Each piece is written for a French province with a title of bird chosen for each region. Messiaen uses the "colour of tones" at its most powerful, where different sounds interconnect and lay the birdsong among the nature most beautifully. The Cat and the Mouse by Aaron CoplandWe can hear so vividly different plots and the tune is easily accessible to all listeners. Copland uses the pace and rhythm successfully, which creates the animation in the music. Lots of loud and dissonant (刺耳的)chord is fully applied in the entire piece, giving the” storytelling“ nature to the music. The Maid and the Nightingale by Enrique GranadosIn the music, the maid sings a mournful song to the nightingale as her lover has gone to fight another guy out of jealousy, and eventually dies. After her mournful "song" ends, the last part of the piece is pure bird sound. Granados mainly uses quick and light single notes to paint the melodies of birdsongs.Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-SansThe Carnival of the Animals is the most famous work from Saint-Sans. The different musical techniques and the fast and light rhythm of the full suite truly make this set of works the most typical music for animals.21.What characteristic do The Cat and the Mouse and Carnival of the Animals share? Just one kilometer of road would need three million masks, and the polypropylene (聚丙烯) plastic used to make single-use surgical face masks also increased the flexibility and durability of the road. The new material is a mixture of about 2% torn masks, with recycled concrete aggregate (RCA)—a material obtained from waste concrete and other minerals from destroyed buildings. This recycled material was found in the study to be ideal for two of the four layers generally required to create roadways. Paving a kilometer of two-way road with the RCA and three million face masks would result in a change of 93 tons of waste from landfills. The final product then is more resistant to wear than asphalt (沥青), as well as being cheaper too, provided there was a method for collecting masks. The research team did a cost-analysis and found that, at $26 per ton, the RCA was about half the cost of mining raw materials, and as much as a third of the cost of shipping the used masks to a landfill. The widespread application would be ideal for large infrastructure (基础设施) projects. For example, Washington has the 11th worst roads in terms of unaddressed repairs in the U.S. If the damaged roads in Washington state were repaired with the RCA/mask mixture, it would reuse nearly 10 billion masks, sparing American landfills hundreds of millions of tons of trash. It’s said that the team is looking for private industry partners or governments willing to give their plastic mask road an opportunity for a large-scale test.24. What does the underlined word “discarded” mean in par agraph 2?A. Recycled.B. Produced.C. Mixed.D. Abandoned.25. What is the new material used to pave ways made of?A. 2% torn masks, concrete and tons of trash.B. Polypropylene plastic and building materials.C. Single-use surgical masks and recycled concrete aggregate.D. Waste concrete and other minerals from destroyed buildings.26. Why are numbers mentioned in paragraph 5?A To tell us what the team has found.B. To prove this material is cost-effective in paving roads.C. To explain repairing roads costs a lot of materials.D. To praise the hard work the team has done.27. What can we learn from the text? A. The material used to pave roads is made of masks.B. Generally speaking, it requires two layers to create roadways.C. It remains to be tested whether the solution is practical.D. The damaged roads in Washington were repaired with the RCA.四.语篇填空【1.5*10=15分】Sanxingdui Site, dating back to 3,000 to 4,000 years ago, was first discovered in 1929. However, the increased tourism has also brought negative effects to the islands. One major concern is the introduction of invasive species. Some tourists may bring plants, animals, or microorganisms from other places, and these organisms can threaten the native species in the Galápagos. For example, the blackberry, a plant from mainland South America, is now invading parts of the islands and harming the native plants.Tourists also have the potential to disturb the wildlife. When people go too close to animals or try to touch them, it can cause them to feel stressed or fearful. Additionally, excessive noise or pollution from tourist activities can interrupt their natural behaviors and habitats. To minimize these negative effects, tour operators are being encouraged to follow strict guidelines and regulations. This includes educating tourists about the importance of respecting the natural environment and wildlife, providing clear instructions on how to interact with animals, and using environmentally friendly practices.According to the passage, what is one major concern of increased tourism in the Galápagos Islands?A. The disturbance of native wildlife.B. The lack of regulations for tour operators.C. The destruction of the natural environment.D. The decrease in the number of tourist visits.答案:A三、完形填空题A man was walking along a road when he found a cocoon (茧). He took it home thinking that one day a butterfly would 1 from it. But his curiosity was difficult to control and this new computer really puzzled him.It was a strange-looking machine —one his dad had brought home from the laboratory where he w orked. “It’s an experimental model,” his father had explained, so don’t touch it under any circumstances.” But his father’s warning only served to make Mark more curious. Without any further thought, Mark turned on the power switch. The computer burst into life and seconds later, the screen turned into colours, shifting and changing, and then two big white words appeared in the centre of thescreen: “SPACE TRANSPORTER.”“Yes!” Mark cried excitedly, “It’s a computer game. Some of the world’s leading cities are facing disasters like floods and heat waves.LondonLondon’s flood defences are getting older. Since 1982, the Thames Barrier(水闸)has protected the city from the threat of flooding, but it was only designed to last until 2030 and close once every two or three years. About 26 years later the barrier now closes five or six times a year and according to Environment Agency predictions, by 2050 the barrier will be closed on almost every tide if the problem is not addressed. There are 26 underground stations, 400 schools, 16 hospitals, an airport and 80 billion worth of property in London’s flood risk area, so large scale flooding would be disastrous.ParisOver a six week period in July and August 2003, more than 1 1,400—mainly elderly people—died in France from dehydration(脱水)and extremely high body temperature in a deadly heat wave. Heat waves of similar intensity(强度)are expected every seven years by 2050, so what can be done to make sure such a disaster does not happen again? One solution is to have air-conditioners installed in elderly care homes. But this is considered a short-term solution, as the increase in demand for electricity also increases carbon emissions(排放).In Paris the local authorities are encouraging architects to design new types of buildings such as the building “Flower Tower,” which uses a covering of bamboo to act as a natural air-conditioner.ShanghaiShanghai is the fastest growing city on Earth. It has a population of 18 million and is only 4 meters above sea level. Sea levels are predicted to rise by 20 cm within the next century. An estimated 250,000 