ALike humans, animals need sleep too. A big problem for animals in the wild is keeping their enemiesaway while they sleep. Animals take care of this problem in different ways.Anolis lizards live in many areas including tropical rainforests. They often sleep on leaves at the end of long branches. A leaf might seem like a strange bed, but it works like an alarm. If a hungry snake wiggles a branch, the lizard wakes up and leaps to safety.Chimpanzees take their sleep very seriously. Each day, a chimpanzee builds itself a new, comfortable bed to sleep in. Scientists believe chimpanzees carefully choose a tree that is strong, where they build a nest using branches and leaves.Parrotfish live among coral reefs in oceans. Every night, parrotfish usually sleep close to the rock in sheltered places. Some parrotfish go one step further by quicklymaking a slime layer that covers their whole body. This covering acts like a sleeping bag that provides a barrier against danger.Bottle-nosed dolphins need to sleep, but they have to be on the ocean’s surface to breathe. They also need to watch over their young. What do they do? While half of the dolphin’s brain sleeps, the other half stays awake. After a while, the sleeping half wakes up while the other half snoozes.Sooty terns have the most amazing sleep. They nest on islands. When they are not nesting, they live for many years in the sky and on the sea’s surface. When and where can they sleep? He was then socially awkward, failing at school and terrible at ball games.Glasses turned his life around, yet even as a child he was aware of how luc ky he was. Bastawrous grew up in the UK, but his family would visit poor parts of Egypt, where his parentswere from. “Nobody there wore glasses, but I knew some people needed them,”h e says. “It feltincredibly unfair. At 16, I decided I wasn’t going to feel guilty about it any more.” He determined there and then to become an eye surgeon, and he did.In 2012, he and his wife moved with their one-year-old son to a small town 5 hours’ drive from Nairobi. They had limited electricity and running water. For 18 months, every time Bastawrous and his team set up their “mobile” eye clinic in yet another new location, they had to drag heavy, fragilehospital equipment cross-country. There was another problem, as one local doctor described it, “We don’t even have enough doctors and now you also want eye surgeons? That’s probably a pipe dream.”All this convinced Bastawrous that something fundamental was needed. So he started exploring ways to replace his clinic with a single, convenient device: a smartphone. He co-developed an app-based visual test that gathers as much information as the classic one, using similar principles. The critical difference is that almost anyone can carry it out after just a few minutes of training. Bastawrous co-founded a charitable company to develop and apply the technology more widely. His team also developed technologies that enabled a smartphone camera to take hospital-grade images of the back of the eye. That’s a pretty good start, but Bastawrous has his sights set sky high. “I feel we’re at a tipping point now where this enormous problem will become a historical thing. That’s when I’ll sleep easy,” he says.24. What drove Bastawrous to become an eye surgeon?A. His personal misfortune.B. His burning sense of injustice.C. His ambition to turn his life around.D. His guilt about leaving his home country.25. What can we infer about Bastawrou s’s first 18 months in Africa?A. It’s hard and problematic.B. It’s challenging but fruitful.C. It’s adventurous and unrealistic.D. It’s fundamental but innovative.26. Bastawrous’s innovation can be described as .A. cheap and convenient treatments for patientsB. a virtual and complete change from a classic testC. a smart and popularised application of technologyD. fast and effective trainings of medical professionals27. What do Bastawrous’s words in the last paragraph show?A. His modest attitude to his past achievements.B. His optimistic views on the cure for blindness.C. His strong belief in the effects of future technology.D. His firm determination to carry on his challenging career.CFeeling overloaded by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the elixir many of us dream it could be.In a new study released last week, researchers analyzed data from two large-scale (大规模) surveys about how Americans spend their time. Together, the surveys included more than 35,000 respondents. The researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective well-being — but only up to a point. People who had around two hours of free timea day generally reported they felt better than those who had less time. But people who had five ormore hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse. So ultimately the free-time “sweetspot” might be two to th ree hours per day, the findings suggest.Part of finding thi s seemingly tricky “sweet spot” has to do with how people spend the extra time they have, the researchers behind the new study argue. They conducted several smaller online experiments. In one they asked participants to imagine having 3.5 to 7 free hours per day. They were asked to imagine spending that time doing “productive” things (like exercising) or to imagine doing “unproductive” activities ( like watching TV). Study participants believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day — but only if they used it unproductively. Though that experiment was hypothetical, which is one limitation of the new research, it’s certainly in line with other research showing that being in a state of “flow” can be good for people’s mental health.Of course, what feels “productive” is up to you. Many traditionally productive or purposeful activities can be easy and fun. Engaging in a bit of low-key cardio, like walking and jogging, can help burn stress. Free-time activities like reading or cooking are also known to put people in a state of flow.28. What does the underlined word “elixir” in paragraph 1 refer to?A. Magic solution.B. Physical power.C. Psychological test.D. Relaxed atmosphere.29. How did the researchers carry out the new study?A. By doing large-scale online surveys.B. By giving interviews and mental tests.C. By comparing respondents’ backgrounds.D. By conducting experiments and analyzing data.30. What is a distinct finding of the new research?A. Doing unproductive things leads to unhappiness.B. Being in a state of flow benefits people’s mental health.C. Man’s well-being is positively related to the free time they have.D. How people spend their free time affects their sense of well-being.31. What is the focus of the last paragraph?A. The importance of burning stress.B. Easy and fun activities to kill time.C. Further explanation of being productive.D. The benefits of engaging in free-time activities.DEven when communing with nature we depend on technology for help — but then, so did Thoreau (梭罗) at Walden Pond (瓦尔登湖).Walking in the same woods yesterday, I let myself wander at random, communing with nature.I took in beautiful scenery near and far thanks to my progressive-lens eyeglasses. Occasionally I’d p ull out my smartphone to take pictures on anything interesting. I recorded an inner monologue with a background of all sounds of the forest. At times, I consulted my smart watch to check on my heartbeat, mileage and calorie burn. Eventually I realized I was quite lost. Not a problem of course. Online maps came to my rescue. But something bothered me. In what I’d intended as a nature experience, here I was using very high technology to help myself out. This insight triggered a reconsideration of everything that happened during my “nature walk,” which had been technologically enhanced every step of the way. I’d been functioning as a man-machine combination: a cyborg. What would the true naturalist Thoreau think of that? My first thought was that he’d be sh ocked. But later I did some research. Thoreau enjoyed what his spyglass discovered, like this eagle from his journal:Lying on the ground with my glass, I could watch him very easily … till I almost lost him in the clouds … I think I have got the worth of my glass now that it has revealed to me the white-headed eagle.Famously, Thoreau always set out equipped with a walking stick, which he used not only for support but also to take measurements of water and snow levels. His hat was also a tool, which he cal led his “botany-box.” And he was prep ared even with needles and thread, so when coming out of the woods, he was “the best dressed.” Clearly, Thoreau was a bit of a cyborg himself.Thinking more deeply, I realized we’ve come a long way from our hunter-gatherer ancestors, who walked from neces sity and relied on nature’s gift. Cyborgs are us.32. What is the purpose of the text?A. To recommend Thoreau’s book Walden Pond.B. To argue that humans have developed into cyborgs.C. To share the reflections on man’s reliance on nature.D. To question whether people are technology-dependent.33. Which picture best illustrates a cyborg in the author’s eye?A. B.C.D.34. Why does the author quote Thoreau’s journal?A. To introduce a literary work on nature.B. To explain how to prepare for a nature walk.C. To prove that even naturalists use technology.D. To describe the natural beauty Thoreau enjoyed.35. What is the author’s attitude towards being a cyborg?A. Favorable.B. Intolerant.C. Doubtful.D. Unclear.第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分, 满分12.5 分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

