But nowadays that image has changed in many ways. Beggars can even look exactly like a white-collar worker. With the development of the Internet, beggars also benefit from new technology. Without standing on the street all day long, they can just sit at home and click the keyboard -- "beggar websites" make the begging business much easier.Just by googling the words beggar and website, dozens of such Chinese forums are found. "Please donate 1 yuan; it will help me be rich!"-- that's a common slogan from many of these begging websites. The layout of these sites is quite similar. There are some funny or tragic pictures across the top of the screen, then a request for donations is classified into three levels. 1 yuan, 5 yuan and 10 yuan. Just by clicking on these buttons, one can make a kindly donation. People can pay through an online paying system or send money to a bankcard number. These websites also provide lists of those who have donated, but almost all of them have mostly donated 1 yuan per person, and online stores or other small websites can have a place on the site for a small advertisement after the donation.Actually, such begging websites are not original in China. Online begging first appeared inthe United States. Some individuals opened such websites to relieve their economic embarrassment. In 2002, a woman in New York owed about $20,000 to the bank, so she set up a begging website and, what a surprise, she received over $13,000 from netizens which solved herproblems more or less.In some "professional" begging websites in the United States, the website organizer can even receive many thousands of dollars. At the heart of“Danish Design”is the idea that, as poet and designer Piet Hein puts it: “There is one art, not more, nor less, and that is to do all things with artlessness(朴素) .Danish design places equal emphasis on practicality and equality. From Lego toys to furniture, Danish products are known for their clean lines, simplicity and functionality.“Remove material where it’s not needed. Keep things simple and functional and execute(制作)them carefully, ”explained Hans J. Wegner, the first Danish designer to achieve worldwide fame:“The aim is not to create a work of art, but to produce a good chair. ”“The Danes have done a better job than most in promoting arts in Europe, packing a punch(使劲出击)way above their country ’s size and population in the fields of architecture, sculpture and design,”writes Helena Smith, reporter with British newspaper the Guardian. The simplicity of Danish design may extend to the quality of life there. Some even claim thatthe Danes have the highest quality of life of any nation in the world.Kate Vial, a 55-year-old American who has lived and worked in Denmark for more than 30 years, explaining why she chooses to live in Denmark rather than the US, told Germany ’s biggest news weekly Der Spiegel: “I just chose a simpler lifestyle, one where I could ride my bike all over and where I don ’thave to make a great living to survive. ”74. They had had their QQ Show avatars clothes and other items stolen. One person lost 1,800 virtual items, worth 60,000 yuan, reported Southern Metropolis Daily. ButTencent said netizens needed to turn to their local cyber police department for help. However, Guo Qing, lawyer of Beijing ’s Yingke Law Firm, said: “If the companies involved can’tprove they ’ve done enough to protect the virtual property, they should bear responsibility. ”In recent years, there has been much talk about virtual property.Players get virtual property from Web games. By engaging in various activities, they get in-game items and virtual money, which be bought and sold within the game.Today, virtual property is a billion dollar world industry. Web games like Secondlife, Entropia and World of Warcraft have their own currencies, which can be bought with hard cash. And players can make money by trading in virtual houses or setting up clothing stores. But today the protection of virtual property still remains a new concept in China, with the law having little to say about the problem. Local police often think virtual property has no real value. But it does have value, some experts say, because players spend time, energy, money, labor and intelligence getting in-game goods. For this reason, they argue that Copyright Law should protect virtual property.Other Chinese experts say Internet thieves should be punished according to the Criminal Law. Wang Xiaoquan, a young netizens in Shenyang, was sentenced to three years in prison by the local court for theft of 100,000 yuan worth of virtual property in May.The protection of virtual property in law has become a trend. In Taiwan, virtual property is regarded as“movable property”in crimes of fraud and theft, and considered as part of one’s private property. People at work and in their free time 48 think of creative ways to solve problems. Maybe you have a goal to achieve, a tricky question to answer or you just want to expand your mind! Here are three techniques to help you.Making connections. This technique involves taking 49 ideas and trying to find links between them. First, think about the problem you have to solve or the job you need to do. Then find an image, word, idea or object, for example, a candle. Write down all the ideas/words6with candles: light, fire, matches, wax, night, silence, etc. Think of as many as you can. The next stage is to relate the 51 to the job you have to do. So imagine you want to buy a friend an original 8 ; you could buy him tickets to match or take him out for the night.NO limits! Imagine that normal limitations don’t exist. You have as much time /space / money, etc. as you want. Think about your goal and the new 52 . If your goal is to learn to ski, 53 , you can now practice skiing every day of your life (because you have the time and the money). Now 54 this to reality. Maybe you can practice skiing every day in December, or every Monday in January.Be someone else! Look at the situation from a 55 point of view. Good businessmen use this technique in trade, and so do writers. Fiction writers often imagine they are the characters in their books. They ask questions: What does this character want? Why can’t she get it?What changes must she make to get what she wants? If your goal involves other people, put yourself in their 56 . The sun drops like a ball of golden fire into the sea, and it drops .so quickly that you can almost see it move. The sun leaves behind a glow(霞光) that lights the skies and shines in the quiet water.People often have a quiet, peaceful time while walking along the beach. The first strangers to these islands centuries ago were who came from Tahiti in canoes(独木舟) .Now no matter where the people come from, they reallywant to see the original(原始的) beauty of Hawaii. Hawaii, the Dramatic Beauty.