of the thousands of editions, published in numerous countries, and dating back to the first issue in February 1922,is always a task we enjoy doing. This collection offers a wide range of different subjects. Each one we hope will inform, delight, amuse and perhaps even confound(使惊讶) our readers:from steppingi nside the French artist PierreAuguste Renoir’s inner circle of friends(‘Renoir’s Invitation To A Party’,page 90),to finding peace from depression in a solitary walkon the beach(‘The Day At The Beach’,page 110) and meeting a cat who held a family together as they began to fall apart(‘A Pretty Good Teacher,For A Cat’,page 22).My favourite article,‘Exploits Of Charles’(page 104),is written by a motherabout the increasingly odd behaviour of a little boy in her young son’s kindergarten class. What a handful this young Charles proves to be.Hispoormother!,she thinks to herself.I’m certain you’ll enjoy this amusing and relatable account of a small boy adjusting to his new classmates and teacher. With an endless supply of wonderful stories, surprising insights and experiencesto share,Reader’sDigest remains a place to find fresh perspectives—and a great read.Happy seriously. She had been teaching for a long time and I was as afraid of her as anyone, including the boys who were typically naughty in the back row.But I also had a life outside of school and had just discovered cheap objects for pranks. One such prop(道具) had two parts:an ink bottle painted to look as though it had overturned, and a piece of shiny black metal shaped like a pool.Of all the people I could have tricked, unexpectedly I chose Miss Baugh. At the beginning of the class,I opened her book and placed the props on one of thepages. Then I waited for the fun. When Miss Baugh saw the bottle and the spilledink, she let out a little cry and looked for something to wipe up the ink with. The trick had succeeded beyond my expectations. But then I suddenly knew I had no control over what would happen next. When Miss Baugh tried to remove the ink with a paper towel, she discovered it was just a piece of black metal. She picked it up,her eyes sweeping the classroom with a deadly gaze. Then came the question:“Who did this?”After some hesitation,I raised my hand.Miss Baugh fixed me with a stare that terrified me,and my classmates. And then, most unexpectedly, she laughed.“Well,it certainly fooled me!” she said. She returned the props to me,and for a few seconds a sweet little aged lady appeared right where Miss Baugh stood. We got back to having a class. But something had changed for me.I began to realize that,if someone like Miss Baugh had a warm heart beneath that crusty surface, thenother crusty people would probably do,too. That may have been the most valuable lessonI learned.4.Which words best describe Miss Baugh according to paragraph 1?A.Serious and experienced.B.Easygoing and selfless.C.Naughty and demanding.D.Scary and narrowminded.5.What does the underlined word “pranks” probably people?parisons can help to make decisions and motivate you but they can also pull you into a parison trap.Whether it’s the number of goals you’ve scored at football or how many books you’ve read,it’s easy to pare yourself to someone else.Scientists say it’s a natural behaviour that helps humans learn from each other, live happily together and achieve more.Although paring can be good for you,it’s not always helpful and you can find yourself stuck in a parison trap. This is when you always measure yourself against others and base your feelings on how well they seem to be doing.Becky GoddardHill is a child therapist (someone who helps children understand their feelings) and author of CreateYourOwnConfidence. She says that parisons can makeus feel good and bad about ourselves.“paring up” means seeing someone doing better than you and using that to inspire yourself to aim higher and tryharder. However,GoddardHill says,“Sometimes it can make you feel rubbish about yourself and knock your confidence.”“paring down” is when you see someone who seems like they’re not doing as well as you. This might make you feel you’re doing well, says GoddardHill, but it can also stop you wanting to improve. If your feelings depend on what other people are doing,“Surround yourself with cheerleaders,” suggests GoddardHill.Notice how people make you feel and spend time with friends who celebrate your strengths rather than pare themselves to you.If you follow social media accounts that make you feel you are failing in any way, unfollow them.“Find ones that make you laugh or show you lovely places instead,” shesays. Finally, focus on your own achievements and how you can improve.“The best person you can pete with is yourself,” says GoddardHill.8.How does a parison trap affect us?A.It makes us focus on our own behaviour.B.It stops us from learning from each other.C.It prevents us from living happily together.D.It bases our feelings on others’ achievements.9.What’s true about “paring up” and “paring down”?A.Both of them usually enhance our confidence.B.Both of them have advantages and disadvantages.C.The former is positive while the latter is negative.D.The former makes us feel good while the latter makes us feel bad.10.What does GoddardHill suggest?A.Aiming to be our best.B.Trying to be the best.C.Trying to be a cheerleader.D.Valuing someone else’s achievements.11.In which independence. Our expert outlines processing used cooking oil in a small DIY plant. If you’re guiding your household towards a more selfsufficient lifestyle, maybe you’d like to add doityourself fuel to your l ist of goals.Biodiesel can be created from waste vegetable oil or animal fats, which you can collect free fromrestaurants,or you can grow soybeans (大豆) to press your own oil.Process the oil with a couple of chemicals to produce homemade fuel that can run any device—including pickups, cars, and home heating systems.First, find a reliable source of raw material.Try sourcing used cooking oil from restaurants, functional food panies. If you’re planning to sell your biodiesel, begin by analyzing the available raw material supply, and make plans to size your operation accordingly.Next, build your plant, sized to your raw material supply.A small family operation can fit in the corner of a garage, within the footprint of a single parking space.Allow enough space for a water heater,a tank for storing your iningfeedstock, and a tank for washing your fuel. For starters aim to line up enough feedstock to meet your family’s fuel requirements. If you’re collecting used cooking oil from restaurants, expect that 20 percent of the material you gather will be water and bits of fried food.Water is not your friend when making biodiesel,so you’ll need to remove it by heating the oil and allowing the contaminants (污染物) to settle to the bottom before you pour the oil of the top. You’ll have to make a plan for getting rid of the oily wastewater.Home biodiesel production is not without risks.Making your own fuel will require great attention to detail and safety. Now you know the basics of how to make biodiesel, but you’ll need to research carefully before you begin production.12.Where can you get the materials of biodiesel?A.Oil plants.B.Varied restaurants.C.Abandoned garages.D.Local panies.13.What is the author’s attitude to the use of biodiesel?A.Tolerant.B.Positive.C.Unwilling.D.Opposed.14.What can we infer about biodiesel production from the last two paragraphs?A.It needs enough water.B.It goes without any risks.C.It requires little attention.D.It needs to be improved.15.What is the text mainly about?A.Some research on biodiesel.B.An experiment on biodiesel.C.The importance of biodiesel.D.One way to make biodiesel.Ⅱ.七选五(2023安徽淮南二模)Raising children is limitlessly rewarding but no doubt challenging. Here are some tips for raising a happy, healthy and responsible child.1 Studies find that kids who have Who doesn’t long for a favourite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of “tonic food”.Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil(麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as mutton and spinach(菠菜), are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radish(樱桃萝卜), are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health. The custom of tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry(枸杞), can be found on many restaurant menus, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as over-worked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of pig’s brain soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you are looking for.4.What is the present situation of tonic food?A.It is catching less attention.B.It is enjoyed by many young people.C.It is well-known worldwide.D.It is becoming increasingly popular.5.What is believed to benefit new mothers?A.Chinese cabbage.B.Fruit tea.C.Sesame oil hot pot.D.Pig’s brain soup.6.What does the underlined word “catering” mean in paragraph 3?A.Medicine.B.Restaurant.cation.D.Fashion.7.