I thought, “I can do that for Montreal.” With little hesitation, I devoted the next five years of my life to the project.I never walked through any shabby (破旧的) neighborhoods. From one end of my map to the other, all houses were well looked after. People went to great lengths to decorate their homes, and with this came one of the great pleasures of my walks: the different measures they took to decorate their frontage (正面). I discovered that pigs are a popular decorative element throughout the city. The type that is dressed up as humans, I mean. I saw pigs wearing dresses, shirts, and even swimming costumes.Every outing has its wonders. Never assume a neighborhood has little of interest to offer. You must be trained to seek out strange things. Otherwise, you might never spot the clothes on the sidewalks. If I stopped to collect everything I saw lying around abandoned, I could fit out a small country. Where did they come from? How did people lose their shoes while walking out ? A puzzle. As my project progressed, I felt like I owned the city. I could get off at any subway station and my feet remembered the route to the best shops. There was enough fun in my walks that I’d have a few laughs and feel more light-hearted than when I left.Anyone can get in on this walking game. I admit with some shame. I used to huddle (蜷缩) in my part of town, feeling isolated, but walking its streets has truly opened my eyes to Montreal’s full menu. Now I’m quite satisfied with what I obtain. So just head to a neighborhood to nose around. I can assure you that you’ll feel like a pioneer with the discoveries you bring back. 4.Why did the author decide to walk the streets of Montreal?A.She wanted to collect strange things.B.She wanted to do some research.C.She had to conduct a project.D.She drew inspiration from an article.5.What do we know about the neighborhoods in Montreal?A.The shabby houses are abandoned.B.People enjoy dressing up as pigs.C.People enjoy decorating their houses.D.All the houses are equal in length.6.What amazed the author during her trips?A.The houses in good condition.B.The clothes left on sidewalks.C.The routes of subway stations.D.The animals walking on the streets.7.How did the author feel on her walk?A.Cheerful and content.B.Excited and energetic.C.Relieved and grateful.D.Puzzled and upset.Jackdaws (寒鸦) are the smallest member of the crow family. They often live in a crowd. Indeed, when cold weather comes, they gather in the hundreds (and sometimes thousands) every evening so that they can sleep in the same place. If you’ve ever heard jackdaws during their evening gatherings and morning departures, you’ll know they are not quiet birds. Despite being fairly low-volume during the day, they are really loud on either side of their night-time get-togethers. Why might this be?A team of the Cornish Jackdaw Project set out to determine why jackdaws are so noisy before they depart from their sleeping spot. The team’s theory was that the morning calls might be a jackdaw version of“voting”. The researchers suspected that each individual’s call might count as an “I’m in!”. When a certain amount of “I’m in!”s are called —and so a certain volume of noise is reached -the group might then depart as a unit.To test this idea, the researchers artificially increased the level of calls during the jackdaws’natural morning calls. Their expectation was that, if jackdaws really are “voting with their voice” to decide when to depart the sleeping site, artificially adding calls would make them leave earlier than they naturally would have done. Subsequent experiments confirmed their expectation. The team therefore showed that jackdaws use their calls as a sort of voting system. You might wonder why this happens. The researchers suggest that individual jackdaws benefit from the voting system because they are less at risk of being killed and they can get more access to social information — such as where to find food.So the loud calls of jackdaws in the morning are therefore not the pure chaos it sounds like. If you are ever being driven mad by the sound in the morning, you can find comfort in the fact that the louder they get, the sooner they will leave you in peace.8.What aspect of jackdaws confused scientists?A.Their strong team spirit.B.Their preference for noisy habitats.C.Their collective sleeping habit.D.Their unusual calling behavior.9.What happened to the jackdaws when artificial calls were added?A.They stopped calling together.B.They left their sleeping spot earlier.C.They became noisier and more active.D.They changed their sleeping location. 10.What does the voting system mean to individual jackdaws?A.A signal of seeking food.B.A strategy for better survival.C.A way to attract potential partners.D.A method of displaying social skills. 11.What can be the best title for the text?A.Jackdaws are Noise Makers.B.Jackdaws Have a Complex V oting System.C.Jackdaws ‘Vote’ to Make a Group Decision.D.Jackdaws ‘V ote’ to Choose Their Group Leaders. It was extremely generous of the people of France to give the American people the Statue of Liberty, especially as the money was raised by donations from the public who recognized what the countries had in common. After all, both nations had fought revolutions to secure their nationhood.Nowadays, it seems as though the gift has been returned with interest with the foundation ofEuro Disney near Paris. Nevertheless, many French people feel it symbolizes a kind of “cultural colonialism (殖民主义)”. To tell the truth, I would not welcome the presence of such a theme park in the middle of England, for the same reason. Mind you, neither England nor France have ever been afraid to export their own culture and values.Anyway, it is not difficult to understand why they chose to build Euro Disney near Paris. It is a geographically logical site, in the center of continental Europe, right by the capital city with its own attractions and so on. All the same, was it a culturally logical decision? There is the issue of “cultural colonialism” which I have already mentioned. What’s more, do the French need Mickey Mouse when they have their own cartoon hero in the form of the brave little Gaul, Asterix? Euro Disney’s rival the Parc Asterix has proved a popular destination for families wanting a day out. By the way, Parc Asterix is an easy drive from Paris too. Millions of dollars have been poured into Euro Disney to provide a top-class attraction but the thing is, can visitors expect an authentic American welcome? The answer must surely be “no”! There again, Euro Disney is a cheaper option for most Europeans than going all the way to the States. All in all I would rather create theme parks which celebrated my own heroes than accept those from elsewhere. In a word, this is because it is not always possible to transport culture — like some wines they do not travel well. In the future I will take my family to Florida to Disney World and the Magic Kingdom. However, until that day arrives we won’t be going to Euro Disney. There is a time and place for everything.12.What is many French people’s attitude toward Euro Disney?A.They are unhappy with it.B.They show no interest in it.C.They warmly welcome it.D.They think it a reward for the Statue ofLiberty.13.Why did the Americans choose to build Euro Disney near Paris?A.It was a culturally logical decision.B.It symbolized the two countries’ friendship.C.There were no theme parks near Paris.D.The location had a geographical advantage. 