But this passenger was a much different story. Magdalen is a 13-year old dog. Her owner gave her up temporarily when he was sick, but when he fully recovered several months later, he said he didn’t want her back. He had her since she was young but now had no place for her.The family who had given her a temporary home had children and other dogs and was unable to give her a forever home. When Speak St, Louis, the rescue team I work with, was contacted about the dog, they offered to take her in. She went to a vet (兽医) for a basic health check. But the vet didn’t have great news. On the trip to the trainer’s home, the sweet senior looked so relaxed in our backseat. I felt a great sense of relief and pleasure. Her owner needed some temporary help when he was sick. But I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t have wanted her back. I think of my own dog and dogs we lost to old age in the past. We’re family and we stay that way forever. She’d be able to live a good life. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding. We experience this, tiredness in two ways: as start-up fatigue (疲惫) and performance fatigue. In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it has either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel.Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first.Years ago, I was asked to write 102 essays on the great ideas of some famous authors. Applying my own rule, I determined to write them in alphabetical (按字母顺序), never letting myself leave out a tough idea. And I always started the day’s work with the difficult task of essay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works.Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle. Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that, bow ever hard we work, we fail again and again. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can - then let the unconscious take over. When planning Encyclopedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its articles. Nothing like this had ever been done before, and day after day I kept coming up with solutions, but none of them worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable. One day, mentally exhausted, I wrote down all the reasons why this problem could not be solved. I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. Relieved, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep. An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution clearly in mind. In the weeks that followed, the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind proved correct at every step. Though I worked as hard as before, I felt no fatigue. Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing.Human beings, I believe must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired.8.What does the author recommend doing to prevent start-up fatigue?A.Writing essays in strict order.B.Building up physical strength.C.Leaving out the toughest ideas.D.Dealing with the hardest task first.9.On what occasion does a person probably suffer from performance fatigue? A.Before starting a difficult task.B.When all the solutions fail.C.If the job is rather boring.D.After finding a way out.10.According to the author, the unconscious mind may help us ________ . A.ignore mental problemsB.get some nice sleepC.gain complete reliefD.find the right solution11.What could be the best title for the passage?A.Success Is Built upon FailureB.How to Handle Performance FatigueC.Getting over Fatigue: A Way to SuccessD.Fatigue: An Early Sign of Health ProblemsKite surfing is a sport that takes place on the surface of the water, on top of boards that are similar in design to wakeboards (尾波滑水板), with the surfer pulled by a kite. The popularity of kite surfing has grown, although it is rather difficult to master. Kite surfing uses the same equipment as kite boarding, but is generally given more to riding on top of waves, rather than on smaller lakes or other calm bodies of water.Early experiments in kite transportation took place through the 19th century, and at the dawn of the 20th century Samuel Cody crossed the English Channel using kites and a small boat. Kite surfing itself, however, wasn’t really born until the late 1970s. Beginning in that decade, more people became involved in using kites for personal transport and sport. Kite technology itself advanced enormously during the 1970s, with kites becoming much more controllable. The early kite surfing was rather accidental, but innovators continued to develop the technology to make it easier to control and safer. By the late 1990s, kite surfing was becoming popular off the coast of Maui, France and throughout the world. In 1997, a special kite system was built specifically for kite surfing, which helped kite surfing into the mainstream.Because of the high speeds and the dangers, it is generally recommended that would-be kite surfers take at least a few basic classes to learn the fundamentals. The main attraction of kite surfing is the potential for amazing tricks. The kite allows the surfer to experience enormous jumps, flying through the air for large distances before hitting the water in a controlled fashion. Like skateboarding, kite surfing makes use of a number of board grabs, with complex tricks possible due to the long period of time the surfer can remain in the air.12.What does the author mainly intend to tell us in Paragraph 1?A.What is kite surfing. B.Where to go kite surfing.C.How to enjoy kite surfing. D.Why people like kite surfing.13.In the 19th century, people intended to use kite for ________.A.sport B.experimentC.entertainment D.transportation14.What can we know from the third paragraph?A.Kite surfing often leads to accidents.B.Maui is home to kite surfing.C.Kite control is the key to kite surfing.D.Kite surfing came into being in the 1990s.15.What is most charming for people surfing?A.Its potential for tricks. B.Its long time in the air.C.Its speed across the water. D.Its big distance over the water.