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.The Charm of Chinese CuisineB.The Popularity of Tonic FoodC.An Introduction to Chinese Tonic FoodD.Differences between Hot Food and Cold FoodC(2021·黑龙江齐齐哈尔二模)A new study looks at how pets provide important support through petting, cuddles(拥抱), and a frequent physical presence. This is especially key when people feel lonely. The researchers interviewed 32 people aged 59 to 83. Pets included dogs, cats, birds, etc. More than 90% of the people spoke about touch in the relationship with their pets. “Participants often described touch-based interactions with their pets as being comforting or relaxing in a way that contributed to their overall well-being,” the researchers say. “For our participants, comfort is the sense of being somehow cared for by another being.”Many people in the study spoke about how their pets just seemed to “know” when they weren’t feeling well and they’d move to get physically near them. Different pets were better at providing comfort, some participants insisted. Many said cats were more relaxing than dogs, while others said dogs could be relaxing as long as they were “the right kind of dog”. But almost all pets provided some sort of comfort to their owners when it came to touch.Janette Young, lecturer in health sciences at the University of South Australia, and her team uncovered an interesting thing about the pet-human relationship. People in the study often spoke about how their animals demanded to be petted or seemed to take joy in the interaction. This, in turn, made the humans feel good. The researchers suggest that pets can be “helpful in reducing touch deprivation(匮乏)” and the benefits can come from all kinds of pets. This connection can be particularly important in health care and senior care settings where patients and workers are less likely to be able to see friends and family; yet touch is important and can improve health and happiness.Pets can also offer benefits that in some cases people can’t offer. “Relationships with pets are different to those with humans,” Young says. “Animals don’t judge and are always with us.”8.About what did some participants hold different opinions?A.What pets were better at providing comfort.B.Whether pets could make them feel relaxed.C.How they felt when their pets touched them.D.When pets could notice their owners’ discomfort.9.What did Janette Young find about the pet-human relationship?A.It is full of judgments.B.It turns out temporary.C.It benefits both parties.D.It is determined by pets.10.What may researchers suggest hospitals do?A.Encourage pet connection programmes.B.Raise pets to reduce human touch.C.Select the best pet companions.D.Order workers’ friends to pay visits.11.What is the main idea of the text?A.Humans need spiritual support.B.Pet-human interactions are common.C.Lonely people like living with pets.D.Pets offer humans touch-based comfort.D(2021·山东日照一模)Looking for a place to take a rest, sip a cup of coffee and have a furry companion? Welcome to animal-themed cafes. In recent years, the combination of pets and catering has become incredibly popular in many cities throughout China. While many cafes started out offering the company of cats and dogs, others are expanding their range. Some cafes include animals like squirrels, raccoons(浣熊) and even capybaras(水豚).Many Internet users have commented that their main reason for visiting these businesses is to interact closely with animals they have only seen from afar.“The customers love animals. They are curious about these pets and want to raise one at home but circumstances don’t allow it,” said pet cafe owner Tian Rui. Liu Jing, a Beijing resident who works in finance, loves pigs, but her parents would not endorse her getting one as a pet. The 24-year-old had to admire the animals through videos and images. But now, she can have close contact with an adorable pig every weekend in a pet cafe. Also, these pet cafes serve as a shelter for those who find comfort in being around animals. “In this place, you can get close to the cute little ones in a very comfortable way without having to worry about safety and hygiene(卫生)—overall, it is an extremely comfortable experience,” said Zhao Ming from Tianjin, a frequent pet cafe visitor.Animal lovers also expect the pet cafes to change people’s attitudes towards pets. Animals like ducks, pigs and sheep have been served as food for many years. People hardly see them as pets. But the pet cafes help shift their attitude from seeing them as playthings to regarding them as family members or close friends.“Whether at home or in stores, these little animals are there for companionship and they bring warmth to our hearts. They care and understand just like family members. They give us much more than the love we give to them,” Zhao said.12.Why do people visit pet cafes?A.To pursue inner peace.B.To appreciate animal images.C.To experience a clean environment.D.To have close contact with animals.13.What does the underlined word “endorse” in paragraph 4 mean?A.Believe in.B.Approve of.C.Prevent.D.Suspect.14.We can conclude from paragraph 6 that pet cafes may.A.change our views of animalsB.teach us how to look after pets betterC.show us the importance of having petsD.remind us to value our family and friends15.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Cafes Enjoy Great PopularityB.Ideal Shelters for Lovely AnimalsC.Animals Turn into CompanionsD.Animal Lovers from Different CitiesⅡ.七选五(共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)(2021·江苏淮安高三适应性联考)If you’re looking to maximise the amount of fat burning in your next workout, think about having a coffee half an hour before you get started. 16Researchers found that 3 milligrams(毫克) of caffeine per kilogram of body weight can raise the rate of fat burning during aerobic(有氧的) exercise. 17 The coffee dose was shown to increase maximal fat oxidation rate(脂肪氧化率) by an average of 10.7 percent in the morning and 29 percent in the afternoon. The recommendation to exercise on an empty stomach in the morning to increase fat oxidation is common. 18 It is still unknown whether this increase is due to exercising in the morning or due to going without food for a longer period of time.19 Caffeine is often associated with improved athletic performance, though the science behind this link isn’t as comprehensive as it could be. In later cycling tests after the caffeine had been given, thefat-burning capability of the body was measured, showing the impact that caffeine had made on MFO. Maximum oxygen uptake was also raised, as was the intensity(强度) of exercise. The results of the study showed that acute caffeine intake 30 minutes before performing an aerobic exercise test increased MFO during exercise regardless of the time of day.20 Overall, these results suggest that a combination of acute caffeine intake and exercise at moderate intensity in the afternoon provides the best solution for individuals seeking to increase whole-body fat oxidation during aerobic exercise.A.It is based on the results gathered from 15 male volunteers.B.However, this recommendation may lack a scientific basis.C.Evidence is mounting that morning exercise is good for your health.D.A new study suggests it can make a significant difference to fat burning.E.They are clear enough to suggest that there is some kind of association there.F.Researchers have found that if cyclists take more caffeine, they will ride much faster.G.Researchers were keen to look in detail at the relationship between caffeine and exercise.50分阅读限时满分练(五)【语篇导读】本文是一篇应用文。

They bought their return tickets separately. But when they boarded the plane, they were surprised to find that they were seated right next to each other.“What a coincidence(巧合)!” you might say.Yes, coincidences happen all the time. Sometimes they are so weird (不可思议的) that there seem to be no explanations for them. That sometimes leads people to attribute them to supernatural forces. But are those really responsible?According to a new book by Professor Hand, The Improbability Principle: Why Coincidences, Miracles, and Rare Events Happen Every Day, what we think of as extremely unlikely events actually happen around us all the time, and they can all be explained by the laws of probability, reported The Washington Post.Take Hand’s experience on the plane as an example. Since there are 450 seats on that plane, it may seem like a 1 in 450 chance that he would have been seated next to his student. But the fact is that many passengers travel in pairs or other groups, and they all require adjacent (相邻的) seats, which makes solo travelers more likely to be seated next to other solo travelers. This increases the odds(几率)from 1 in 450 to a much greater chance.Another occasion on which coincidences happen frequently is the lottery(彩票). On Sept 6, 2009, for example, the Bulgarian lottery randomly selected the winning numbers 4, 15, 23, 24, 35, and four days later those numbers were chosen again.According to Hand, although the odds of two specific number draws (抽取) matching are very small, since there are many lotteries globally, the chance of any two draws matching increases with the number of draws, and it reaches a probability of greater than 50 percent by the 4,404th round.“With a large enough number of opportunities, any outrageous (不寻常的) thing is likely to happen,” writes Hand.People tend to underestimate(低估)the probability of an event because they usually focus on specific instances instead of the broader context, he added.“We should expect the unexpected,” Hand told New Scientist. “They may not be as improbable as you think.”1. By mentioning Hand’s experi ence on the flight at the beginning of the article, the author intends to ____.A. show how people usually react to coincidencesB. show that such coincidences actually happen frequentlyC. promote Hand’s newly-published book on coincidencesD. make us wonder what caused that coincidence2. What does Hand think can explain almost all coincidences?A. Supernatural forces.B. The laws of probability.C. Their broader contexts.D. The law of natural selection.3. What did Hand believe increased his chances of sitting next to his student?A. The limited seats on the plane.B. The times when they booked their return tickets.C. The fact that many of the other passengers were traveling together with others.D. The rule that solo travelers must sit in specific areas of planes.4. What can we conclude from the article?A. The author believes that there are no supernatural forces at all.B. If you bet on the same numbers each time, you will soon win the lottery.C. Failing to see the broader contexts for events makes us fail to grasp their true probabilities.D. Outrageous events wouldn’t happen if there were a large enough total number of events.BMore Fit Than EverTHIS is an excerpt (摘录) from actress and snowboarder Amy Purdy’s speech at TED (一个旨在“用思想的力量来改变世界”的全球会议):… The doctors diagnosed me with bacterial meningitis (细菌性脑膜炎). Over the course of two and a half months, I lost my spleen (脾), my kidneys (肾), the hearing in my left ear and both of my legs below the knees. When my parents wheeled me out of the hospital, I felt like I had been pieced back together like a patchwork (布片缝制物) doll ...I was absolutely physically and emotionally broken. But I knew that in order to move forward, I had to let go of the old Amy and learn to embrace the new Amy. And that is when it dawned on me, that I didn’t have to be small anymore. I could be as tall as I wanted or as short as I wanted depending on whom I was dating. And if I snowboard again, my feet aren’t going to get cold. And the best of all, I thought, I can make my feet the size of all the shoes that are on the sales rack (架子) and I did. So there were benefits here.It was at this moment that I asked myself that life-defining question: if my life were a book and I were the author, how would I want the... Four months later, I was back up on a snowboard, although things didn’t go quite as expected. At one point, I traumatized (使精神受伤) all the skiers in the cable cars when I fell and