MarrakechGeorge Orwell1 As the corpse went past the flies left the restaurant table in a cloud and rushed after it, but they came back a few minutes later.2 The little crowd of mourners -- all men and boys, no women--threaded their way across(break ones way)the market place between the piles of pomegranates and the taxis and the camels, walling a short chant over and over again. What really appeals to the flies is that the corpses here are never put into coffins, they are merely wrapped in a piece of rag and carried on a rough wooden bier on the shoulders of four friends. When the friends get to the burying-ground they hack an oblong hole a foot or two deep, dump the body in it and fling over it a little of the dried-up, lumpy earth, which is like broken brick. No gravestone, no name, no identifying mark of any kind. The burying-ground is merely a huge waste of hummocky earth, like a derelict building-lot. After a month or two no one can even be certain where his own relatives are buried.1.

Marrakech is a fascinating city that left a deep impression on me. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the vibrant atmosphere and rich cultural heritage that permeates every corner of the city. The bustling markets, known as souks, are a true sensory overload, with their colorful displays of spices, textiles, and handicrafts. The narrow winding streets, lined with traditional Moroccan architecture, create a maze-like experience that is both exciting and enchanting. One of the highlights of my visit to Marrakech was exploring the historic sites, such as the Bahia Palace and the Koutoubia Mosque. These architectural wonders are a testament to the city's rich history and the skill of its craftsmen. The intricate tile work and ornate carvings are simply breathtaking. Standing in the courtyard of the Bahia Palace, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonderat the beauty that surrounded me.Another aspect of Marrakech that I found fascinating was the food. Moroccan cuisine is known for its boldflavors and unique combinations of spices. I had the opportunity to try traditional dishes like tagine and couscous, and each bite was a burst of flavors that I had never experienced before. The street food scene in Marrakech is also a must-try, with stalls offering everything from freshly squeezed orange juice to grilled meat skewers. It was a true culinary adventure that satisfied both my taste buds and my curiosity.Beyond the sights and flavors, what truly made my experience in Marrakech memorable was the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people. From the shopkeepers in the souks to the locals I met in the streets, everyone I encountered was friendly and welcoming. They were always willing to share a smile, engage in conversation, and offer assistance when needed. It was these interactions that made me feel like I was not just a tourist passing through, but a guest in their city.

Marrakesh, a captivating city nestled in the heart of Morocco, has long been a destination that has captured the imagination of travelers and language enthusiasts alike. As an avid learner of the English language, I recently had the opportunity to immerse myself in an advanced English language program in this vibrant cultural hub. The experience was nothing short of transformative, offering me a unique perspective on the nuances and complexities of the English language while simultaneously broadening my understanding of the rich tapestry of Moroccan culture. From the moment I stepped off the plane, the sights, sounds, and smells of Marrakesh enveloped me, creating a sensory experience that was both exhilarating and overwhelming. The bustling medina, with its maze-like alleyways and vibrant souks, was a far cry from the orderly streets I was accustomed to back home. The air was thick with the aroma of spices, the calls of street vendors, and the laughter of children at play. It was in this captivating setting that I embarked on my language learning journey, eager to immerse myself in the rich cultural and linguistic landscape of Morocco. The advanced English language program I attended was meticulously designed to challenge and engage students like myself. The curriculum was a perfect blend of classroom instruction, interactive workshops, and immersive cultural experiences. Each day, I found myself grappling with complex grammatical structures, delving into the idiomatic expressions that give the English language its unique character, and exploring the various regional dialects and accents that have shaped the language over time. One of the most remarkable aspects of the program was the diversity of the student body. Hailing from all corners of the globe, my classmates brought with them a wealth of linguistic and cultural backgrounds, enriching the learning experience with their unique perspectives and experiences. Together, we navigated the intricacies of the English language, sharing insights, debating nuances, and pushing each other to expand our linguistic horizons. The classroom sessions were led by a team of highly skilled and passionate instructors, who not only possessed a deep understanding of the English language but also had a profound appreciation for the cultural context in which it is used. They encouraged us to think critically about the ways in which language and culture intersect, challenging us to consider the social, political, and historical factors that have influenced the development of theEnglish language.Beyond the classroom, the program offered a plethora of opportunities to immerse ourselves in the local culture. We were taken on guided tours of the medina, where we had the chance to practice our language skills in real-world scenarios, bargaining with shopkeepers, ordering traditional Moroccan cuisine, and engaging in lively conversations with the locals. These experiences not only reinforced the language skills we were acquiring but also deepened our understanding of the rich tapestry of Moroccan culture. One of the most profound moments of the program came during a visit to a traditional Berber village in the Atlas Mountains. As we navigated the winding paths and explored the intricate architecture, we were struck by the stark contrast between the modern, globalized world we had left behind and the timeless traditions that had endured in this remote corner of Morocco. It was in this setting that we were able to truly appreciate the diversity of human experience and the ways in which language can both unite and distinguish us.Throughout the program, I was consistently challenged to push the boundaries of my linguistic abilities, to think critically about the nuances of the English language, and to embrace the cultural richness that surrounded me. The instructors were tireless in their efforts to ensure that we not only mastered the technical aspects ofthe language but also developed a deep appreciation for its cultural and historical context. As the program drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the profound impact that the experience had had on my personal and academic growth. The skills and knowledge I had acquired were not merely theoretical but had been forged through a process of immersive, hands-on learning that had transformed the way I approached the English language. I had gained a newfound appreciation for the power of language to bridge cultural divides, to foster cross-cultural understanding, and to unlock new avenues of personal and professional growth.Beyond the tangible language skills I had acquired, the program had also instilled in me a deep sense of curiosity and a desire to continue exploring the rich tapestry of the English language and the cultures that have shaped it. I left Marrakesh with a renewed passion for learning, a deeper understanding of the complexities of communication, and a profound appreciation for the transformative power of language. In the months since my return, I have found myself drawing upon the lessons and experiences I gained in Marrakesh, both in my academic pursuits and in my everyday interactions. The skills I developed, the insights I gained, and the memories I forged have become anintegral part of my personal and professional growth, shaping the way I approach language learning and cultural exchange. As I look back on my time in Marrakesh, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have participated in this transformative program. The city, the people, and the language have left an indelible mark on my heart and mind, and I know that the lessons I learned will continue to shape my journey as a lifelong learner and global citizen. It is a testament to the power of language to transcend borders, to foster understanding, and to unlock new worlds of possibility.。