二、七选五Here’s How To Have A Calmer Sunday NightFor most people, the end of the weekend isn’t a welcome time. 16 . When I first started living alone,I found that I could go anywhere without using my voice.Sometimes,I would stop at a grocery store and buy something I didn't need just to test that I could say "thank you" to the cashier. But then I discovered something far easier—I started talking to myself.Living alone isn't the same thing as living lonely. When I'm feeling a need for communication,I reach out for it. Or I can pick up the phone to call my family or those roommates. When the time is right,I hope to live with a partner and even raise children. In the meantime,it's just me and me.4.Which of the following opinion will the author probably agree with?A.Teamwork is everything.B.Living alone can be positive.C.Living alone means loneliness.D.Teamwork deserves criticism.5.In paragraph 2,the author proves his point mainly .A.by making comparisonB.by presenting examplesC.by providing statisticsD.by quoting(引用)famous sayings6.The author sometimes bought what he didn't need .A.to test his speaking abilityB.to improve his communicative skillsC.to get rid of the annoying cashierD.to enjoy others' company when necessary7.What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?A.He doesn't feel lonely though living alone.B.He still thinks it better to live with his family.C.He can tell the difference between "alone" and "lonely".D.He sometimes communicates with his family and friends.CNothing could stop Dad.After he was put on disability for a bad back,he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey. And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin's chicken house in exchange for manure(肥料).The Smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell,Dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes(甜瓜)filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter. As the vegetables started coming in,Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew(炖菜).Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally,Dad turned off the stove, the pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dad's pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad took off the lid,the smell nearly knocked us out.Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house.Just how bad was it?The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!Determined,Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around. It didn't look that bad, andevery last drop of soup.8.What does "Nothing could stop Dad" probably indicate?A.Dad was stubborn and hot-tempered.B.Dad was difficult to get along with.C.Dad was hardworking and determined.D.Dad was unwilling to give up anything.9.Why did the neighbors come out of their houses?A.To see how delicious the stew was.B.To have a taste of the stew.C.To have a look at something interesting.D.To see whether there was something wrong.10.What does the underlined word "offend" in the last paragraph mean?A.To attractB.To upsetC.To airD.To shut11.What can we infer about Dad's stew?A.It smelt bad first but was actually quite yummy.B.It was unbearably unpleasant to both eyes and nose.C.It should have won a prize in a cooking competition.D.It entered a cooking competition, but failed to win a prize.DPatients and doctors alike have long believed in the healing(治疗)power of humor. It is claimed that humor not only affects patients' moods, but can actually help them recover faster.cells(免疫细胞).Some have even claimed to have healed themselves of serious illnesses by reading comics and watching comedies.Despite all this, many researchers are not convinced. They point out the fact that many sufferings have been known to disappear naturally, with or without a daily dose of laughter. They also say that while optimism in general does seem to be related to better health,it is hard to tell which comes first.Humor in times of stress, however, clearly makes us feel better. On one level,it takes our minds off our troubles and relaxes us.On another,it releases powerful endorphins,a chemical produced by your body that reduces pain. There are cases where the appreciation of a good joke is indeed directly related to a person's health. It can show, for example, whether a person has suffered damage to one particular area of the brain: the right frontal lobe (额叶).Scientists confirmed this by having people read jokes and asking them to choose the funniest endings from a list. Subjects with normal brains usually chose endings that were based on a relatively complex synthesis(综合)of ideas. Subjects with specifically located brain damage, however, responded only to slapstick(闹剧)endings, which did not depend on a particular context. When pressed, the brain-damaged subjects saw the logic in the correct endings. They simply did not find them funny.Of course, humor is largely an individual matter.Next time your friend does not get one of your jokes, there is no need to accuse him of being a lame-brain(脑残).However,you might suggest that he lighten up-for the health of it.12.What does the underlined "this" in the second paragraph refer to?A.The fact that happy patients' have more immune cells.B.The fact that patients and doctors believe in humorous patients.C.The fact that humor helps improve patients' moods and recovery.D.The fact that comedies and comics help cure patients of their diseases.13.How does humor help reduce our stress?A.By providing us with optimism and courage.B.By helping reduce the number of immune cells.C.By making us laugh out loud to forget our troubles.D.By distracting(分散)our attention and releasing pain-reducing chemicals.14.What can the experiment in the sixth paragraph confirm?A.The relationship between good jokes and people's health.B.The connection between beginnings and endings.C.The relationship between complex ideas and brains.D.The connection between jokes and brain damage.15.Which would be the best title for the passage?A.Humor contributes to good health.B.Which comes first, humor or health?C.People need humor in times of stress.D.Humor can cure different illnesses.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