my legs, still attached to my snowboard, went skiing down twas just as shocked as everybody else and I was so discouraged. But I knew that if I could find the right pair of feet that I would be able to do this again …I started snowboarding. Then I went back to work. And then I went back to school. Then, in 2005, I co-founded a non-profit organization for youth and young adults with physical disabilities so they could get involved with action sports. From there, I got the opportunity to go to South Africa where I helped to put shoes on thousands of children’s feet so they could attend school. And just this past February, I won two back-to-back (接连的) World Cup gold medals, which made me the highest-ranked adaptive (残疾的) female snowboarder in the world.Eleven years ago, when I lost my legs, I had no idea what to expect. But if you ask me today, if I would ever want to change my situation, I would have to say no, because my legs haven’t disabled me. If anything, they’ve enabled me. They’ve forced me to rely on my imagination and to bel ieve in possibilities, and that’s why I believe that our imaginations can be used as tools for breaking through borders, because in our minds, we can do anything and we can be anything. It’s belief in those dreams and facing our fears head-on that allow us to live our lives beyond our limits.5. The underlined word “embrace” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to ____.A. keep away fromB. accept gladlyC. communicate withD. take care of6. What happened when the author went skiing not long after she was out of the hospital?A. Almost everybody there was inspired by her attempt.B. She went down the mountain so fast that she hurt herself.C. She was displeased with her performance, but she didn't lose heart.D. It turned out that she performed better than she had expected.7. What message does the author want to convey with her speech?A. Misfortune never comes alone, so be prepared.B. People without imagination can never succeed.C. It’s not what happens to you but how you react that matters.D. Life is full of ups and downs and we should learn to live with them.8. Which of the following best describes the author?A. Patient and sensitive.B. Humorous and ambitious.C. Optimistic and determined.D. Emotional and imaginative.CHow Face Show FeelingsHERE is a task for you: try to make as many kinds of facial expressions as you can. How many can you come up with?Facial expressions are like a window to your emotions inside. Scientists used to believe that we only have six basic emotions –happy, sad, fearful, angry, surprised and disgusted –and, therefore, each of our facial expressions falls into one of the six categories. But it turns out that this is just the tip of the iceberg. In a recent study, scientists from Ohio State University, US, mapped 21 different facial expressions, more than tripling (是……的三倍) the original number, reported Science Daily.Restricting emotions to just six categories is like “painting only using primary colosaid Aleix Martinez, the lead researcher. He believed that human emotions are much richer than that, which is why he and his team decided to use advanced computer technology for further investigation. In the experiment, scientists photographed 230 volunteers – 100 male and 130 female – while they made faces in response to different words such as “you smell a bad odor (气味)”. They then closely studied the images by examining key muscles on volunteers’ faces, such as the corners of the mouth or the outer edge of the eyebrow, and finally identified 21 different expressions. These included what seem to be contradictory (截然相反的) emotions such as “happily disgusted” and “sadly angry”, which scientists call “compound (混合的) emotions”.Take “happily disgusted” a s an example. Putting on a happy face is usually done by drawing up the cheeks and smiling while a disgusted face often involves a scrunched-up (皱起的) nose and eyes. So the “happily disgusted” emotion created an expression that combined the smile of happy with the scrunched-up eyes and nose of disgusted (as seen in the picture below). It was the emotion test subjects felt when something “gross (恶心的)” happened that was also funny – for example, when people spill (洒出) a lot of food on their clothes.Similarly, “happily surprised” is an expression for receiving unexpected good news. “Sadly angry” is the face we make when someone we care about makes us angry.According to Martinez, the researchers’ next step is to study the pathways and chemicals in the brain that activate (激活) and recognize those emotions. He believes that this could lead to effective treatments for people who suffer from conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD, 创伤后应激障碍), which involves a lack of recognition of other people’s emot ions.9. The underlined part “this is just the tip of the iceberg” in Paragraph 3 probably means____.A. this is a truth known to us allB. this is the total amount of somethingC. this is easily seen or discoveredD. this is only the smallest and most obvious part of something10. How does the author explain the definition of “compound emotions” in the article?A. With comparisons.B. Through examples.C. Through cause and effect analysis.D. By presenting research findings.11. According to the article, people are likely to become happily disgusted when ____.A. they receive unexpected good newsB. someone they don’t care about makes them happyC. something unpleasant but also funny happensD. they successfully escape from a dangerous situation12. What can we conclude from the article?A. There are several contradictory emotions we tend to overlook.B. Females have more contradictory emotions than males do.C. The chemicals in the brain that activate emotions are easy to identify.D. Martinez’s next goal is to find an effective cure for people who suffer from PTSD.DSOME families pass down brains and musical talent from one generation to the next. Others pass down angular (尖的) noses and strong jaw lines. Ours passes down clothing quirks. When our oldest daughter was a toddler (蹒跚学步的孩子), she had issues with socks. She’d go crazy over socks with seams (线头) across the toes.“What’s wrong with your kid?” another mother would ask.“Socks,” I would say.The mother would nod a nd say: “Corduroy (灯芯绒).”That meant she understood the sock problem because her kid had the same problem with corduroy. He probably couldn’t stand the sound it made when it rubbed together. We shared a duplex (复式公寓) with a family whose youngest daughter absolutely refused to wear long sleeves. It would be the middle of winter and she would be wearing a tank top (无袖上衣).When our son was young, he had issues with shoes. He often did a mix-and-match (混搭) thing with his tennis shoes. I figured as long as the k id could still walk, it wasn’t a matter of lifeNot too long ago, I picked up a new shirt for my husband. This is something I do every five years or so even though he claims it is completely unnecessary. It was a shirt with small black and white checks (方形图案). He wore the shirt once and said he was never wearing it again because all those checks in his peripheral vision (周边视觉) annoyed him.As for my quirk, I can’t stand button-down (领尖钉有钮扣的) shirts under pullover sweaters (套头毛衣). It’s so bad tha t when I see someone else wearing a button-down shirt under a sweater, I want to rip it off of them.So far, I have restrained(克制) myself.By the way, if your kid has issues with seams on the socks, just buy some socks without seams in them. It’s not spoiling your kid. It’s spending a couple extra dollars to keep your child from losing his or her mind.It only took me 30 years to figure that out.13. The underlined word “quirks” in the first paragraph probably means ____.A. art of matchingB. unusual habitsC. special skillsD. something recycled14. Which of the following was a problem that one of the author’s children had?A. Her oldest daughter couldn't put up with seams on her socks.B. Her son didn’t like to wear tennis shoes.C. Her youngest daughter refused to wear long sleeves, even in winter.D. Her middle child hated the sound corduroy made when it rubbed together.15. How did the author’s husband react to the new shirt the author bought for him?A. He didn't like it at all.B. He liked its style but not its color.C. He considered it too expensive.D. He said it was exactly the type he had wanted.16. Which of the following statements best describes the author?A. She is strict with her children.B. She has good taste in fashion.C. She is tolerant, thoughtful and good-natured.D. She doesn’t like to set rules for her children.Passage A1. D。

On his way home, he found his glasses were gone. When he mentally replayed his earlier actions, he realized what happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket and fallen into one of the crates. His new glasses were heading for Brazil! The Great Depression was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for those glasses that very morning.“It’s not fair,” he thought as he walked home angrily. “I’ve been very faithful in giving my time and money to my work, and now this.”Several months later, the director of the orphanage came to the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported him, so he came to my grandfather’s small church in Chicago. He began by thanking the people for their kindness in supporting the orphanage. “But most of all, ” he said, “I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year. You see, some people had just come to the orphanage, destroying everything, including my glasses. I was desperate. Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses. Along with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my coworkers and I were very worried about this. Then your crates arrived. When I removed the covers, I found a pair of glasses lying on top.”He paused long enough to let his words sink in. Then, he continued, “When I tried on the glasses, it was as though they had been made just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that!”The people listened, happy for the miraculous glasses. But they thought it was strange because there were no glasses on their list of items to be sent overseas.Sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, my grandfather, an ordinary carpenter realized his glasses had found a good place to go.41. A Japanese man died in 1986 at the age of 120 years and 237 days.Jeanne Calme nt lives in a small old people’s home in the south of France; her husband, her only child and her grandson have all died. She is nearly blind and deaf and is always in a wheelchair, but her doctor describes her as being more like a 90-year-old woman in good health than someone of 120. She still has a lively sense of humor. When asked on her 120th birthday what she expected of the future, she replied: A very short one. She also remarked that she thought the good Lord had forgotten all about her.So what is the key to a long life? According to some doctors, diet, exercise and no smoking are the three important factors. Jeanne Calment has followed two of the tips. She has always eaten a healthy diet, and she used to do exercise every day until she broke her leg at the age of 115. However, until recently she drank two glasses of strong red wine a day, and she does smoke (now only a little). Besides, Jeanne Calment might have got very good genes from her parents. Her father lived to the age of 94 and her mother to 86.A local lawyer bought her house when she was 80 under an agreement that he would pay her some money every year until her death. It must have seemed a good move at the time, but so far the lawyer has paid her at least three times the value of the house. Every year on her birthday, Jeanne Calment sends him a card saying: Sorry, I’m still alive!45. How does Jeanne Calment feel about her old age?A. She is miserable and unhappy.B. Because she has asked the lawyer to pay her more rent than they first agreed.C. Because the lawyer has paid her much more money than the value of the house.D. Because the house she sold to the lawyer is worth the money he has already paid.CAs computer games get to look more lifelike, it seems that their violence is spilling over into real life. It is reported that some dozens of children have been murdered since 1997, which has been linked to all obsession (着迷) with violent video games. Recently the parents of a 14--year-old murder victim in the UK blamed the killer's obsession with the game Manhunt, causing a government review of legislation (立法) to protect children.Psychologists think there may be many reasons why violent games are more harmful to children than violent movies. Firstly, players are actively involved in violence, and may begin to see using weapons as second nature. Secondly, violent games provide repetitive aggressive (侵犯的) experiences that are rewarded by more killing. Many studies have shown that people who play violent games regularly are more likely to show high levels of aggression. For instance, in 2000, scientists in Iowa State University found that people who played violent games were more likely to admit involvement in aggressive behaviors, including assaults (侵犯人体罪) or robberies.A study of 13 to 14-year-old children showed that more than half had played games recommended only for over18s. The more violent the games they played, the more they considered physical aggression to beacceptable. Besides, children who play violent games are more prone (有做……倾向的) to arguing with teachers and fighting.Experimental studies have also hinted at a possible link. In one, scientists asked a group of students to play a violent game, while another group played the nonviolent. Those who played the violent games were faster to react to aggressive words subsequently (随后) flashed on screen.49. We may infer from the first paragraph that .A. computer games have little to do with violence in real lifeB. Manhunt has resulted in the death of one of its playsC. lifelike computer games are forbidden in the UKD. legislation to protect children in the UK still needs improving50. Violent games are more harmful to children than violent movies because .A. violent movies are not so attractive to childrenB. the viewers can't take part in violent moviesC. violent movies are not popular with childrenD. children can win awards in violent games51. What will be probably discussed in the paragraph following the passage?A. Further research on the harm of violent games.B. Further differences between violent game and nonviolent games.C. Ways to protect children from violent games.D. The result of more experimental studies.52. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Games and MurderB. Should Computer Games become lifelike?C. Legislation, effective or not?D. Violent Games and Nonviolent GamesDSomeday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the websites you’ve visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits. In fact, it’s likely that some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a husband or wife, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a police or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you’ve never intended to be seen. Some experts tell us boundaries are hea lthy, and it’s important to reveal (暴露) yourself to your friends, family and lovers in stages, at proper times. But few boundaries could remain. The digital equipment makes it easy for strangers to know who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can even reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret. The key question is: Does that matter? When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey shows that 60 percent of them feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me.”But people often say one thing and do another. Only a tiny number of Americans change the behaviors in an effort to protect their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths (收费站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track your automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquits has run a series of tests, and these tests show that the majority of Americans will not keep personal secret just in order to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon (优惠券)But privacy does matter—at least sometimes. It’s like health: when you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it’s gone, do you wish you’d done more to protect it. So, when it comes to privacy, why do so many people say one thing and do another? And what can be done about it? 53. What would be the experts advise on the relationships between friends?A. Friends should open their hearts to each other.B. Friends should always be faithful to each other.C. There should be a distance even between friends.D. There should be fewer secrets between friends.54. The author says “we live in a world where you simply cannot keepa secret” because ______.A. modern society has finally entered a much opened societyB. people leave privacy around when using modern technologyC. there are always people who are curious about others’ affairsD. many search engines profit by selling people’s privacy55. According to Alessandro Acquits, most Americans _________.A. like to exchange their personal secret for the commercial benefitB. aren’t interested in the pitiful commercial benefit to keep their personal secretC. pay no attention to their personal secret for the commercial benefitD. can’t keep the balance between their personal secret and the commercial benefit56. The best title for the passage could be _________?A. Is Privacy As Important As HealthB. What Can Be Done to Protect the PrivacyC. Does Privacy MatterD. Does Modern Technology Reveal PrivacyESome scientists say that animals in the oceans are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.Decibels(分贝)measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect. Some scientists have proposed setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales.A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales' ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected. Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds object to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research.Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean.57. According to the passage, which of the following is increasinglydangerous to sea creatures?A. The man-made noises.B. The noises made by themselves.C. The sound of earthquakes.D. The sound of theice-breaking.58. Which of the following is discussed in the third paragraph?A. Different places with different types of noises.B. The very human ears sensitive to all types of noises.C. The ocean animals' reaction to noises.D. The same noise measured differently on land and in the ocean.59. We can know from the passage that many researchers think that thenoise limit of one hundred twenty decibels would _____.A. prevent them from doing their research workB. benefit them a lot in their research workC. do good to their healthD. increase the industrial output60. According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future?A. They will try their best to decrease noise.B. They will work hard to cut down noise pollution.C. They will study the effect of different noises.D. They will protect animals from harmful noises.。

there was nothing to do except to keep going and to hope.in the end, amelia earhart did reach ireland, and for the courage she had shown, she was warmly welcomed in england and europe. when she returned to the united states, she was honored by president hoover at a special dinner in the white house. from that time on, amelia earhart was famous. ks5uwhat was so important about her flight? amelia earhart was the first woman to fly the atlantic ocean alone, and she had set a record of fourteen hours and fifty-six minutes.in the years that followed, amelia earhart made several flights across the united states, and on each occasion she set a new record for flying time. amelia earhart made these flights to show that women had a place in aviation (航空) and that air travel was useful.9. which of the following statements is not the difficulty which amelia earhart met in her flight from north america to england?a. she was caught in a storm.b. the altimeter went out of order.c. her engine went wrong.d. she lost her direction.10. when amelia earhart saw fire coming from the engine, what did she do?a. she did nothing but pray for herself.b. she changed her direction and landed in ireland.c. she continued flying.d. she lost hope of reaching land.11. according to the passage, what was amelia earhart’s reason for making her flights?a. to set a new record for flying time.b. to be the first woman to fly around the world.c. to show that aviation was not just for men.d. to become famous in the world.12. which of the following would be the best title for the passage?a. amelia earhart—first across the atlanticb. amelia earhart—pioneer in women’s aviationc. a new record for flying timed. a dangerous flight from north america to england阅读下面短文,用完整句子答复13—15小题,并对16小题的陈述进展判定you are