14.What does the underlined word “rival” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Partner.B.Competitor.C.Neighbor.D.Customer. 15.Which of the following is the author’s opinion?A.Euro Disney can’t provide real American service.B.Parc Asterix is more expensive than Euro Disney.C.Theme parks should accept popular heroes.D.American culture isn’t popular around the world.Sometimes, it’s good to be bored“I am dying of boredom,” complains the young wife Yelena in Chekhov’s 1897 play Uncle Vanya. Of course, if Yelena were around today, we know what she would do: pull out her smartphone and find something fun. Today it is easy to get rid of boredom. 16 That is the finding of two fascinating recent studies. In one, researchers asked subjects to do something boring, like copying out numbers from a phone book, and then take tests of creative thinkings. The result? 17 In the second study, subjects gave more answers to a word test than a non-bored control group after being forced to watch a dull screensaver.“An restless mind hungers for stimulation, so boredom becomes a seeking state,” says Sandi Mann, the psychologist at the University of Central Lancashire. “ 18 ” Parents will tell you that kids with “nothing to do” will eventually invent some fun games to play — with a cardboard box, a light switch, whatever. The problem, the researchers worry, is that these days we don’t struggle to overcome these slow moments. “ 19 ” Mann says. “This might relieve us temporarily, but it shuts down the deeper thinking.” So here is an idea: Instead of always avoiding boredom, embrace and face it. Sometimes, anyway. Mann has found she gets some of her best thinking done when she is driving her car and therefore can’t be distracted by her phone.20 The good type inspires you to see what can come of it. The bad type, in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can’t be bothered to do anything. An important part of our modern task, then, is learning to evaluate these different types of boredom — to distinguish the useful kind from the harmful one.A.And there is, of course, bad boredom.B.Bored subjects came up with more creative ideas.C.But what if boredom is a meaningful experience?D.These moments are a lot more valuable than expected.E.Actually, tips on getting away from boredom are countless.F.We try to kill every moment of boredom with mobile devices.G.When not satisfied with your state, you’re seeking and engaged.二、完形填空On a June morning, Nicolo 21 working the whole night at a factory in Turin. In Interlaken, year after year, they would head up the mountain and watch the paragliders (空中滑翔) launch themselves into the sky. Back in town, in a large park, they watched them return to earth. “Some day I’d love to do that,” Thompson told Kenneth. But there was always so much to do in Interlaken. So she continued to watch the gliders take flight and land. Kenneth died in 2005. Eleven years later, and three decades after those walking holidays, Thompson finally took to the skies herself, in a paraglider with an instructor. Thompson was 80.Recently, Thompson heard from an instructor that grown men, when airborne, sometimes cry and beg to be brought down. But what she remembers is “feeling free. You feel weightless. It’s quite windy. It blows you around. You sail along and look around you, and see all the toy houses down below. You feel like you are up in heaven somewhere there, watching everyone down below.”Thirty years seems a long time to hold on to a dream. “It was,” she says. Why did it take so long? “I wanted to do it, but I felt somebody should benefit from it.” She did not think of just enjoying the experience? “I don’t think so. There had to be a cause at the end of it all,” she says. With her first paraglide, she raised £1,500 for Moorfields eye hospital in London, most of it with the aid of social clubs run by the Presbyterian church she regularly attends. Is she scared of getting older? “Fear? No. People say: ‘Isn’t getting old awful?’ I say: ‘No. You are free to do more things that you want to do.”Thompson felt no fear paragliding. “I mean, you sort of say to yourself: Well, if anything happens to me now, I’m OK. People might worry about falling, it being the end of them. But that didn’t bother me at all. When it’s your time, it’s your time. No matter where you are.”4.Why didn’t Thompson take up paragliding after her children left home?A.She was engaged.B.She preferred walking.C.She was afraid of heights.D.She had to tend her husband.5.How did Thompson feel when airborne?A.She lost his direction.B.She was scared to death.C.She regretted paragliding.D.She had a sense of freedom.6.Why could Thompson hold on to her dream for three decades?A.She got support from social clubs.B.She wanted to make it meaningful.C.She hoped to contribute to the church.D.She had a good cause to experience fun. 7.What’s Thompson’s attitude towards falling?A.Terrified.B.Helpless.C.Calm.D.Doubtful.For decades, India’s time zone has been a hotly debated issue. Back in 1884 when time zones were officially established, two time zones were used — Bombay Time and Calcutta Time. Indian Standard Time (IST) was introduced in 1906, but Calcutta Time and Bombay Time continued to be maintained after India’s independence in1947, until 1948 and 1955 respectively. The current single time, though a legacy (遗留物) of British rule, is often viewed as a symbol of unity. Yet, not everyone thinks it is a good idea. India stretches 3,000 km from east to west, extending across roughly 30 degrees longitude. This corresponds to a two-hour difference in mean solar time, based on the position of the sun in the sky. Thus, the sun rises nearly two hours earlier in the east than in India’s far west. In Northeastern states, sunrise can be as early as 4 a.m. in summer and sunset by 4 p.m. in winter, much earlier than the official working hours. This results in great loss of daylight hours and more consumption of electricity, and often reduced productivity.Meanwhile, recent studies point out that the current system leads to a serious problem in education for some students. Nationwide, the school day starts at roughly the same time; thus, children go to bed later and have reduced sep in west India, where the sun sets later. Such sleep deprivation (剥夺) caused by later sunset is more pronounced among the poor, mostly due to their noisy environment and lack of facilities that assist seep, like window shades orindoor beds. On average, an hour’s delay in sunset time reduces children’s sleep by 30 minutes, and an hour’s delay in annual average sunset time reduces education by about 0.8 years. As a result, children living in locations with later sunsets are less likely to complete primary and middle school education.Despite various requests and proposals for multiple time zones, the government is keen to maintain the current system. Reasons provided include prevention of confusion and safety issues regarding railway and fight operations.8.Which of the following illustrates the Indian time zone system since 1955?A.B.C.D.