A regular customer had rushed him to her office after his pet dog brought the cat home in his mouth. The dog's owner was horrified, believing that his pet had caused the cat's injuries. But Kennon found no teeth marks or bite wounds, which showed that the dog had probably saved, not harmed, the kitten. In Kennon’s opinion, however, the cat was a hopeless case. Many doctors would have put down such a badly hurt animal. But she couldn’t be so cruel. The kitten’s bright eyes and sad face had won her over. There was no way of finding his owner, so Kennon, a single woman aged 56, decided to keep him.She gave him a round of shots and fed him food mixed with medicines. He couldn’t move his back legs but soon started pulling himself forward with his front legs. The doctor named him Scooter and contacted a company that makes carts for disabled animals. Scooter took to his newwheels like a natural. In no time he was able to move freely, if somewhat awkwardly, around Kennon’s office, home and even her backyard. The sight of the determined Scooter was uplifting and amusing in equal measure and Kennon had to smile each time the cat entered the room.Kennon was convinced that her kitten could share his high spirits with others. So she took Scooter to the local hospital to see if he could help the patients. His first patient was an elderly woman who’d had a stroke and hadn’t spoken to anyone for two days. Scooter jumped out of Kennon’s arms and onto the bed, rolled over to the patient, and lay gently near her cheek, purring softly. The woman looked at Scooter. “Kitty,” she murmured as she began to talk to him. Amazed, Kennon turned to the doctor--- and saw that she was in tears. The cat had engineered a small miracle.Today Scooter spends about ten hours a month working with patients who are recovering from strokes and injuries. Again and again, Kennon watches as her cat provides hope and comfort. As one patient who’d lost her leg in a car accident said, “If he can do it, so can I.”26. From Paragraph 1, we know that ___________.A. the do g’s owner was a stranger to KennonB. the cat had several bite marks on its bodyC. the dog was extremely cruel to the catD. who actually injured the cat was unknown27. The underlined phrase “put down” in Paragraph 2 most probably means___________.A. hurtB. killedC. refusedD. replaced28. Why did Kennon decide to keep the cat?A. She wanted a companion.B. The cat’s owner abandoned him.C. She liked the cat.D. The cat was hopeless.29. How did Kennon help the cat move around?A. By curing his broken back.B. By getting him a special cart.C. By feeding him medicines.D. By exercising him in her backyard.30. According to the passage, what is the main reason that the cat works miracle?A. He is able to inspire others.B. Patients feel sympathy for him.C. People are amused by his appearance.D.He has the ability to cure the ill.BWe each have a unique genetic(基因的,遗传的) make-up. Every cell of your body has the same set of about 100,000 separate genes made of DNA. These are the instructions for producing a person. Genes decide everything from the colour of your skin to the way your brain works. You have one of several billion combinations of DNA which come from the random mixing of your parents’genes. Except for identical twins(同卵双胞胎), no one has the same combination as another person. You are unique! You are unique in another way too: in the way you are raised and all the experiences you have from before birth to adult life. These experiences influence you, your behaviour and attitudes, and the choices you make. But are genes or life experiences more important in shaping your appearance and personality? Scientists are studying twins to find out. One set of twins occurs every 70births---some are identical and others are non-identical twins. Identical twins are special because they share exactly the same genes and often the same environment. Non-identical twins are more like ordinary brothers and sisters. Some identical twins have been adopted and brought up in different homes. With identical genes but a different home environment, scientists can study twins to see how much a particular feature depends on the genes we inherit. For example, we know that eye problems, like short-sightedness, are mostly genetic. But resistance to pain is largely dependent on experiences. Genes also influence our eating habits. Identical twins brought up apart often like to eat at the same time of day and feel full after eating the same amount. Non-identical twins in similar circumstances have more varied eating habits. Identical twins are also more likely to follow the same patterns for marriage and divorce than non-identical twins.Scientists are trying to identify the different genes that influence our behaviour. Some people are thrill-seekers and get into risk-taking and adventurous activities. They take up extreme sports like bungee jumping and possibly take drugs. Scientists have discovered a gene which affects this.We could ask, “Are our lives determined by our genes or our upbringing?” Scientists are learning more all the time, but it is certainly true that both are important in making us who we are.31. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?A. We cannot easily change our physical appearance.B. How we turn out depends on our parents’ genes.C. Everyone has a physical double somewhere in the world.D. Both our genes and our experiences make us who we are.32. Why are scientists studying twins?A. To find out how many twins are born every year.B. To discover what shapes us as individuals.C. To compare differences between twins.D. To study brother-and-sister relationships.33. According to the passage, __________.A. one in 70 twins are genetically identicalB. non-identical twins are usually not of the same sexC. twins separated at birth behave exactly the sameD. identical twins are genetically the same34. Which of the following is most affected by experience according the passage?A. Eating habits.B. Eye-sight.C. Pain resistance.D. Marriage patterns.35. What does the underlined “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. Our love of sport.B. Our attitude to risk-taking.C. Our skill at bungee jumping.D. Our ability to take drugs.CAs you climb into the hill country, the roads get dustier and rougher, and fewer cars can be seen. Phonxay is one of the poorest districts of Laos, and many of its villages are only accessible by footpath. Our destination this hot morning is a concrete water tank that can be found just off the road. A UK organization helped to build it six years ago, and in the nearby village of Thapho, where clean drinking water is scarce, it has made a big difference. The tank feeds six taps which in turn give water to over 800 people---it has improved things for almost every family, from schoolchildren to grannies. But lately, we were told, the clean water supply has come under pressure from new arrivals, people who have come down from the hill areas, and there are concerns that there will not be enough clean water to go round. There are also serious worries about resources in Laos. The Chinese are building a 400km railway link, which could transform the landlocked country. About 150,000 Chinese workers will be involved. What will this do to local clean water supplies? How will the workers be fed?The vast majority of Laotians live on farms. But with foreign investors wanting to buy up land, local people will have to be moved to make room for them. Heavily dependent on both foreign aid and foreign investment, Laos still falls well behind its neighbours, although its economy has grown at about 6% a year in the last decade. Its biggest economic problem is the lack of locally trained skilled workforce. But there are reasons to be hopeful for the future. Laos is beautiful, and foreign tourism continues to grow: fortunately so far the fast-food chains and coffee bars common elsewhere are nowhere to be seen. Although all local media are government-run, the Internet is not controlled and the BBC and CNN are available to those with satellite dishes. The government has also achieved impressive results in rural development, with communities benefiting not just from cleaner water but the construction of new schools and regular visits from medical teams. Poverty will not be history in Laos within the next decade, but with small steps forward and a bit of outside help, the country could find itself out of the UN’s least-developed category by 2020.36. The underlined word ”scarce” in paragraph 1 most probably means_________.A. valuableB. rareC. infrequentD. missing37. What is putting pressure on the local supply of clean water?A. Dust from the road is making the water dirtier.B. There are too many taps accessing the water.C. The population of the area is growing fast.D. The coming summer will dry up rivers and lakes.38. What is the most serious limitation on Laos’ economic growth?A. The lack of local skilled workers.B. A poor transportation system.C. Too much foreign aid.D. Too many foreign workers.39. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a reason for Laos to be hopeful?A. There are no fast-food restaurants in the country.B. Laos has a variety of tourist attractions.C. Information on the Internet is freely accessible.D. The government owns all local media.40. What is the best title for the passage?A. Laos: small steps forward.B. Laos: slow-developing nationsC. Laos: least-developed landD. Laos: landlocked countryDOne-hundred-and seventh birthdays aren’t usually celebrated for authors who aren’t alive anymore. But Theodor Seuss Geisel---better known as the children’s books author Dr. Seuss ---who came into the world on 2 March, 1904, was an unusual man.Like generations of children I was raised on his wonderful stories. But when I now read them to my children it’s not just the childhood memories I enjoy. His writing is brilliant and imaginative and flows with a self-confidence as sure as the words of a Shakespeare poem. Readers ride his characteristic rhythm with an effortless joy that cannot be matched by any other modern writer:You have brains in your headYou have feet in your shoesYou can steer yourself any direction you chooseAnd will you succeed?Yes indeed, yes indeed!Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed.Seuss’s brilliant cartoons and clever words make his books a delight for adults but they appeal most to children of course. His stories teach kids moral lessons but in indirect and entertaining ways. The first Seuss book I was given was The Lorax, written just as the 60s were becoming the 70s. Seuss was ahead of his time, and in this book the dawn of concern for environmental problems are shown as the Lorax “who speaks for the trees” battles against an evil businessman who wants to destroy the forest and make goods “which everyone needs”.It’s not only a warning of the heavy price of environmental destruction, written well before most people had thought to worry, but it’s also a smart analysis of consumer societies: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”This is of course a moral message, but not of the kind designed to persuade the youngsters into behavior that adults want.I could go on, but hey, it’s a birthday, and I’m sure you folks have some good toasts to raise for the party…41. What’s the purpose of this passage?A. To introduce Dr. Seuss’s life.B. To analyse Dr. Seuss’s books.C. To describe Dr. Seuss’s writing style.D. To celebrate Dr. Seuss’s achievements.42. Why does the author include Dr. Seuss’s poem?A. To encourage readers to use their brains and choose their own way.B. To give readers a sample of Seuss’s story The Lorax.C. To provide readers with an example of Seuss’s writing style.D. To explain how relevant Seuss’s stories remain today.43. Why do adults also enjoy Seuss’s books?A. His words and pictures are imaginative enough to be enjoyed by all.B. His books give children obvious moral messages to learn from.C. He writes about adult topics in a way that is understandable to children.D. He was the first person to write about the environment.44. When was the book The Lorax written?A. Early 1960s.B. Early 1970s.C. Late1960s. D. Late 1970s.45. Which of the following is true about Seuss?A. Many of the issues he discussed attractedgreater concern in later years.B. He is widely considered as thetwentieth-century Shakespeare.C. His books are more popular now than when they were first published.D. Most readers thought his ideas were difficult to understand.第二节信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)请阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