watching a film in which two men are having afight. they hit one another hard. at the start they only fight with their fists. but soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. and so it goes on until one of the men crashes(撞击) through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. he is dead! ks5uof course he isn't really dead. with any luck heisn't even hurt. why? because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast-moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals. they do this for a living. these men are called stuntmen. that is to say, they perform tricks.there are two sides of their work. they actually do most of the things you see on the screen. for example, they fall from a high building. however, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress(床垫). again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar!but although their work depends on tricks of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. oftena stuntman's success depends on careful timing. for example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. they often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. a norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff(悬崖) a thousand feet high. his parachute(着陆伞) failed to open, and he was killed.in spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. for nowadays there are stuntgirls too!13. please define(给…下定义) “stuntman”. ks5u______________________________________________ _____________________________14. what do you think is the most important factor of a successful performance for stuntmen?______________________________________________ _____________________________15. what can be inferred (推断出) from the author's example of the norwegian stuntman?______________________________________________ _____________________________16. please decide if these statements are true (t) or false (f).1〕most of those stunt actors do their jobs for a living. ____2〕the windows those stuntmen crash through are made of plastic. ____3〕the jobs of stuntmen are well paid and safe since there is a lot of protection for them.____4〕there are only men who are doing the stunt performance. ____语言学问点滴积累new words______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ____new phrases______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ __________new sentences______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ __________阅读1-4ccbd 5-8adcc 9-12dccb13. stuntmen are persons who perform dangerous actions and tricks with trained skills in place of an actor or actress.14. the most important factor for a successful stuntman is careful timing.25 it can be inferred from the text that sometimes an accident can occur to a stuntman.16. t f f f。

定 3分钟 Dick was a clever college student, but his family was not rich, so he had to work hard after class and during his holidays to get enough money for his studies. One summer he got a job in a butcher’s shop during the daytime, and another in a hospital at night. In the shop, he learned to cut and sell meat. He did so well that the butcher often left him to do all the things while the butcher went into a room behind the shop to do all the accounts. In the hospital, of course, Dick was told to do only the easiest jobs. He helped to lift people and carry them from one part of the hospital to another. Both in the butcher’s shop and in the hospital, Dick had to wear white clothes. One evening in the hospital, Dick had to help to carry a woman from her bed to the operation-room. The women was already frightened when she thought about the operation. When she saw Dick coming to get her, she felt even more frightened. “No! No!” she cried, “Not the butcher! I won’t let the butcher operate on me!” With these words, she fainted away.

2023届高三英语晚自习限时训练【3月30日晚,限时:不超过65-70分钟】一、阅读理解(一)Located in the tropical forests in Xishuangbanna, southwest China’s Yunnan province, the Asian Elephant Breeding and Rescue Center (AEBRC) is dedicated to giving careful and effective protection to wild elephants.Though the jungles provide rich sources of food and water for the elephants, they can also pose a threat to them if they become ill or injured, making it difficult for them to survive in the wild.In August 2015, a baby elephant that was less than one month old was abandoned by her herd at the d oorway of a farmer’s house in Simiao, Pu’er city. Vets from the AEBRC came and took the animal to their center for treatment. She was found to have intra-abdominal infections and heart failure. She was also at risk of blood poisoning. The baby elephant finally recovered after proper treatment by the keepers at the center. However, without the presence of her mother, she became malnourished (营养不良) due to a lack of breast milk. At that time, she weighed only 76 kilograms, much smaller than an average newborn elephant. The vets decided to feed her goat milk, and as she was born in the Chinese Year of the Goat, the elephant was named Yang Niu (“Yang” is Chinese for goat, and Niu means girl). The elephant is now about 6 years old, 1.8 meters tall and weighs 1.3 tonnes.Currently, there are 11 rescued Asian elephants living at the center and being cared for by 27 keepers, who spend more than 10 hours with them each day. Thanks to these efforts, the population of Asian wild elephants in the province has reached 300 from 150 over the past 30 years. The local government has designated (指派) a place as a source of food for the elephants so that they do less damage to villagers’ crops while looking for food. They’ve also monitored the elephants using technologies such as drones to keep track of their activities and prevent encounters between villagers and the elephants. The local government has also purchased commercial insurance for residents to compensate them if the elephants attack them.;1. What can be a threat to elephants’ survival according to the text?A.Lack of food sources. B.Illegal hunting.C.Physical problems. D.Destruction of forests.;2. 时文阅读限时训练四篇AOn Sept. 12, 2023, Apple made an announcement. It said it will use the USB-C connector for all its new iPhone 15 models. This is a big deal. It means that all new iPhones will have the same connector. USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. The C refers to the third type. It follows types A and B.The USB Implementers Forum is made up of over 1,000 companies. They promote and support USB technology. The group developed the USB-C connector. It replaces the older USB connectors. It also replaces other types of ports. These include HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA. The aim is to create a single, universal connector for a wide range of devices. The key features and benefits of USB-C include a reversible connector. You can insert it in either orientation. It also allows some cables to have the same connector on both ends for connecting between devices and connecting devices to chargers, unlike most earlier USB and Lightning cables.USB-C's widespread adoption in the electronics industry is likely to lead to a universal standard. This reduces the need for multiple types of cables and adapters. Also, its slim and compact shape allows manufacturers to make thinner and lighter devices.Connectors use a variety of data transfer protocols. These are sets of rules for formatting and handling data. The latest USB protocol is version 4. It provides a data transfer rate of up to 40 gigabits per second. This depends on the rating of the cable. The latest Thunderbolt, also on version 4, supports up to 40 gigabits-persecond data transfer and 100 watts charging. Why USB-C mattersDue to the fragmented nature of technology evolution, computer users a decade ago were struggling. They had too many connectors: USB for data; power cables for charging; HDMI or DisplayPort or VGA for video; and Ethernet for internet. This called for an industrywide effort to convergence on an all-purpose connector. Since itsintroduction in 2014, USB-C has gained widespread popularity. It has already become the connector of choice for most non-Apple devices. Apple converted the iPad Pro to USB-C in 2018. Now, it is doing the same for the best selling Apple device, the iPhone. Some market forecasts suggest there will be close to 4 billion USB-C connector sales by 2025 and 19 billion by 2033.1. Which organization developed the USB-C connector?A. The European Union.B. The USB Implementers Forum.C. Apple Inc.D. The USB Consortium.2. What was the goal of developing the USB-C connector by the USB Implementers Forum?A. To replace all USB connectors with USB-C.B. To promote Thunderbolt technology exclusively.C. To create a universal connector for various devices.D. To develop a connector for Apple devices.3. What is the key feature of USB-C mentioned in the text?A. It requires adapters for most devices.B. It is larger and heavier than previous connectors.C. It has a reversible connector.D. It supports only Apple devices.4. When was USB-C introduced to the market?A. 2014.B. 2023.C. 2033.D. 2018.5. According to market forecasts, how many USB-C connector sales are expected by 2033?A. 1 billion.B. 19 billion.C. 4 billion.D. 10 billion.答案: 1. B, 2. C, 3. C, 4. A, 5. BBHangzhou dishes are one of the eight great cuisines of China. They are noted for their seasonal ingredients, elaborate preparation, sophisticated cooking techniques, and refreshing taste. A trip to Hangzhou isn't complete without trying some of its speciality dishes. Here are a few must-try meals. Each of them has an age old story.Dongpo Pork (red-braised pork belly)The dish was named after a Song Dynasty (960-1279) poet and official, Su Dongpo. When Su was banished to Hangzhou, he initiated a thorough dredging of West Lake. This had great benefits for the locals. To express their gratitude, they gifted Su a lot of pork. Su added his own twist to the traditional cooking process of braised pork belly. He added yellow wine and stewed it on low heat. He distributed the dish to those who worked on the project. It became widely favored.West Lake Carp in Vinegar GravyLegend has it that two brothers surnamed Song lived in Hangzhou. The elder brother was murdered by a local villain. In desperation and fear for his safety, the younger brother was forced into exile. During his farewell dinner, his recently widowed sister-in-law cooked a dish. It was both sweet and sour. She was implying that the young Song should "not forget the salt amid the sweet". The younger brother later returned as a high ranking official, avenged his brother's murder, and sought out his sister. The dish has been handed down from generation to generation.Sister Song's Fish SoupDuring the Song Dynasty, a woman nicknamed Sister Song settled down alongside West Lake. She made a living selling fish soup. On a trip to West Lake, Emperor Gaozong tasted her fish soup and spoke very highly of it. The soup's reputation spread far and wide, and it became a calling card for the city.Sauteed Shrimps with Longjing TeaThe story of this dish relates to Emperor Qianlong. He ruled from 1644-1911. On an excursion to Hangzhou, one of his chefs accidentally dropped Longjing tea leaves into the sauteed shrimp. The lingering fragrance of the tea combined with the divine texture of the shrimp won him over. A classic Hangzhou dish was born.1. What does the word "excursion" mean in the sentence "On an excursion to Hangzhou, one of theemperor's chefs accidentally dropped Longjing tea leaves into the sauteed shrimp."