一、阅读理解Regular child care provided outside home or by someone other than the mother does not in itself undermine healthy emotional connections between mothers and their 15-month-old infants, according to a long-term national study. The finding holds even if care begins during the first 3 months after birth and runs for 30 hours or more per week.Among infants who receive unkind and unresponsive care from their mothers, however, the mother-child relationship may be damaged. "This research helps us put apart complexities regarding child care that have not previously been studied in detail," contends Jay Belsky, a psychologist. The investigation consists of 1,153 children and their families living in or near Boston. The youngsters, no more than 1 month old when they entered the study in 1991, will be tracked until the age of 7. Experimenters administered questionnaires to mothers in their homes and videotaped baby caretakers interacting with the kids at ages 1, 6 and 15 months. Independent observers rated the quality of each child care efforts and noted infant nervousness. Unlike most previous studies, this one allows researchers to observe each caretaker's personality at child nursing, and kids' emotional reactions by the equipment.1、 From the first paragraph we know that ______.A、mother care is the best according to a national studyB、child care outside home is the best in accordance with the studyC、regular child care outside home does not in itself do harm to mother-child relationshipD、connections between mothers and infants are damaged by outside care参考答案:C解析:【答案】C【解析】判断题,浏览四个选项,谈论的是母亲抚养孩子与其他人抚养孩子之间的关系。

You should decide on the best.Passage 1.Ever since human beings have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has beenin the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used internationally, spelling, however, cannot.Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction.Other forms nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and instruct people. While verbalization is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also express human thoughts and feelings.1.Which of the following best summarizes this passage?A.When language is a barrier, people will find other forms of communication.B.Everybody uses only one form of communication.C.Nonlinguistic language is invaluable to foreigners.D.Although other forms of communication exist, verbalization is the fastest.2.Which of the following statements is not true?A.There are many forms of communication in existence today.B.Verbalization is the most common form of communication.C.The deaf and mute use an oral form of communication.D.Ideas and thoughts can be transmitted by body language.3.Which form other than oral speech would be most commonly used among blindpeople?A. picture signsB. It may be sai d that we think with our muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies. You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to music not only with your ears but with your whole body. Few people can listen to music that is more or less familiar without moving their body or, more specifically, some part of their body. Often when one listens to a symphony concert on the radio, he is tempted to direct the orchestra (交响乐) even though he knows that there is a competent conductor on the job.Strange as this behavior may be, there is a very good reason for it. One cannot derive all possible enjoyment form music unless he participates, so to speak, in its performance. The listener “feels” himself into the music with more or less pronounced motions of his body. The muscles of the body actually participate in the mental process of thinking in the same way but this participation is less obvious because it is less pronounced.6.The process of thinking and that of listening are similar in that ________A.both are mental actsB.muscles participate in both processesC.both processes are performed by the entire bodyD.we derive equal enjoyment form them7.The pronounced body motions are a listener’s way of ________A.“feeling” the musicB.participating in the performanceC.deriving enjoyment from the musicD.all of the above8.Body movements are necessary in order for the listener to ________.A.hear the musicB.appreciate the musicC.enjoy the music fullypletely understand the music9.According to the passage, muscle participation in the process of thinking is________.A.deliberateB.obviousC.not really apparentD.very pronounced10.The best title for this passage is ________.A.an Ear for MusicB.Music AppreciationC.How Muscles Participate in Mental ActsD. A Psychological Definition of the Thinking ProcessPassage 3A computer is a machine designed to perform work mathematically and to store and select information that has been fed into it. It is run by either mechanical or electronic means. These machines can do a great deal of complicated work in a very short time.A large computer, for example, can add or subtract nine thousand times a second, multiply a thousand times a second, or divide five hundred times a second. Its percentage of error is about one in a billion digits. It has been estimated that human beings making calculations average about one mistake per two hundred digits. The heart of an electronic computer lies in its vacuum tubes, or transistors. Its electronic circuits work a thousand times faster than the nerve cells in the human brain. A problem that might take a human being two years to solve can be solved by a computer in one minute, but in order to work properly, a computer must be given instructions—it must be programmedComputers can be designed for many specialized purposes—they can be used to prepare payrolls (工资单), guide airplane flights, direct traffic, even to play chess. Computers play an essential role in modern automation in many plants and factories throughout the world.puters are valuable to industry because they ________.A.perform rapidlyB.detect errors in human calculations quicklyC.can solve all mathematical problemsD.eliminate mathematical errors from calculations12.The speed with which an electronic computer works depends on its ________.A.electronic circuitsB.vacuum tubes, or transistorsC.programmerD.instructions13.The passage says that computers play an essential role in ________.A.automation processesB.mathematical computationsC.traffic controlD.the development of mathematical theory14.The use of computers for specialized purposes depends on the ________.A.design of the computerB.power used to operate the computerC.difficulty of the mathematical calculations involvedD.the ability of the programmer15.The passage implies that human beings differ from computers in that they________.A.make fewer errorsB.do not have to be programmedC.work more quicklyD.understand their instructionsPassage 4In the earliest stages of man’s development he had no more need of money than animals have. He was content with very simple forms of shelter, made his own rough tools and weapons and provided food and clothing for him and his family from natural materials around him. As he became more civilized, however, he began to want better shelter, more efficient tools and weapons, and more comfortable and lasting clothing than could be provided by his own neighborhood or by the work of