The root of“courage”is “cor,” the Latin word for heart. Originally, courage meant“to speak one’s mind by telling all one's heart.”While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays, I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel.I recently witnessed an example of true courage. During a mountain-climbing trip with my15-year-old daughter and some college students, I noticed her struggling to keep up with the group. Despite my suggestions to rest, she persisted until she couldn't breathe properly.Panicked, I called out to the front for help, but there was no response, and we had no cellphone signal. Fortunately, two students just came back to check out on us. They offered assistance and calmed us down. As we continued at a slower pace, they shared their own experiences, from starting out as beginners like my daughter to becoming consistently among the first to reach the peak.“You know,” one of them said, looking at my daughter,“I was just like you when I started. But with practice and proper pace, you'll get there too.”“Yeah, don't let your lack of experience stop you,” the other added. “It's okay to admit when you're struggling or not feeling alright. In fact, it's important to speak up and ask for help when you need it. That's how we improve and grow.”Reaching the mountain top was a huge relief for both my daughter and me. However, the two students addressed the celebrating group directly, emphasizing the importance of staying together in tough environments. Their words led the group to apologize to us for overlooking our struggle.I was totally amazed at their bravery, and my daughter learned that it's okay to be the least experienced in a group. Courage, I've come to realize, has a ripple effect. Each time we choose courage, we inspire those around us to be a little brave r and make the world a little better.24. Why does the author mention the original meaning of courage?A. To argue for the true essence of courage.B. To question the common belief of courage.C. To show the changing meaning of courage.D. To compare different interpretations of courage.25. What did the two students suggest the daughter do?A. Challenge her own limits.B. Seek help whenever possible.C. Keep to a suitable pace.D. Stick with experienced climbers.26. Which action in the mountain-climbing story is an example of true courage?A. The mother asked the girl to rest.B. The girl tried hard not to fall behind.C. The group celebrated the reach of the top.D. The two students pointed out the group's fault.27. What does the author intend to tell us?A. Kindness connects us all.B. Being a beginner takes courage.C. With courage, everyone can be perfect.D. We don't have to be a hero to be brave.C“It's not unusual for guests to feel emotional when they discover the story behind our food,” says Patrick Navis. “Not to mention when they taste it. One even cried with happiness.” The setting for these tearful scenes? Navis's restaurant in a Dutch city. Here, the owner and his team create experimental food using herbs, roots, flowers and nuts—some common, others less so.Most of these ingredients(食材) come from the Ketelbroek Food Forest nearby. To the untrained eye, it's like an ordinary wood. But there's one key difference: everything in it is edible. It was set up in 2009 by Dutch botanist and environmentalist Noah Eck as an experiment in slow farming, to see what would happen if the right combination of food plants were left to grow together like a natural forest, without chemicals.“It's the first ‘food forest’ of its kind in Europe and we’re one of the few restaurants around the world cooperating in this way,”says Navis.“We have over 400 different species of edible plants we plan our menus around, including some we previously knew little about." He harvests the ingredients and, with his fellow chefs, works them into beautifully presented tasting menus, served in a dining room hidden in the backstreets of the city,“To us, fine dining is not about the fame of a restaurant, its location, expensive decoration, fancy cooking and wine list,”says Navis.“It's about adding value through creativity and using ingredients nobody knows of, which are grown with great attention.”However, he adds, luxury cooking can be about enhancing everyday ingredients, too.“When looking at cooking in this way, who can argue that caviar(鱼子酱), for example, is more valuable than a carrot grown with specialist knowledge?”Experimentation is extremely important to Navis. In the next five years, he hopes to open an outdoor restaurant. But for now, the most important thing is to continue focusing on how plants are being grown and the perennial system used in the Food Forest, reducing the need for replanting each season.28. What can we learn about Navis's restaurant?A. It is well received by its guests.B. It serves food with moving stories.C. It offers experimental food for free.D. It is known for its rare food sources.29. How is Ketelbrock Food Forest different from ordinary woods?A. It is a natural forest.B. Diverse plants coexist in it.C. Plants there take longer to grow.D. It provides safe food ingredients.30. What is the key element of fine dining according to Navis?A. Convenient locations.B. Expensive ingredients.C. Innovative menus.D. Fancy cooking techniques.31. What does “the perennial system” in the last paragraph probably refer to?A. The sustainable farming practice.B. Farming with proper use of chemicals.C. Natural farming without human intervention.D. An experimental farm for an outdoor restaurant.DMy father started learning French at 57, drawn by the potential benefits of bilingualism in delaying dementia (失智症). Now,20 years later, he's on his third teacher. Many people like my father have attempted to pick up a new language. But can this really boost brain health?According to experts, regularly using a new language brings cognitive(认知的) benefits. If you're trying to recall the right words in another language, your brain is forced to inhibit your mother tongue. This process, called cognitive inhibition, helps improve your brain function. Repeating this process makes your brain more resistant to diseases like dementia. The more you challenge your brain, the better it functions, even if your brain health starts to decline. However, evidence for the benefits of learning a second language in your 60s is weaker. Research by Dr. Leo Antoniou found that older Italians who took English lessons for four months didn't see any difference in their cognition scores, but people who didn't saw their scores decline. Prof. Diana Smith's 2023 studies found similar results.Researchers offered a few potential explanations for their disappointing results. One is that the participants were highly motivated volunteers, probably of high cognitive level for their age, making it hard to see any improvements. “When choosing participants, we have to be careful, are they really representative of the population?” said Dr. Judith Ware. Another is that the language interventions were perhaps too short. These studies have used language lessons that “were very different in their length and frequency,” said Prof. Laura Grossman. To Dr. Antoniou, the limited findings are not entirely surprising. No one would say that learning a new language for six months would be the same as having used two languages for your entire life. But he does think that languagelessons can provide cognitive benefits by being cognitively stimulating.Perhaps more important, Prof. Grossman said, learning another language offers other potential advantages, like traveling or connecting with new communities. My father, for example, has remained pen friends with his first teacher and traveled to France numerous times. And at 76, he's as sharp as ever.32. What happens in the process of “cognitive inhibition” ?A. Memory improves.B. Native language is held back.C. Dementia is cured.D. Brain health worsens.33. Which is a possible explanation for the disappointing research results?A. The intervention of the first language.B. The great length of the language course.C. The poor choice of research participants.D. The age difference of the research subjects.34. Whose opinion does the author support by mentioning his father's experience?A. Leo Antoniou's.B. Diana Smith's.C. Judith Ware's.D. Laura Grossman's.35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A. Is it never too late to learn a new language?B. Can learning a new language delay dementia?C. Why does my father start learning a new language?D. How does learning a new language benefit aging brain?