?A. Experience.B. Talk.C. Trip.D. Boat.答案: 1. B, 2. B, 3. B, 4. B, 5. CCSome of the oldest known poems do not have a named author. Researchers believe this might be because early poems were sung and passed on through the sharing of stories. They were sometimes chanted or even used as prayers. Caedmon's Hymn is often considered the oldest surviving English poem. It was written in the late 7th century – more than 1,300 years ago. The first word is "nu" – which means "now". It instantly grabs the reader's attention.Fast-forward a few centuries, and poets such as William Shakespeare (1564–1616), William Blake (1757–1827) and Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861) wrote poems that captured the imagination of generations of readers. Poems during these eras usually rhymed, but not always. John Agard (born 1949) Benjamin Zephaniah (born in 1958) and Grace Nichols (born in 1950) are modern poets. They have combined their own Caribbean cultural heritage with life in Britain to write their own interesting and thought-provoking poetry about their experiences and observations. Their poetry is widely studied in schools by students across the country. Why does poetry matter?Poetry can be an important tool for self-expression. 66.5% of children found that writing poetry helped them cope with the difficulties of lockdown. A report carried out in 2020 found that poetry was the most usual way for 11 to 16-year-olds to discover writing from African and Asian cultures. This supports the organisers' belief that poetry can build understanding between cultures and people. Having a special day every year dedicated to poetry helps families, children, communities and schools share their poems and have their voices heard. It also keeps the need for poetry alive. What does "refuge" mean to you?Jay Bhadricha is one of the day's leaders. He describes refuge as a "shelter from the storm, it's an escape, it is a hug from someone you love and it is found in abundance in poetry". Some might find refuge in their family's past. They might write poetry about that, or even in the act of writing poetry itself. Others might seek refuge in their hobbies, and put pen to paper to share them. Refugees (people who have fled war and danger to make a home elsewhere) and those who have welcomed them might write about the experiences, too. The word "refuge" comes from a French word meaning "to flee". People might write about leaving something behind or rushing towards the future. The poet and author Michael Rosen wrote a poem called On the Move Again from Somewhere. It says, "Take the train. Catch a plane. Make the trip. Ina ship... home is where you find it. "1. What is suggested as a possible reason why some of the oldest known poems didn't have namedauthors?A. Authors intentionally remained anonymous.B. They were passed on through storytelling and song.C. Authors were not recognized in ancient times.D. The concept of authorship didn't exist then.2. When was "Caedmon's Hymn," often considered the oldest surviving English poem, written?A. In the 16th century.B. In the late 7th century.C. In the 18th century.D. More than 2,300 years ago.3. What does the text suggest about the role of poetry in building understanding between cultures?A. Poetry can build understanding between cultures and people.B. Poetry creates barriers between cultures.C. Poetry has no impact on cultural understanding.D. Poetry is mainly focused on promoting cultural differences.4. How does Jay Bhadricha describe the concept of "refuge" in relation to poetry?A. "A challenge, a mystery, and a distant journey."B. "A place to hide from danger, away from one's loved ones."C. "A feeling of sadness and loss."D. "Shelter from the storm, an escape, a hug from someone you love."5. What is the origin of the word "refuge," as mentioned in the text?A. It has no specific origin mentioned in the text.B. It is derived from a Latin word meaning "home."C. It comes from a French word meaning "to flee."D. It originates from an ancient Greek term.答案: 1. B, 2. B, 3. A, 4. D, 5. CDClimate Change Is Changing the Color of the OceanClimate change is reshaping the surface of the Earth — even down to the color of the oceans. A new study says that more than half the world's ocean area is "becoming greener." The trend is connected to human-caused global warming. It's not clear what is driving the greening. In some places, it could indicate changes in the amount of plankton or other organic material floating in the water. Plankton are a cornerstone of the ocean food chain. These kinds of shifts could have ripple effects throughout the entire marine ecosystem. That's a topic for future research. For now, the researchers can say for sure that the oceans are changing colors. And climate change is to blame. The study was published Wednesday in the journal Nature. It examines 20 years of satellite data. The data measures light reflected at the surface of the water all across the globe. The subtle changes aren't necessarily visible to the naked eye. The research finds that 56 percent of the world's oceans are shifting in color. And on the whole, they're growing greener. The trend is especially strong in the lower latitudes. These include the subtropics and tropics. Scientists then used a computer model. They wanted to find out whether climate change was playing a part. They ran one set of simulations. They represented the oceans under a strong climate change scenario. Then, they compared them with a second set of simulations. They imagined a world in which climate change didn't exist.Climate change seems to be the culprit. But the exact reasons still need some scientific digging. Rising ocean temperatures in and of themselves aren't driving the greening. There are plenty of other ways global warming is affecting the world. It can change the structure and flow of certain currents, for instance. These kinds of changes can affect the growth of phytoplankton and other factors that might be contributing to the greening. The findings weren't a surprise to the researchers. They're consistent with the way researchers expect the global oceans to change as the world keeps on warming. "I've been running simulations that have been telling me for years that thesechanges in ocean color are going to happen," study co-author Stephanie Dutkiewicz said. "To actually see it happening for real is not surprising, but frightening."1. According to the study, what percentage of the world's ocean area is "becoming greener"?A. Less than half.B. Around a quarter.C. Approximately two-thirds.D. More than half.2. What is not clear about the greening of the oceans?A. The impact of plankton on the marine ecosystem.B. A study in 2019 found that the possibility of terrible events like Hurricane Maria hitting Puerto Rico is now almost five times higher due to climate change. The storms were similar in many ways but had their own features. Maria was a Category (类别) 4 hurricane whose speed was up to 155 mph, while Fiona, a Category 1 storm when it landed Puerto Rico, was gentler, with winds of up to 85 mph, which later increased to 115 mph as the storm progressed through the island. And yet, the heavy rain caused by Fiona brought Puerto Rico to its knees. According to the data by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the slow moving storms brought 15.80 inches of rain over a 5-day period, slightly more than Maria at 14.72 inchesThis confirms another long-held thought that, with climate change, horrible storms will not only become more common but also wetter. That’s because the increase in temperatures is leading to more loss of water from the sea and warmer air can hold more water vapor (水蒸气). The average temperature all over the world has already increased by nearly 1.2℃ due to climate change and for each 1℃ of warming, the air’s ability to hold water is thought to increase by about 7%. The latest research suggests that the increase may be three times higher, at 21%.;4. What was a direct cause of more storms in Puerto RicoA.Loss of forests. B.Puerto Rico’s location.C.Human activity. Since then, health has become a huge part of her life. What she realized while battling this condition, though, is that a lot of people weren’t aware of what she went through on a daily basis. “Which is crazy to think about because there are so many diabetics out there,” she said. So, Sheneman came up with an art project that would offer a deep understanding of what diabetics go through. On April 1, she started her journey, a 470-mile walk, from her college town of Cincinnati, Ohio, and her plan is to make it to her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, by the end of the month.Throughout this journey, people will be able to watch her glucose(葡萄糖) levels through an app that’s connected to her glucose monitor, the Dexcom G6. The monitor provides real-time alerts when her glucose levels vary too high or low. This journey is more than just showing people how physically difficult this walk is. “I want them to understand what it looks like to be diabetic and constantly checking and making sure that you’re eating the right things,” she said, adding that “just something as simple as stress can raise your blood sugar.”Sheneman was told by health professionals to do something simple, like walking every day. However, Sheneman, who grew up backpacking, wanted to test the limits of what was possible. “I think it’s important to understand that being a diabetic is not necessarily limiting you,” she said. “There’s just the most difficult part that you have to get over.”8.

