Exist?Obviously!Until Descartes came along in the seventeenth century, everyone assumed that we exited.Obviously.The fact seemed so mindblowingly obvious that it wasn’t re ally discussed. We could see ourselves in the mirror,we could feel pain and pleasure,we could think thoughts for ourselves and, more importantly, perhaps, all the world’s main religions assumed that we do exist. So we exist. No,you don’t!You don’t exist. That’s because it’s impossible to show once and for all that you do.There’s no proof. You might think you exist—that you are sitting at a table reading this book, for instance—but how could you show with 100 percent certainty that this is true? There’s no experimen t that could prove it.Although Descartes said just you could prove your own existence by the fact that you are able to think, this isn’t actually, according to the British philosopher A.J.Ayer.Just because we know that we are thinking, this doesn’t mean that there is a “you” doing the thinking. It just shows that the thoughts are happening, not that anyone is having them.Thoughts exists,“You” don’t.________!What a waste of time this question is.Although you can argue until the end of time whether you exist or not,it doesn’t get you anywhere.Unless you forget about this unanswerable question, you’ll be stuck thinking about it forever, and that isn’t of any use to anyone.Move on.Think about something more important! This very roughly,is the view of almost all philosophers, who prefer to answer other, apparently more useful,questions.Yes,but...You exist, but not in the way you might think.According to the great French philosopher Ren Descartes, you can’t show that anything exists—apart from your own self. The existence of the entire world can be doubted in one way or another, but the facts you’re having thoughts show that there might be something (that’s you) having them. This let Descartes write the famous philosophical phrase,“I think, therefore,I am”.16.Which of the following can be the missing heading?A.Forget about it B.What a ridiculous pointC.Think about it D.What a pointless question17.This passage is anything but a(n) ________.A.comment B.discussionC.argument D.debate18.The famous answer to the questio n “Do I Exist?” is ________.A.No,you don’t exist.B.I think, therefore,I am.C.Yes,you do exist.D.It won’t get you anywhereBMy late(已故的) father was a great believer in reading newspapers the first thing in the morning,a habit he passed down to me.Every day,I need news, features and comics, along with the smell of printing ink, with breakfast, even if I have searched the Internet earlier in the morning. When I sit down to eat my bread, the newspaper has to be there. When it is late,my wife says I look lost. Some need coffee in the morning.I need the newspaper, except when I’m on vacation. Then,I trade the_routine for coffee, unless the hotel hangs a newspaper on my door. However, the sword of Damocles(达摩克利斯之剑) hangs over my routine—a day may come when there won’t ev en be a newspaper. My younger friends insist this is the way newspapers will go.Maybe not in five or ten years, maybe it will take 20 years but the future of newspapers is unsure. My younger friends rarely read the print media these days. They want their news either onscreen or in a cool, small package they can take anywhere and read at anytime. The iPad and other similar gadgets(小玩意儿) will change our lives,I’m told.Even ebook readers, after a bad start, appear to be back on track because of the iPad.They insi st we’re now in the twilight(衰退期) of the newspaper business and the iPad may help to end it.Such a future is not something I like.Sure, there’s the Internet but it’s just not the same.So here’s a little exercise for those who don’t want to read the newspap ers any more.Buy one, find a quiet corner at home and spare an hour without distractions.Turn off your mobile phone,TV and PC,and lock up your wife, kids and pets.Start reading, from the first page to the last, and all the different sections and advertisements. When you reach the last page, you would have an experience that modern gadgets cannot offer.19.According to the text, the author looks lost when ________.A.he smells printing A.reminding people of their memories about familyB.making people treasure every grainC.arousing people’s patriotism towards their countryD.calling on people to export their culture17.Which of the following statements about A Bite of China is TRUE according to the passage?A.It only focuses on the luxury lives of a few people in China.B.It stresses the emotions of ordinary Chinese people in its shooting.C.It has been considered a “weak player” on TV since it was produced.D.It provides a unique view of Chinese from the perspective of humanity. 