people move to Shanghai every year in search of work, placing extra demands on energy consumption. China relies heavily on coal—fired power stations, but these emissions increase temperatures and, in turn, warmer seas increase the risk of typhoons.31.What problem should be settled now in London?A.How to protect the city’s propertyB.Where to build its flood defencesC.How to use the Thames Barrier to protect the cityD.How to improve the function of the old flood defences32.Which of the following measures can’t solve the heat wave disaster in Paris?A.Putting up new types of buildings with a covering of bambooB.Having air-conditioners installed in elderly care homesC.Forbidding the city to build“Flower Tower”D.Encouraging architects to design new types of buildings33.The major threats to Shanghai are .A.increasing population and coal-fired power stationsB.rising sea levels and typhoonsC.extremely high temperature and rising sea levelsD.extra demands on energy consumption and typhoons34.The purpose of the passage is .A.to tell us how to protect the big citiesB.to give advice on how to defend natural disastersC.to explain what causes flood and heat wavesD.to warn us of the increasing natural disasters in big cities35.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.Big Cities Facing Big Disasters B.Big Disasters in the FutureC.The Increase of Natural Disasters D.Solutions to Natural DisastersCCan people change their skin color without suffering like pop king Michael Jackson? Perhaps yes. Scientists have found the gene that determines skin color. The gene comes in two versions, one of which is found in 99 per cent of Europeans. The other is found in 93 to 100 per cent of Africans, researchers at Pennsylvania State University report in the latest issue of Science.Scientists have changed the color of a dark-striped zebrafish(斑马鱼)to uniform gold by inserting a version of the pigment (色素) gene into a young fish. As with humans, zebrafish skin color is determined by pigment cells, which contain melanin (黑色素). The number, size and darkness of melanin per pigment cell determine skin color. It appears that, like the golden zebrafish, light-skinned Europeans also have a mutation (变异) in the gene for melanin production. This results in less pigmented skin. However, Keith Cheng, leader of the research team, points out that the mutation is different in human and zebrafish genes.Humans acquired dark skin in Africa about 1.5 million years ago to protect bodies from ultra-violet rays of the sun (太阳光紫外线), which can cause skincancer. But when modern humans leave Africa to live in northern latitudes, they need more sunlight on their skin to produce vitamin D. So the related gene changes, according to Cheng.Asians have the same version of the gene as Africans, so they probably acquired their light skin through the action of some other gene that affects skin color, said Cheng. The new discovery could lead to medical treatments for skin cancer. It also could lead to research into ways to change skin color without damaging it like chemical treatment did on Michael Jackson.36. The passage mainly tells us that ________.A. people can not change their skin color without any painB. the new discovery could lead to research into ways to change skin color safelyC. pop king Michael Jackson often changed his skin color as he likedD. scientis ts have found out that people’s skin color is determined by the gene37. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A. nowadays people who want to change their skin color have to suffer a lotfrom the damage caused by the chemical treatmentB. Europeans and Africans have the same geneC. the new discovery could help to find medical treatments for skin cancerD. there are two kinds of genes38. Scientists have done an experiment on a dark-striped zebrafish in order to ________.A. find the different genes of humans’B. prove the humans’ skin color is determined by the pigment geneC. find out the reason why the Africans’ skin color is darkD. find out the ways of changing people’s skin color39. The reason why Europeans are light-skinned is probably that _____A. they are born light-skinned peopleB. light-skinned Europeans have mutation in the gene for melanin productionC. they have fewer activities outsideD. they pay much attention to protecting their skin40. Th e writer’s attitude towards the discovery is ________.A. neutralB. negativeC. positiveD. unconcernedDLanguage learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will "obey" spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word "obey" is hardly accurate as a description of the eagerand delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But sincethese can't be said to show the baby's intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation leads on to deliberate (有意的) imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get out. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world. Thus the use at seven months of "mama" as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, however, whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds.41. Before children start speaking, _____.A. they need equal amount of listeningB. they need different amounts of listeningC. they are all eager to cooperate with the adults by obeying spoken instructionsD. they can't understand and obey the adult's oral instructions42. Children who start speaking late _____.A. may have problems with their listeningB. probably do not hear enough language spoken around themC. usually pay close attention to what they hearD. often take a long time in learning to listen properly43. A baby's first noises are _____.A. an expression of his moods and feelingsB. an early form of languageC. a sign that he means to tell you somethingD. an imitation of the speech of adults44. The problem of deciding at what point a baby's imitations can be considered asspeech _____.A. is important because words have different meanings for different peopleB. is one that should be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with ageC. is not especially important because the changeover takes place graduallyD. is one that should be completely ignored (忽略) because children's use of words is often meaningless45. The author implies _____.A. parents can never hope to teach their children new soundsB. even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoy imitatingC. children no longer imitate people after they begin to speakD. children who are good at imitating learn new words more quickly第二节:信息匹配:(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while —then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, b ecause friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness tous if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, e xcept for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!28. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.D. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.A. warmly welcomed at the airportB. offered a ride to his homeC. treated hospitably at his homeD. treated to dinner in a restaurant30. The underlined words “generous with our time”in Paragraph 3probably mean______.A. strict with timeB. serious with timeC. careful with timeD. willing to spend time31. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very very strange to her that I hadn’t talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girla favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued(继续)to believe that Ihad cheated on the test.32.