|9.According to the passage, when is most likely the sunset hour in December in the city of Varanasi shown on the map?A.7 p.m.B.6 p.m.C.5 p.m.D.4 p.m. 10.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word “pronounced” in the third paragraph?A.Noisy.B.Distant.C.Flexible.D.Evident 11.According to the passage, which of the following is a supporting argument for multipletime zones?A.The number of traffic accidents can be checked.B.Children may have better-quality sleep and education.C.Confusion about different times can be avoided.D.The country may remove the impact of British rule.A vast majority of people usually argue that cycling can make a significant contribution to our world. In reality, there is a gap between desired and actual numbers. In Germany, for instance, only 20% of the everyday short-distance trips are covered by bicycle. When enquiring about the causes, researchers found one point repeatedly tops the list: the perceived or potential risk on the bike routes used. Increasing the share of cycling trips thus depends crucially on well-developed bike paths. However, designing efficient bike path networks is a complex task that involves balancing a variety of limitations while meeting overall demand. In addition, many districts are confronted with a shortage of funds available for improving the infrastructure. Researchers propose a new approach to generating efficient bike path networks. This considers demand distribution and the route option of cyclists based on preferences for secure outings. Typically, minimizing the travel distance is far from the solely goal. Aspects such as attractiveness of a route are also taken into account.Under real conditions, a bike path network is created by constantly adding bike paths to more streets. This time, researchers start with an ideal, complex network, in which all streets in a city are equipped with a bike path. In a virtual process, they gradually remove less used bike path sections from this network. The route selection of cyclists is continuously updated. Thus, a series of bike path networks is created and is always adapted to the current usage. Each stage of it corresponds to a variant that could be carried out with less financial support.“We illustrate the applicability of this demand-driven planning for crowded urban areas of Dresden and Hamburg,” explains researcher Christoph Steinacker. “We are approaching a real-life issue here using the theoretic toolbox of network dynamics and compare efficient bike path networks under different conditions.”12.Why do people rarely cycle?A.They think of cycling as inefficient.B.They usually take long-distance trips.C.They’re concerned about the security.D.They’re unable to find special bike roads.13.What is a challenge for good bike path networks?A.Tight budgets.B.Complex routes.C.Maximized travel distance.D.Decreasing cycling demand. 14.What can be learned about the planning put forward by researchers?A.It will be updated once in a while.B.It is contrary to the real-life design.C.It ensures every street has a bike path.D.It serves as a model for other districts. 15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.Good Planning Gets the Bike Rolling B.A good Network Benefits More People C.Cycling Paths Change Crowded Urban Areas D.A New Concept Contributes to a Better World二、七选五Stare at a blank wall in any room, and you are unlikely to learn much more than the paint color. But a new technology can unnoticeably scan the same surface for shadows andincluding how many people are in the room — and what they are doing. This tool could gather information from a partial view of a space. It can spy on activity from around a corner.17As people move around a room, their bodies block a portion of any available light to create subtle and indistinct “soft shadows” on walls. 18 But these faint signals are usually drowned out by the main source of surrounding light. Sharma and other M.I.T. researchers separated that main source of surrounding light by filming a wall in a room as its occupants moved around and averaging the frames over time. Then the researchers removed shadows from furniture or other still objects from the video in real time, only revealing humans’ moving shadows on the wall.19 They crouched, jumped or moved around, alone or in pairs, outside the camera’s view. Then the team fed the videos into a machine-learning model to teach it which soft shadow patterns indicated which behavior. The resulting system can automatically analyze footage of a blank wall in any room in real time, determining the number of people and their actions.20 It can register only group sizes and activities for which it has been trained, and it requires a high-resolution (清晰度) camera; a standard digital camera creates too much background noise, and smartphone camera results are even worse.A.The technology is thought advanced.B.These can’t be detected by the human eye.C.Brightly colored clothing can even cast a dull, reflected light.D.It also can monitor someone who avoids a camera’s line of sight.E.Next, researchers recorded blank walls with people in various scenarios.F.The system is considered a unique and wonderful discovery by camera specialists.G.Although this system can function in any room, it performs poorly in dim lighting.