They are men and women recognized for shaping our nation’s consciousness and development as well as the lives of those who admire them. Yet, some people say that ours is an age where true heroes and heroines are hard to come by, where the very idea of heroism is something beyond us - an artifact of the past. Some maintain, that because the Cold War is over and because America is at peace, our age is essentially an unheroic one. Furthermore, the overall crime rate is down, poverty has been eased by a strong and growing economy, and advances continue to be made in medical science.Cultural icons are hard to define, but we know them when we see them. They are people who manage to go beyond celebrity (明星), who are legendary, who somehow mange to become mythic. But what makes somefigures icons and others mere celebrities? That’s hard to answer. In part, their lives have the quality of a story to tell. For instance, the beautiful young Diana Spencer who at 19 married a prince, renounced marriage and the throne, and died at the moment she found true love. Good looks certainly help. So does a special indefinable charm, with the help of the media. But nothing confirms an icon more than a tragic death -such as Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Whate ver you do, don’t stay in a place full of overseas students, especially if they come from our country. This is fatal. Don’t believe all the stories you hear about how unfriendly the English are. It’s just that many of them are a little shy, and they have this idea about minding their own business. In a train, or restaurant, for example, or anywhere else they will talk to you; but you must break the ice first. Then see them talk! Any subject will do--the weather, their dogs, food. Pardon me, not any subject. Don’t be nosy (爱打听的)about their private life, their incomes and expenditures, or their ages. These English worship (尊重) their privacy. Avoid religion too. The best place to talk is in pubs, but as you are a girl, go with someone else, and don’t go to the p ubs in Piccadilly, Leicester Square and so on. Find one near where you are living and go there regularly. Someone’s bound to talk to you. Oh! Make sure to let them see you are a foreigner. Pretend to have difficulty in ordering, or something. That should be easy enough.(1)、The writer suggests that they had better not stay in a place where there are a lot of young people.单选题A. A. A:TB. B. (阅读理解题)Using a public telephone may well be one of the minor irritations of life, demanding patience, determination and a strong possibility of failure, together on occasion with considerable unpopularity. The hopeful caller (shall we call him George?) waits till six o’clock in the eveningto take advantage of the so-called “cheap rates” for a long-distance call. The telephone box, with two broken panes of glass in the side, stands at the junction of two main roads with buses, lorries and cars roaring past. It is pouring with rain as George joins a queue of four depressed-looking people. Time passes slowly and seems to come to a standstill while the person immediately before George carries on an endless conversation, pausing only to insert another coin every minute or so.Eventually the receiver is replaced and the caller leaves the box. George enters and picks up one of the directories inside, only to discover that someone unknown has torn out the very page he needs. Nothing for it but to dial directory Enquiries, wait patiently for a reply down the number given. At last George can go ahead with his call. Just as he is starting to dial, however, the door opens and an unpleasant-looking face peers in with the demand, “Can’t you hurry up?” Ignoring such barbarity, George continues to dial and his unwanted companion withdraws. At last he hears the burr-burr of the ringing tone, immediately followed by rapid pips demanding his money, but he is now so upset that he knocks down the coins he has placed ready on the top of the box. Having at last located them, he dials again: the pips are repeated and he hastily inserts the coins. A cold voice informs him, “Grand Hotel, Chalfont Wells.”“I’ve an urgent message for a Mr. Smith who is a guest in your hotel. Could you put me through to him? I’m afraid I don’t know his room number.”The response appears less than enthusiastic and a long long silence follows. George inserts more coins. Then the voice informs him, “I’ve been trying to locate Mr. Smith but the hall porter reports having seen him leave about a minute ago.”Breathing heavily, George replaces the receiver, just as the knocking on the door starts again.5. ( 单选题 ) St. Valentine’s Day is a holiday for __________. (本题0.0分)A、people celebrating the new year’s comingB、 people fooling othersC、 people getting a family reunionD、 people expressing love to their lovers 学生答案:D标准答案:D解析:得分:010. (阅读理解题)February 14th is a complicated but interesting holiday. First of all, St. Valentine’s Day is not a holiday from work. No one gets a day off. On Valentine’s Day people usually send romantic cards to someone they love or want to be loved by. The cards are called “valentines”. They are very colorful, often decorated with hearts, flowers, or birds, and have humorous or sentimental verses printed inside. The basic message of the verse is always “Be My Valentine”, “Be My Sweet Heart” or “Lover”.A valentine is often anonymous, or sometimes signed “Guess who”. The person receiving it has to guess who sent it. This can lead to interesting speculation. And that’s half the fun of valentines. One of the symbols of St. Valentine’s Day is the Roman god of Love, called Cupid. Cupid is often printed on the card; he is a winged infant, not