I have forgotten the name of the old lady to whom I delivered newspapers but I can’t forget the lesson she taught me in forgiveness .On a winter afternoon, a friend and I were throwing stones onto the roof of the old lady’s house . I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and threw it out. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight not for the roof but for a small window of the house. At the sound of broken glass, we knew we were in trouble. We turned and ran away fast. I was too scared about getting caught that first night by the old lady with the broken window. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn’t been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her misfortune. She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer able to act comfortable in her presence. I made up my mind that I wouldsave my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the seven dollars that I thought would cover the cost of her window.I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost for repairing it.I waited until dark, and put the letter I didn’t sign in her letter box.The next day, I handed the old lady her paper and was able to return the warm smile that I was receiving from her.She thanked me for the paper and gave me a bag of cookies she had made herself.I thanked her and ate the cookies happily. After several cookies, I felt an envelope and pulled it out of the bag. When I opened the envelope, I was stunned. Inside were the seven dollars and a short note that said, “I’m proud of you.”5.What happened when the author broke the old lady’s window?A.He was caught red-handed. B.He thought he was not discovered. C.He left seven dollars right now. D.He reported to the police at once. 6.What is true according to the passage?A.The author borrowed seven dollars to give to the old lady.B.The author felt quite all right after the accident .C.The old lady had already discovered who broke her window.D.The old lady kept the money given by the boy.7.We may know from the passage that the old lady was_____.A.critical B.suspicious C.generous D.gentle8.The author wrote the passage to_____.A.tell the readers the life story of a nice old ladyB.tell the readers a lesson he remembered for 43 yearsC.talk about his paper-delivery adventureD.talk about a young boy’s interesting storyI remember that it was a fall morning when the orchestra (管弦乐队) teachers came into Miss Newell’s third-grade classroom. “You have hands for the viola (中提琴),” Miss Ciano told me. I was excited because my hands were finally good for something. I told my parents I wanted to play, and naturally, they agreed.Since I first touched the viola, I haven’t been able to put it down. Ignoring the difficulty, I am pulled closer to it each day.Classical music is truly my best friend. It is the trusted friend of every man, woman and child. Various feelings are expressed in classical music. I discovered that when I was eleven and played a cello concerto (大提琴协奏曲) of Bach in a competition, the first movement was joyful, but the second movement was mysterious and full of pain. From the piece, I learned that music expresses not only feelings, but also sudden mood changes. By listening to classical music, I know that someone else shares these feelings. Since I am lucky enough to be able to play classical music, I am comforted by it when I am upset. It gives me a way to escape from my problems for a short period. Classical music can express my joy, sadness and anger. Now look back at that fall day in the third grade and think how gullible I was for believing that anyone, even music teachers, could tell whether hands were perfect for a certain instrument. I’m certain they told me I had “ viola hands” not because they were fortune-tellers (算命师), but because there was a lack of violists in our district. Classical music is one of the best things that ever happened to mankind. If you get introduced to it in the right way, it will become your friend for life. 9.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first and second paragraphs? A.To introduce an interesting musical class.B.To offer the evidence of her gift for music.C.To show the importance of proper guide.D.To tell the power of support from parents.10.According to the passage, in what way does classical music help the author? A.By developing social skills. B.By improving mental health.C.By broadening life experience. D.By building close relationship. 