电影艺术是近百年来兴起的一门综合性艺术形式，是文学、戏剧、美术和音乐等众多艺术元素在电影框架下的有机融合。
而电影音乐无疑具有最强的独立欣赏性，但是电影音乐不具有镜头语言的直观性，也不像电影语言那样具体性，所以电影音乐需要有独特的表现手法。
在电影艺术迅速发展的背景下，广大电影音乐工作者发现，由传统歌剧艺术中发展而来的“主导动机”手法，在电影音乐创作中具有诸多优势，特别是音乐元素的象征性与贯穿性，能够有效保证电影作品中音乐意义的承接性与连续性。
这种手法作为上个世纪电影音乐发展中的重要成就，在电影音乐创作中大放异彩。
美国电影音乐艺术家威廉姆斯是“主导动机”手法应用方面的佼佼者，他在电影音乐创作中为每首主题音乐都设计了一个别具特色的主导动机，并以此为基础进行演化、发展，为展现主题音乐形象服务。
在威廉姆斯的电影音乐作品中，由于“主导动机”手法的充分应用，电影音乐的不同要素均具有高度的主题化特征，反过来，由于作品多样化的和声创作手段，又使得音乐作品主导动机和声效果更具象征性与代表性。
对威廉姆斯电影音乐中的“主导动机”研究，不仅是其电影音乐作品研究的重要组成部分，同时对我国电影音乐的发展也具有重要的借鉴价值。
一、 电影音乐中“主导动机”手法历史沿革“主导动机”是指将代表某种思想或形象的一个旋律片段，贯穿于整部音乐作品，借以表现和深化主题的创作手法。
