Unit 32. Which one would you prefer to be taught in, single-sex class or co-educational one? Why?

A：Recently, my good friend has encountered a trouble to ask me for help. She was in a single-sex class, and she found it difficult to communicate with people of the same sex all day. If it is you, do you prefer a single-sex class or a co-educational class?

B：I think single-sex school may be better. Because co-educational schools tend to reinforce gender stereotypes, while single-sex schools can break down gender stereotypes. For example, girls are free of the pressure to compete with boys in male-dominated subjects such as math and science. Boys, on the other hand, can more easil y pursue traditionally “feminine” interests such as music and poetry.

C：I prefer to be taught in co- educational class. I think co-educational class is more interesting because there are differences. By contrary, single-sex class is more boring and it makes me fell frustrated to school life. In addition, we can learn many things that we can’t know in single-sex class.

D：I hold the opposite opinion. Here is an example, one mother, whose daughter has attended a girls-only school for three years, shares her experience on the parent community: I feel that the single gender environment has given her a level of confidence and informed interest in math and science that she may not have had otherwise.

E：I prefer co-educational school, in these schools we can better cooperate with others, and it is benefit for us to enter into the society in the future. On the other hand，single-sex class makes a distinction between boys and girls. Moreover, a single-sex class hinders youth from developing into full personality.

Unit 42. Which should be emphasized in education, knowledge or creativity?

A：Some people said that in our study, has the profound knowledge is very important, has the profound knowledge to have the good result. But it is also said that the role of creativity is more important. What do you think about this?

B：We have all heard a word, knowledge change the fate. In my opinion, I believe the knowledge plays a more important role in education. I also think the knowledge is the base of everything, including creativity. Knowledge allows us to broaden horizon and help us to solve many problems in a word. We can do nothing without knowledge. C：What you said sounds reasonable. Without knowledge, we can’t solve a basic problem, not to mention creativity. In the other hand, the main function of education is to teach students what they need. Creativity is not easy to teach and not in good requirement.

D：I don’t agree with you. I think school should attach importance to the creativity. Creativity is the origin of interest and motivation. It can bring kids many original ideas and also develop kids from every aspect.

E：I can’t agree with you more. Just as some say, creativity is the key to brighter future, like education. Now schools and parents are eager to stimulate creativity in children. They want children to do something, such as class experiments, to build up their sense of creativity.

A：Oh, I see. Knowledge and creativity are equally important. We must learn to combine them well together in order to improve our results.
