My husband and I only have one car. So after work, I always walk to his office to wait for him to drive me home.
One day, while I was waiting for him, a beautiful Cadillac (凯迪拉克) came to a(n) 15 near me. I was busily 16 the car when I noticed the driver. Sitting there, 19 in jeans and a T-shirt, I wanted to cry. It is so unfair (不公平) some people have it all.
The next week I saw her again, and after that it became almost 20 to see her. I would wonder if she and her husband ate out a lot and where they went. I wanted her to get out of the car so I could see her clearly. Did she wear high-fashioned shoes?
A few weeks later, this was 21 for me.
I was waiting in my usual place and the lady’s husband came over to their car. He opened the door.
22 the woman walked around to the passenger side, with a walking stick. She had a prosthetic (假肢) on her left leg.
As they drove away I began to cry. When my husband arrived I told him about what had 23 . He said he knew her husband and that, when the lady was 12 years old, she had an accident on the railroad. Both of her parents were killed. The rail company gave a large number of money to her because the crossing had no 24 ; that is why she owned such a nice car.

Lin Hanxing is a 30-year-old who lives in Beijing. She owns just five shirts, two pairs of trousers, four pairs of shoes, three books and a few other things. It’s hard to believe that only five years ago, Lin
英语试卷第3 页(共10 页)
was one of those people who couldn’t stop buying things. Back then, she had more than 400 pieces of clothes and handbags. But that was before she saw an online challenge in 2014, introduced by Joshua Becker, a writer in the US who was promoting (推动) a minimalist lifestyle. He encouraged people to reduce the number of their belongings (财物) to fewer than 100. Lin decided to give it a try. She threw away 90 percent of her belongings. She also cleared 120 people she never spoke to from her QQ and Wechat. After doing all that, Lin said she felt ‘lighter’.
We used to think owning more was the way to lead a rich life. But now many people believe that owning less is rich, perhaps richer.
According to US writer Joel Stillerman, people who are educated and wealthy are more likely to have a minimalist lifestyle. These people are saying, ‘I can afford to have less.’
But leading a minimalist lifestyle doesn’t only mean owning or spending less. Adam Lucacias from a UK research company Euromonitor found young people spend less on belongings, but more on short holidays and visits to the movies.
‘They are looking for a life that is all about culture.’ Alison Angus, the manager of Euromonitor, said.
So perhaps it all comes down to how we define (定义) ‘wealth’. Is wealth in life about buying more and owning more, or is it about learning more and experiencing more?
28. Which of the following leads a minimalist lifestyle?
A. Alison Angus.
B. Adam Lucacias.
C. Joe Stillerman.
D. Joshua Becker.
29. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. I can live a good life with no more education and money.
B. I can live a good life by experiencing less and learning more.
C. I can live a good life with necessary belongings and friends.
D. I can live a good life with less money and fewer belongings.
30. Lin Hanxing’s definition of ‘wealth’ may probably cover __________.
A. Owning fewer friends
B. Doing more learning
C. Having more holidays
D. Chatting less often with people
C
Considered as one of th e English language’s most talented poets, John Keats wrote poems that focused on imagination, human nature, and life. Although Keats didn't receive much education on literature, his own studies and interests brought him much success. Also, his own life situation made a
英语试卷第4 页(共10 页)
great difference to his poems.
Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middle-class family, the young John didn't attend a private school, but went to a public one. His mother was not well educated. H is teachers and his family’s friends considered him as a common boy who preferred playing and fighting much more to minding his studies. After his fath er’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother's because of tuberculosis(肺结核), he began seeing life differently. He wanted to keep away from the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.
At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying medical treatment so that he too might become a doctor. However, his literary dream had taken too much of his life, especially with his love for the poems of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, named O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written another full poem, but was sharply criticized (批评) by a magazine. However, it didn’t stop his dream of poems.
John Keats’next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story includes a farmer who falls in love with the moon and leads him to a trip of one boy's hope to deal with the limitations (限制) of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more story-based and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry because of his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” connected to his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would like to mix all that he learned together. However, a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and finally take his life in 1821.
31. John Keats' thoughts about life changed because of __________ .
A. Edmund Spenser's poetry
B. the deaths of his parents
C. the criticism of a magazine
D. his early education from school
32. What is the common thing between John Keats and his mother?
A. They received little education.
B. They went to a private school.
C. They died of the same disease.
D. They showed strong interest in poetry.
33. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Keats once had a chance of becoming a doctor.
B. The poem Hyperion wasn’t completed by Keats.
C. Edmund Spenser was the greatest poet in Keats’ time.
D. Keats’ family must have been very poor when he was young.
D
Hi, everyone, my name is Isabella and I’m an artist and fashion designer. But today, I’m not here to specially talk to you about art or fashion. Today I want to talk to you about dreams and stories.
Did you know that 4-minute mile once thought to be impossible? It was something outside we can
英语试卷第5 页(共10 页)
consider. But in 1954, a guy named Bannister achieved. 35 In the following two months, two other runners broke 4-minute record and in the following three years and 19 runners continued. And now, it’s common for an experienced runner to be able to run a mile under 4 minutes. It’s just that they didn’t think it was impossible any more.
So we should dream big. I have always to be encouraged to dream big. And I think when you’re very little and maybe don’t know any better it’s easier to do because there’s fearlessness before you become afraid of something. What did you want to be? A movie star, an actor or an astronaut. Maybe you didn’t achieve these dreams, as you got older. Because as you got older, you became afraid. It’s important to hold on your fearlessness just like a child. Because it’s fearlessness that helps us achieve our dreams.
I’m a big fan of what I called dream board. It’s just a piece of paper. There’re lots of pictures of things I would like to achieve and I put it in a place where I see it every day and that helps me. I started doing this a few years ago because I read a study in the US showing that people who made dream boards are more likely to achieve them. I know this may not be new or useful to everyone, but for me, the act of making my dream board every year and seeing it every morning really helps me.
Another thing that I really believe in is the world. I believe that once you have your dreams and begin to work for it, people start appearing in your life that can offer support and help… So let’s face it, there’s going to be a lot of challenges but to get through. I think courage is needed.
In conclusion, after all of this dreaming you have to work hard and put a lot of time into everything you’re doing and have courage because there’s going to be a lot of difficulty but just remember the world is trying to help you. I know that I’m not the only one that has dreams. Everybody has dreams. You just need to work hard to achieve them.
Thank you!

