迄今为止，我国相继成立了近500家专营和兼营融资租赁的企业和机构，为我国航空，轻工、机械制造、电子和邮电等行业近7000个技术项目引进设备和技术共计150亿美元，成为我国利用外资、对国有大中型企业进行技术改造的一条重要渠道。
融资租赁是一种贸易与信贷相结合，融资与融物为一体的综合性交易。
鉴于其复杂的法律关系，不同国家和地区对融资租赁有着不同的理解和定义。
一般来说，融资租赁要有三方当事人（出租人、承租人和出卖人）参与，通常由两个合同（融资租赁合同、买卖合同）或者两个以上合同构成，其内容是融资，表现形式是融物。
我国立法者在借鉴《国际融资租赁公约》和其他国家对融资租赁的定义的基础上，结合我国融资租赁界对融资租赁比较一致的看法后，对融资租赁作出规定。