his own unskilled hands. For these things he had to turn to the skilled people such as smiths, leather workers or carpenters who were springing up everywhere. It was then that the questions of payment arose. At first he got what he wanted by a simple process of exchange. The smith who had not the time to look after land or cattle was glad to take meat or grain from the farmer in exchange for an ax or a plough. But as more and more goods which had not fixed exchange value came on the market, exchange became too complicated to be satisfactory. Another problem arose when those who made things wanted to get stocks of wood or leather, or iron, but had nothing to offer in exchange until their finished goods were ready. Thus the difficulties of exchange led by degrees to the invention of money. In some countries, easily handled things like seeds or shells were given a certain value and the farmer, instead of paying the smith for a new ax by giving him some meat or grain, gave him so many shells. If the smith had any shells left when he had bought his food, he could get stocks of the raw materials of his trade. In some countries quite large things such as cows or camels or even big flat stones were used for trade. Later, pieces of metal, bearing values according to the rarity of the metal and the size of the pieces, or coins were used. Money as we know it had arrived.16.Why were early men content with simple life?A.They did not have money.B.They had no better tools than their rough ones.C.They could provide food and clothing and simple shelter for themselves.D.They had been civilized.17.As men became more civilized they ________.A.all learnt to make what they wanted themselvesB.had to travel a lot to look for what they wantedC.got things from other people who knew how to make them betterD.found everything more expensive18.The simple process of exchange _________.A.only made things more complicatedB.was not at all satisfactoryC.could not easily fix exchange valueD.provided everyone with everything he needed19.The phrase “by degrees” means _________.A.naturallyB.slowlyC.step by stepD.quickly20.Money was not use until ________.A.an urgent need for it was feltB. a simple process of exchange came to be practicedC.nothing could be offered in exchangeD.the exchange of one thing for another became too complicated。

Parents said that children did not respect and listen to them, while children said that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that it is built into every part of our society. One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In a more traditional society, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and like, and often to continue the family jobs. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose jobs different from those of their parents. In our society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did, to find better jobs, to make more money and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, that is another cause of the gap between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other. Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is the third cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, senior people are valued for their knowledge, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue in American life for some time to come.6. Each passage is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.Passage oneRites of PassageSuddenly there come times when everything is different —you’re somehowanother personSeveral years ago my parents, my wife, my son, and I ate at one of those restaurants where the menu is written on a blackboard. After a wonderful dinner, the waiter set the bill in the middle of the table. That’s when it happened: my father did not reach for the bill.Conversation continued. Finally it dawned on me. I was supposed to pick up the bill! After hundreds of restaurant meal with my parents, after a lifetime of thinking of my father as the one who had the money, it had all changed. I reached for the check, and my view of myself was suddenly altered. I was an adult. Some people mark off their lives in years; I measure mine in small events —in rites of passage. I did not become a young man at a particular age, like 13, but rather when a kid walked into the store where I worked and called me “mister”. He repeated it several times, looking straight at me. The realization hit like a punch: Me! I was suddenly a mister. There have been other milestones. The cops of my youth always seemed big, even huge, and of course they were older than I was. Then one day they were suddenly neither. In fact, some were kids —short kids at that. The day came when I suddenly realized that all the football player in the game I was watching were younger than I was. They were just big kids. With that milestone went the dream that someday, maybe, I too could be a football player. Without ever having reached the hill, I was over it.I never thought that I would fall asleep in front of the television set as my father did. Now it’s what I do best. I never thought that I would go to t he beach and notswim. Yet I spent all of August at the seaside and never once went into the ocean. I never thought that I would like opera, but now the sadness and combination of voice and orchestra appeal to me. I never thought that I would prefer to stay home evenings, but now I find myself passing up parties. I used to think that people who watched birds were strange, but this summer I found myself watching them, and maybe I’ll get a book on the subject. I long for a religious conviction that I never th ought I’d want, and in arguments with my son, I repeat what my father used to say to me. I still lose. One day I bought a house. One day —what a day! — I became a father, and not too long after that I picked up the bill for my own father. I thought then it was a rite of passage for me. But one day, when I was a little older, I realized it was one for him too. Another milestone.1.When the young man picked up the bill and paid it, ____.A)he felt that his father should have paid itB)he was glad to have the chance pay the bill for onceC)he realized he was now an adultD)his father said he would pay it as he usually did so2.The man marked off his life not by the passing years but by _____.A)comparing himself with other peopleB)certain meaningful eventsC)counting the milestones of his lifeD)recalling events of the past3.When the writer was young, _____.A) he looked forward to the day when he would be like his fatherB)it seemed to him that the policeman were big and tallC)he felt bird watching was an interesting hobbyD)he couldn’t understand why his father fell asleep while watching TV4.Why didn’t the writer go swimming while he was at the beach in August?A)Because he liked going to the opera.B)Because he preferred to watch birds.C)Because he was not young anymore.D)Because he did not know how to swim.5.When the writer argued with his son, ____.A)he used the same reasons as his father didB)he always succeeded in winning the argumentsC)he sometimes managed to persuade his son to agree with himD)he seldom succeeded in winningPassage twoThe verb procrastinate comes from the Latin procrastinate, which means to postpone until