三、完形填空It was just three days from Thanksgiving, and my husband, Gerald and I were on our25.A.broke B.ran C.stepped D.wandered 26.A.friends B.care C.food D.warmth 27.A.surrounded B.enveloped C.flooded D.welcomed 28.A.melted away B.picked up C.leveled off D.set in 29.A.gifts B.hugs C.money D.thanks 30.A.mixed B.special C.relaxing D.typical 31.A.generously B.patiently C.casually D.cautiously 32.A.Belief B.Laughter C.Music D.Noise 33.A.born B.exposed C.fixed D.split 34.A.attached B.encouraged C.connected D.touch 35.A.courage B.justice C.liberty D.understanding四、单项选择36.After two years of travelling and always having endless business to ________, I kind of lost my passion for the job.A.attend to B.apply for C.withdraw from D.test out 37.For many tourists, nowadays the ________ for travelling is shifted from shopping to food and scenery.A.aptitude B.criterion C.potential D.priority 38.By joining the club, not only have I ________ basic writing skills, but I also made some new friends with similar hobbies.A.deserved B.calculated C.categorized D.acquired 39.Their common experience created a strong ________ between the two friends.A.tale B.circuit C.mixture D.bond 40.When the journey ended, Zac’s adventure received widespread media _________.A.coverage B.proficiency C.negotiation D.consultation 41.The public ________ the government for taking practical measures to protect the environment.A.exploited B.applauded C.dismissed D.arrested 42.To keep their innovation ________ the times, Internet-based companies are sparing no efforts in digging into more core technologies.A.in tune with B.in conflict with C.in case of D.in place of 43.The iconic Beijing National Stadium, also known as the “Bird’s Nest”, has a ________ of 80,000.A.distribution B.capacity C.profile D.frequency 44.The hardest part of going back to college was feeling ________ about the time I spent away from my kids.A.ridiculous B.confident C.guilty D.excited 45.Some of these non-native fish escaped into other waterways. But sharing assets has been around for thousands of years. The difference lies in the development of the Internet. It has proven to be the most effective tool in bringing people with means and people with needs together at an unprecedented rate.People, who were not necessarily entrepreneurs, would rent out their cars or houses that are not in use to others who are looking for alternatives to traditional transportation and accommodation businesses. This peer-to-peer(点对点的) concept was simple, but its inventiveness quickly transformed their respective industries. They even transformed views regarding ownership—since using their services significantly reduces the need for owning cars or houses.Today, the sharing economy has developed into something involving numerous dealings over the Internet. Some of the leading e-commerce websites like Amazon, Ebay, and Alibaba have now become platforms shared by small businesses to display their products. Even the delivery of sold goods is being outsourced to different businesses. Although not as apparent as ride or home-sharing, these online shopping malls are also success stories of the sharing economy. The gig economy(零工经济) has closely been related to the sharing economy since the beginning. The former is defined by its system of filling temporary positions in organizations with independent contractors. It can even be said that the gig economy is a huge and essential part, but a part nevertheless, of the sharing economy. If the sharing economy is changing the concept of ownership, the gig economy is changing the concept of employment. Companies now widely share talents and skills in the form of outsourced help. Although this is not entirely a new occurrence, digitalization has been an enormous help.3.What can we conclude from paragraph 1?A.Sharing economy separates people.B.People make profits by selling their idle assets.C.The Internet improves the efficiency of sharing.D.Assets sharing is a new product of the Internet.4.What might be a potential result of sharing economy?A.Rise of house prices.B.Decrease of car sales.C.Fast delivery of goods.D.Success of new websites.5.What do we know about the gig economy?A.It features flexible staffing.B.It appears before sharing economy.C.It refers to hiring permanent workers.D.It narrows the concepts of employment. 6.What can be the best title for the text?A.Future of Sharing Economy.B.Appearance of Gig Economy.C.Development of Sharing Economy.D.Gig Economy and Sharing Economy.Climate change could turn the Arctic Ocean into a high-speed ice superhighway. Large pieces of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean are becoming thinner as old ice melts. The new ice that's replacing it travels farther and faster than the older ice does. As the new ice travels, it carries dirt, organisms and pollution along for the ride, new research shows.Researchers have been tracking the movements of Arctic ice for several years. They noticed that the area covered by ice making the trip from one side of ocean to the other has grown larger and larger. The movement means that far-away reaches of the Arctic are becoming more connected, notes Robert Newton, from Columbia University. The speedy ice is a problem, he explains. The reason: It increases the risk of spreading pollution from some environmental disasters, such as oil spills. An oil spill during the summer could become trapped in this autumn ice. The ice could then quickly move from one country's waters to another's, he notes, rapidly spreading the spill's impact on the environment.Between when it forms and melts, the ice can get pushed across the Arctic Ocean by winds and ocean currents. These forces more easily pushed young, thin ice along than old ice. Newton and colleagues wondered what the impact would be on these ice rafts and the pollution they held. Less ice could mean less space to carry a large load of pollutants. But a less crowed Arctic might let the ice travel farther and faster. In the study, the researchers put together pictures of the Arctic, which came from satellites far above the surface. They used the computer software that can recognize the edges of sea ice. This allowed them to follow the movements of the ice from formation to melting. To help them do that, they also included tracking buoys on the ice that had been equipped with GPS devices.About 60% of Arctic ice travels less than 100 kilometers from its birthplace, they found. The rest covers an area equal to tens of thousands of square kilometers. It can travel hundreds oreven thousands of kilometers. And that ice is moving faster as well.7.What does the text focus on?A.Climate change is becoming more serious.B.The Arctic ice travels fast and carries pollution.C.It's difficult to follow the movements of the ice.D.The Arctic is likely to be covered by the ice.8.Why is the speedy ice a problem according to Robert Newton?A.It travels much faster than before.B.It is much easier to pollute than before.C.It results in more environmental disasters.D.It makes pollution more likely to be spread. 9.Why did the researchers study pictures of the Arctic taken by satellites?A.To find out how far the ice can go.B.To make it clear how the ice comes into being.C.To learn about the original situation of the Arctic.D.To see how a moving ice connects itself with another.10.What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 5 refer to?A.Using computer software.B.Taking photos of the Arctic.C.Keeping track of ice.D.Collecting pictures through satellites.