In 2015, US actress Brie Larson took home the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the movie Room. These days, the 29-year-old is standing her ground as a superhero.
Larson plays Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, in the movie of the same name. As a superhero, she has many superpowers, such as being able to fly as fast as light. The movie has become a huge success.
When Larson was offered the role, she didn’t accept it at the beginning. ‘I am not a person with much confidence. So, I needed a little bit of time to see if I can do it…’ she said. Larson is no stranger to Hollywood, but it’s one thing to win an Oscar and another thing totally to star in a Marvel movie. She had no idea about playing a superhero. There would be lots of promotional (推广) interviews. Facing all of these, she decided to go out of comfort zone (舒适区). ‘I was gonna push myself to do things that I never thought I could do. I challenged myself. ’ she said.
Larson trained for nine months. She learned kungfu, practiced weightlifting and so on. But the biggest challenge was that she had to work with a cat – an animal that she was afraid of. ‘I was sick the whole time, but I insisted to work with it by myself. I was fine.’
Varity magazine spoke highly of her acting. By playing Captain Marvel, Larson discovered her own weaknesses and turned them into confidence. Even just watching her recent interviews, one can tell from her body language that she had found something she didn’t have much before.

children often talk to their parents, far fewer than the Americans. More understanding lies in American parent-child relationship. I think we should not only talk often but open our heart. For example, when I got low marks in exams, I always talked to my parents. They helped me find the reason and encouraged me. I also shared my secrets and worries with them. A good relationship requires efforts from both parents and children.
As children, getting well with parents is of great importance to us. We should find a proper way to create a healthy parent-child relationship.