tomorrow. To procrastinate, then, is to delay doing something until some future time, and a procrastinator is someone who is always putting off what he or she should be doing right now. Those of us who have a tendency toward procrastination know that it is a terrible habit. Every day we tell ourselves that we must start doing things immediately, andeach day we postpone our work, are late for deadlines, and put off keeping our promises to other people. Because we are always in the process of procrastinating, we are also always trying to catch up. We are always doing yesterday's jobs today, and tomorrow we will be doing today's unfinished work.Maybe the way to overcome procrastination is to change our habits gradually. We can start with a daily schedule of the things we want or need to accomplish. But let's be reasonable. We shouldn't crowd the list with too many tasks, and we should be realistic about what we can do. Especially in the beginning we should be lenient(宽大的, 仁慈的) with ourselves. After all, if we get discouraged at the start, we will go right back to our old habits. Finally, if we begin to follow our own schedule for each day, we will stop postponing the chores that face us. Life will become far less complicated and each day will be easier to face. We will undoubtedly feel better about ourselves, too, because we will know that we can overcome our weaknesses and improve ourselves.1. The first paragraph tells us _____ of the word procrastinate.A) the originB) the meaningC) the historyD) both A and B2. A procrastinator is a person who always postpones ___work.A) importantB) unimportantC) important or unimportantD) uninteresting3. The first step suggested by the author to change the habit of procrastinating is ___.A) not to fill our plans with too many tasksB) to make a plan for everyday activitiesC) to list as many tasks as possibleD) not to be reasonable with our plan4. Procrastinators do not live a happy life, because___.A) life is complicated and uneasy for them to faceB) they can't choose what to doC) things often become more difficult the next dayD) they will lose interest in doing things5. The author of the passage tries to tell us ___.A) that to be a procrastinator is not easyB) to be procrastinatorsC) that to be a procrastinator is bad for oneselfD) that being a procrastinator is good for othersPassage threeA good reader is one who can read beyond the lines, seeing ideas implied through the words, and one who can bridge the gap between the obvious and the suggested, thus obtaining much more information. Let's look at the following sentence:JOHN HENDERSON WAS DRIVING HOME LATE LAST NIGHT FROM AN EXHAUSTING BUSINESS TRIP.As you might have realized, this is the opening sentence of a story. It tells the reader whom the story is about -- John Henderson, and when the event takes place -- late one night, if we read carefully and thoughtfully we can also infer from this sentence that1. John Henderson may be a businessman because he has just finished a "business trip"2. John Henderson must be very tired because the trip is "exhausting"3. John Henderson must be very eager to get home because he is driving "late" at night right after this exhausting trip.Making inferences while reading will always help us achieve a better comprehension. But we should keep in mind that inferences must be made with care and supported by evidence. In order to make reasonable inferences we should1. read and think beyond the primed words;2. analyze the information given in the text;3. determine the author's reason for his choice of words.1. According to the author, a good reader___.A) can read between the linesB) should have a large vocabularyC) knows enough grammar rulesD) must have a good knowledge of the author2. From the quoted sentence, you know John Henderson was most likely___.A) a sellerB) a man on businessC) a driverD) a traveler3. From the quoted sentence, you know John Henderson had a ___.A) tired tripB) bored tripC) boring tripD) tiring trip4. When the author asks us to make inferences while reading, he intends to say___.A) make guessesB) have imaginationsC) do translationsD) reach conclusions5. The best topic of the passage is ____.A) Reading SkillsB) Try to Be a Good ReaderC) Reading Is ImportantD) Reading Is ThinkingPassage fourMan's first real invention, and one of the most important inventions in history, was the wheel. All transportation and every machine in the world depend on it.(The wheel is the simplest yet perhaps the most remarkable of all inventions, because there are no wheels in nature — no living thing was ever created with wheels.) How, then, did man come to invent the wheel?Perhaps some early hunters found that they could roll the dead body of a heavy animal through the forest on logs more easily than they could carry it. However, the logs themselves weighed a lot.It must have taken a great prehistoric thinker to imagine two thin slices of log connected at their centers by a strong stick. This would roll along just as the logs did yet be much lighter and easier to handle. Thus the wheel and axle came into being, and with them the first carts.1. The wheel is important because _______.A. it was man's first real inventionB. all transportation depends on itC. every machine depends on itD. both B and C2. In 1973, over 500 organizations had adopted the idea, and by 1974, its number had risen to over 200,000.Flexible working hours were invented in Germany in the late 196 0s but reached Britain only in 1972. The system allows workers to s tart and finish work whenever they want, with only two requirements. These are, firstly, that all workers must be present for certain“k ey”times in the day and secondly, that all workers must work an a greed total number of hours per week. The system has proved an almost total success wherever it has been tried. A survey of 700 workers on flexible hours showed three main advantages: a better balance between working and private life, a voidance of the need to travel during rush hours, and the ability t o be able to finish a certain task before leaving. From the employers’point of view, the system tends to increase productivity, reduce labor turnover and give the worker a greater s ense of duty.11.According to the passage, the _________invented the “flexible working hours”.A. Human beings have the ability to express their actions, feelings and ideas through words. They can also write words down in order to communicat e past events and to send messages to people far away.Even though some birds have learned to repeat words, they d o not understand the meaning of the words, and therefore they cannot use them to communicate ideas. How did man first learn to speak? Identify the paragraphfrom which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking thecorresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.Finding the Right Home—and Contentment, Too.[A] When your elderly relative needs to enter some sort of long-term care facility---a moment fewparents or children approach without fear---what you would like is to have everything made clear.[B] Does assisted living really mark a great improvement over a nursing home, or has the industrysimply hired better interior designers? Are nursing homes as bad as people fear, or is that an outmoded stereotype (固定看法)? Can doing one’s homework really steer families to the best places? It is genuinely hard to know.