“They tell me that you’d like to make a statue(塑像) of me-is that correct, Miss Vinnie Ream?”The deep, gentle voice helped calm the nervous girl. Asking a favor of the President of the United States was no casual matter, especially for a seventeen-year-old girl.“Yes, sir,” she replied, her dark eyes meeting his. “I wouldn’t have duo ask you, but my teacher, Mr. Mills, says I am ready. I plan to make it in an admirable manner. “President Lincoln smiled. “Painters, sculptors-they’ve all tried to make the best of this ordinary face, but I’m afraid there’s not much hope. What did you have in mind, Miss Ream? A bust(半身像)?”Before Vinnie could say yes, the President hurried on, a shade of apology in his voice.“Of course-I shouldn’t have asked. A full-length pose would be much too big a project for a young woman your size. “Vinnie’s face turned red. She realized she looked like a child, with her tiny figure. “Small does not mean weak, sir,” she defended herself. “I was born in the country of Wisconsin. I’ve driven teams of horses and carried water. Making a full-length clay(粘土) figure would not exhaust my strength-and that is what I intend to do!”The President’s eyes, brightened at her show of spirit. “Sorry, madam, I have underestimated you as I didn’t know your background.”But his smile faded as he rubbed his beard with bony fingers, in thought. “Miss Ream,” he sighed, “I’d like to let you do it, but as you know, we are in the middle of a war. How could I possibly take the time to pose for a sculpture now? I hardly have a minute to myself.”Vinnie glanced around and noted the size of his office. “I work quickly,” she said. Her voice was soft but confident as she pointed to the corner near the windows. “If I were to bring my clay here and work for three hours every afternoon, I could complete most of the project while you are at your desk.”The President seemed to consider her idea seriously. He got up and shook Vinnie’s hand warmly, “I’ve heard that you are a talented young woman, and I have found you charming and intelligent as well. I cannot make my decision immediately, but you will hear from me soon.”The very next day, Vinnie received an invitation from the President.11.What gave Vinnie confidence to make her request of President Lincoln?A.Her aggressive personality.B.Mr. Mills’s encouraging remark.C.President Lincoln’s gentle voice.D.Her interest in a challenging job.12.How did President Lincoln first respond to Vinnie’s request?A.Pleased.B.Thrilled.C.Regretful.D.Doubtful.13.Vinnie confirmed her ability to make a full-length statue by highlighting ______.A.her experience from other projectsB.her innocent childhood in the countryC.the heavy labor she had done beforeD.the skill she picked up in Wisconsin14.Vinnie wanted to choose the corner near the windows to ______.A.achieve effects of natural lightingB.keep all her tools within easy reachC.observe the President at a right angleD.avoid disturbing the president’s work15.What message does the story convey?A.A strong-willed soul can reach his goal.B.Experience helps to promote excellence.C.Ups and downs make one strong.D.Devotion requires enthusiasm. In order to survive in the world with challenges, we need to be wise. 16 Let me tell you this, wisdom provides us with perspective when we need it and it calms us down in terrible situations. Here are some strategies that we can use to get wiser.17 This will open up new pathways for us. Never base your perspective on the most popular opinion or which is the most comfortable for you. Train your mind to be a judgment-free space for ideas. If you are humble, then you will always get to experience something new.You must be the kind of person who learns something new every day. Take new classes, read books and the list goes on and on. 18 All of these activities will help you to tackle problems from different angles, making everything easier. You obviously want to grow and do better in life, right? The best way is to have wise people as your mentors (导师), like teachers, colleagues and even special friends. Prior to making them a mentor, find out what makes them wiser, then engage in useful dialogue with them. 19 If you have accumulated a lot of knowledge, then why not share it with others too? 20 In today’s world, it is very easy to become wise but it isn’t easy to help others. So keep things balanced and never let go of your passions and values. This will pave the path to success. A.Why do we communicate with wise people?B.Why is wisdom crucial in this modern world?C.Change your routine and see where life takes you.D.Surf the Internet and clear out your problems that confuse you.E.Sometimes we ourselves need to be open to diverse perspectives.F.The more time is spent with them, the more transfer of knowledge there will be. G.Communicating with others and helping them out will also increase your wisdom.二、完形填空It was a sunny day. I had gone up and down the tower when, outside the door at the foot, a blind man came toward me. In a moment, he disappeared up the stairs. I looked at the sign that said “To the Tower”, and decided to 21 him.I caught up with him in the ticket office. There I was 22 to see the attendant selling him a ticket as if he were any other visitor. Then, with the ticket in one hand and 23 the wall with the fingers of the other, the blind man reached the stairs 24 to the hallway.“That man is blind. What would a blind man climb up the tower for?” I said to the attendant, expecting him to show some 25 , but he didn’t answer.“Not the 26 certainly, ” I said. “Perhaps he wants to 27 .”I bought a ticket and 28 up the stairs. The man hadn’t gone as far as I 29 . A third of the way up the tower, I heard his 30 . I slowed down and followed him at a little 31 . He stopped from time to time. When he got to the balcony, I was a dozen steps 32 . As I reached it, I saw him at the corner of the tower. At last, after ten minutes, I 33 him. “ Excuse me,” I said as politely as I could, “but I am curious to know 34 you came up.”He smiled. “Coming up the stairs, you will notice how not just light but sun 35 into the tower through the narrow windows here and there, so that you can feel the 36 —the cool stairs suddenly become quite warm—and how up here behind the wall there is 37 , but as soon as going opposite a window you can find the sun. 福建省厦门双十中学2024-2025学年高一上学期期中考试英语试题