What can I do to feel better when I’m talking to other people? Do you have some ways to learn it faster? Please help me!---Roberto in BrazilA:Roberto wants to know how to become more fluent in English, and this is something you want to be able to do “fast〞.First, if you get to meet English speakers much, the important rule is to listen not just to native speakers of English, but aslo to very good users of English. If you don’t, then listen to the radio, TV or films in English. The next step is to notice what it is that speakers of English do, which makes them sound fluent. The first trick (诀窍) is to probobly have confidence. Some people think they might make mistakes. Don’t worry about that. Your listeners will usually try hard to understand you---a few grammar mistakes aren’t going to worry them. What you do need to worry about is pronunciation, especially stress (重音). When you learn a new word or expression, learn it with its stress. Notice how a native speaker says it or look it up in a dictionary.Another good thing that speakers of English do is to have a few tricks up their sleeves (袖子) for when they need to give themselves thinking time. Sometimes they use “filler sounds〞 like er, um, and so on.It is also useful to know how to bring other speakers into your conversation so that you keep them interested---and this is often done by asking questions like “What do you think?〞“How do you feel about this?〞 and so on.So, to become a fluent speaker, you’ll need to put into practice all these kinds of things. And there’s the key: practisce, practise, practise.---Susan Fearn5. Roberto wants to know how to_____A. learn EnglishB. speak English fluentlyC. talk to other peopleD. become confident6. Miss Lantelme, as I called her in my youth, worked as a librarian at the East Meadow Public Library when I was a pre-teen girl.On one occasion, in search of a book to read, I walked slowly over to the desk taken up by a librarian—Miss Lantelme. Serious, polite, and speaking with the voice of a professional(专业的) librarian, she asked what kind of book I liked to read. I thought about it for a few seconds and replied, “Mysteries(悬疑小说).” When I first learned to read, my grandfather gave me a book called The Smugglers of Sandy Bay. The title of the book is The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. For years, I waited for each new book by the recognized master of spy thrillers. Of course, I wished Miss Lantelme to hand the new mystery of John le Carré to me.All these memories flashed through my mind while I sweated my way through my work-out out of breath, giving thanks to the librarians of the world, like Miss Lantelme, who gave me a lifetime of joy, not only the stories.;4. A recent study by a group ofresearchers found that there is a link between happiness and a term that the researchers coined called “relational diversity.”Using public data from sources like the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the World Health Organization, the researchers analyzed data sets and survey responses from people who had shared their daily habits, schedules and interactions. They noticed a clear relationship between relational diversity and overall levels of satisfaction.Hanne Collins, a Harvard Business School doctoral student who co-authored the study, says that relational diversity is composed of two elements: richness and evenness. Richness measures relationship categories, or how many kinds of people you interact with in a day. That could be your romantic partner, a family member, a neighbor or a stranger. “The more relationship categories they talk to in a day and the more even their conversations are across those categories, the happier they are. And we find this in a large sample across many countries,” Collins said. Evenness relates to the distribution of conversations among those different relationship categories. Some people may find themselves interacting with colleagues at work more than, say, their family members. “If you have a few conversations with colleagues, a few with friends, a few with a romantic partner or a couple chats with strangers, that’s going to be more even across these categories,” Collins explained.Ultimately, Collins says, the study gives insight to the idea that humans are social creatures at heart. Having a support system is important, but it goes beyond your inner circle. “It’s about this mix. It’s about connecting with people who are close to you, who are maybe less close to you, who connect you with other people, who provide different kinds of support,” she said. “Essentially, the idea is that the more diverse your social portfolio, the happier you are and the higher your well-being.”;8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A.The research method.B.The supporting evidence.C.The analysis of the research data.D.The application of the research findings.;9. How does Collin explain the findings in paragraph 3?A.By illustrating concepts.B.By presenting questions.C.By using an expert’s word.D.By referring to another study.;10. What does Collins suggest people do in the last paragraph?A.Live a more active life.B.Expand the inner circle.C.Gain as much support as possible.D.Connect with all kinds of people.;11. As with many illnesses, taking steps towards prevention may be the best cure for the cold or flu. 12 You may also be able to avoid a serious illness by acting quickly at the first sign of symptoms.Wash your hands. One of the easiest and most effective measures to prevent colds and the flu is by washing your hands thoroughly and frequently. This reduces the proliferation of bacteria and the cold or flu virus from common spaces or surfaces. 13 Wash your hands carefully for 20 seconds, making sure to get under your nails, between your fingers, and thefront and back of your hands.Cover your nose and mouth. Put your hand or tissue (纸巾) over both your nose and mouth whenever you cough or sneeze. Covering sneezes and coughs lowers the risk of spreading your germs (细菌) and the viruses.1415 The cold and flu are very contagious (接触传染的) and generally spread where crowds of people gather round. Wash your hands after touching surfaces in crowded places. George Gershwin, born in 1998, was one of America’s greatest composers. He published his first song when the was eighteen years old. During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs. Many of Gershwin’s songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his songs have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way — from jazz to country. In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music. Could jazz, some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular. In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition (作曲)with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics (评论家)were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life, to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It sill remains one of his most famous works.George Gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old. Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages. People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.61. To start with, you need questions. Then,to find answers, you observe the world around you and study the facts. After that you consider possible answers and test each to find the right ones. Although today we are more accustomed to typing a few key words into a search engine and waiting for the Internet to spit the answers out for us,modern scientists and thinkers are still solving the world’s problems with this type of analysis—luckily for us.However,in the 17th century when Francis Bacon suggested that this type of thinking was the way to gain knowledge,he was going against the views of the day. At that time, people believed more in religion than in facts, and people like Galileo Galilei, who proved scientific ideas such as “the Earth is not the centre of the universe”,were often punished by the church with no one coming to their defence. The church and many people tended to ignore the facts and were unwilling to challenge what they had always comfortably believed. They preferred to make assumptions about the world based on the experience of others. In fact, when Galilei proved that the Earth was not the centre of the universe, instead of believing him, people chose to believe ancient views put forward by the great philosopher Aristotle (384~322 BC).This also shows how people didn’t want to search for their own understanding or educate themselves. And this is still often true today. People feel that if someone important and respected says that something is right, then it must be so.But even though Aristotle was a great man who inspired many great scientists and philosophers after him,he was wrong at times. And Galilei too made mistakes. He is now known as the father of astronomy but he believed that the earth moved round the sun in a perfect circle. He was wrong. Therefore our understanding of the world around us is constantly growing and changing. In other words,we learn more every day and none of us can ever sit back a nd say “We know it all.”We need to thank the great men of the past for the wisdom to know that we don’t know it all and probably never will, for that would mean a world without questions. So much of our knowledge and understanding of the world today is due to people like Bacon and Galilei, who were brave enough to step out from the shadows of old thoughts in order to find the kingdom of knowledge that today’s civilization is built upon. These men knew that knowledge and understanding are things to fight for;more vital to a man,and more beneficial to mankind, some might say, than all the money in the world.“All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered;the point is to discover them.”