第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Thekitten’s bright eyes and sad face had won her over. There was no way of finding his owner, so Kennon, a single woman aged 56, decided to keep him. She gave him a round of shots and fed him food mixed with medicines. He couldn’t move his back legs but soon started pulling himself forward with his front legs. The doctor named him Scooter and contacted a company that makes carts for disabled animals. Scooter took to his new wheels like a natural. One set of twins occurs every 70 births---some are identical and others are non-identical twins. Scientists have discovered a gene which affects this.We could ask, “Are our lives determined by our genes or our upbringing?”Scientists are learning more all the time, but it is certainly true that both are important in making us who we are.31. Our destination this hot morning is a concrete water tank that can be found just off the road.A UK organization helped to build it six years ago, and in the nearby village of Thapho, where clean drinking water is scarce, it has made a big difference. The underlined word ”scarce”in paragraph 1 most probably means_________.A. valuableB. rareC. infrequentD.missing37. His writing is brilliant and imaginative and flows with aself-confidence as sure as the words of a Shakespeare poem. Seuss was ahead of his time, and in this book the dawn of concern for environmental problems are shown as the Lorax “who speaks for the trees”battles against an evil businessman who wants to destroy the forest and make goods “which everyone needs”.It’s not only a warning of the heavy price of environmental destruction, written well before most people had thought to worry, but it’s also a smart analysis of consumer societies: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” This is of course a moral message, but not of the kind designed to persuade the youngsters into behavior that adults want.I could go on, but hey, it’s a birthday, and I’m sure you folks have some good toasts to raise for the party…41. Late 1960s.D. Late 1970s.45. Which of the following is true about Seuss?A. Many of the issues he discussed attracted greater concern in later years.B. He is widely considered as the twentieth-century Shakespeare.C. His books are more popular now than when they were first published.D. Most readers thought his ideas were difficult to understand.第二节信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)请阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

2020届广东省广州市高三普通高中毕业班综合测试(二)英语试题学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读理解We can all think of times when people didn’t make remembering easy. Directions given at machine-gun speed. New people introduced in a flood of names and handshakes. Whenever information is passed between people, it’s all too easy for it to go in one ear and straight outof the other. Thankfully, the opposite is also true. Look around you, and you’ll see parents who can get their children to remember exactly what they were told; advertisers who know how to imprint their sales messages on our brains. So, how do they do? Their secrets can be summed up in four simple words: focus, imagery, reasons and engagement.FOCUS means ensuring that the person you’re talking to can concentrate on learning. Choose your moment carefully. Check that they can properly hear or see the information. Communicate slowly and clearly enough for their memory to cope.IMAGERY helps information to stick. Do everything your can to make other people “see” the ideas you’re giving them. Add visual details to directions, and illustrate abstract concepts with metaphors.REASONS to remember help people to put in the mental effort. So, make it clear that your words are important, and be explicit about why. Maybe this information will save them time, protect them from embarrassment, or let them enjoy a particular experience or event.EMGAGEMENT requires you to ask questions. Point out links between new concepts and things listeners already know. Activate their senses, spark their curiosity, get them doing something physical, or simply make them laugh. The next time you’ve got an important message to pass on, put some of these techniques to the test. You’ll discover that there are benefits on both sides when you know how to FIRE people’s memories into action.1.What is the main purpose of the text?A.To report new research.B.To provide some advice.C.To explain a problem.D.To define some terms.2.How can you do to help a listener “focus” on what you are saying?A.Select the appropriate time to raise the topic.B.Do something humorous to get their attention.C.Make sure the information provided is correct.D.Speak as slowly and clearly as you possibly can.3.Explaining to listeners why your information is important is an example of ________. But first there’s something I have to do – The Ritual(惯例).I go to my trusted computer and start. I begin to type: Dear -- . Did your son marry Fiona? Is your mother still alive? Questions surge into my mind. For the next two hours I sit writing. About what I’ve been doing for the last year, my failing health, my increasing wealth and sometime difficult marriage. Then about my goals and ambitions. Will he be interested? Do I climb Mt. Kilimanjaro? Do I get that novel published? the one that’s been rejected more times than I carte to think about. Finally, it’s finished. 11:30 pm. I fill in the recipient’s name, print my letter, sign and address it and then seal it up with tape. I then delete the document and empty the trash folder – to avoid the possibility of temptation. That completes the ritual!I walk over to my “special box”. It contains ten long, white, thick envelopes, all with the same handwriting. I place the one I have just written in at the back and take out the one at the front. It’s dated 2019, and labelled “to be opened 31st December 2029”.The cycle is finally complete! I open it, trembling with anticipation. I begin to read, my eyes tearing up a little as I do so. He needed skilled cowboys to drive his herd of two thousand longhorn cattle to New Mexico to be sold. He couldn't offer high wages. He couldn't promise easy jobs or even nice weather. But he decided that decent, warm meals might entice men to work for him.In the mid-to-late 1800s, cattle drives sometimes took three to four months, and once the drive began, there were no stores for hundreds of miles. All the food and supplies needed for the trip were carried on two-wheeled carts. Usually, the cowboy's food was boring and unappetizing.Goodnight went to work and solved the problem. His invention of a mobile kitchen, the chuck wagon(四轮马车), got its name from the cowboy word for food, "chuck." Goodnight took an old army wagon and rebuilt it with Osage orange, a wood so tough that Indians usedit to make bows. The wagon's iron axles were stronger than the wooden ones found on standard wagons, and the wider wheels lasted longer. Besides food, coffee sugar and eating utensils, it held everything from first-aid supplies to needles and thread. It even contained cooking stove. The first chuck wagon was an instant success. Eighteen cowhands joined Goodnight and his partner, Oliver Loving, to drive the cattle to New Mexico for a handsome profit. The route they took—later called the Goodnight-Loving Trail—became one of the most heavily used cattle trails in the Southwest. The chuck wagon soon was the backbone of all successful cattle drives. Other ranchers created their own moving kitchens, and eventually the Studebaker Company produced chuck wagons that sold for $75 to $100 apiece, about $1,000 today. The chuck wagon was much more than a mobile kitchen. Sometimes called "the trail drive's mother ship," it was like a magnet that drew the men together. The wagon and the ground around it were the cowboy's home. There he enjoyed hot meals, a warm fire, and good companionship. He could also get a bandage, a haircut, or horse liniment for his sore muscles. And there, under the stars and around the chuck wagon, he crawled into his bedroll each night.8.Who does the underlined word “entice” in paragraph 1 mean?A.Inform B.DirectC.Enable D.Attract9.Why were cattle drives in the mid-to-late 1800s so tough ?A.All the cattle were carried on two-wheeled vehicles.B.Fresh food supplies were hard to find on the drive.C.There were not enough cowboys to drive the cattle.D.There was no place to store food and necessary supplies.10.What do we know about Goodnight’s chuck wagon from the text?A.It was stronger than the ordinary wagons.B.It was mainly used to provide first aid.C.It could be changed into a sleeping area.D.It was sold to other ranchers by Goodnight.11.What is the best title for the text?A.The Cowboys’ ProblemB.Goodnight-Loving TrailC.The Cowboys’ Home on WheelsD.Exciting Cattle Drives in the WestDepending on what language you speak, your eye perceives colours — and the world — differently than someone else. The human eye can physically perceive millions of colours. But we don’t all recognise these colours in the same way. Some people can’t see differences in colours — so called colour blindness — due to a defect or absence of the cells in the retina that are sensitive to high levels of light: the cones. But the distribution and density of these cells also varies across people with ‘normal vision’, causing us all to experience the same colour in slightly different ways.Language affects our colour perception too. Different languages and cultural groups also categorize colours differently. Some languages like Dani, spoken in Papua New Guinea, and Bassa, spoken in Liberia and Sierra Leone, only have two terms, dark and light. Dark roughly translates as cool in those languages, and light as warm. So colours like black, blue, and green are glossed as cool colours, while lighter colours like white, red, orange and yellow are glossed as warm colours. Other cultural groups have no word for “colours” at all.Remarkably, most of the world’s languages have five basic colour terms. As well as dark, light, and red, these languages typically have a term for yellow, and a term that refers to both blue and green. That is, these languages do not have separate terms for “green” and “blue” but use one term to describe both colours. Also, Russian, Greek, Turkish and many other languages have two separate terms for blue — one referring exclusively to darker shades, and one referring to lighter shades. The way we perceive colours can also change during our lifetime. Greek speakers, who have two fundamental colour terms to describe light and dark blue, are more likely to see these two colours as the same after living for long periods of time in the UK. There, these two colours are described in English by the same fundamental colour term: blue.Different languages can influence our perceptions in all areas of life, not only colour. Scientists are now investigating how different languages changes the way we perceive everyday objects. Ultimately, this happens because learning a new language is like giving our brain the ability to interpret the world differently.12.What is mainly discussed in paragraph 2?A.The medical causes of people’s colour blindness.B.The different types of colours that people can see.C.The physical causes of variation in people’s vision.D.The cultural reasons for differences in colour perception.13.What colours are commonly referred to using the same word by many language groups? A.Yellow and red.B.Warm and cold.C.Dark and light.D.Blue and green.14.What do we know about the Russian language?A.It classifies colours as either warm or cold.B.It has more than one word for the colour blue.C.It mainly describes objects in terms of their colour.D.It has only five basic terms to describe colours.15.Why does the author mention Greek speakers living in England?A.To illustrate how social context can affect our senses.B.To provide an example of cultural miscommunication.C.To highlight the variation in the words used to describe colour.D.To demonstrate how languages can combine to produce new words.