[C] I am about to make things more complicated by suggesting that what kind of facility an olderperson lives in may matter less than we have assumed. And that the characteristics adult children look for when they begin the search are not necessarily the things that make a difference to the people who are going to move in. I am not talking about the quality of care, let me hastily add.Nobody flourishes in a gloomy environment with irresponsible staff and a poor safety record. But an accumulating body of research indicates that some distinctions between one type of elder care and another have little real bearing on how well residents do.[D] The most recent of these studies, published in The journal of Applied Gerontology, surveyed 150Connecticut residents of assisted living, nursing homes and smaller residential care homes (known in some states as board and care homes or adult care homes). Researchers from the University of Connecticut Health Center asked the residents a large number of questions about their quality of life, emotional well-being and social interaction, as well as about the quality of the facilities.[E] “We thought we would see differences based on the housing types,” said the lead author of thestudy, Julie Robinson, an associate professor of medicine at the university. A reasonable assumption---don’t families struggle to avoid nursing homes and suffer real guilt if they can’t?[F] In the initial results, assisted living residents did paint the most positive picture. They were lesslikely to report symptoms of depression than those in the other facilities, for instance, and less likely to be bored or lonely. They scored higher on social interaction.[G] But when the researchers plugged in a number of other variables, such differences disappeared. It is not the housing type, they found, that creates differences in residents’ responses. “It is the characteristics of the specific environment they are in, combined with their own personal characteristics---how healthy they feel they are, their age and marital status, ” Dr. Robinson explained. Whether residents felt involved in the decision to move and how long they had lived there also proved significant.[H] An elderly person who describes herself as in poor health, therefore, might be no less depressedin assisted living even if her children preferred it than in a nursing home. A person who had input into where he would move and has had time to adapt to it might do as well in a nursing home as in a small residential care home, other factors being equal. It is an interaction between the person and the place, not the sort of place in itself, that leads to better or worse experiences.“You can’t just say, ‘Let’s put this person in a residential care home instead of a nursing home---she will be much better off, ” Dr. Robinson said. What matters, she added, “is a combination of what people brin g in with them, and what they find there.”[I] Such findings, which run counter to common sense, have surfaced before. In a multi-state studyof assisted living, for instance, University of North Carolina researchers found that a host of variables---the fa cility’s type, size or age; whether a chain owned it; how attractive the neighborhood was---had no significant relationship to how the residents fared in terms of illness, mental decline, hospitalizations or mortality. What mattered most was the residents’ physical health and mental status. What people were like when they came in had greater consequence than what happened once they were there.[J] As I was considering all this, a press release from a respected research firm crossed my desk, announcing that the five-star rating system that Medicare developed in 2008 to help families compare nursing home quality also has little relationship to how satisfied its residents or their family members are. As a matter of fact, consumers expressed higher satisfaction with the one-star facilities, the lowest rated, than with the five-star ones. (More on this study and the star ratings will appear in a subsequent post).[K] Before we collectively tear our hair out---how are we supposed to find our way in a landscape this confusing?---here is a thought from Dr. Philip Sloane, a geriatricia (老年病学专家) at the University of North Carolina:“In a way, that could be liberating for f amilies.”[L] Of course, sons and daughters want to visit the facilities, talk to the administrators and residents and other families, and do everything possible to fulfill their duties. But perhaps they don’t have to turn themselves into private investigators or Congressional subcommittees. “Families can look a bit more for where the residents are going to be happy,” Dr. Sloane said. And involving the future resident in the process can be very important.[M] We all have our own ideas about what would bring our parents happiness. They have their ideas, too. A friend recently took her mother to visit an expensive assisted living/nursing home near my town. I have seen this place---it is elegant, inside and out. But nobody greeted the daughter and mother when they arrived, though the visit had been planned; nobody introduced them to the other residents. When they had lunch in the dining room, they sat alone at a table.[N] The daughter feared her mother would be ignored there, and so she decided to move her into a more welcoming facility. Based on what is emerging from some of this research, that might have been as rational a way as any to reach a decision.36. Many people feel guilty when they cannot find a place other than a nursing home for their parents.37. Though it helps for children to investigate care facilities, involving their parents in the decision-making process may prove very important.38. It is really difficult to tell if assisted living is better than a nursing home.39. How a resident feels depends on an interaction between themselves and the care facility they live in.40. The author thinks her friend made a rational decision in choosing a more hospitable place over an apparently elegant assisted living home.41. The system Medicare developed to rate nursing home quality is of little help to find a satisfactory place.42. At first the researchers of the most recent study found residents in assisted living facilities gave higher scores on social interaction.43. What kind of care facility old people live in may be less important than we think.44. The findings of the latest research were similar to an earlier multi-state study of assisted living.45. A resident’s satisfaction with a care facility has much to do with whether they had participated in the decision to move in and how long they had stayed there.Section CDirections:There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D).You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 46 and 50 are based on the following passage. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly sophisticated, there are growing concerns that robots could become a threat. This danger can be avoided, according to computer science professor Stuart Russell, if we figure out how to turn human values into a programmable code.Russell argues that as robots take on more complicated tasks, it’s necessary to translate our morals into AI language. For example, if a robot does chores around the house, you wouldn’t want it to put the pet cat in the oven to make dinner for the hungry children. “You would want that robot preloaded with a good set of values,” said Russell. Some robots are already programmed with basic human values. For example, mobile robots have been programmed to keep a comfortable distance from humans. Obviously there are cultural differences, but if you were talking to another person and they came up close in your personal space, you wouldn’t think that’s the kind of thing a properly brought-up person would do.It will be possible to create more sophisticated moral machines, if only we can find a way to set out human values as clear rules.Robots could also learn values from drawing patterns from large sets of data on human behavior. They are dangerous only if programmers are careless. The biggest concern with robots going against human values is that human beings fail to so sufficient testing and they’ve produced a system that will break some kind of taboo (禁忌).One simple check would be to program a robot to check the correct course of action with a human when presented with an unusual situation. If the robot is unsure whether an animal is suitable for the microwave, it has the opportunity to stop, send out beeps (嘟嘟声), and ask for directions from a human. If we humans aren’t quite sure about a decision, we go and ask somebody else. The most difficult step in programming values will be deciding exactly what we believe in moral, and how to create a set of ethical rules. But if we come up with an answer, robots could be good for humanity.46. What does the author say about the threat of robots?A. It may constitute a challenge to computer programmers.B. It accompanies all machinery involving high technology.C. It can be avoided if human values are translated into their language.D. It has become an inevitable peril as technology gets more sophisticated.47. What would we think of a person who invades our personal space according to the author?A. They are aggressive.B. They are outgoing.C. They are ignorant.D. They are ill-bred.48. How do robots learn human values?A. By interacting with humans in everyday life situations.B. By following the daily routines of civilized human beings.C. By picking up patterns from massive data on human behavior.D. By imitating the behavior of property brought-up human beings.49. What will a well-programmed robot do when facing an unusual situation?A. keep a distance from possible dangers.B. Stop to seek advice from a human being.C. Trigger its built-in alarm system at once.D. Do sufficient testing before taking action.50. What is most difficult to do when we turn human values into a programmable code?A. Determine what is moral and ethical.B. Design some large-scale experiments.C. Set rules for man-machine interaction.D. Develop a more sophisticated program.Passage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage. Why do some people live to be older than others? You know the standard explanations:keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc. But what effect does your personality have on your longevity (长寿)? Do some kinds of personalities lead to longer lives? A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at this question by examining the personality characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100.The study shows that those living the longest are more outgoing, more active and less neurotic (神经质的) than other people. Long-living women are also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you would expect from the evolutionary theory: Those who like to make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough times.Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous had no impact on whether study participants were likely to live longer. Those who were more self-disciplined, for instance, were no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas had no relationship to long life, which might explain all those bad-tempered old people who are fixed in their ways.Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing as possible.Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mother’s personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets. Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to break when we’re adults, which may mean that kids of depressed moms end up dying younger.Personality isn’t destiny (命运), and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isn’t just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health.51. The aim of the study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society is __________.A. to see whether people’s personality affects their life spanB. to find out if one’s lifestyle has any effect on their healthC. to investigate the role of exercise in living a long lifeD. to examine all the factors contributing to longevity52. What does the author imply about outgoing and sympathetic people?A. They have a good understanding of evolution.B. They are better at negotiating an agreement.C. They generally appear more resourceful.D. They are more likely to get over hardship.53. What finding of the study might prove somewhat out of our expectation?A. Easy-going people can also live a relatively long life.B. Personality characteristics that prove advantageous actually vary with times.C. Such personality characteristics as self-discipline have no effect on longevity.D. Readiness to accept new ideas helps one enjoy longevity.54. What does the recent study of Norwegian mothers show?A. Children’s personality characteristics are invariably determined by their mothers.B. People with unhealthy eating habits are likely to die sooner.C. Mothers’ influence on children may last longer than fathers’.D. Mothers’ negative personality characteristics may affect their children’s life spans.55. What can we learn from the findings of the two new studies?A. Anxiety and depression more often than not cut short one’s life span.B. Longevity results from a combination of mental and physical health.C. Personality plays a decisive role in how healthy one is.D. Health is in large part related to one’s lifestyle.Part ⅣTranslation(30 minutes) Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English. If you fit the statistical averages, by the age of 20 you will have been exposed to at least 20,000 hours of television. You can add 10,000 hours for each decade you have lived after the age of 20. The only things Americans do more than watch television are work and sleep.Calculate for a moment what could be done with even a part of those hours. Five thousand hours, I am told, are what a typical college undergraduate spends working on a bachelor's degree. In 10,000 hours you could have learned enough to become an astronomer or engineer. You could have learned several languages fluently. If it appealed to you, you could be reading Homer in the original Greek or Dostoyevsky in Russian. If it didn't, you could have walked around the world and written a book about it.The trouble with television is that it discourages concentration. Almost