They are intelligent animals born with both excellent memory and artistic talent. Elephants eat about 495 pounds of vegetarian food a day. They spend about 16 hours a day eating, but must walk about 4 miles a day in search of food. The average(通常的)elephant lives about 70 years, and its sharp memory allows it to remember places where it has found food as long as, 30 years earlier, even as a baby.In an elephant’s travels, it comes across other elephants also looking for food. Some elephants are friendly, and some are not so nice. Elephants remember every elephant they have ever met. They can even recognize an elephant they perhaps haven’t seen for 30 years. They immediately remember whether this elephant is an enemy or a friend. When elephants are not searching for food, they sometimes produce art in the sand with their trunks(象鼻).They seem to .enjoy just relaxing and painting in the sand. One day, an elephant zoo-keeper noticed this and gave an elephant a paint brush filled with red paint to see if the elephant would paint on a canvas(画布).Sure it enough, it did, and since then elephants in most zoos have been given paint brushes, paints, and canvases. The resulting abstract(抽象的)art has been sold for high prices around the world. The money goes to support feeding the elephants in the zoos. Most felt that the elephants were only capable of painting abstracts. However, they have been trained to paint trees, flowers, and other things in nature. This has enabled us to understand “elephant genius(天才)”even more.24. What does the underlined word “underestimated” mean?A. Underdeveloped.B. Undervalued.C. Mistaken.D. Controlled.25. What can we learn about elephants’ memory?A. It can reach as far back as 30 years.B. It is at its best in the first 30 years.C. It differs greatly among elephants.D. It remains excellent for 70 years.26. Why did the zoo-keeper give the elephant a brush?A. To attract visitors to it.B. To train it to paint pictures.C. To prove it was a born artist.D. To find out whether it could draw.27. Which can best describe elephants according to the text?A. Highly smart.B. Unusually quiet.C. Really brave.D Extremely friendly.CScientists at the University of Hawaii at Manoa studied a huge area in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean known as the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, or CCZ to find and study new sea species.Diva Amon, a researcher at the University says usually deep sea biologists think there is not a lot living in the deep sea.“But we found that actually there is quite a lot living there, and so that was really exciting …” she says. The group is studying the area because the CCZ, a huge and flat area of seabed, is known to have valuable minerals. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is allowing the company UK Seabed Resources Ltd. to explore the area on the Pacific Ocean floor for mining. However, the ISA said the company must first complete a biological study of the area before it can begin mining for metals. So, the company employed Amon and her group.Amon says that more than half of the animals they collected were completely new to science. Her group discovered not only new species, but new genera(动植物的属)of animals.Biological oceanographer Paul Snelgrove says that finding new species in the deep ocean is common. But, he said, finding a new genus “is really great.”Amon warns that if mining happens across the whole area, the ecosystem would be largely destroyed. But, she says, we will find the least damaging way to make mining possible.“There is a sort of scientific push to try and slow things down a bit so that thescience can be done before …so it can be done with the least influence possible…”she says.“It’s likely we are going to develop at least some parts of these deep ocean environments and do it in a way that’s going to minimize(最小化)our influence,”says Paul.28. What did scientists try to find out in the CCZ?A. Whether there is life.B. Whether there are valuable minerals.C. What sea life exists there.D. What metals lie under the sea floor.29. What does Paul say about finding new sea species?A. It’s something unusual.B. It’s nothing to be surprised at.C. It has a far-reaching effect on science.D. It proves common species will change.30. What is Amon’s attitude towards mining the CCZ?A. Careful.B. Doubtful.C. Unsupportive.D. Uninterested.31. What does the underlined word “it” in the text refer to?A. MinimB. A scientific push.C. Finding the least damaging wayD. Developing the ocean environments.DThis journey began this morning almost an hour later than I had planned, although I had completed my packing before eight o’clock. I was quite clear about the fact that once I left, my house would stand empty for probably the first time since the day it was built. It was a strange feeling and perhaps explains why I was leaving so late, walking around the house many times over, checking one last time to see that allwas in order. It is hard to explain my feelings once I did’t finally set off. As I drove further and further from the house,I found the surroundings(周围的事物)grow unrecognizable.I began to have a feeling of unease mixed with excitement. I took a turning and found myself on a road circling the edge of a hill. I could sense the