They are unhappy because their risk of heart attack increases.
42. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. People’s reasons fo r feeling guilty.
B. The worst food that should be avoided.
C. A study about potatoes’ effects on people’s health.
D. Research on the relation between French fries and death.
43. From the findings of the study, we learn that________.
A. potatoes aren't good for everyone
B. much food can mean life and death
C. we shouldn't eat one type of food too much
D. how food is cooked is important to our health
44. What does the underlined word “ones” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. Fruit.
B. Vegetables.
C. Potatoes.
D. French fries.
45. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. People shouldn’t eat potatoes any more in daily life.
B. People should eat potatoes which have less fat.