wearing anything, poised to shoot his arrow into a heart. He would shoot an arrow of love into a person’s heart to make the person fall in love immediately, maybe with the first person to come along. Sometimes one arrow would go through two hearts, holding them together. So on February 14th not only do we have pictures of the Christian St. Valentine but we also have pictures of the non-Christian Cupid, the Roman god of Love. But it is from the Christians that we get the stories about St. Valentine’s Day that most people have come to believe. One story is about a Christian man whose name sounded something like “Valentine.”He lived around AD 250. At that time the Roman Emperor, Claudius II, refused to allow any Roman soldiers to get married for any reason whatsoever. Christian couples came to Valentine to be married. So Valentine would marry them in a Christian way. He was discovered and put in prison by the Emperor. One tradition says that he wrote notes to his friends by marking on leaves and then throwing them out the window of his prison. And the leaves were shaped like a heart.11. ( 单选题 ) Thanksgiving Day is originally celebrated by people for __________. (本题0.0分)A、 healthB、 freedomC、 harvestD、 safety学生答案:C标准答案:C解析:得分:016. (阅读理解题)Thanksgiving is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November. The month of November is in autumn, the main season for harvesting crops. The writer O. Henry called Thanksgiving the one holiday that is purely American. It is not a religious holiday. But it has spiritual meaning.Thanksgiving began with the first European settlers in America. They gathered their crops, celebrated and gave thanks for the food.Tradition says Pilgrim settlers from England celebrated the first Thanksgiving in 1621. There is evidence that settlers in other parts of America held earlier Thanksgiving celebrations. But the Pilgrims’ Thanksgiving story is the most popular. The Pilgrims were religious dissidents who fled oppression in England. They went first to the Netherlands. Then they left that country to establish a colony in North America. The Pilgrims landed in 1620 in what later became known as Plymouth, Massachusetts.Their voyage across the Atlantic Ocean was difficult. Their first months in America were difficult, too. About one hundred Pilgrims landed just as autumn was turning to winter. During the cold months that followed, about half of them died. When spring came, the Pilgrims began to plant crops. An American Indian named Squanto helped them. When summer ended, the Pilgrims had a good harvest of corn and barley. There was enough food to last through the winter. The Pilgrims decided to hold a celebration to give thanks for their harvest. Writings from that time say Pilgrim leader William Bradford set a date late in the year. He invited members of a nearby Indian tribe to take part. There were many kinds of food to eat. The meal included wild birds such as ducks, geese and turkeys. That thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.As the American colonies grew, many towns and settlements held thanksgiving or harvest celebrations.17. 北大16秋《大学英语3-第五组》在线作业一、阅读理解(共10题,每题2分,共20分)请阅读以下文章,回答文章后的五个小题。
每个小题只有一个最佳选项。
1).As any middle-class parent knows, unpaid work experience can give youngsters a valuable introduction to a secure job. The government has recognized it too, abandoning rules in 2011 that had formerly stopped 16- to 24-year-olds from doing unpaid work while claiming unemployment benefit. But moving from that to forcing them to work without pay in order to collect these benefits has proved a big step.More than one million young people in Britain are unemployed, the highest number since the mid-1980s. Keen both to cut the welfare bill and to avoid the depressed future wages that may result from early unemployment, the government has introduced an ambitious program of reform to get youngsters off welfare and into work. A key part of it is ensuring that no one gets benefit from the government for long; ministers are keen to avoid what happened after the early-1980s recession (衰退), when unemployment continued in some parts of the country for a long time after the economy began to improve. To help young people into work, ministers had persuaded lots of employers, including bakery chains, bookshops, and supermarkets, to take on unemployed youths, who receive work experience but no pay, with the prospect of a proper job for those who shine. Some 35,000 youngsters participated last year; half found paid work soon after finishing the scheme. The idea of getting young adults used to showing up for work is popular with voters: according to a survey published in February, about 60% of people support the program. Equally attractive was the option of compelling them to work: under the existing arrangements youngsters could choose whether or not to accept a place, but if they dropped out after the end of the first week, they stood to lose up to two weeks’ benefits.Yet the scheme has also polarized (两极分化的) opinion: a third of people are consistently opposed. Following a noisy “Right to Work”campaign that accused employers of co-operating secretly with the government in “forced labor”, several firms dropped out of the program. To prevent this from getting worse, Chris Grayling, an employment minister, admitted that young people could leave their work experience at any time without being punished for doing so. This not only halted the flight of employers (for now, at least) but also enabled him to announce that new firms have agreed to take part in the program.1. According to the passage, young people in Britain____.A. are used to showing up for workB. value unpaid work very muchC. are always opposed to unpaid workD. could learn something about job security through unpaid work2. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?A. Most voters support the government’s effort to help young people to find work.B. Some people protest against the g overnment’s attempt to force young people to work.C. There are more than one million young people who tookpart in the program.D. There are more than one million young people who are jobless.3. According to the author, the British government is trying to ___ .A. punish young people if they are not cooperating with itB. reform the unemployed youngstersC. avoid the economic slowdownD. reduce welfare spending4. The word “shine” in Paragraph 3 means “___”.A. do wellB. reflect lightC. look happyD. produce light5. Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A. Enjoy Work Without PayB. Can Work, Won’t WorkC. Should Work, Shouldn’t PlayD. Hate Work or Love Work2).The city has always been an engine of intellectual life, from the 18th-century cafes of London, where citizens gathered to discuss chemistry and politics, to the Left Bank bars of modern Paris, where Picasso talked about modem art. Without the metropolis, we might not have had the great art of Shakespeare. And yet, city life isn't easy. Now scientists have begun to examine how the city affects the brain, and the results are depressing. Just being in an urban environment, they have found, impairs (损害) our basic mental processes. After spending a fewminutes on a crowded city street, the brain is less able to hold things in memory, and suffers from reduced self-control. While it's long been recognized that city life is exhausting, this new research suggests that cities actually dullour thinking, sometimes dramatically so.One of the main forces at work is a complete lack of nature, which is surprisingly beneficial for the brain. Studies have demonstrated, for instance, that hospital patients recover more quickly when they can see trees from their windows, and that women living in public housing are better able to focus when their apartments overlook a lawn. Even these glimpses of nature improve brain performance, it seems, because they provide a mental break from the urban life. This research arrives just as humans cross an important milestone (里程碑). For the first time in history, the majority of people live in cities. Instead of inhabiting wide-open spaces, we're crowded into concrete jungles, surrounded by traffic and millions of Strangers. In recent years, it's become clear that such unnatural surroundings have important implications for our mental and physical health, and can powerfully alter how we think. This research is also leading some scientists to dabble (涉足) in urban design, as they look for ways to make the city less damaging to the brain. The good news is that even slight alterations, such as planting more trees in the inner city or creating urban parks with a greater variety of plants, can significantly reduce the negative side effects of city life. The mind needs nature, and even a little bit can be a big help.6. Which of the following is the main idea of this passage?A. The city inspires talented people.B. The city hurts your brain.C. The city has many pleasures and benefits.D. The city seriously affects the natural balance.7. The word “metropolis” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to ___.A. citizenB. natureC. cityD. stress8. People have just come to realize that___.A. human attention is a scarce resourceB. city life can make people very tiredC. the city is an engine of intellectual lifeD. an urban environment is damaging to the brain9. What is the factor mentioned in the third paragraph that helps the hospital patients recover more quickly?A. Nature.B. Better treatment.C. Experienced doctors.D. Good medicine.10. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Different aspects (方面) of an urban environment, such as the crowded streets, can lead to an increase in self-control.B. Small changes in urban design, cannot reduce the negative side effects of city life.C. For the first time in history, the earth's population is more urban than rural.D. 一、阅读理解(共10题,每题2分,共20分)请阅读以下文章,回答文章后的五个小题。
每个小题只有一个最佳选项。
1).It seems like every day there’s some new research about whether our favorite drinks are good for us. One day, science says a glass of red wine a day will help us live longer. The next day, maybe not. It seems journalists are pretty interested in wine research and the same might be said for coffee. Now,there has been a lot of research into whether coffee is good for our health.“The results have really been mixed,”admits Neal Freedman who led the coffee study and published his findings in a medical journal recently. “There’s been some evidence that coffee might increase the risk of certain diseases and there’s also been maybe more recent evidence that coffee may protect against other disease s as well.”Freedman and his colleagues undertook the biggest study yet to look at the relationship between coffee and health. They analyzed data collected from more than 400,000 Americans ages 50 to 71 participating in the study. “We found that t he coffee drinkers had a modestly lower risk of death than the non-drinkers,”he said. Here’s what he means by “modestly”:those who drank at least two or three cups a day were about 10 percent or 15 percent less likely to die for any reason during the 13 years of the study. When the researchers looked at specific causes of death, coffee drinking appeared to cut the risk of dying from heart disease, lung disease, injuries, accidents and infections. Now, Freedman stressed that the study doesn’t prove coff ee can make people live longer.A study like this can never prove a cause-and-effect relationship. All it can really do is to point researchers in the right direction for further investigation. And even if it turns out that coffee is really good for you, scientists have no idea why.1. According to the author, scientists ___.A. have already proved that coffee is good for human healthB. have a long way to go before they find a way to study coffeeC. have avoided the cause-and-effect approach to study coffeeD. are still unable to figure out why coffee is good for us2. According to the first paragraph, reporters would like to know the research findings of ___.A. teaB. beerC. alcoholD. coffee3. The word “mixed” in the first paragraph means “___”.A. both good and badB. put togetherC. both sharp and softD. confused4. Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A. Can Beer Help You Live Longer?B. Can Coffee Help You Live Longer?C. Can Wine Help You Live Longer?D. Can Tea Help You Live Longer?5. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A. Freedman and his colleagues hired 400,000 Americans to collect data.B. About four hundred thousand Americans worked for Freedman’s team full time for 13 years.C. People who took part in Freedman’s research are about 50 to 70 years old.D. People who are 50 to 70 years old seldom drink coffee.2).The top of the world is a wonderland. In winter, the temperature often falls to -30°F and the sun never rises. The ocean is surrounded by frozen ground. There are few people or trees, but to polar bears, the Arctic(北极)is home.Polar bears have thick fur, big paws and other features that make them well prepared for life in their tough environment. In fact, they need the Arctic sea ice for survival. But climate change is causing larger and larger areas of summer sea ice to melt (融化). Experts say that if warming patterns continue, the Arctic could be free of summer sea ice by 2050. That may cause two-thirds of the world's 20,000 polar bears to be gone by then too.Polar bears can't survive for long on land. Seals are their main source of food. The only place where polar bears can hunt seals is on the ice. (79) Although these bears are strong swimmers, they are no match for lightning swift seals in the water. A polar bear has brilliantly clever strategies to overcome this disadvantage. In winter the bear waits motionless beside a seal's breathing hole, which is a narrow tunnel through the ice. Often many hours pass before the seal comes up for air and the bear kills it with a powerful blow of its paw. In summer, the polar bears that live on land eat very little and wait for the sea ice to return. With the sea ice forming later in the year and melting earlier, polar bears do not have enough opportunity to hunt and eat. Less sea ice makes it harder for the bears to catch the seals. The bears must swim longer distances between ice packs(大片浮冰), and they can't always makeit. The ice is also getting thinner. These conditions can cause polar-bear cabs to become separated from their mothers, who provide them with food.Steven Amstrup is the chief scientist of Polar Bears International. The group aims to save the bears and their home. "The more people who see polar bears and understand their difficult situation, the better the chance we'll alter our warming path in time to save them," he says.6. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Starving polar bears are increasingly coming into villages, where they may be killed either for food or safety.B. Polar bears can spend their entire lives on land if the sea ice melts completely.C. Two-thirds of the world's polar bears may disappear by 2050 as global warming continues.D. The growing distance between ice packs is not a problem for polar bears, because they are excellent swimmers.7. The word "cubs" in the fourth paragraph is closest in meaning to___A. adultsB. babiesC. huntersD. enemies8. Where do polar bears usually hunt seals?A. On land.B. In open water.C. 一、阅读理解(共10题,每题2分,共20分)请阅读以下文章,回答文章后的五个小题。
每个小题只有一个最佳选项。
Following a noisy “Right to Work” campaign that accused employers of co-operating secretly with the government in “forced labor”, several firms dropped out of the program. To prevent this from getting worse, Chris Grayling, an employment minister, admitted that young people could leave their work experience at any time without being punished for doing so. This not only halted the flight of employers (for now, at least) but also enabled him to announce that new firms have agreed to take part in the program.1.According to the passage, young people in Britain____.A. are used to showing up for workB. value unpaid work very muchC. are always opposed to unpaid workD. could learn something about job security through unpaid work2.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?A. There are more than one million young people who took part in the program.D. There are more than one million young people who are jobless.3.According to the author, the British government is trying to ___ .A. punish young people if they are not cooperating with itB. reform the unemployed youngstersC. avoid the economic slowdownD. reduce welfare spending4.The word “shine” in Paragraph 3 means “___”.A. do wellB. reflect lightC. look happyD. produce light5.Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A. After spending a few minutes on a crowded city street, the brain is less able to hold things in memory, and suffers from reduced self-control. The mind needs nature, and even a little bit can be a big help.6.Which of the following is the main idea of this passage?A. The city inspires talented people.B. The city hurts your brain.C.