steep(陡峭的)drop to my left. I felt a sense of alarm that I was perhaps not on the / correct road at all, but speeding off in the wrong direction into a wilderness. It was only the feeling of a moment, but it caused me to slow down. And even when I was sure I was on the right road, I felt forced to stop the car a moment to think carefully.I decided to step out and stretch(伸展)my legs a little. On the one side of the road, thickets and small trees rose sharply, while on the other I could now see the distant countryside and a town nearbyI walked a little way along the roadside, when ii I heard a voice behind me. Until this point I had believed myself quite alone and I turned in some surprise. Sitting on the large stone was a thin, a white-haired man. He called to me again and signaled me to join him. For a moment, I took him for a homeless man, but then I saw he was just some local man enjoying the fresh air and summer sunshine, and saw no reason not to do so.32. Why did the author set off later than planned?A. He repeatedly checked the house.B. He was feeling sad about leaving the house.C. Packing his belongings took longer than expected.D. There was no one to help him get everything ready.33. What caused the author to start driving more slowly?A. The road had become steep.B. He realized he was driving too fast.C. Even without daylight, the crab’ s skin colour continued to change exact on time. This characteristic ( 特点 ) probably developed gradually in answer to the daily rising andsetting of the sun, to help protect the crab from sunlight and enemies. After millions of years ithas become completely regulated ( 受控制 ) inside the living body of the crab. The biologists noticed that once each day the colour of the fiddler crab is especially dark, and that each day this happens fifty minutes later than on the day before. From this theydiscovered that each crab follows not only the rhythm of the sun but also that of the tides ( 潮水 ).The crab’s period of greatest darkening is exactly the time of low tide on the beach where it wascought!41.The fiddler crab is like a clock because it changes colour ______.A in a regular 24 — hour rhythm B. in answer to the sun’ s raysC. at low tideD. every fifty minutes42. Koningsdag-The NetherlandKoningsdag or King's Day is a national holiday in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Netherlands.BA British friend told me he couldn't understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds(葵花子)as a snack so much. "I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth; I believe that's from cracking the seeds," he said.I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. Irealized that whenever I'm watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn't like sunflower seeds, and,to him, it seems unnecessary to work so hard just to getone small seed. When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, weall lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year's Eve to check out what every household was making.I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. In the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with a fancy tablecloth,ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast.I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.I don't think it's right to criticize one's choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem. It's not only in China. When I went abroad,I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much itruins their breath. They think it's a delicacy, and it's connected with their culture. I think it's a wonderful tradition.4. What did the writer become aware of?A. She had ever typed a report about seeds.B. She ate various snacks while watching TV.C. She has a habit of cracking sunflower seeds.D. She damaged her teeth by eating sunflower seeds.5. What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year?A. The traditions of celebrating it disappear.B. Children can eat delicious food on that day.C. The families would get together for it.D. Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.6. The writer's attitude to Denmark's way of eating bread is_________.A.acceptableB. criticalC.neutralD. doubtful7. What lesson can we learn from the passage?A. One kind of food doesn't necessarily suit everyone.B. Eating habits come from a certain culture.C. It is good to form healthy eating habits.D. Changing your eating habits will change your life.CCinco de Mayo is probably the holiday most often celebrated that no one understands.Literally(根据字面意思)"Fifth of May",Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican Holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862. In 1861,France sent a big army to invade Mexico, as they wanted to collect some war debts. The French army was much larger, better trained and equipped than the Mexicansstruggling to defend(保卫)the road to Mexico City. The French army reached Puebla, where the Mexicans won a huge victory. The victory was short-lived, as the French army regrouped and continued, and eventually took Mexico City, but the joy of an unlikely victory against France is remembered every May fifth.Mexico celebrates its independence on September16, because it was on that day in 1810 that Father Miguel Hidalgo invited his people to take up arms