18.Which would be the best title for the passage?A.Sincerity and Reality,Great SuccessB.Food and Culture,Commercial ProgramC.Techniques and Art,Huge PopularityD.Patriotism and Respect,Tremendous InfluenceⅢ. Some children are naturalborn bosses. They have a strong need to make decisions, manage their environment, and lead rather than follow.Stephen Jackson,a Year One student,“operates under the theory of what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine,” says his mother.“The other day I bought two new Star Wars light sabers(剑).Later,I saw Stephen with the two new ones while his brother was using the beatup ones.”“Examine the extended family, and you’ll probably find a bossy grandparent, aunt, uncle or cousin in every generation. It’s an inheritable trait,” says Russell Barkley,a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina.Other children who may not be particularly bossy can gradually gain dominance(支配地位)when they sense their parents are weak, hesitant,or in disagreement with each other.Whether it’s inborn nature or developed character at work, too much control in the hands at the young isn’t healthy for chil dren or the family,“Fear is at the root of a lot of bossy behavior,”says family psychologist John Taylor.“Children,” he says in his book From Defiance to Cooperation,“have secret feelings of weakness” and “a desire to feel safe.” It’s the parents’ role to provide that protection. When a “bossy child” doesn’t learn limits at home, the stage is set for a host of troubles outside the family. The overly willful and unbending child may have trouble obeying teachers or coaches, for example,or trouble keeping friends. It can be pretty lonely as the top dog if no one likes your bossy ways.“I see more and more parents giving up their power,” says Barkley, who has studied bossy behavior for more than 30 years.“They bend too far because they don’t want to be as strict as their own parents were. But they also feel less confident about their parenting skills.Their kids,in turn, feel more anxious.”So for the sake of the children, parents should be strict with them in a suitable way and get more knowledge to be good parents.

B.Be suitable for.C.Be away from. D.Be equal to.18.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.Hotel expenses. B.Public transport.C.Outdoor recreations. D.International food.Ⅲ. Scientists,doctors and mental health professionals have been studying the connection between colors and mood for years. Many now believe that colors can not only bring about emotional reactions, but can also correctmood.Colors behave in three basic ways:active, passive and neutral(中和的).Active colors are warm colors, including yellow, orange and red. These colors bring confidence.Warm colors can also bring cheerful attitudes.Yellows and golden colors work well in offices, kitchens and study areas.Reds heat up a room.Passive colors or cool colors make people calm, quiet and satisfied.Bedrooms, private areas and bathrooms are great places for blues and greens.Beige, gray and white are thought of as neutral colors. They help to put the focus on other colors or serve to tone down colors that might otherwise be overpowering on their own.You can easily change the look or feel of a room by making good use of different colors.Mixing and matching colors is an excellent way to balance color and emotion, and provide a welcoming feel for guests. To create a feeling of warmth and comfort in a room, use bright, warm colors like yellow, orange and red. These colors are good choices for rooms that appear cool due to limited sunlight.Yellow adds cheerfulness to dull rooms. You can add yellows to rooms which are not closely related to happy thoughts, such as kitchens and laundryroom. In rooms where there’s plenty of sunshine, cool colors can provide a calming environment.Sage greens and sky blues are perfect for bedrooms, playrooms and activity areas.Neutral colors, such as pale gray, white and beige, send a peaceful message to your brain. It’s not a coincidence that most doctor’s offices, coffee shops and mental health centers are decorated in neutrals. To make your wall color choices better, pick out furniture that will provide a visual contrast.Cool colors make a room seem larger than it is and warm colors make rooms feel smaller.