福建省厦门双十中学2024-2025学年高一上学期期中考试英语试题一、阅读理解California’s Hidden GemsLost CoastAn experienced hiker’s paradise, California’s Lost Coast stretches from Shelter Cove to Mattole Beach, about 75 miles. If that’s too ambitious, drive the Mattole Loop instead, stopping to explore Humboldt Redwoods State Park, home to Avenue of the Giants, and the town of Ferndale, recognized by its Victorian architecture.Mono LakeOtherworldly in a number of ways, Mono Lake is an ancient saline lake on California’s eastern edge. No fish swim here, but brine shrimp do, and those draw myriad bird species that migrate along the Pacific Flyway. Distinct limestone formations called tufa stand out — literally and figuratively — at Mono Lake.Point ReyesPoint Reyes is pleasantly quiet, especially along its coastal trails. Look for wildflowers and endemic animals on Tomales Point Trail — which rambles for nearly 10 miles on this special, skinny peninsula, delivering gorgeous, foggy views of the Ocean.Trinity AlpsAnother stunning preserve in Northern California, Trinity Alps Wilderness awe s visitors with its alpine lakes and granite peaks. It’s an excellent option for day hiking, like Hidden Lake Trail, but also for multiday backpacking trips such as the 18.6-mile Canyon Creek Lakes Trail.Shasta LakeThis sprawling reservoir might best be experienced via houseboat. Once on board your floating accommodations, try your hand at all the water sports: swimming, water skiing, fishing, jet skiing, and more, all with regal Mount Shasta in the background.1.What can you do in Point Reyes?A.Enjoy fantastic views.B.Visit a natural preserve.C.Climb sharp peaks.D.Try some water sports.2.What is the best choice for people carrying binoculars and bird field guide?A.Shasta Lake.B.Point Reyes.C.Mono Lake.D.Lost Coast. 3.Where would this passage most probably come from?A.An advertisement B.A travel guide C.An encyclopaediaD.A nature novelTime magazine has chosen its 2024 Kid of the Year — and it’s Heman Bekele, a teenager who could change the way skin cancer is treated. As a student from Fairfax’s Woodson High School, Bekele divides his time between the classroom and the lab at Johns Hopkins University, where he’s inventing a soap that could one day treat the deadly disease. “I was raised under the thought that I could always ask questions, and be as curious as possible,” Bekele said. “ And this pushed me to the field of science.” Some of Bekele’s earliest memories were seeing farmers work under the terrible heat with no heat protection from the sun’s UV rays in Ethiopia, where he was born. This was one factor that made him tackle skin cancer after he moved to the US.At home, Bekele — who’d entertain himself for hours as a child by mixing together any household products he could get his hands on and seeing what would happen — began wondering how he could help. “ What’s one thing that is an internationally impactful idea, something everyone can use, regardless of socioeconomic class?” Bekele asked himself. “Almost everyone uses soap and water for cleaning. So soap would probably be the best option.” So Bekele began his deliberate trial- and- error process, which led him to learn about a cream- based skin cancer treatment called Imiquimod that did produce desired results — but can cost as much as $180 for the uninsured in America. Inspired by the cream, Bekele designed his affordable soap.Bekele knew he’d need an actual lab to refine his creation. Bekele applied to — and won— the Minnesota-based tech company 3M’s Young Scientist Challenge in 2023, securing$25,000 and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist”. Now, with the help of Johns Hopkins’ professor and biologist Vito Rebecca, Bekele has been testing the soap on mice at the university’s lab for almost half a year. The soap still has a long way to go: Testing, patenting it and getting FDA certification could take a decade. But even then, Bekele will only be 25 years old.4.What initially inspired Bekele to come up with his idea to cure skin cancer?A.The farmers’ exposure to the hot sun.B.His journey from the classroom to the lab.C.The deadly disease he once suffered from.D.His being named Time’s Kid of the Year.5.What do we know about Imiquimod?A.It was invented by Bekele.B.Bekele proved its side effects.C.It is effective but expensive.D.Bekele produced it for his soap.6.Why did Bekele participate in the Young Scientist Challenge?A.To meet Professor Vito Rebecca.B.To get support to better his soap.C.To gain the soap patent from 3M.D.To promote ready- made products. 7.What can we learn from Bekele’s story?A.Thinking and action mean potential success.B.Success will get personal desires satisfied.C.Being famous is a great thirst of the young.D.Geniuses tend to get things done creatively.According to a recent study in the Journal of Consumer Research, both the size and consumption habits of our eating companions can influence our food intake. And contrary to existing research that says you should avoid eating with heavier people who order large portions(份), it's the beanpoles with big appetites you really need to avoid. To test the effect of social influence on eating habits, the researchers conducted two experiments. In the first, 95 undergraduate women were individually invited into a lab to ostensibly(表面上)participate in a study about movie viewership. Before the film began, each woman was asked to help herself to a snack. An actor hired by the researchers grabbed her food first. In her natural state, the actor weighed 105 pounds. But in half the cases she wore a specially designed fat suit which increased her weight to 180 pounds. Both the fat and thin versions of the actor took a large amount of food. The participants followed suit, taking more food than they normally would have. However, they took significantly more when the actor was thin. For the second test, in one case the thin actor took two pieces of candy from the snack bowls. In the other case, she took 30 pieces. The results were similar to the first test: the participants followed suit but took significantly more candy when the thin actor took 30 pieces. The tests show that the social environment is extremely influential when we're making decisions. If this fellow participant is going to eat more, so will I. Call it the “I’ll have what she's having” effect. However, we'll adjust the influence. If an overweight person is having a large portion, I'll hold back a bit because I see the results of his eating habits. But if a thin person eats a lot, I'll follow suit. If he can eat much and keep slim, why can't I?8.What is the recent study mainly about?A.Food safety.B.Movie viewership.C.Consumer demand.D.Eating behavior.9.What does the underlined word “beanpoles” in paragraph 1 refer to?A.Big eaters.B.Overweight persons.C.Picky eaters.D.Tall thin persons.10.Why did the researchers hire the actor?A.To see how she would affect the participants.B.To test if the participants could recognize her.C.To find out what she