and join him in fighting against Spanish rulers.Independence Day is a much more important holiday in Mexico. For some reason, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the United States of America, by Mexicans and Americans alike, than it is in Mexico. One theory for why it is more popular in the USA is that at one time,it was celebrated in all of Mexico and by Mexicans living in former Mexican areas such as Texas and California. It was ignored in Mexico after a while but still celebrated in the north of the border, which never got out of the habit of remembering the famous battle. In Puebla and in many American cities with large Mexican populations, there are parades, dancing and festivals. Traditional Mexican food is often served or sold. Mariachi (街头音乐) bands fill town squares, and a lot of beers are served. It's a fun holiday, really more about celebrating the Mexican way of life than about remembering the battle which happened 156 years ago. In the USA, schoolchildren decorate their classrooms and try their hand at cooking some basic Mexican food. All over the world,Mexican restaurants bring in mariachi bands and offer specials for what's almost certain to be a packed house.8. According to the text, people celebrate Cinco de Mayo because _________.A. Mexicans paid off their war debtsB. Mexicans succeeded in defending Mexico CityC. Mexicans gained independence from SpanishD. Mexicans defeated the French army in Puebla9. Why do more Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo?A. Because some American areas once belonged to Mexico.B. Because Americans are influenced by Mexican culture.C. Because Mexicans don't form the habit of having a holiday.D. Because many Mexicans value Independence Day.10. How can schoolchildren celebrate Cinco de Mayo?A. By performing music at restaurants.B. By trying making some Mexican food.C. By turning the classroom into a battlefield.D. By offering special gifts to their teachers.11.By celebrating Cinco de Mayo, people mainly showA. where the history is honored mostB.what special customs they haveC. how Mexicans gained their independenceD. who should be remembered forever二、七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)We always make ourselves believe that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, and thenanother. Then we are frustrated(受挫的)that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more satisfied when theyare.____1___ We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when we get a nice car, and are able to go ona nice vacation, when we retire.

AThe pupils of Grangetown High have been busy getting to know their newest and tallest classmate — a 7-meter-tall giraffe outside their school. The giraffe is a huge sculpture (雕像) made by a local artist. The school's headmaster noticed the sculpture in the artist's garden as he drove past one day, and thought it would be perfect for his school. “I knew everyone would love it,” he said, “because our basketball team is known as the Grangetown Giraffes, and they wear giraffes on their shirts. So I asked them to write a letter to the artist, asking how much it would cost to buy the giraffe. He was very kind and got it ready to deliver (递送) in six weeks — all for nothing! It was expected to arrive one Sunday morning, so that the pupils would see it when they got to school on Monday — at that time they had no idea that we were getting it.”The artist, Tom Bennett, was a university professor (教授) of chemistry before he left that job in 2006 and only took up metalwork a couple of years ago. “I've always drawn pictures,” he said. “I can even remember doing it on my first day at school — I drew a horse. I wanted it to be the best horse picture ever, but I don't think I succeeded.” Tom's first metalwork was a bicycle for two that he and his wife could go cycling on together. “It was the most uncomfortable bike ever created,” he said, “so I gave up making bicycles and went into sculpture instead.”Meanwhile the pupils at Grangetown High are very happy with their new classmate. “We're going to hold a competition to give it a proper name,” said one girl. “Everyone likes the expression on its face, so perhaps that will give us some ideas.”21. According to the text, the giraffe _____.A. was as tall as a basketball playerB. was given to Grangetown High for freeC. was sent to Grangetown High on MondayD. was specially made for a basketball team22. When the pupils got to school on Monday, they probably felt _____.A. shyB. sadC. excitedD. confident23. What can we learn about Tom Bennett?A. He showed interest in art at an early age.B. He was good at drawing, especially horses.C. He visited Grangetown High as a professor.D. He learned a lot about sculpture at university.24. What's the main idea of the text?A. It was a difficult job to name a giraffe.B. Tom Bennett is well-known as a sculptor.C. The Grangetown Giraffes is a strong team.D. A metal giraffe arrived at Grangetown High.BOver 40 years ago, a country music DJ convention (大会) was held every year in Nashville, Tennessee. Many country performers used to attend (参加) the convention to give their performances. Fans would go to Nashville hoping to see their favorite performers. In the end, so many fans began showing up in Nashville that a