1________the difference between the two research findings will be one of the worst mistakes youmake.(2021·安徽,27)A.Ignore B.IgnoringC.Ignored D.Having ignored答案B解析考查非谓语动词。
从will be one of the worst mistakes you make来看,will的前面部分是主语,因此用v.ing短语作主语。
2He wrote five novels,two of ________ translated into English.A.it B.themC.which D.that答案B 解析此题很简洁掉进陷阱误选C项,同学误以为后面是非限制性定语从句。
若在translated前加上were,were translated就成了谓语动词,这时才可以选连词which。

D.howⅡ.阅读理解(2014·南通第二次调研,B)Not very long ago,the question would have seemed absurd. Now it is on the lips of respected scientists;MPs(议员) are beginning to talk of “a war on sugar”,and even England’s chief medical officer ha s said sugar may have to be,like the old enemy tobacco, taxed in order to protect the nation’s health. There came a time in the evolution of public attitudes to smoking, when the doctors had been shouting for long enough that the public was broadly aware of the risks and the only question left for Government was:what should we do about it?Some believe we are now at the same point in our attitudes to sugar.Others—largely but not only representatives of the food and drink industry—say the entire debate has been skewed(歪曲) by those who spread stories deliberately to make people nervous.More or less everyone agrees that eating too much sugar is bad for you. There is also no doubt obesity is a growing problem which is putting a significant, avoidable burden on the NHS by increasing the rates of diabetes, heart disease and other longterm conditions. But to what extent is sugar—rather than saturated fats,or salt, carbohydrates or proteins,or any of the other devils of modern diets—the cause of obesity and how much should we worry about it?Yesterday, hopes of achieving anything resembling clarity(清楚) from the World Health Organisation(WHO) were confused once again, which, widely expected to reduce the recommended sugar intake by a half in new draft guidance, instead said it would continue to recommend that sugar make up no more than 10 percent of the energy we consume, while adding that cutting this to five percent would have “additional benefits”.The decision will now go out to public consultation.Simon Capewell, professor of the University of Liverpool, said that he suspected “dirty work” on the part of food and drinks companies might lie behind the WHO less than resounding message.“The food industry say Government has no business interfering(介入) in families. We must protect personal choice,”Professor Capewell said.“We say there is no personal choice. At the moment,a mother can walk into a supermarket with a choice of four tomato soups—with three,or four,or five teaspoons of sugar in them. She has a choice of thousands of ready meals—with five,or six,or even nine teaspoons of sugar in.”16.By referring to smoking the author indicates that .A.sugar has just turned out to be as harmful as smokingB.it is not easy for authorities to restrict or ban somethingC.it is easy for people to see bad effects of somethingD.people must see the disadvantages of sugar immediately17.WHO has changed its idea mainly because .A.it thinks the danger of sugar to health is overemphasizedB.it finds it safe to take in as much sugar as people do nowC.it believes certain amount of intake of sugar does us goodD.it has been put under pressure by food and drinks companies18.When reporting the argument about sugar, the author seems to .A.remain objectiveB.stand by those against itC.believe it harmlessD.hold the view of “waitandsee”19.Which of the following can be the proper title for the passage?A.Is Sugar the New Evil?B.How Much Sugar Do You Take Daily?C.Is Sugar to Be Taxed?D.How Much Do You Know About Sugar?Ⅲ. One reason Americans eat so many calories is that we tend to eat large portions.Studies find that hamburgers and fries are generally offered in serving sizes two to five times larger than the appropriate meal size.Researchers find weusually clean our plates no matter how high the y’re piled, even if we already feel satisfied.See the suggestions below to further master the fine art of sizing up(估量) your snacks and suppers.Extremely large portions are one possible reason Americans continue getting fatter even as the percentage of our total calories from fat has gone down in recent years.Fortunately, portions are relatively simple to control because it’s easier to count cookies than calories or grams of fat.Prepicture e familiar objects to picture how much you should eat of a food before you pick up your fork or spoon. For example,a half cup of lowfat granola is about the size of your fist.A half cup of lowfat ice cream equals half an orange.Use a smaller dish. This tip might sound ridiculous, but it works.First and most obv ious is that you can’t put as much food on,say,a salad plate. But psychologically, you’re just not as prone to eat as heartily and quickly if your plate will be empty in 45 seconds.Have raw vegetables at every meal.Raw cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, and peppers have few calories and lots of nutrients.A plate of them in the middle of the table almost always gets eaten up,cutting down appetite for the more caloriedense meat.Start your meal with soup.Studies show that a bowl of soup at the start of the meal reduces overall meal consumption, since they are lowest in calories and highest in nutrients.Manage your fork. After every bite of food, put your fork down.Don’t pick it up until you have thoroughly chewed and swallowed the previous bite. The goal is both to slow down your eating and to eat less.Remember:Your body needs 20 minutes of digestion before it sends signals to your brain that you are no longer hungry.