二、七选五Tropical CyclonesHave you ever seen a TV weatherperson pointing to a large, white spiral of storm clouds spinning over the Earth on their video screen? If so, then you’ve gotten a small look at what the most powerful storm in the world looks like: a tropical cyclone (热带风暴).___16___ The warm air and water at the equator(赤道) rise into the atmosphere, cool off, and then sink back down. As this cycle repeats itself over and over again, the storm begins to grow and the winds around the storm begin to move faster.Depending on where a tropical cyclone is in the world, it is called either a hurricane, a typhoon, or a cyclone. If tropical cyclones move over the northwestern Pacific Ocean, they’recalled typhoons. ___17___ In the South Pacific or the Indian Ocean, they’re called cyclones. The center of a tropical cyclone is called the “eye”. ___18___ Most of the strong winds do not reach the eye of the storm, so the eye is the calmest part.___19___ A storm that is rated as a Category 1 is the weakest. A Category 5 tropical cyclone is the strongest, which has winds of over 300km per hour, can cause catastrophic damage.Once these storms come onto land, they no longer have the warm ocean water they need to grow larger. This means that they begin to grow weaker. This doesn’t stop them from causing a lot of damage before they go away. ___20___A.They still may produce strong rain and tornadoes.B.Tropical cyclones are categorised based on their strength.C.They withdraw as quickly as they arrive and leave the land untouched.D.The rest of the storm moves in a circle around the eye at incredibly high speeds. E.Tropical storms with wind speeds that reach 74 miles per hour are called hurricanes. F.Tropical cyclones start as tropical storms that form in warm ocean waters near the Earth's equator.G.Such storms moving over the northeastern Pacific or the Atlantic Ocean are termed hurricanes.三、完形填空In today's world, we find ourselves communicating more through online channels such as messaging, social media and video calls, often at the ___21___ of face-to-face dialogue. 2023年广州市普通高中毕业班综合测试二英语
2023年广州市普通高中毕业班综合测试二英语全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1My Big Sister's Big TestHi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 8 years old. I'm in 3rd grade at Guangzhou Elementary School. My big sister Meimei is 18 years old and just finished her last year of high school at Guangzhou No. 1 High School. She had to take a really big test called the 2023 Guangzhou High School Graduation Comprehensive Test 2 in English. It was a huge deal!Meimei studied so hard for months to get ready. Every night after dinner, she would go to her room and study English for hours and hours. She had these gigantic books filled with grammar rules, vocabulary words, reading passages, and practice tests. Sometimes she would read out loud and I could hear her from the living room going on and on in English. I didn't understand most of it but it sounded really difficult. My parents were always telling Meimei how important this test was for getting into a good university. They said her whole future depended on it. No pressure or anything! I felt really badfor her because the test seemed crazy hard and she was stressed out all the time. She barely had any free time to hang out with friends or watch TV shows. It was just study, study, study from morning until night.A few weeks before the test, Meimei started going to a special cram school at night and on weekends for extra tutoring. The classes were four hours long! She would come home looking like a zombie with huge bags under her eyes. Sometimes she would fall asleep at the dinner table because she was so exhausted. My parents didn't even get mad though, they just let her rest. The week before the test, the whole house was on lockdown. My parents made sure Meimei had zero distractions so she could concentrate fully on preparing. I wasn't allowed to make any noise when I got home from school. My little brother and I had to tiptoe around and communicate only in whispers and hand gestures. We couldn't watch TV, play video games, listen to music, or pretty much do anything fun. The atmosphere was super tense and serious. My mom triple-checked that Meimei had enough pencils, erasers, test booklets, snacks, and water for the big day. Finally the morning of the test arrived. My dad cooked Meimei's favorite breakfast to get her energized - jianbing from the best stall in our neighborhood. We all gave her words of encouragement and she looked confident but nervous. Then my parents drove her to the exam site at their old high school. I waved goodbye and wished her good luck, keeping my fingers crossed tightly behind my back. The test was scheduled to last from 8:30am until 5pm with just a short lunch break in between. That's over 8 hours of straight testing! The sections included listening, reading, writing, translation, and grammar/vocabulary. Just thinking about it makes my brain hurt. How could anyone possibly concentrate for that long? Meimei is basically a superhero in my eyes. While she was taking the exam, my parents and I tried our best to stay busy and distracted at home. But every few minutes, one of us would ask "I wonder what section she's on now?" or "Do you think she's struggling with anything?" We were all silently sending brain waves of encouragement and willpower in her direction. Finally, at around 5:15pm, we got a text from Meimei saying she just walked out of the exam room. We jumped up and down with excitement, then rushed out to pick her up. When she got inthe car, she had this dazed look on her face like she had just run a marathon. The first thing she said was "I'm so hungry, let's get dumplings!" We all laughed with relief that it was over.Over the next few days, every time I saw Meimei I would beg her "How did it go? What were the questions like? Do you think you passed?" She never liked to give me many details though. She just said she felt okay about it and kicked back to finally enjoy her summer vacation.A month later, the test scores were released online. We were all gathered around the computer constantly refreshing the page. When Meimei's score finally loaded, we shouted with joy - she got an amazing score in the top 10% of all test takers! My parents were SO proud and gave her the biggest hugs. We went out for hotpot that night to celebrate her hard work paying off.Meimei used her fantastic score to apply to the top universities in Guangzhou and across China. In the end, she chose an amazing school up north that offered her a huge scholarship. We were sad she'd be moving away from home, but so incredibly happy that she got to keep pursuing her academic dreams. The 2023 Guangzhou test may have been a monster, but Meimei squashed it!Now when I think ahead to taking that same test in 10 years, I feel a mixture of fear and excitement. It seems impossible, but Meimei showed me that with enough determination and perseverance, anything is possible. I just hope I inherited some of those strong study genes from her! One thing's for sure, our family will be stocking up on jianbing, dumplings, and hotpot to get me through it.篇2My Big Sister's Big TestMy big sister Jenny is in the last year of high school. She has to take a really big test called the 2023 Guangzhou High School Graduate Comprehensive Test 2 English exam. It's a super important test that she has to do really well on.Jenny has been studying like crazy for this test. She sits at her desk for hours and hours reading her English books and doing practice tests. Sometimes she gets really frustrated and throws her pencil down. "This is too hard!" she yells. Then my mom calms her down and tells her she is very smart and will do great if she keeps working hard.I try to help Jenny study too. Sometimes I quiz her on vocabulary words from her big English dictionary. She has tolearn words like "ambiguous" and "ephemeral" that I don't really understand. Other times I read passages out loud and she has to listen and answer questions about the main ideas and details. My reading isn't very good yet, so she has to help me with the big words.Jenny says the reading part of the test is the hardest. The passages are really long and have difficult vocabulary. She has to understand all the little details as well as get the overall gist. There are different types of questions too - some ask about specific facts, while others want her opinion on the main ideas. The writing section is hard too. For that part, Jenny has to write a whole essay in English! She has to make an argument and support it with good reasons and examples. Her essays have to be well-organized with good grammar and sophisticated vocabulary. No simple words like "fun" or "happy" allowed!Jenny complains a lot about how stressed she is over this test. "My whole future depends on it!" she tells me. She wants to get a really high score so she can get into a top university. Then she can study what she