festival named Fan Fair was born. The first Fan Fair was held in April 1972, in Nashville for four days. Some of country music's biggest stars attended. There were about fifty thousand fans. The first Fan Fair was so successful that planning began almost immediately for 1973. The date was changed to June, when the weather would be better. Over one hundred thousand fans attended the second Fan Fair.Every year brought so many performers and fans to Fan Fair that, in 1982, it was moved to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. Fan Fair stayed at the fairgrounds for another nineteen years. There was always the unexpected during the festival. In 1974, former Beatle Paul McCartney attended. In 1992, more than six hundred reporters from Europe, Asia, and South America went to cover the appearance of a popular star, Billy Ray Cyrus, who had introduced a new country line dance. In 1996, Garth Brooks, who made a surprise appearance, signed autographs (签名) for 23 hours. In 2001, Fan Fair returned to downtown Nashville as the world's biggest country music festival. Now, over one hundred and twenty-five thousand country music fans go to Nashville every June. As you can imagine, those who want to attend Fan Fairmust plan ahead. For example, they need to buy a ticket several months ahead of time. Of course, there's much more to prepare.25. According to the text, Fan Fair _____.A. has a history of more than 50 yearsB. lasts almost half a month every yearC. is the most important music festival in AmericaD. is a time when country music lovers get together26. The second Fan Fair _____.A. was held in the spring of 1972B. was more popular than the first oneC. was moved from Nashville to the fairgroundsD. was attended by former Beatle Paul McCartney27. The purpose of the fourth paragraph is to _____.A. show why Fan Fair has been popularB. introduce three famous musiciansC. explain how Fan Fair startedD. ask people to attend Fan Fair28. What will the author probably talk about next?A. Advice for fans.B. Music in America.C. Education in Nashville.D. The future of country music.CSome unwelcome visitors from North America have been turning up in the waters off the coast of Great Britain.North American lobsters (龙虾) have been found in the North Sea (between Great Britain and Northwest Europe), far from their own habitat. The lobsters usually live along the eastern coast of Canada and the United States. It is impossible that the lobsters could have made the 5,600-kilometre journey on their own. They were probably brought to Britain and then got away from containers. Some of the lobsters that were caught had elastic bands (松紧带) holding their legs shut, like lobsters that are kept in containers in stores or restaurants. Many may have been “set free” from some ships passing through the area. Sometimes passengers order a live lobster from a tank in the dining room and then ask the waiter to throw it overboard instead of cooking it.According to official records, 26 North American lobsters have been caught in waters off Great Britain since 1988. However, it is believed many more have been found but not reported. It is against the law to let North American lobsters come into British waters. If they settle down in European waters, it would be bad for the local lobsters. The two live in the same place and eat the same food. But North American lobsters are larger, stronger and more aggressive (好斗的) than European lobsters, and they produce young more quickly. As a result, they could take food and space away from the local lobsters, and from other types of shellfish that live in the same area. These lobsters may also carry diseases that could harm the local lobsters.29. Those unwelcome lobsters _____.A. could travel 5,600 km a day on their ownB. used to live in waters off Great BritainC. would soon disappear in British watersD. might have escaped on the way to Britain30. What can we learn about European lobsters?A. They are growing too fast to be kept under control.B. Shellfish often take away their food and space.C. They are easily harmed by North American lobsters.D. People become ill easily if they eat these lobsters.31. The author's purpose of writing the text is most likely to _____.A. discussB. reportC. advertiseD. introduceDMost buildings are built to stand up straight, but these look as if they might fall over! The church tower of SuurhusenBuilt in 1450, the 27-metre-high church tower lies in Suurhusen, Germany. It was built in wet land on foundations of oak tree trunks (树干). When the land was drained (排水) later, the wood broke down, causing one side of the tower to be a little lower than the other. In 1975, the tower became a real hazard and people were not allowed to enter until the foundations were made strong again. The lean (倾斜) of the tower is now about five degrees. The Leaning Tower of PisaThe work of building the tower began in 1173, and was finally completed in 1372. In fact, it began to lean after just a couple of floors were built. And this condition continued in the centuries after its completion. The tower was finally closed to the public in 1990 after people failed to stabilize (使稳固) its foundations. In 2001, it was reopened after engineers removed soil from underneath its raised side. Now it leans