11.What does the underlined word “gullible” mean in the last paragraph? A.Easily tricked. B.Firmly loved.C.Greatly challenged. D.Secretly hidden.12.Which could be the best title for the passage?A.Special event, sweet memory. B.Classical music, endless friendship C.Lifetime dream, great effort. D.Happy childhood, unforgotten experience.Every year, thousands of people gather in Spain’s northeastern city of Pamplona for the opportunity to run for their lives as six fighting bulls are set free to charge through the town. But the event is of interest not just to adventurous tourists. Daniel Parisi and his team realized that the Pamplona bull runs offered a perfect natural experiment to study the activities of frightened crowds. That is a useful topic to explore. Architects, civil engineers and urban planners must try to work out how people will behave in the event of a disaster so they can design their creations to avoid potentially deadly crushes. Unfortunately, reliable information is hard to come by. Authorities, after all, are likely to frown on researchers putting volunteers into serious danger simply to study how they might behave. In July 2022, the researchers set up two cameras on the rooftops and recorded the runners’ behaviors as the animals were charging through the town. Then they brought their recordings back to the lab to calculate the speeds of the runners, the density of the crowd and the probability of a runner tripping and falling. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the researchers found that runners picked up speed when the bulls drew near. Less expected was the finding that the speed of individual runners increased with the density of the crowd. At the crowd’s maximum speed of around four metres per second, density reached roughly one runner per square metre. This finding is contrary to a long-held assumption that people will slow their pace as group density goes up. Their data further suggests that, in the heat of the moment, people pay little attention to the danger of running into each other, and do not slow down.Their conclusion? The only option for the urban designers is to plan wider stairs, tunnels, bridges and other passages in the future.13.What attracted Daniel Parisi to Pamplona?A.The beauty of the small Spanish city. B.The behaviors of frightened crowds. C.The unique traditions of the festival. D.The adventurous spirit of the event.14.What does the underlined phrase “frown on” in paragraph 3 most probably mean? A.Disapprove. B.Encourage. C.Fund. D.Permit. 15.What surprised Daniel Parisi?A.The crowds moved faster as the bulls came near.B.The fastest runner’s speed reached 4m per second.C.The runners picked up speed as group density went up.D.Some people stopped to help others in the face of danger.16.What is the best title for the text?A.In Pamplona, Wild Tourists Behave BadlyB.In Pamplona, Bulls Run and Tourism GrowsC.Researchers Survived the Bull Run in PamplonaD.Pamplona Bull Run Shows How Crowds Behave二、七选五How to Train Your Brain to Show KindnessIt is always good to learn new things, especially kindness. 17 , here are some ways for you.Show kindness to yourself firstYou might think that the first step should be helping others, but that won’t make a lasting change. If so, you may have admired their beautiful colors and sweet songs. But do you know these feathered friends can actually do more than that?A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports finds that exposure to birds, either in the home or outdoors, can boost people’s moods.Researchers at King’s College London used a smartphone app built by the school’s Urban Mind project to collect the real-time feelings of study participants upon seeing or hearing a bird. A total of 1,292 people living in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States participated in the study which was conducted between April 2018 and October 2021.The app asked participants three times a day whether they could see or hear a bird followed by a series of questions on their mental well-being. Participants were also asked questions about whether they could see trees, plants or hear any water to see if people were experiencing better mental well-being due to being in or seeing nature, and not just because of exposure to birds.According to the study, the mental well-being of study participants with and without depression was significantly improved after seeing a bird or hearing birdsong compared to not seeing or hearing a bird. There is a growing number of studies that link spending time outdoors (either in green leafy places or next to bodies of water) to improved mental health. But there are few studies that look at how different aspects of nature can play into humans’ me ntal well-being.And while the study adds to the small pile of research on birds and mental health, the report marks the first time researchers have studied the responses to birds and mental well-being in real-time, according to Ryan Hammoud, lead author of the study.“They kind of examine nature as a single object when nature includes many different characteristics and features like trees, plants, water, birds,” said Hammoud, “We choose to focus on bird life to try and understand which specific characteristics of nature benefit mental well-being.”12.What is the purpose of paragraph 1?A.To introduce a phenomenon. B.To bring in the topic.C.To ask an interesting question. D.To provide background information. 13.How did the researchers conduct the study?A.By analyzing previous studies. B.By observing the behavior of birds.C.By gathering feelings of participants. D.By studying people’s effect on birds. 14.What does Hammoud think of the new study?A.Pioneering. B.Interesting. C.Conventional. D.Practical. 15.What is the main idea of the text?A.Bird watching has become a popular hobby.B.Exposure to birds can improve mental well-being.C.Nature is the best medicine for mental health issues.D.Spending time outdoors can impact mental health positively.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