M a r r a k e c h马拉喀什见闻(中英)Marrakech 马拉喀什见闻1、 As the corpse went past the flies left the restaurant table in a cloud and rushed after it, but they came back a few minutes later.

2、 The little crows of mourners – all me and boys, no women –threaded their way across the marker place between the piles of pomegranates and the taxis and the camels, wailing a short chantover and over again. What really appeals to the flied is that the corpses here are never put into coffins; they are merely wrapped in a piece of ray and carried on a rough wooden bier on the shoulders of four friends. When the friends get to the burying-ground they hackan oblong hole afoot or two deep, dump the body in it and fling overit a little of the dried-up, lumpy earth, which is like broken brick. No gravestone, no name, no identifying mark of any kind. The burying-ground is merely a huge waste of hummocky earth. Like a derelict building-lot. After a month or two no one can even be certain where his own relatives are buried.

Reflection on Marrakech“Marrakech", an essay, which reveals the poverty and discriminationcaused by the colonialism in Marrakech. George provides us with somesimp le, yet impressive pictures of local life in later part. For instance, thliving conditions in Jews ghetto, marginalized section of society- women, sickening maltreatment of animals, etc.We can tell by the following aspects that Marrakech is quite poor.Firstly, as the essay opens, the author takes us through the stench of acorpse that attracted the cloud of flies from the restaurant. Not only is adead body carried openly through the streets, but the flies, enjoying thedecay. There is an implied sense of pity for those people forced to live insuch conditions. Secondly, Orwell's use of vivid description continues ashe conveys the squalor of the living and working conditionsin the Jewishghetto. Orwell describes the Jewish ghetto, highlighting the disgustingconditions the Jews are forced to live under. And then he goes on tovividly describe another marginalized section of society - its women.Orwell presents a vivid physical description of the women of Marrakech, showing us the heavy toll that their mistreatment has taken on theirbodies. Furthermore, the author describes the menial tasks they areexpected to perform, despite their lack of health and strength. He writesabout a meeting with a group of women collecting wood. Orwell exp lo itsparticularly vivid and emotive language here in phrases such as, “poorold",“reduced to bones", “bent double", and“crushing weight". Thiscreates pity and sympathy for the women. It is not only the Jews and thewomen who are mistreated, and Orwell also uses vivid language to describe the sickening mistreatment of animals. As far as I am concerned, one country would be destined to sufferfrom poverty and backwardness if it had surrendered to another. And itspeople become one of the colonial countries’possess ions, along with theland and buildings, and they lose their individual identity. As a result, they live in the shadow of the ruthless oppressors, assuming the role ofthe helpless and silent subjects and feeding unmerc iful oppressor. Thosepeople who lived in Marrakech were not considered and treated as humanbeings, they had nothing to do with their bitter encounter but did manuallabor for the colonial powers, and generations of ideas and economicpotential were lost. Moreover, any opportunity for deve loping the nationitself in preparation for industrialization or improvement was ignored. Asmost of us know that poverty can lead to a vicious cycle. Due tocolonization, Marakech cannot develop its own educational system, therefore, the local people utterly lack knowledge and thought. Some ofthem even believed in that white race were their masters, how pathetic it was. .。

因为我们在做语篇分析的时候,就是要尽可能接近作者进行作品创作的本意“we try to arrive at what the writer wanted to convey”。

在当地,位于上层社会的殖民主义者看见肥肥的蹬羚常常会联想起有薄荷口味的调味汁(…in fact, one can hardly l ook at their hindquarters without thinking of a mint sauce.)。

(Probably its idea was that if it could drive me away the bread would somehow remain hanging in mid-air.)。

当他看见作者喂蹬羚面包时,感到十分不可思议(…as though he had never anything quite like this before.),因为他认为,面包只是人吃的,岂能给动物吃?

(Fina lly, he said shyly in French: “I could eat some of that bread.”)。

(The Moroccan donkey is hardly bigger than a St. Bernard dog, it carries a load which in the British Army would be considered too much for a fifteen-hands mule, and very often its packsaddle is not taken off its back for weeks together.)。

(After a dozen of years of devoted work it suddenly drops dead, thereupon its master tips it into the ditch and the village dogs have torn its guts out before its is cold.)。

她们同样枯干瘦小,由于多年劳作和岁月的消失所带来的钙质的减少,使她们收缩成儿童一样的身体(…when they get beyond certain age, shrink to the seize of children.)。

(She accepted her status as an old woman, that is to say as a beast of burden.)。

(This kind of thing makes one’s blood boil, whereas---on the whole---the plight of the human beings does not.),这里“This kind of thing”指“毛驴之死”而“the plight of the human beings”则更多地指向这里“老年妇女的命运”。

(As the storks flew northward the Negroes were matching southward)。

(How long before they turn their guns in the other direction?),但是惟独这些“黑鬼们”却头脑中只有一根弦---为钱而卖命。

(And really it was like watching a flock of cattle to see the long column, a mile or two miles of armed men, flowing peacefully up the road,…)。

(All colonial empires are in reality founded upon this fact.)。