anything interesting and rewarding in life requires some constructive, consistently applied effort. The dullest, the least gifted of us can achieve things that seem miraculous to those who never concentrate on anything. But Television encourages us to apply no effort. It sells us instant gratification(满意). It diverts us only to divert, to make the time pass without pain.Television's variety becomes a narcotic(麻醉的), nor a stimulus. Its serial, kaleidoscopic (万花筒般的)exposures force us to follow its lead. The viewer is on a perpetual guided tour: 30 minutes at the museum, 30 at the cathedral, 30 for a drink, then back on the bus to the next attraction—except on television., typically, the spans allotted arc on the order of minutes or seconds, and the chosen delights are more often car crashes and people killing one another. In short, a lot of television usurps(篡夺;侵占)one of the most precious of all human gifts, the ability to focus your attention yourself, rather than just passively surrender it.Capturing your attention—and holding it—is the prime motive of most television programming and enhances its role as a profitable advertising vehicle. Programmers live in constant fear of losing anyone's attention—anyone's. The surest way to avoid doing so is to keep everything brief, not to strain the attention of anyone but instead to provide constant stimulation through variety, novelty, action and movement. Quite simply, television operates on the appeal to the short attention span.It is simply the easiest way out. But it has come to be regarded as a given, as inherent in the medium itself; as an imperative, as though General Sarnoff, or one of the other august pioneers of video, had bequeathed(遗留;传于)to us tablets of stone commanding that nothing in televisionshall ever require more than a few moments' Concentration. In its place that is fine. Who can quarrel with a medium that so brilliantly packages escapist entertainment as a mass-marketing tool? But I see its values now pervading this nation and its life. It has become fashionable to think that, like fast food, fast ideas are the way to get to a fast-moving, impatient public. In the case of news, this practice, in my view, results in inefficient communication. I question how much of television's nightly news effort is really absorbable and understandable. Much of it is what has been aptly described as "machine-gunning with scraps." I think the technique fights coherence. I think it tends to make things ultimately boring (unless they are accompanied by horrifying pictures) because almost anything is boring if you know almost nothing about it.I believe that TV's appeal to the short attention span is not only inefficient communication but decivilizing as well. Consider the casual assumptions that television tends to cultivate: that complexity must be avoided, that visual stimulation is a substitute for thought, that verbal precision is an anachronism. It may be old-fashioned, but I was taught that thought is words, arranged in grammatically precise. There is a crisis of literacy in this country. One study estimates that some 30 million adult Americans are "functionally illiterate" and cannot read or write well enough to answer the want ad or understand the instructions on a medicine bottle.Literacy may not be an inalienable human right, but it is one that the highly literate Founding Fathers might not have found unreasonable or even unattainable. We are not only not attaining it as a nation, statistically speaking, but we are falling further and further short of attaining it. And, while I would not be so simplistic as to suggest that television is the cause, I believe it contributes and is an influence.Everything about this nation—the structure of the society, its forms of family organization, its economy, its place in the world—has become more complex, not less. Yet its dominating communications instrument, its principal form of national linkage, is one that sells neat resolutions to human problems that usually have no neat resolutions. It is all symbolized in my mind by the hugely successful art form that television has made central to the culture, the 30-second commercial: the tiny drama of the earnest housewife who finds happiness in choosing the right toothpaste. When before in human history has so much humanity collectively surrendered so much of its leisure to one toy, one mass diversion? When before has virtually an entire nation surrendered itself wholesale to a medium for selling? Some years ago Yale University law professor Charles L. Black. Jr., wrote: "... forced feeding on trivial fare is not itself a trivial matter-" I think this society is being forced-fed with trivial fare, and I fear that the effects on our habits of mind, our language, our tolerance for effort, and our appetite for complexity are only dimly perceived. If I am wrong, we will have done no harm to look at the issue skeptically and critically, to consider how we should be residing it. I hope you will join with me in doing so.1. In America people do sleeping and watching televisions more than anything else.2. From the passage we know the time an average American spends on watching TV could have made the person learn to become an astronomer or engineer.3. The trouble with TV is that it distracts people’s attention and encourages them to make no efforts toward their life.4. TV programmers base this operation on the attraction of long-span attention of audiences.5. According to the author the improper television operation in American society will be likely to make things eventually boring.6. Americans will face a serious problem of illiteracy due to the negative impact of TV.7. In American society literacy is a certain right that cannot be deprived.Part ⅢListening Comprehension (35 minutes)Section ADirections: In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. Boys and girls are given the 47 to get to know each other, to learn to live together from their earliest years. They are put in a position where they can compare themselves with each other in terms of 48 ability, athletic achievement and many of the extracurricular activities which are part of school life. What a practical 49 it is (to give just a small example) to be able to put on a school play in which the male parts will be taken by boys and the female parts by girls! What nonsense coeducation makes of the argument that boys are cleverer than girls or vice versa. When 50 , boys and girls are made to feel that they are a race apart. In a coeducational school, everything falls into its 51 place. The greatest contribution of coeducation is 52 the healthy attitude to life it encourages. Boys don’t grow up believing that women are 53 creatures. Girls don’t grow up imagining that men are romantic heroes. Years of living together at school remove illusions of this kind. The awkward stage of adolescence brings into sharp focus some of the physical and 54 problems involved in growing up. These can better be 55 in a coeducational environment. When the time comes for the pupils to leave school, they are fully prepared to 56 society as well-adjusted adults. They have already had years of experience in coping with many of the problems that face men and