海南省高一下学期期末考试英语试卷(附参考答案与解析)(满分:150分;考试时间:120分钟)学校:___________班级:___________姓名:___________考号:___________一、阅读理解We have recently heard some interesting ways that 5G wireless technology might change our lives in the future. One project in Britain is testing this superfast technology, but not on humans. Instead, the experiment involves an unlikely group of Internet users—cows. The system connects the animals to 5G in an effort to automate the milking process. The project was developed by American technology company Cisco Systems. It is part of a Cisco-led program called 5G Rural First. Cisco says the program seeks to explore the future of 5G connectivity in rural communities around the world. Rural areas are expected to be the last to receive 5G service.Testing areas were set up on farms in three rural areas of England. The cows are equipped with 5G-connected devices that link up to a robotic milking system. The system uses sensors and machine learning to fully automate the process, System designers say the technology takes over after a cow feels ready to be milked and walks toward an automatic gate. The device is designed to recognize each individual cow. It then positions equipment to the right body position for milking. During the process, machines release food for the cow as a reward. One of the test areas is in the town of Shepton Mallet, in southwest England. There about 50 of the farm’s 180 cows are fitted with 5G smart collars and health-observing ear sensors. Project officials say the devices do not harm the cows and the sensors permit farmers to immediately identify any problem or health concerns.Other technology tools powering the 5G smart farms include automated brushes that work automatically when the cow rubs up against them. Sensors also control the amount of light to the cows’ living areas depending on the weather. And, an automatic feeding system makes sure the animals always get enough to eat.Nick Chrissos works on the project for Cisco. He said the system could connectevery cow and every other animal on the whole farm. “That’s what 5G can do for farming—really release the power that we have within this farm, everywhere around the United Kingdom, and everywhere around the world.”1.Why was the program developed?A.To produce more milk. B.To care for cows better.C.To try out 5G in rural areas. D.To improve 5G system on farms. 2.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A.The way 5G system controls the milking process.B.The way 5G system is set up on the farms.C.The reason why 5G is used on the cows.D.The reason why 5G is popular with the farms.3.Which paragraph talks about extra technology applications on the 5G farm? A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 2.C.Paragraph 4. D.Paragraph 5.4.What may be the best title for the text?A.5G Is Used Widely on the Cows of British FarmsB.5G Has Reached Rural Areas of the United KingdomC.British Cows Connected to 5G Can Control Their Own MilkingD.Farmers in British Are Using 5G to Improve Their LifeIn addition to the official basketball world, various other types of basketball are practiced around the world.Wheelchair BasketballWheelchair basketball was invented in 1946 by former American basketball players, who, after wartime injury, wanted once again to experience the excitement of a highly athletic sport within a team environment. It is now played in more than 80 countries by over 25,000 men, women and children with a physical disability which prevents them from playing competitive basketball on their feet.http://****Beach BasketballBeach basketball is an exciting, non-stop action game played in the sand. The game was born more than forty years ago on the physical education fields of Gulf Shores School. This kind of basketball, invented by Philip Bryant, has grown from an extremely effective skill improvement game to a very popular, widespread competitive sport.http://****beachbasketball****Street BasketballStreet Basketball or streetball is mainly played as a leisure game, but streetball players can also compete against each other. There are no specific streetball rules and the game is played outdoors; the players make up their own rules to play. Streetball is very popular among younger players and allows players to publicly show their own individual skills.http://****streetball****Deaf BasketballBasketball for the deaf (unable to hear in one or both ears) men and women has been played since the early 1920s. The game today has exactly the same rules as FIBA (International Basketball Federation).http://****Bankshot BasketballBankshot is a new game of skill and challenge that is often described as “mini golf, but with a basketball.” Bankshot is the only sports system that allows the able-bodied and athletes with a disability to play together at the same time. B.Disabled players can play in two of the five types of basketball. C.Wheelchair basketball was invented by Philip Bryant.D.Streetball rules are very strict.Humans have always assumed that there is a huge gulf between animal behavior and human development. However, recent research into animals shows that animals are continuously designing innovative methods to finish their tasks. Examining the nature and results of their creativity can help us understand evolution.Research shows that animals can also be creative. By inventing new behavioral patterns and adjusting their behavior to new contexts, as well as to changes in social and ecological environments, researchers show that animal innovation can also be diverse. For instance, chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use tools such as sharp spines and stalks to remove the hearts of palm vegetables from trees. Herring gulls (鸥) find out quite a cruel way of killing rabbits-drowning them in the sea.Innovative species tend to survive