Songwriting Competition

My Side of the Mountain is a novel about a boy called Sam Gribley. 14-year-old Sam Gribley lives in his family's crowded New York apartment. Unsatisfied with the situation, Sam plans to run away to his great-grandfather's abandoned farm in the woods near the small town of Delhi.
Sam's father allows it. He strongly believes Sam will come back once he realizes what it's like———to live without things like electricity and running Water.
Then a bus takes Sam to Delhi. Sam uses fire to enlarge a tree's inside and makes it his home. To seek food, he makes traps. While checking his traps，Sam spots a falcon（猎鹰）hunting for animals. Wanting a falcon to help hunt, Sam studies falconry(训鹰术) at the town's library. He camps for days to ferret out the falcon's nest. After finally piecing together its location, he steals a baby falcon and manages to train it to hunt for him. As winter approaches, Sam kills a deer for its skin and roasts deer meat for food.
Spring arrives. Matt, a teenager reporter, arrives at Sam's treehouse. Matt wants to write about Sam's life on the Gribley farm and spends a week with Sam. Matt is very excited to be there while Sam is suddenly sad. Matt's coming reminds him too much of life in New York City. There are his close friends and family members who were once around him, accompanying him, listening to him and talking to him.
In June, Sam's father announces that the entire family is moving to the farm. Sam is happy but
also upset. It is the end of freedom.

One of the greatest killers in the Western World is heart disease. The death rate from the disease has been increasing at an alarming speed for the past thirty years. Today in Britain, for example, about four hundred people a day die of heart disease. Medical experts know that people can reduce their chances of getting heart disease by exercising regularly, by not smoking, by changing their diets, and by paying more attention to reducing stress in their work.
However, Western health-care systems are still not paying enough attention to the prevention of the disease. There is a need for more programs to educate the public about the causes and prevention of heart disease. Instead of supporting such programs, however, the US health-care system is spending large sums of money on the surgical treatment of the disease after it develops. This emphasis on treatment clearly has something to do with the technological advances that have taken place in the past ten to fifteen years. In this time, modern technology has enabled doctors to develop new surgical techniques. Many operations that were considered impossible or too risky a few years ago are now
performed every day in US hospitals. The result has been a huge increase in heart surgery.
Although there is no doubt that heart surgery can help a large number of people, some people point out that the emphasis on the surgical treatment of the disease has three clear disadvantages. First, it attracts interest and money from the question of prevention. Second, it causes the costs of general hospital care to rise. After hospitals buy the expensive equipment that is necessary for modern heart surgery, they must try to recover the money they have spent. To do this, they raise costs for all their patients, not just those patients whose treatment requires the equipment. The third disadvantage is that doctors are encouraged to perform surgery---even on patients for whom an operation is unnecessary---because the equipment and expert skills are there. A government office recently stated that major heart surgery was often performed even though its chances of success were low. In one type of heart surgery, for example, only 15 percent of patients improved their conditions after the surgery. However, more than 100 000 of these operations are performed in the United States every year.

A group of blue-faced birds step through the grass shoulder to shoulder, red eyes looking around. They look like middle schoolers seeking a cafeteria table at lunchtime. Perhaps they’re not so different.
A new study, led by Damien Farine, an ornithologist who studies collective behaviour, shows that the vulturine guineafowl of eastern Africa, like humans, have multilevel societies. In the past, scientists assumed such social structures required a lot of brainpower. But the pea-brained guineafowl are revealing the faults in that assumption.
These large birds wander across the landscape in packs, often walking so closely that their bodies touch. They may fight each other to maintain their strict hierarchies (等级制度), but at other times they engage in friendly behaviours like sharing food.
Suspecting the guineafowl might have a social structure, Dr. Farine and his colleagues began a thorough study of their society. For a whole year, they made daily observations of 441 birds. Coloured leg bands in unique combinations let researchers tell the black-and-blue birds apart. They also attached GPS devices to the backs of 58 birds, which let them see exactly where every group went, 24 hours a day.
The findings of the research suggest that the vulturine guineafowl(鹫珠鸡) have a multilevel society. There are groups within groups within the population as a whole. There even seem to be groups of friends within the small groups. This is the first time anyone has observed such a society in a bird.
And Dr. Farine emph asizes this particular bird’s tiny brain size: “They don’t only have small brains relative to mammals ( 哺乳动物), they also have quite small brains relative to other birds,” he said.
According to him, living in this kind of society might actually make it easier to keep track of the social order. For example, if groups are stable and a bird can identify just one or two individuals within a group, it knows which group it’s looking at—no need for a brain that can recognize every single animal. Multilevel societies also let animals adjust their group sizes based on whatever challenges they’re facing. Depending on what enemies or resources are around, it might make sense to travel in a combined group rather than a smaller one.
“Having a multilevel structure may not require having a large brain,” Dr. Farine said. There may be more birds and other animals out there that, although small-brained, have societies as many-leveled as our own.