would do in the two tests.D.To study why she could keep her weight down.11.On what basis do we “adjust the influence” according to the last paragraph?A.How hungry we are.B.How slim we want to be.C.How we perceive others.D.How we feel about the food.Flowers have a longstanding tradition as a means of emotional expression. When we wish to convey our affection, joy or condolences (哀悼), and words won’t work, we rely on the beauty of the flowers. One of the most famous examples of floriography (花艺) is King Charles’ choice of funeral wreath for his mother, the late Queen. He expressed his sense of loss through his choice of blooms: Myrtle (香桃木) for love and prosperity, paired with English oak to represent strength. How floriography influences our decisions has led florists to make some interestingobservations. First, they documented that 29 percent of people chose flowers based on the color of the bouquet, with red being the most popular choice. Red is the color of passion and is widely regarded as an expression of love. However, pink has sumless meanings, depending on where you live: in Thailand, it symbolizes trust, while in Japan, it is considered a sign of good health. However, this only begins to scratch the surface of floriography. But like all things in the world, there are good and bad, and some flowers are used to represent negative feelings toward the recipient. You might think yellow carnations are pretty, but they’ve been a symbol of defiance (蔑视) throughout history. Another flower best avoided is buttercup, whose yellow petals symbolize childishness.By welcoming the tradition of floriography back into wider culture, we can explore the depth of our emotions in unique ways. Take a look at our beloved emojis — we can talk without typing a single word. Sending a heart here and a fire icon emojis there speaks through their aesthetics, a secret language all their own. Flowers are no different. They were merely the emojis of the19th Century, still filtering through after all this time.12.What is the author’s purpose in referring to the example of King Charles?A.To prove flowers to be expressive.B.To introduce the topic of the passage.C.To arouse the readers’ interest in flowers.D.To present some knowledge of flowers. 13.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?A.Sending flowers was historically disapproved of.B.Buttercup was suitable flowers for giving to children.C.Giving flowers often leads to some misunderstandings.D.A second thought should be given to flowers to be sent.14.How does the author make his point about flowers in the last paragraph?A.By listing some representative emojis.B.By recognizing the popularity of emojis.C.By borrowing the similar features of emojis.D.By mentioning the similar history of emojis.15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.The Traditional Art of Giving Flowers B.The Emotional Expression in FlowersC.Social Functions of Some Flowers D.Interesting Observation of FlowersDuring the summer, a lot of people enjoy traveling, vacationing, and taking outdoor adventures when the weather is warm and comfortable. If you’re somewhere new or unfamiliar, it’s always good to get a proper idea of your surroundings. 16 The next time you are out exploring with your friends or family, keep an eye out for purple fence posts. What Does a Purple Fence Mean? The purple paint laws vary from state to state, but generally, a purple fence means no trespassing (擅自进入). While property owners may still choose to use “No Trespassing” signs, the signs are likely to be damaged or worn out over time. 17It can also be easily applied to different land markers. In addition to purple fence posts, you might even see purple trees. This practice is particularly useful in rural areas where property lines can be vast and not always clearly defined. The distinct color serves as a universal sign of private property, easily recognizable even from a distance. 18 It is a color that stands out against the natural landscape, reducing the likelihood of accidental trespassing. How to Use Purple Paint on Your Fence?19 It’s important to note that only about half of the states have regulations specifically regarding purple fence laws. Here are a few tips to get you started. Before you begin painting, ensure you have the right materials and understand the specific requirements for the application. Any paint will work if you’re using it on a fence, but use latex or spray paint for trees. 20 Correct application not only obeys the law, but also serves as a clear and effective warning against trespassing. So, the next time you come across a purple fence, remember to respect its message and appreciate the wisdom behind this colorful boundary marker.A.It may be full of danger.B.As you know, safety always comes first.C.Moreover, the use of purple is advantageous.D.A coat of purple paint has lasting effect, though.E.The color purple is the favourite of some people.F.To paint your fence purple, familiarize yourself with the local laws.G.Make sure your paint is clearly visible and marks the correct boundary.二、完形填空After the birth of my second child, I got a job at a restaurant. And I am one of them. Take my family’s last vacation. It was my six-yearold son’s winter break from school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a week long trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits to give up our seats and leave the next day.I had meetings in New York, so I had to get back. But that didn’t mean my husband and my son couldn’t stay. I took my nine-monthold and took off for home. The next day, my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight. Yes, I encouraged — okay, ordered — them to wait it out at the airport, to “earn” more Delta Dollars. Our total take: $1,600.Not bad, huh?Now some people may think I’m a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a bigtime bargain hunter, I know the value of a dollar. And I really do what I believe in.I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money’s worth. I’m also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn’t hesitate to spend on a good haircut. Quality lasts.4.Why did Delta give the author’s family credits?A.They took a later flight.B.They had early bookings.C.Their flight had been delayed.D.Their flight had been cancelled.5.What can we learn about the author?A.She rarely misses a good deal.B.She seldom makes a compromise.C.She is very strict with her children.D.She is interested in cheap products.6.What does the author do?A.She’s a teacher.B.She’s a housewife.C.She’s a media person.D.She’s a businesswoman.7.What does the author want to tell us?A.How to expose bad tricks.B.How to reserve airline seats.C.How to spend money wisely.D.How to make a business deal.WHAT ARE RIP CURRENTS?Rip