when they enter new places, but novel behavior cannot be recognized unless “normal” behavior is studied. Researchers can now count and document the innovations that have been created by species, which would help them to quantify their creativity. Studies also show us that all animals are not equally inventive, with primates (灵长类) tending to be more innovative due to their bigger brains. The greatest scientific significance has been the innovation shown by animals such as apes, capuchins and macaques among primates. These species of primatespossess the biggest brains compared to their body sizes. They are also heavy tool users. Their broad diets and complex forms of learning are also insightful. They show an evolutionary strategy that gives them new solutions to life’s challenges. However, even if these animals show innovativeness, they do not have the ability to im- prove upon the solutions of others. Unless they share information accurately and copy each others’ inventions, their creative inventions are likely to disappear before they can be innovated further. This ability can be managed only by humans, for we are able to build on shared knowledge.8.What does the underlined word “gulf” in the first paragraph mean? A.Difference. B.Conflict. C.Balance. B.A book review. C.A short story. D.A science report.Every year, as many as 50, 000 elephants in Africa are killed illegally for their tusks (象牙). Now scientists have improved DNA methods that allow them to match up elephant tusks, and help track down criminals that are selling them.Even though it’s against the law, African elephants have long been killed by criminals for their tusks. Other people, called “traffickers”, buy the tusks and transport them out of the country on a ship. The traffickers re-sell the tusks for even more money, usually in Asia. Elephant tusks can sell for about $1, 000 a kilogram. In the past, it was hard to catch the criminals. Usually by the time the dead animals were found, the illegal hunters had been far away. And when traffickers were caught with elephant tusks, it was impossible to say where the tusks came from. Traffickers usually hide them in tricky ways inside shipments of other products. That means that only about 10% of tusks from illegally killed elephants are ever found.Several years ago, scientists led by Dr. Samuel Wasser figured out a new way to solve the problem. Using elephant waste, they built a list of the DNA of almost all elephants in Africa. Now when elephant tusks are found on a ship in another country, DNA tests can show where they came from. This information can trigger quick action in the country where the animals were killed. It can also help the police discover patterns in the ways the illegal hunters and traffickers work.Dr. Wasser is hopeful that the method of using DNA information from elephants to track illegally killed wildlife will soon be adopted to help protect other kinds of animals and break up more criminal groups.12.Why do scientists use DNA information from elephants?A.To improve the health of elephant tusks.B.To keep track of the illegal dealers.C.To protect elephants against natural disasters.D.To research into elephants’ habits.13.What may make illegally hunted elephant tusks hard to find?A.The way they are transported.B.The lack of tracking technology.C.The difficulty in catching criminals.D.The various tricks of illegal hunters.14.What does the underlined word “trigger” in paragraph 5 probably mean? A.start with B.result from C.hold back D.lead to 15.Which of the following reflects Dr. Wasser’s opinion about the DNA method? A.It can make all criminals have nowhere to hide.B.It can scare away potential illegal hunters.C.It can be widely used in wildlife protection.D.It can make elephant tusk sales unprofitable.二、七选五Pocket calendars are information planners that fit neatly into breast pocketto easily carry the calendar in a jacket pocket, a purse, or a computer bag or a briefcase without taking up much room. The typical pocket calendar includes pages that are very similar to a wall calendar. 17 It also includes enough space to allow the user to write in notes on each date. Some calendars of this type will cover a total or fourteen months. Many pocket calendars also serve as a day planner, and include other pages to record in-formation such as phone numbers, and email addresses. These handy pocket planners and calendars keep a great deal of information in a small binding(装订). 18However, the arrival of digital technology has cut into the market for pocket calendars somewhat. All the same functions can be handled with calendar and planner software that are included in handheld devices such as cellular phones, and in software included on laptop computers. 19 So this makes them more attractive to people with busy lives.20 Card and stationary shops still routinely carry several different brands and models of the pocket calendar. The diversity in materials used to create various brands of the pocket calendar makes it possible to purchase inexpensive types that are functional, or more elaborate and costly versions.A.A full month will be laid out on one or two pages.B.This allows us to make room for what’s important.C.There are countless applications for a Web calendar.D.In appearance, a pocket calendar resembles a basic checkbook.E.The pocket calendar still has no danger of disappearing any time soon.F.This makes it easy to pull them out and enter new information when needed.G.These modern electronic options can hold more information than a pocket calendar.