wants and get her dream job after graduating.I don't fully understand why this one test is so important. It just seems like a lot of pressure for a seventeen-year-old. Jennyhas always been a good student, but forcing kids to get perfect scores on arduous exams sounds stressful and maybe even a little unfair to me. Shouldn't there be more than just onemake-or-break test?Still, I'm trying my best to support and encourage Jenny while she prepares. I make her snacks like cucumber sandwiches (her favorite) to keep her going during long study sessions. I use my best handwriting to make her flashcards. And I tell her how smart and hardworking she is all the time.Jenny's test is coming up soon - just a couple more weeks away. The days are ticking down quickly. She has been studying day and night, settling for very little sleep. Our parents have been taking her practice tests and grading them. They keep telling Jenny that her score is improving, but she still doesn't feel ready. The night before the big test, none of us could sleep well. Jenny spent the whole night going over her notes one last time. I could see the fear and exhaustion in her eyes. Mom made her a special breakfast in the morning - fried eggs, sausages, and hash browns to give her energy. Then Dad drove her to the test center. When Jenny came home after the test, she looked like a weights had been lifted off her shoulders. She was smiling but still really tired. She said the reading passages were just as hard as she expected, but she felt okay about how she did. The writing went well too - she had practiced so many sample essays that the actual test one didn't seem too bad. Now there is nothing to do but wait several weeks for her score.Jenny keeps telling me that no matter how she did, this one test doesn't define her entire life. She said she worked her absolute hardest and that's what really matters. I'm proud of her for pushing herself and persevering through all the stress and fatigue. She is my role model for being dedicated and resilient.Part of me is a little sad that this big test caused my sister so much anxiety and sleepless nights. I worry that when it's my turn for high school, the pressure will be even more intense. But another part of me understands that this is just how things are - we have to prove ourselves through challenging tests and competitions. As long as篇3My Big TestHi friends! I'm Xiao Ming and I'm in 6th grade at Hongshan Elementary School in Guangzhou. I have a really important test coming up soon called the 2023 Guangzhou Senior High School Graduate Comprehensive Test II. All the older kids who are graduating from high school this year have to take it. Even though I'm still in elementary school, I've been learning a lot about this big exam!My older brother Jian is a senior at Guangzhou No. 1 High School and he's been studying really hard to get ready for the test. He says it's super important because his score will determine what university he can get into next year. The test has sections on Chinese, math, English, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, and politics. Wow, that's a lot of subjects! I can't even imagine having to know that much.Jian has been going to special cram schools and doing practice tests for months to prepare. I've seen some of the practice materials and they look incredibly difficult, with really long reading passages and complex math problems. No way could I handle that level yet! I'm just focusing on my times tables and reading simple stories. The English section in particular seems crazy hard from what Jian has shown me. There are listening comprehension questionswhere they play recordings of conversations or lectures and you have to answer questions about them. The reading has passages that look like they're from university textbooks on subjects like economics and philosophy. And then there's a writing section where you have to write essays analyzing different topics critically. I can barely write a couple paragraphs without getting stuck, never mind a whole essay like that!My parents keep telling Jian how crucial this test is and that his entire future depends on it. No pressure or anything! They remind him about it constantly and have banned video games or any fun activities until after the exam. I don't know how he doesn't have a nervous breakdown. I'd be so stressed out if the weight of an important test like that was totally on my shoulders.Jian says the competition is intense too, since there are limited spots at the top universities in Guangzhou and across China. His classmates are all trying to outscore each other to get into the best schools. It makes me anxious just thinking about being in that kind of high-stakes environment. Luckily as a 6th grader I can still just focus on learning and having fun for now.The actual test lasts for two full days in early June. Jian will have to go to a special test center and just grind through hours and hours of extremely difficult questions. I can't even imaginehaving to concentrate like that for so long on such hard material. My little brain would be absolutely fried after just a couple hours.Jian has been trying to stay positive and keep reminding himself of his goal, which is to get into a top university's business program. He wants to eventually work for a big international company. I really admire his drive and perseverance through this stressful process. I don't know if I would have the fortitude to push through something so challenging and mentally exhausting. His test is coming up so soon and I can see how antsy he's getting. Jian has had this date circled on our calendar for months. Sometimes I catch him just sitting and staring at it, hopefully not paralyzed by fear! I'm going to draw him an encouraging picture to make him laugh and relax a little before the big days. After the two grueling test days, it will take about a month for Jian's scores to come back. The wait during that period is probably going to be unbearable for him and my parents. They're all going to be tying themselves in knots wondering how he did and what his future options will be. Fingers crossed he gets the results he needs!Once Jian does get his scores back, that will determine what university he applies to for the following year. His scores need tobe high enough to meet the cut-off for his dream business programs at places like Sun Yat-sen University or Jinan University. Hopefully all his hard work and sacrifice pays off so he can go wherever he wants.I'm really proud of how seriously Jian has taken this huge exam. I know I'd be a nervous wreck if I had that much riding on a single test at my age. The 2023 Guangzhou Senior High School Graduate Comprehensive Test II seems like篇4The 2023 Graduation Test Was Really Hard!Hi diary! It's me again, Little Xiao Ming. I'm 10 years old and just finished 4th grade at Guangzhou No. 3 Primary School. I had a crazy weekend because my big brother Xiao Wang had to take the really important 2023 Guangzhou High School Graduation Test. He's 18 years old and just finished his last year of high school at Guangzhou No. 18 High School. The graduation tests are hugeeee and my brother has been super stressed out studying for them for months! There are actually a few different tests he has to take, like math, Chinese, and English. But the one this weekend was the English test and it was sooooo long! My brother said the Englishtest had listening, reading, writing, translation, and even an oral part where he had to talk to the teachers. He was really nervous about that speaking section.I tried to help my brother practice his English as much as I could. Even though I'm just a little kid, my English is pretty good because my mom is an English teacher. She's always speaking to me in English and helping me learn. So in the weeks before the test, I would read English stories and passages to my brother to get him ready for the reading part. We'd talk about the stories after and he'd have to answer my questions. My brother said it was great practice! For the writing part, I had my brother write a bunch of practice essays and letters. Then I would circle any mistakes I could find and make him re-write them perfectly. He had to practice different types of writing like argumentation, narration, and expositions. My favorites were the narratives because my brother would write really funny, imaginative stories! To get ready for the speaking part, my brother and I would have conversations in English. I'd ask him questions and he'd have to respond with long, detailed answers without stopping. He'd also have to describe pictures and things around the house. In the beginning it was pretty awkward and unnatural for him,but he got much better over time. My mom said his fluency and vocabulary really improved, which was great for the test. The listening was probably my brother's weakest area, so we spent a ton of time on that. I found all these cool English audio books, videos, songs, and movies online. Every night, we'd listen or watch them together and my brother would have to summarize and answer questions after. It was kind of like watching a movie, but he had to pay such close attention that it wasn't much fun for him!My parents were so nervous for my brother leading up to the test day. They kept telling him how important it was and that his entire future depended on it. I could tell my brother was feeling super stressed and pressured. He studied literally day and night, taking breaks only to eat and sleep a little. I tried my best to help him practice and drill everything, but I also wanted him to relax once in a while. I'd bring him snacks or put on a funny movie to give his brain a break sometimes. Finally, the morning of the big English test arrived! My brother woke up at 5am to get ready. He hardly ate any breakfast because he was so nervous. Before he left, I gave him a big hug for good luck. The test was scheduled to start at 8am and go allthe way until 5pm with just a lunch break! That's like an entire day of testing...I can't even imagine. After an eternal篇5The Big Test for Big KidsHiya! My name is Lily and I'm in 5th grade. Today I wanna tell you all about this super important test that my big brother Jimmy had to take. It's called the 2023 Guangzhou High School Graduation Comprehensive Test 2, but we just call it "The Big Test" 'cause it's sooooo looong and difficult!Jimmy's a senior in high school now, can you believe it? Seems like just yesterday we were playing pirates in the backyard. But now he's all grown up and getting ready to graduate. Before he can get his diploma though, he had to take The Big Test. From what I understand, The Big Test covers all the subjects the big kids have to learn in high school - math, science, history, Chinese, and of course, English! Jimmy said the English part was really tough since they had to write essays, analyze stories and poems, and even translate some weird scientific passages. Yuck! I'm just glad I don't have to worry about that stuff for a while. But even though it was hard, Jimmy studied super duper hard for months and months. He made a schedule and everything! Our parents got him a tutor and he would go to the library after school to study in one of those private little rooms. Sometimes I would go bug him just to be annoying, but he would always chase me away. Hehehe. The night before The Big Test, Jimmy was soooo nervous. We could all tell 'cause he was pacing around the house and mumbling to himself like he was going crazy. Mom made him his favorite dumplings hoping it would help him relax, but I'm not sure it worked. He went to bed pretty late, tossing and turning all night. Finally, the big day arrived! Jimmy had to get up at like 5am which is crazytown if you ask me. I was still fast asleep, dreaming about exploring ancient pirate ship wrecks. Mom made Jimmy a big breakfast to give him energy - eggs, sausage, toast, you name it! Then my big strong dad gave him a bonecrushing hug and said "Go get 'em, tiger!" I thought Jimmy was gonna puke from being so nervous. The test location was at Jimmy's high school, but there were students from all over Guangzhou there to take The Big Test. Jimmy said it was SO CROWDED and everyone looked just asfreaked out as he felt. They had to put their phones and bags in lockers first so no one could cheat. Smart! Then they were led into the gym where they had several HOURS to take the first part of The Big Test on math and science. Could you imagine having to sit still and focus that long?? I'd go bonkers! Jimmy said about halfway through he started getting major brain freeze and had to stick his head out the window for some fresh air. Yikes! After a quick greasy lunch from the cafeteria (my fave!), it was time for the next few hours of The Big Test on history, geography, and Chinese. Jimmy's always been a genius at those subjects though, so he felt a bit better. I remember seeing him mouth the words "I got this" under his breath as he walked back into the gym. You go, bro!But then came the part Jimmy was dreading most...the English section! He had to write a major essay, analyze two poems and a short story, PLUS translate scientific and business documents. That's like every English student's worst nightmare rolled into one! Jimmy looked like a zombie when he finally stumbled out of there after the English portion.Thankfully, The Big Test was finally over and Jimmy could finally RELAX! Sort of. He still had to wait over a month for hisscore results which must have been torture. In the meantime, we took him out for his favorite pizza to celebrate surviving The Big Test. My bro seriously deserved all the cheesy bread sticks after that!At last, the scores came in the mail. We were all holding our breaths as Jimmy opened the envelope with shaky hands. His face...broke into the BIGGEST smile ever! He passed The Big Test with flying colors and could finally graduate from high school! We all dogpiled onto Jimmy, giving him millions of hugs and kisses. I was so proud of him for working his butt off for The Big Test! And that's the story of The Big Test that all the seniors had to take this year. It was NO joke - a huge challenge filled with lots of blood, sweat, and maybe a few tears too. But Jimmy made it through like a champ and now he's off to university next year to get his degree. Scary to think I'll be in his shoes one day having to take that massive test too! But if my bro could slay The Big Test, I suppose with enough hard work, I can too. Right?Anyway, that's all from me! Thanks for listening to me blab about Jimmy's crazy test. If you'll excuse me, I have a very important pirate ship to go explore...arrrr篇6My Big Sis Takes a Big TestMy big sister Meili is in her last year of high school. That's called the senior year. She has to take a lot of really important tests to get ready for college. The biggest test of all is called the Guangzhou High School Graduation Comprehensive Test. It's a huge deal! The test has two parts. Part one was back in January. That was just for Chinese, math, and English. Meili said the English part was pretty hard, but she had been studying a lot so she felt okay about it. The second part is coming up next month in June. That's the really big one that she is nervous about.Part two of the test covers all different subjects - history, politics, geography, physics, chemistry, biology, and even technology. Meili has to know SO much information for all those topics. She has been studying like crazy, making flashcards, reading her notes over and over, and working on practice tests every night after dinner.Sometimes I try to quiz Meili on stuff to help her study. I'll ask her random questions like "What's the capital of Australia?" or "Who discovered electricity?" If she gets them right, I give hera high five. If she gets them wrong, I tease her a little bit but then help her remember the right answer. I'm a pretty good study buddy!Meili takes breaks from studying to teach me some English words and phrases. She says it will give me a head start before I have to take the big tests someday. She taught me how to say "My pencil is broken" and "I'm hungry" and "Where is the bathroom?" Those will definitely come in handy!Last week, Meili had to practice writing a whole essay for the English part of the test. The topic was about whether schools should have uniforms or not. Meili's essay said uniforms are better because they stop students from judging each other over clothes and make everyone equal. But she also wrote about the downside that uniforms can be uncomfortable and boring. After she finished, Meili asked me to score her essay from 1 to 6. I gave her a 6 because her writing was awesome! The night before the big test, our whole family is going to make Meili's favorite dumplings for dinner. We'll cheer her on and tell her she's been working so hard and she's sure to do great. I know my big sis is one of the smartest kids in Guangzhou, so I'm not too worried. But I'll still give her a big hug and wish her good luck before she goes.Win or lose, we're all proud of how much effort Meili has put into getting ready for this test. It's going to be a huge weight off her shoulders when it's finally over. Then she'll be able to relax, enjoy her last couple months of high school, and get ready for the next big adventure - college! I'll miss her giving me English lessons, but I know she has to move on to the next chapter of her life. Ganbatte Meili!。

All hiccups start here. The diaphragm almost always ___18 (work) perfectly--- it pulls down when you breathe in to help pull air into the lungs __19 it moves up when you breathe out to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes upset, and when ___ 20 happens, it pushes up in an irregular way , making your breath come out differently ____21 how it normally does. When this irregular breath hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup. Things ___22 bother the diaphragm include eating too quickly or too much, stomachaches or feeling nervous. If you want to know ___23 to get rid of hiccups, here are some "cures", ___24 (breathe) into a paper bag is one method some people use. Others think taking a mouthful of water is the way to become hiccup-free. Sugar under your tongue might also drive away the hiccups. And maybe the most famous25 (treat), having someone scare you , also helps beat the hiccups.三、阅读理解创作;朱本晓AA black and white kitten with a broken back lay on animal doctor Betsy Knenon's examination table. Scooter took to his new wheels like a natural. “Kitty,〞she murmured as she began to talk to创作;朱本晓him. Amazed, Kennon turned to the doctor--- and saw that she was in tears. Thecat had engineered a small miracle.Today Scooter spends about ten hours a month working with patients who are recovering from strokes and injuries. Again and again, Kennon watches as her cat provides hope and comfort. As one patient who’d lost her leg in a car accident said, “If he can do it, so can I.〞26. From Paragraph 1, we know that ___________.A. the do g’s owner was a stranger to KennonB. the cat had several bite marks on its bodyC. the dog was extremely cruel to the catD. who actually injured the cat was unknown27. The underlined phrase “put down〞in Paragraph 2 most probably means___________.A. hurtB. killedC. refusedD. Patients feel sympathy forhim.创作;朱本晓C. People are amused by his appearance.D.He has the ability to cure theill.BWe each have a unique genetic(基因的,遗传的) make-up. One set of twins occurs every 70 births---some are identical and others are non-identical twins. Genes also influenceour eating habits. Identical twins brought up apart often like to eat at the same创作;朱本晓time of day and feel full after eating the same amount. Scientists have discovered a gene which affects this.We could ask, “Are our lives determined by our genes or our upbringing?〞Scientists are learning more all the time, but it is certainly true that both are important in making us who we are.31. According to the passage, __________.A. one in 70 twins are genetically identicalB. non-identical twins are usually not of the same sexC. twins separated at birth behave exactly the same创作;朱本晓D. identical twins are genetically the same34. Which of the following is most affected by experience according the passage?A. Eating habits.B. Eye-sight.C. Pain resistance.D. Marriage patterns.35. What does the underlined “this〞in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. But with foreign investors创作;朱本晓wanting to buy up land, local people will have to be moved to make room for them. Poverty will not be history in Laos within the next decade, but with small steps forward and a bit of outside help, the country could find itself out of the UN’s least-developed category by 2021.36. The underlined word 〞scarce〞in paragraph 1 most probably means_________.A. valuableB. rareC. infrequentD. missing37. What is putting pressure on the local supply of clean water?A. Dust from the road is making the water dirtier.B. There are too many taps accessing the water.C. The population of the area is growing fast.D. The coming summer will dry up rivers and lakes.