The term Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”. It is the last day of the carnival(狂欢节)festivities before Lent (大斋期). The next day is Ash Wednesday(圣灰星期三), which marks the
beginning of Lent. Over time, Mardi Gras has come to represent the entire carnival period. One of the biggest celebrations takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The French where holding masked(面罩)balls and costume parties in New Orleans as early as 1718. When the Spanish government rose to power, parties were allowed. After the Spanish rule ended, people could once again attend parties and hide their identities(身份)behind masks. During the 1850s, the elegant Mardi Gras parties continued but were in contrast(对比)to wild parties going on in the streets. The celebration was in danger of not being allowed again.
In 1857, a group of men formed a secret society called the Mystick Krewe of Comus. They wanted to save Mardi Gras with proper planning and management. So they planned the first Mardi Gras parade(游行). Next, the Krewe of Rex was formed to celebrate the arrival of visiting royalty (皇宫)from Russia. Because America did not have royalty, the man in Rex created their own “king for a day” secretly choosing one of their members to be the king of the carnival. This idea quickly caught on with other Mardi Gras krewes.
Since then, many other secret societies have been set up in New Orleans. Because the krewes pay for all of the parades, Mardi Gras has been called the “Greatest Free Show on Earth.”The celebration attracts millions of visitors every year.

Many people confuse hard-working people with workaholics. What are some characteristics of workaholics? How could a person tell that he/she is a workaholic? A workaholic works long hours, at the price of personal relationships and health. When not working, they’re thinking about work. Work influences their mood: When work is going well, they’re up; when work is going less well, they’re down.
Working, or simply being busy, can be a hard habit to break. When workaholics aren’t busy working---or doing something to promote their work---they feel anxious and guilty(内疚). They hang onto jobs for dear life and do everything they can to ensure they’re important.
There is a link between health problems and workaholism. A number of studies show that workaholism has been connected with a lot of health problems, such as being anxious and heart disease.
Besides health problems, being a workaholic brings other negative effects as well. A study published in the American journal of Family Therapy found that working too much negatively influenced an employee’s marriage. There have also been studies looking at the influence of workaholic parents on their children and the news isn’t good.
However, there are also many positive aspects(方面)to working hard and to an interesting devotion to career. Hard work can bring great rewards. For many, it’s how they develop feeling of self-worth and confidence and purpose. If you have a workaholic in your life you might point out the things he or she is missing out on while at work, whether it’s a child’s soccer game, a good book, or a yoga class. Try to understand why the person feels the need to work so much and support them in finding a way out.