just an angle of 3.97 degrees.Capital Gate of Abu DhabiCompleted in 2011, the Capital Gate tower in Abu Dhabi was designed to lean eighteen degrees. The building stands next to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and contains, among other things, a fine hotel with wonderful views of the harbour. Also known as the leaning tower of Abu Dhabi, the tower is one of the tallest buildings in the city.Big Ben of LondonThe building leans 0.26 degrees to the northwest. This was mainly caused by the engineering projects (项目) that have been carried out in the ground below it since thelate 1800s. The tower, which has been continuously open since it was completed in 1858, has nowhere near the lean of the Tower of Pisa and is still completely safe to enter.32. The underlined word “hazard” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_____”.A. dangerB. churchC. castleD. treasure33. What can we learn about the Leaning Tower of Pisa?A. It didn't lean until ten years after its completion.B. It took almost two hundred years to complete.C. It was built on foundations of oak tree trunks.D. It has been open since it was completed.34. Which of the following towers leans the most according to the text?A. The church tower of Suurhusen.B. The Leaning Tower of Pisa.C. Capital Gate of Abu Dhabi.D. Big Ben of London.35. And this story’s ending has yet to be penned. The school has been planning “Columbia’s Book of Kindness” for the past year. The 1,000-page, hardcover book was designed by Columbia Jewish Day School educator Jane Muller. Since last February, students and community (社区) members have been encouraged to write down acts of kindness in the book they have shown to others or have received.“When you turn the pages, you’ll see some wonderful things going on,” sa id Muller, who founded the school 21 years ago with her husband Rabbi Meir Muller.Muller, a poet and book artist, said the book offered her the chance to use her art to bring something meaningful to the community. She said she hopes to help youngpeople in particular understand the importance of making a difference where they are, rather than just looking to other acts of kindness. Those lessons appeared to be catching on at school in recent days, as a group of students shared some of their stories with each other. Eight-year-old Will Obradovich shared how he had helped his neighbors with their pet, while ten-year-old Samantha Beckmer designed a page showing how she believes a community should care for its people, the animals and the environment. “When we spread the kindness book around, it will encourage more people to be kind,” Samantha said. Ten-year-old Jack Lamey said the stories shared in the book have inspired (激励) him to look for new ways to be kind to others.“Columbia’s Book of Kindness” will b e circulated to various places in the community in the coming months of 2014. At each stop, people will be invited to share their stories about kindness through poetry, drawings and photographs. It takes between 40 to 60 years for an argan tree to become an adult. And scientists say that the tree may live for 200 to 400 years. But this long growing time can be a problem. When someone cuts down an argan tree, it takes a very long time for another one to grow and replace it.The women in Morocco make a special product from the trees: argan oil. They gather the fruit from the ground. Then, they take the seeds (籽) out of the fruit. When these seeds dry, they pound them between two stones to remove the oil.In the past, the women produced argan oil to use in cooking, on their skin, and to treat sicknesses. In the 1990s people in Europe began to learn about the special qualities of the oil, so the production of argan oil started to change. Many companies in the West moved to Morocco and used chemicals (化学物质) to get the oil out of the seeds, pushing out the native people and also making the argan forest suffering. So the Moroccan government started to help fix this problem. First, they talked to UNESCO. In 1998, UNESCO recognized the argan forest as a special place that the world will protect. The second step was to encourage the women in Morocco to form cooperatives (合作社). And the European Union declared that argan oil must be produced by these cooperatives.Today there are over 50 argan oil cooperatives run by women in Southwestern Morocco. These cooperatives not only give women a way to help support theirfamilies but also care for the existing forest and plant more argan trees. They make sure that the argan forest will exist for many more generations. Argan oil is more than just something to eat or rub on your skin. It is a product that makes a difference.63. What’s good about the argan tree?A. It stops the soil from blowing away.B. It can live in a very wet place.C. It has a short growing time.D. It doesn’t break easily.64. Why did the Western companies go to Morocco?A. To learn from the Moroccan women.B. To learn about the argan tree.C. To trade with the natives.D. To produce argan oil.65. Why does argan oil make a difference?A. It helps the people in Morocco.B. It helps the world get to know Africa.C. It helps the women get their equal rights.D. It helps improve Morocco’s international position.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