创作;朱本晓38. Readers ride his characteristic rhythm with an effortless joy that cannot be matched by any other modern writer: You have brains in your headYou have feet in your shoesYou can steer yourself any direction you choose创作;朱本晓And will you succeed?Yes indeed, yes indeed!Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed.Seuss’s brilliant cartoons and clever words make his books a delight for adults but they appeal most to children of course. His stories teach kids moral lessons but in indirect and entertaining ways. The first Seuss book I was given was The Lorax, written just as the 60s were becoming the 70s. Seuss was ahead of his time, and in this book the dawn of concern for environmental problems are shown as the Lorax “who speaks for the trees〞battles against an evil businessman who wants to destroy the forest and make goods “which everyone needs〞.It’s not only a warning of the heavy price of environmental destruction, written well before most people had thought to worry, but it’s also a smart analysis of consumer societies: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.〞This is of course a moral message, but not of the kind designed to persuade the youngsters into behavior that adults want.I could go on, but hey, it’s a birthday, and I’m sure you folks have some good toasts to raise for the party…41. What’s the purpose of this passage?A. To introduce Dr. Seuss’s life.B. To analyse Dr. Seuss’s books.C. To describe Dr. Seuss’s writing style.D. To celebrate Dr. Seuss’s achievements.42. Why does the author include Dr. Seuss’s poem?A. To encourage readers to use their brains and choose their own way.创作;朱本晓B. Late 1960s.D. Late 1970s.45. Which of the following is true about Seuss?A. Many of the issues he discussed attracted greater concern in later years.B. He is widely considered as the twentieth-century Shakespeare.C. His books are more popular now than when they were first published.D. Most readers thought his ideas were difficult to understand.第二节信息匹配〔一共5小题;每一小题2分,满分是10分〕请阅读以下应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

Without saying a word, as if they bo th understood that this was a secret they didn’t want to share with anyone, they slipped into the alley, where no one could see them look inside"There's got to be a million dollars here! "Charlie blurted out, when they saw the pile of hundred- dollar bills. Amy, the more realistic of the two, did a quick estimate, thumbing through the wad of cash. "More like thousands” she said, her voice shaking in disbelief. They'd found the wallet in a flowerbed by the sidewalk, when Charlie dropped his cell phone while he was trying to talk and eat a slice of pepperoni pizza at the same time. Amy stuffed the wallet into her backpack and pulled Charlie along by his elbow toward her house. As they rushed toward Viceroy Avenue, they talked excitedly about what they could do with the money-buy gifts for parents and friends, get new clothes, travel to the rainforest in Costa Rica, and adopt a whale. It looked like all of their dreams would come true. For the last block, however, they didn’t talk. Each began to suspect that the other one was silently adding to the list of things they could buy. They finally reached Amy s house, but instead of going inside, they walked around the house to the back porch. They opened the wallet and counted the money into piles of ten. The total wasS2400- more money than either of them had ever seen. Then they both started talking at once. "I wonder who lost it "Their moods shifted, sinking from the high of being rich for fifteen minutes to resigning themselves to what they must do next. In this article Professors Dennis Bramble and Daniel Lieberman suggest that being able to run was the necessary condition for the development of our species which enabled us to come down from the trees. This challenges traditional scientific thinking, which claims that the distinctive, upright body form of modern humans has come about as a result of the ability to walk, and that running is simply a by-product of walking. Furthermore, humans have usually been regarded as poor runners compared to such animals as dogs, horses or deer. However, this is only true if we consider running at high speed, especially over short distances. But when it comes to long-distance running, humans do astonishingly well. They can keep a steady pace for many kilometres, and their overall speed is at least the same as that of horses or dogs Bramble and Lieberman examined 26 physical features found in humans. One of the most interesting of these is the nuchal ligament(项韧带). When we run, this ligament prevents our head from moving back and forth or from side to side. Therefore, we are able to run with steady heads, held high. The nuchal ligament is not found in any other surviving primates, such as apes and monkeys. Then there are our Achilles tendons (跟腱) at the backs of our legs, which connect our calf muscles toour heel bones — and which have nothing to do with walking. When we run, these tendons behave like springs, helping to push us forward. Furthermore, we have low, wide shoulders virtually disconnected from our skulls(颅骨), a physical development which allows us to run more efficiently. But what evolutionary advantage is gained from being good long-distance runners? Perhaps it permitted early humans to obtain food more effectively. "What these features and facts appear to be telling us is that running evolved in order for our direct ancestors to compete with other meat-eating animals for access to the protein neededto grow the big brains that we enjoy today," says Lieberman. Some scientists put forward the theory that early humans chased animals for great distances in order to exhaust them before killing them."Research on the history of humans' ability to move has traditionally been controversial, " says Lieberman. "At the very least, I believe this theory will motivate many researchers to reevaluate and further investigate how humans learned to run and walk and why we are built the way we are. "28. In paragraph 1, what do the two professors suggest about humans' ability to run?A. It is an evolutionary by-product of walking.B. It helps to form people's ability to climb trees.C. It has played an important role in human evolution.D. It has not been adequately studied by scientists before.29. What is true about the physical characteristics examined by the professors?A. Achilles tendons assist people to walk long distances.B. The human skull helps people to run more efficiently.C. people's shoulders allow them to look from side to side.D. The nuchal ligament enables people to hold their head steady.30. According to paragraph 3, scientists believe that early humans_________.A. always came across dangerous situations in lifeB. ran after animals for long distances when huntingC often failed to find food because they couldn't run fastD developed their hunting skills by running long distances31. Professor Lieberman thinks the new theory will _________.A completely explain how running developedB revolutionize the theory of human evolutionC. encourage more in-depth studies on the topicD. be widely supported within the scientific communityDScientists have solved the mystery of whythe overwhelming majority of mammoth fossils(化石)are male.Much like wild elephants today, young maleIce Age mammoths probably travelled aroundalone and more often got themselves into riskysituations where they were swept into rivers, or fell through ice or into mud, lakes or sinkholes that preserved their bones for thousands of years, scientists say.Females, on the other hand, travelled in groups led by an older matriarch who knew the landscape and directed her group away from danger."Without the benefit of living in a herd led by an experienced female, male mammoths had a much higher risk of dying in natural traps such as mud holes, rock cracks and lakes, "said co-author Love Dalen of the Swedish Museum of Natural History in a report published on Thursday in the journal Current Biology. The study used genetic data to determine the sex of 98 woolly mammoth fossils in Siberia Researchers found that 69% of the samples were male, a heavily unbalanced sex ratio, assuming that the sexes were fairly even at birth "We were very surprised because there was no reason to expect a sex bias in the fossil record," said first author Patricia Pecnerova, also of the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Therefore, researchers believe that something about the way they lived influenced the way they died. Most bones, tusks, and teeth from mammoths and other Ice Age animals haven't survived," explained Dalen"It is highly likely that the remains that are found in Siberia these days have been preserved because they have been buried, and thus protected from weathering."These giant, tusked plant eaters disappeared about 4,000 years ago. While there is no scientific agreement about the causes of their disappearance from the planet, most believe that climate change, excessive hunting by humans and the spread of other animals into mammoth feeding grounds were influential factors.32. The underlined word "matriarch" in paragraph 3 means _______.A. figure headB. female leaderC experienced animal D. mature mammoth33. Why do the majority of mammoth fossils come from male animals?A. Scientists find it easier to study male fossilised bones.B. There were more male mammoths in comparison to femalesC Male mammoths were better able to adapt to the changing circumstances.D. Male mammoths more frequently died in places where fossils could form.34. Which of the following is suggested as a reason for mammoths dying out?A. The increasing competition for food.B. The cooling of the earth's temperature.C. The disappearance of male mammoths.D The risky behaviour of younger mammoths.35. What is the text type of the passage?A. A newspaper article.B.