三、完形填空“I couldn't survive without music,” says fifteen-year-old Steve. The park itself covers an area of around 2,850 square kilometers, making it the sixth largest park of its kind in the country. I recently visited Tarangire to see what it was like….One of the first sightings upon entering the park which I found was a huge herd(群)of elephants. Our guide told us that Tagrangire was probably the best place in Tanzania to find large herds of elephants, and that their population in the park was around 2,500. We continued to watch the elephants as they stood under trees and scratched themselves against the trees to hit the spot of an itch(痒处).To the right of the elephant herd, we noticed a big tree! Our guide informed us that this was a Baobab tree and that they could live for hundreds of years. Compared with this tree, the elephant just looked like dwarfs(侏儒)! We were informed that Tarangire was one of the best National Parks in Africa to see so many Baobab trees. As we continued our drive through the park, we finally reached a watering hole. Our guide warned us that there were lions all around us. It took us all a while to find them, but there they were! Most of them are resting in the shade under brushes, but there was one that was drinking from the watering hole directly in front of us. We then noticed just to our right, therewere a couple of fresh zebra corpses(尸体)— it seemed as if the lions which were resting had killed them! We were unlucky not to have seen the actual kill, as our guide had mentioned that the zebra corpses were fresh and the kill had occurred within the last hour. Our final big sighting was one that none of us were expecting to see, even our guide! We pulled over to where there was a large gathering of cars, with a sleeping leopard(美洲豹)there! We took photos happily and excitedly and observed its surprising body before returning to our hotel as it was getting late. So, I hope you enjoyed my description of Tarangire, and that I have inspired you to add this amazing park to your very own Tanzania travel route.56. Sian Beilock, a psychology professor at the University of Chicago, has studied these highly anxious exam-takers.“They start worrying about the results. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources that you could otherwise be using to focus on the exam,” says Sian Beilock. The researchers tested the idea on a group of 20 anxious college students. They gave them two short math exams. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the coming second exam. The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second exam would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort.Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 20% worse on the second exam. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%.Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the exam.Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who wrote about their feelings got an average grade of B+, compared with a B-for those who did not.But what can they do if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam orpresentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and they can still improve their performance.61. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.CPR is cardiopulmonary resuscitation (心肺复苏). It forces air into the lungs and pumps(用泵抽) blood and oxygen to the brain in order to increase the chances that a person whose heart stopswill survive. It increases the chances that he or she will suffer little or no brain damage. The American Heart Association suggests two ways to perform CPR. One combines the use of hands to pump the victim’s chest(胸腔)with rescue breathing. The other method is called “Hands-Only CPR”, which is for people who are unwilling or unable to perform rescue breathing. Some people fear infection(感染). Others say they are afraid of making the patient worse. But the American Heart Association strongly asks people in contact with a victim(受害者) to take action and tells how to take it. It says you can recognize a person needing CPR. He or she is unconscious(无意识) -- unable to communicate or react to surroundings or speech. His or her skin has lost color. The person is not breathing. If such conditions describe the situation, chances are the heart has stopped beating. You should act by calling for help, or sending someone else. Even if you cannot do mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing, you can perform Hands-Only CPR. You can do chest compressions(压迫) that help to keep blood flowing to the brain and the heart. To perform the compressions, place one hand over the other and press firmly on the center of the victim’s chest. Push down about five centimeters. Aim for one hundred compressions each minute.Doctor Sayre suggests that medical workers do both the breathing method and chest compressions as usual. He says some victims, including babies, need the mouth-to-mouth breathing with the compressions. Still, the doctor says it is better to do just chest compressions than to do nothing.Title: CPR71____________To increase the chances of survivalTypes of CPR•The use of hands to pump the victim’s chest with 72. ____________.•73. ________________.Who to perform “Hands-Only C PR”People ---• unwilling or unable to perform CPR•74. ____________• afraid of making the patient worseWho to receive CPRPeople ---• 75. ____________• 76._____________ or react to surroundings or speech• pale in pale• unable to breathe77. _________ CPR• Place one hand on the other• Press firmly on the center of 78. _________•79. ____________ about 5 centimeters• Perform 100 compressions each minuteDr. Sayre’s suggestions•In usual cases:the breathing method and chest compressions.•In some cases (babies related):80. ____________.Section B(10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage.