currents (裂流) are like the rivers of the sea, transporting water near the shore back out into the ocean depths. The presence of these currents can be hidden by the wild movements of the surrounding waves. This means that as well as carrying seaweed and pieces of materials quickly out to sea, they can rapidly sweep away even the strongest swimmers. Around 80 percent of all lifeguard rescues are caused by powerful rip currents pulling a swimmer into danger. If you find yourself being pulled out to sea by an unsuspected rip current, you should remain calm, focus on staying afloat and, if you can, swim parallel to the shore. Your instincts might tell you to swim towards land, as this is where you’re aiming to get to, but the current will be too strong to swim against. Instead, aim to move across the current and into slower flowing water next to it. A rip current may only pull you just past the breaking waves, but in some cases they can take you hundreds of metres offshore. The strength of currents can be hard to predict, so it’s safest to stay on lifeguarded beaches and not to swim if you see any indication of a rip current.8.Understanding rip currents can help _________.A.prevent you from swimming into dangerB.transport water out into the ocean depthsC.clear away seaweed and pieces of materialsD.warn lifeguards against rescue in rip currents9.What should one do when caught in a rip current?A.Swim towards the beach.B.Swim parallel to the shore.C.Swim against the current.D.Swim away from land.10.The second illustration( see figure 2) probably explains _________.A.difference between various currents B.two types of zones off shoreC.an ideal route to surf in safety D.how rip currents form11.Which of the following is the path of a rip current?A.1000 metres off the shore beyond “HEAD”.B.The channel through the gap in a sandbar.C.Over the narrow stretch of a sandbar.D.The passage across the shoreline.Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way. The ideals for most philosophical writing are precision, clarity, and the sort of conceptual analysis that leaves no hair un-split.There is nothing wrong with clarity, precision, and the like — but this isn’t the only way to do philosophy. Outside academic journals, abstract philosophical ideas are often expressed through literature, cinema, and song. There’s nothing that grabs attention like a good story, and there are some great philosophical stories that delight and engage, rather than putting the reader to sleep. One of the great things about this is that, unlike formal philosophy, which tries to be very clear, stories don’t wear their meanings on their sleeve — they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for the reader to wrestle with.Consider what philosophers call the metaphysics (形而上学) of race — an area of philosophy that explorers the question of whether or not race is real. There are three main positions that you can take on these questions. You might think that a person’s race is written in their genes (a position known as “biological realism”). Or you might think of race as socially real, like days of the week or currencies (“social constructionism”). Finally, you might think that races are unreal — that they’re more like leprechauns (一种魔法精灵) than they are like Thursdays or dollars (“anti-realism”).A great example of a story with social constructionist taking on race is George Schuyler’s novel Black No More. In the book, a Black scientist named Crookman invents a procedure that makes Black people visually indistinguishable from Whites. Thousands of African Americans flock to Crookman’s Black No More clinics and pay him their hard-earned cash to undergo the procedure. White racists can no longer distinguish those people who are “really” White from thosewho merely appear to be White. In a final episode, Crookman discovers that new Whites are actually a whiter shade of pale than those who were born that way, which kicks off a trend of sunbathing to darken one’s skin-darkening it so as to look more While.Philosophically rich stories like this bring more technical works to life. They are stories to think with.12.What does the author think of philosophical stories?A.The meaning behind is very obvious.B.They are extremely precise and formal.C.They often cause conflicts among readers.D.They are engaging and inspire critical thinking.13.Which category might “Christmas” fall into according to paragraph 4?A.Social constructionism.B.Anti-realism.C.Biological realism.D.Literary realism.14.What is Black No More in paragraph 5 mainly about?A.Racial issues caused by skin colors.B.A society view on race and self-image.C.Black people accepted by the white society.D.The origin of sun bathing among white people.15.What is the best title of the text?A.Stories Made Easy B.Stories to Think withC.Positions in Philosophy D.Nature of Philosophical WritingThere has been a very serious decline in the numbers of shallow-water fish as a result of overfishing. People still want to eat fish, so the fishing industry must look at other sources, especially the deep waters of the Atlantic. 16Conservation measures will have to be put in place if these deep-sea fish are to survive. Research on five such species shows that numbers have declined by between 87 percent and 98 percent. 17 Many species could well disappear completely if the present trend continues. These are species that have been swimming in our oceans for hundreds of millions of years. The problem is emphasized by the fact that the decline in numbers happened in less thantwenty years. Deep-sea fish take a long time to reproduce and normally live for many years.18 The average size of such fish also declined, with one species showing a 57 percent decline in average size. This is of particular concern, as large fish tend to produce more offspring than small ones.19 The deep-sea species have been caught as if they were the fast-breeding (快速繁殖) fish like sardine and herring. It is like killing elephants as if they reproduced at the same rate as rabbits. The damage done by overfishing goes beyond the sea environment. Millions of people make a living in the fishing industry. 20 Measures must be taken to not only conserve ecosystems, but also sustain livelihoods and ensure food security.A.Billions of people rely on fish for protein.B.Many people now choose not to eat deep-sea fish.C.Unfortunately, their reproduction rate is very low.D.This puts them in the category of “critically endangered”.E.None of these facts has been taken into account by the fishing industry.F.Overfishing is a major cause of decline in populations of ocean wildlife.G.This has resulted in a sharp decline in the numbers of many of the species caught.二、完形填空When I was young, my mom would take me on Transportation Days.