—Galileo Galilei (1564~1642)4.In Bacon and Galileo’s times, people would prefer to ________.A.learn new things by observing the world around themselvesB.acquire knowledge from church or experience of great ancestorsC.seek answers to their puzzles from contemporary scientistsD.explore knowledge out of facts they saw with their own eyes5.In this passage Bacon and Galileo are mentioned as examples for________.A.their great achievements in scienceB.their ambition to doubt great ancestorsC.their revolutionary way of acquiring knowledgeD.their preference to believe in themselves rather than others6.What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To help the readers learn more about great thinkers in history.B.To convince the readers of the importance of thinking and discovering.C.To persuade the readers to thank the great men of the past for their wisdom.D.To encourage the readers to go against the views of their day.7.Which of the following is the process the writer suggests to acquire knowledge?A.asking questions→ searching the Internet→ waiting for results→ finding answersB.acquiring knowledge and understanding→ asking questions→ answering questionsC.observing the world→ asking questions→ studying facts→ finding answers→ considering possibilitiesD.asking questions→observing the world→studying facts→considering possibilities→testing and finding answersBCBDA new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily,it is a bad thing for young people.Puppy love(早恋)may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression(忧郁症).The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “loss of self”.According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”,this “loss of self” is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls.Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won’t tell that to their parents.Dr Marianm Kaufman,an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing.Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early.During growing up,it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.Parents should watch for signs of depression—eating or mood changes—and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age.Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity(成熟)gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.82.What’s the main idea of the passage?A.Puppy love may bring young people depression.B.Parents shoul d forbid their children’s love.C.Romance is a two edged sword for adults.D.Romance is good for young people.83.Which of the following is more likely to have depression?A.Young people who have a strong sense of selfishness.B.Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior.C.Young girls who always hide their feelings and opinions.D.Careless parents whose children are deep in love.84.What can be inferred from the passage?A.Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly.B.Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents.C.Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression.D.The older a woman is,the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance.85.What’s the author’s attitude tow ards puppy love?A.Confused B.DisapprovingC.Disinterested D.ScaredACDBNineteen-year-old Christopher Paolini has always loved adventure books. In fact,he plotted out his first book,Eragon, when he was just fifteen! Eragon is selling more copies than most of the Harry Potter books.A reporter from Who’s News talked to this young author about his books and how he ended up being one of the best-selling authors of all time!Reporter:____________________Christopher Paolini(CP):I love fantasy.I love the sense of awe and wonder that you always get at the end of a great book or movie.Eragon was an attempt to express that. When I was about twelve, I read a book called Jeremy Thatcher,Dragon Hatcher. It’s about a young boy who went into a mysterious shop and bought a dragon egg that ends up hatching. It stuck in my head.Eragon was an attempt to see what I could do with the idea myself.Reporter:Where else do you get your ideas?CP:I’m definitely influenced by authors who have a fairly inventive use of languag e,imaginative worlds and a sense of wonder-authors who write about things that other people don’t.Reporter:What was the hardest thing about writing Eragon?CP:Probably the editing because I wasn’t used to it.It was a kind of shock doing it.But also I was having to learn a huge amount about grammar and commas and other things I’d never paid much attention to before.I’d say that editing and writing are pretty much equal in difficulty. My raw writing is a lot more professional now than it ever was before because of everything I learned through the editing process.Reporter:How do you avoid becoming frustrated with the writing process?CP:Write about what you enjoy the most or what touches you the most; otherwise you’ll never be able to survive a book-length project.Reporter:Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?CP:Before I wrote Eragon,I spent an entire month plotting out the entire story so I wasn’t writing blindly. That helps.I really poured my heart and soul into it.It’s not just an adventure st ory:it is about Eragon trying to work out who we are,why we are here and how we can live honorably.1.The reporter’s first question is most likely to be“________”.A.What’s the most interesting thing about Eragon?B.What inspired you to write Eragon?C.How has your writing improved after Eragon?D.How long did it take you to write Eragon?2.What does the underlined word“that”refer to in the third paragraph?A.A story.B.The sense of awe and wonder.C.An idea.D.A great book or movie.3.What does Paolini find as difficult as writing?A.Plotting out the story.B.Grammar and commas.C.The editing process.D.The creative use of language.4.Which of the following BEST indicates Paolini devoted himself completely to writing Eragon?A.“Write about what you enjoy the most or what touches you the most.”B.“Eragon was an attempt to see what I could do with the idea myself.”C.“I spent an entire month plotting out the entire story.”D.“I really poured my heart and soul into it.”BBCDMost Americans enjoy moving from place to place very often. In some states only one house in five has people living in it who have been there for more than five years. One may be born in one city, and go to school in another. He may finish his middle school educa tion in two or three cities and attend a college far across the country. And when he has en-tered business, he may possibly move from job to job. Moving from job to job, or jo-hopping, is a very common practice in the United States. This practice is not good by and large. Yet every chance to change a job offers the worker anopportunity to move up to a higher position and to get better wages. And job-hopping also gives employers—the bosses, the managers the—chance to benefit from the new ideas and skills that different people bring to their firms or factories. Then, most A-mericans love traveling. People often drive their automobiles 120 to 160 kilometers just to have dinner with a friend or even fly to Europe and back just for watching a football match. It is because of this—the fact that Americans are in constant motion and, in this way, it is also easy for you to become friends with Americans. And the friendship can be close and strong for a while, but then disappears as soon as the individuals move away from each other. But if these people should meet again, even years later, they would be delighted to continue the friendship. So don’t be unhappy when you fail to find lifetime friendships or relationships in the United States.1. “Job-hopping” means _______.A. moving from place to placeB. looking for workC. hoping to get a jobD. moving from job to job2. Personally, tbaauthor _______ job-hopping.A. is againstB. thinks well ofC. wants to stopD. doesn’t go along with答:1. D 2. B 3. A 4. BFor thousands of years, we have looked for ways to measure time. Early humans found that the regular movements of the sun, the earth, the moon and the stars made good ways to measure time. The rising and setting of the sun were used to distinguish day from night. But, eventually, people needed to tell time more accurately, or exactly. So, by using the sun's position in the sky, they divided the day into dawn, morning, midday and evening. Then it was noted that the sun cast a changing shadow as it moved across the sky. Time could be told more accurately by setting up a stick and making the positions of the sun's shadow. It was the ancient Greeks(古希腊人)who divided each position of this "sundial(日)" into hours. But the sun doesn't always shine. So far the past 6,000 years, many other ways of keeping time have been tried. Slow-burning candles were divided into hours, and the hourglass was invented. When all the sand in the top of an hourglass has shifted(过滤),to the bottom, an hour has passed.Later, the pendulum(钟摆), with its regular back-and-forth movement of weights, was used to move the hands on a clock pendulums are still used in grandfather clocks.Today, even more accurate clocks are in use, such as battery-operated quartz clocks, digital clocks and clocks run by electrical turning forks(音叉)and tiny atoms(原子). These atomic clocks are the most accurate clocks ever invented. The exact time can be kept to within one second a century. 49.When something is very exact, it is said to be __________.A.slow B.accurate C.fast D.of poor quality50.Humans in the old days used ________to tell day from night.A.the rising and setting of the sun B.battery-operated quartz clocksC.atomic clocks D.digital clocks51.A sundial works by __________.A.tracking the movement of the stars around the sunB.marking a shadow cast by the moving sunC.burning candle in the sunlightD.watching the stars52.Which of the following was NOT used in the past to measure time?