women.A)advantageB)properC)rewardedD)emotionalE)opportunityF)activityG)overcomeH)academicI)enterJ)mysteriousK)eventuallyL)segregatedM)undoubtedlyN)principleO)advocateSection BDirections:There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.Romantic love is a culture trait found primarily in industrialized societies. Elsewhere in the world, pragmatic considerations rather than flights of fancy are often used to make a choice of partner, and romantic love is seen as an unfortunate inconvenience that gets in the way of the ordinary, rational process of mate selection. Traces of this attitude persist in the American upper classes, where daughters are expected to marry “well”-----that is, to a male who is eligible by reason of family background and earning potential. Most Americans, however, see romantic love as essential for a successful marriage, and tend to look askance(轻蔑地)at anyone who marries for a more practical reason in which love plays no part. The phenomenon of romantic love occurs when two young people meet and find one another personally and physically attractive. They become mutually absorbed, start to behave in what appears to be a flighty(充满幻想的), even irrational manner, decide that they are right for one another, and may then enter a marriage whose success is expected to be guaranteed by their enduring love. Behavior of this kind is portrayed and warmly endorsed(赞同)throughout American popular culture, by books, magazines, comics, records, popular songs, movies, and TV. Romantic love is a noble ideal, and it can certainly provide a basis for the spouses to “live happily ever after.” But a marriage can equally well be founded on much more practical considerations”----as indeed they have been in most societies throughout most of history. Why is romantic love of such importance in the modern world? The reason seems to be that it has some basic functions in maintaining the institution of the nuclear family(小家庭).57. Romantic love is less frequently found in many non-industrial societies because people in these societies_______.A ) firmly believe that only money can make the world go roundB ) fail to bring the imaginative power of the mind into full playC ) fondly think that flights of fancy prevent them from making a correct choice of partnerD ) have far more practical considerations to determine who will marry whom58. The word eligible (in Line5, Para. l), could best be replaced by ____.A ) qualifiedB ) availableC ) chosenD ) influential59. According to the passage, most Americans _____.A) expect their daughters to fall in love with a male at first sightB) regard romantic love as the basis for a successful marriageC) look up to those who marry for the sake of wealthD) consider romantic love to be the most desirable thing in the world60. What can we learn from the second paragraph about romantic love?A) It is a common occurrence among the old.B) It is primarily depicted by books.C) It is characterized by mutual attraction and absorption.D) It is rejected as flighty and irrational.61. The author seems to believe that ___________A) romantic love makes people unable to think clearly in the process of mate selectionB) only romantic love can make a marriage happy ever afterC) much more practical considerations can also be the basis for a successful marriageD) romantic love plays an insignificant role in maintaining the institution of the nuclear family Passage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage. The French word renaissance means rebirth. It was first used in 1855 by the historian Jules Michelet in his History of France, then adopted by historians of culture, by art historians, and eventually by music historians, all of whom applied it to European culture during the 150 years spanning 1450-1600. The concept of rebirth was appropriate to this period of European history because of the renewed interest in ancient Greek and Roman culture that began in Italy and then spread throughout Europe. Scholars and artists of this period wanted to restore the learning and ideals of the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome. To these scholars this meant a return to human. Fulfillment in life became a desirable goal, and expressing the entire range of human emotions and enjoying the pleasures of the senses were no longer frowned on. Artists and writers now turned to religious subject matter and sought to make their works understandable and appealing. These changes in outlook deeply affected the musical culture of the Renaissance period --- how people thought about music as well as the way music was composed and experienced. They could see the architectural monuments, sculptures, plays, and poems that were being rediscovered, but they could not actually hear ancient music --- although they could read the writings of classical philosophers, poets, essayists, and music theorists that were becoming available in translation. They learned about the power of ancient music to move the listener and wondered why modern music did not have the same effect. For example, the influential religious leader Bernardino Cirillo expressed disappointment with the learned music of his time. He urged musicians to follow the example of the sculptors, painters, architects, and scholars who had rediscovered ancient art and literature. The musical Renaissance in Europe was more a general cultural movement and state of mind thana specific set of musical techniques. Furthermore, music changed so rapidly during this century and a half-though at different rates in different countries---that we cannot define a single Renaissance style.62. Today, more and more college students are using Internet for their routine life and study. Net-surfing has become an important part of campus life and greatly enriched the students’ life. Some students, however, spend too much time on Internet. Sometimes they would be completely indulged in the virtual Internet world. Whenever they find a “cozy” place in a stuffy net bar they would play computer games or chat on-line day and night, forgetting the passing of time. Worsestill, some students even become addicted to visit the pornographic websites or play computer games that are full of violence. This, certainly, does great harm to both their health and their study. There is no denying that Internet has enriched young people’s life. But once a student becomes too indulged in the virtual Internet world the student’s normal life will be impacted, an d even spoiled. As youngsters, we should tell right from wrong. We should try to limit the net-surfing time to a reasonable amount and refuse to visit those websites which are established only to lure young people with the content of sex and violence. Only in this way can we truly establish and maintain a colorful Internet world.Part II Fast Reading1-7 N Y Y N Y NG N8. arranged in grammatically precise9. become more complex, not less10. only dimly perceivedPart III Listening ComprehensionSection A11. Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged bythe thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tr ee to grow in its own way.First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The obj ect may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of sm all side branches, which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pru ning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or b ranches that are rubbing against each other and thus causing wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the center and so preventi ng the free movement of air.One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healin g and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible. Laws are designed to make certain that people's rights are protected and that people resp ect each other's rights. Sometimes, however, laws are passed which are specific to a time or situation. For example, a town in Indiana once passed a law making it illegal to shoot op en a can of food. Apparently, some gun-carrying citizens forgot their can openers and natu rally enough, used their guns to do the job. This disturbed other citizens, and endangered t heir lives, so a law was passed to prevent it.Specific laws sometimes remain in existence long after the problem has disappeared. Th e laws then seem strange. For example, the Indiana law was no longer necessary when citi zens stopped carrying guns and using them as can openers. Since the law was no longer n eeded, what once made sense now seems like nonsense.Sometimes laws designed to serve a good purpose were passed but somehow these bec ame mixed up in their wording. As a result, the laws don't make sense. In one state there i s a law which says that it is "illegal to move or to attempt to move a motor vehicle." Obvio usly, a massive traffic jam would occur if everyone suddenly obeyed that law. But no one d oes, of course, because the intention of the law was not to prevent owners from moving th eir own cars. It was to prevent people from moving (stealing) other people's cars.It is often harder to repeal (废止)a law than to pass one, so many of these old laws remain in existence. Because they no longer fit the way people live or because the problem no longer exists, these laws are igno red. Everyone understands that and life goes on. Thus, laws that once made very good sen se now seem like nonsense.1. According to the passage, laws are designed for the purpose of ____________.A. protecting people's rightsB. making people respect each otherC. preventing gun-carryingD. punishing criminals2. The word "job " in paragraph 1 refers to ___________.A. workingB. shootingC. preventing gun-carryingD. disturbing others3. The author used the Indiana law as an example to explain _________.A. how some laws are passed and changedB. how people in Indiana open cansC. why some laws may seem strangeD. why people in Indiana no longer use their guns4. What's the problem with the law concerning motor vehicles?A. It leads to traffic jams.B. It is not clearly written.C. It is not designed to serve a good purpose.D. It has been out of date.5. We can conclude from the passage that ___________.A. a law system is necessary for every societyB. some laws that don't make sense may also get passedC. it is more difficult to change the old law than pass a new oneD. some laws may seem strange as time passes答案:ACCBD(3)、 Trees should only be pruned when there is a good and clear reason for doing so a nd, fortunately, the number of such reasons is small. Baseball and basketball both use fields and or courts for there recreational purposes. In contrast, basketball are uses a wooden court. It’s found indoors and it’s glazed so the players don’t slide. Basketball isn’t played on the grass because it would be impossible to bounce the ball. It’s not just the luxury of sleeping that effects teenagers, according to the Washington Post American. Teenagers are getting far less sleep than they need, and their health, behavior and academic performance are suffering as a result.Based in part on Dr. Mary Carskadons research, some . School have changed their school’s start time. Most these schools are moving there starting times back to times around 9:00 a.m. because it makes it easier for the students to learn and pay attention in class. Guajome Park Academy high school starts at 7:45 a.m. in the morning. From 7:45 to about 9:00 is when I have math and/or German depending on the day. In the time span of these classes some people will experience tiredness, irritability, edginess, and problems with memory, says Dr. Lindsley. Parent news says that 20% of all high school students fall asleep in school during this time. The majority of teenagers needs 9 to 10 hours of sleep a day. Such a general increase in prices is called inflation. Of course prices of selected goods may increase for reasons unrelated to inflation: the price of fresh lettuce may rise because unseasonably heavy rainfall in California has ruined the lettuce crop, or the price of gasoline may rise if the oil-producing countries set a higher price for oil. During inflation, however, all prices tend to rise.Over the last 400 years there have been many periods of inflation. In the 16th century, when the Spaniards began bringing back gold and sliver from the New World, prices in Western Europe moved upward as the supply of money increased. During the 19th century prices tend to go downward as food and raw materials became cheaper. After major wars such as the Napoleonic Wars and World Wars I and II, prices again moved upward. In the 1950s and 1960s a so-called creeping inflation occurred, when the general price level in the United States and Western Europe rose by an average of 1 to 5 percent each year. IN the 1970s inflation increased until it reached as much as 13 percent a year in the United States. Many countries have suffered from inflation more than has the United States. Israel had inflation of more than 100 percent a year in the early 1980s, meaning that the cost of living more than doubled every year. In Argentina inflation was greater than 400 percent in 1975 and averaged more than 100 percent each year from 1976 to 1982. The most remarkable inflation in modern times was the German hyperinflation of 1923, when people went to the store with wheelbarrows full of money to buy a few groceries. She is a healthy role model for young and old people all over the world, and it is an honor to say she is Conidian.Celine Dion was born in Charlemagne, Quebec, on March 30,1968 and was the youngest of 14 children in a large musical family. Celine Dion was named after a song her mother was singing while pregnant. She was discovered singing in the family owned restaurant, at age 12, but had been singing there ever since age five, along with other children in her family. It was a small restaurant and club where the children could often show their musical talents where her father would play the accordion and mother the violin. At only five years old, she had already began to develop as a singer and entertainer, so it makes sense she had the talent and capability to produce her very first recording at only age twelve with her mother and her brothers. Celine was discovered by Montreal Impresario, Rene Angelil, who later became her husband, in 1981. Celine’s mother had found Rene’s address in an album of Ginette Reno, a popular French singer. Rene had heard the demo-tape containing the songs Celine had written, and he was immediately taken to make her an internationally known talent.