阅读理解A(文化教育)(2016·常州第一学期期末考试)In today's China, exchanges between Chinese and English-speakers are increasingly frequent.English skills are important to Chinese if China wishes to play a stronger role on the world stage. However, the general English level of the Chinese people is on the decline.China's ranking in the 2015 EF English Proficiency Index dropped 10 drops. The Middle Kingdom was ranked 47th out of 70 countries rated, and is now on_par_with several Latin American countries. The report triggered widespread discussion in China:in an increasingly international nation, why is the peoples' level of English getting worse?A decline in the English level of the Chinese people is no accident. With China's exam-based education system, worsening English is inevitable.English education in China is too focused on grammar and ignored oral practice. This results in students that are often too scared to speak, for fear of making a mistake.Exam-based courses make it so students merely learn for the test, not learn the language. In Latin America, nations do not have a rigorous exam system for English, but focus on promoting the language itself.Such programs that promote English include Chile's“English Opens Doors Program”,Panama's“Panama Bilingual Education Program”.and Mexico's “10 Million People Plan”.Brazil, which also has a government program,is ranked first in the region for English. The Chinese government should first think about how to reduce the amount of pressure on students taking exams in order to promote change in the current system of rote English education. This is the most important step.Everyone has been recently focused on overseas returnees. The number of Chinese studying abroad has rapidly multiplied in past years. At the same time, the number of overseas returnees is increasing as well. The job market is also increasingly competitive for them and it is often more difficult for returnees to find a suitable jobthan it is for domestic graduates.Difficulties and pressure in the job market for overseas returnees deters a number of Chinese from studying abroad. As a result, the number of Chinese with high-level English, carefully perfected abroad, has been reduced. This could be a major reason for why English is getting worse overall in China. While China's overall level of English has declined,it has not affected China's huge emphasis on English education and training.China remains one of the nations that is most committed to the study of English.2015年英孚英语熟练度指标报告表明,中国在2015年的英语水平排名中下降了10名,与一些拉丁美洲国家的排名相当。

阅读理解A(社会生活)(2016·福州模拟)If you are interested in the news,it means you care about what is happening in your community and the world. But sometimes news can be upsetting. If you find out about sad news and it makes you feel worried or upset, what should you do? Dr.Harold Koplewicz,President of the Child Mind Institute, has some suggestions.Sometimes, the news you watch on TV is not completely accurate. The news on TV is fast-paced.When bad news affects our nation, all of us need time to understand and process it.Your parents and your teachers can be your first sources to get information.Even someone who is as strong and powerful as President Barack Obama weeps when he's very sad. It's part of being a human that sad events make us feel sad. That doesn't mean that we need to fall_apart.It means that we just have to admit that we're sad and move forward.People respond in different ways when facing sad news. There are certain kids who are very private and don't want anyone to see how they feel. But if you feel worried, talk to your parents and teachers, which can help you feel more comfortable. If you still feel very nervous, another way to feel better is to take part in activities that are helpful to others.Go with your parents to the children's welfare institutions,or think of ways that you or your class can help others. On the other hand, remember to go to sleep at the right time, play with your friends or go to the movies. It is okay to feel sad,but it's not good to stop doing the things you usually do.

A.remain objectiveB.stand by those against itC.believe it harmlessD.hold the view of “waitandsee”19.Which of the following can be the proper title for the passage?A.Is Sugar the New Evil?B.How Much Sugar Do You Take Daily?C.Is Sugar to Be Taxed?D.How Much Do You Know About Sugar?Ⅲ. One reason Americans eat so many calories is that we tend to eat large portions.Studies find that hamburgers and fries are generally offered in serving sizes two to five times larger than the appropriate meal size.Researchers find we usually clean our plates no matter how high they’re piled, even if we already feel satisfied.See the suggestions below to further master the fine art of sizing up(估量) your snacks and suppers.Extremely large portions are one possible reason Americans continue getting fatter even as the percentage of our total calories from fat has gone down in recent years.Fortunately, portions are relatively s imple to control because it’s easier to count cookies than calories or grams of fat.Prepicture e familiar objects to picture how much you should eat of a food before you pick up your fork or spoon. For example,a half cup of lowfat granola is a bout the size of your fist.A half cup of lowfat ice cream equals half an orange.Use a smaller dish. This tip might sound ridiculous, but it works.First and most obvious is that you can’t put as much food on,say,a salad plate.