(B)Trees should only be pruned (修剪) when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and , the number of such reasons is small. Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown andunwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way.First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches, which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the center and so preventing the free movement of air.One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease , but it is a wound that will heal (愈合). Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible. It is importantto make the area, which has been pruned, smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the materials available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually done in winter , for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference (妨碍) from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly .61.Pruning should be done to _____.A.make the tree grow taller.B.improve the shape of the tree.C.get rid of the small branches .D.make the small branches thicker.62.Trees become unhealthy if the gardener__________.A.allows too many branches to grow in the middleB. does not protect them from the windC. forces them to grow too quickly.D.damages some of the small side branches63.Why is a special material painted on the tree?A.T o make a wound smooth.B.To prevent disease entering a wound.C.to cover a rough surface.D.To help a wound to dry.64.What was the author’s purpose when writing this passage?A.T o give practical instruction for pruning a tree.B.To give a general description of pruning.C.T o explain how trees develop disease.D.To discuss different methods of pruning.(C)Examinations have a longer history in China than in any other country, yet it is today an issue。

tones.Sometimes, however,I receive a gift, reminding me of the gifts in my life. The following passage is one of those gifts.Peter Jones is a92yearold,short,calm and proud man.Every morning he is fully dressed by eight o’clock, with his hair fashionably combed and face perfectly shaved, even though he is unable to see.He would move to a nursing home today. His wife of70years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After hours of waiting patiently in the entrance hall of the nursing home,he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he moved his walker skillfully to the elevator, the nurse provided a visual description of his tiny room.“I love it,”he stated with the ebullience of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new pet dog.“Mr.Jones,you haven’t been to the room,”said the nurse.“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,”he replied.“Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time.Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged...it’s how I arrange my mind.I have already decided to love it.It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up.I have a choice:I can spend the day in bed complaining of the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work,or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.Each day is a gift, and as long as I am alive,I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away.”May each of our days continue to be a gift.94.What do we know about Mr.Jones?A.His wife died many years ago.B.He received a pet from the nurse.C.His room in the nursing home is big.D.He grateful(B)“Hi there. How’s it going?”“Oh,fine.Fine.How about this weather, huh?”“Well,I guess we can always use the rain.”What’s that? This story?Oh,just a little look at small talk. You know;those seemingly meaningless conversations you have dozens of times a day.Maybe you’re waiting for the elevator.Or in a line at the bank.It all seems pretty trivial.Idle chatter about traffic doesn’t do much more than fill the air with empty words that are quickly forgotten. But you should know that small talk actually has a big place in our lives.Pat Oliver, assistant professor on arts, says that,“Left unchecked, small talk can be an invasion. It’s so powerful. It does something to you.”“Every morning after spending an hour and a half on the freeway I start the day with small talk with my secretary,”Oliver says,“If I don’t make small connection with another person,I can’t work.”What causes it?As a rule, you’re either trying to force something into your life,or you’re using conversation as an invisible force field to keep them out.You can be wanting to connect with another person, and small talk is your introduction to more meaningful conversation. The way people use small talk is usually determined by where they happen to be at the time.Take the elevator, for instance. Now there’s prime territory.Nobody knows anyone and there’s no reason no start a conversation, but invariably, someone does.“Making conversation in such peaceful social settings”,according to Oliver,“can confirm your territory. It’s a way of feeling like and accepted.”The topics of small talk don’t matter. In fact, you don’t want anything more taxing than the weather or the traffic. It’s non-threatening talk in a threatening situation. However, the rules change quickly when you’re with lots of people doing lots of talking.Let’s say you’re at a party. Now it’s time to use small talk as a way of making others feel more comfortable around you,so you don’t look silly standing by the food table alone all night.98.“Small talk”,as interpreted by the author,_______.A.has no real function in communication at allB.is usually meaningless and therefore uselessC.is not as idle as it may seem to beD.is reliably? An analysis is issued a sample of data a Texas school district.Experts argue convincingly that teacher effectiveness should be measured by students’gains on standardized tests:Mr.Smith is presumably a better teacher than Ms.Brown if his students consistently improve their test scores more than hers do.Though this approach is appealing, there are tricky issues. For example, what if Ms.Brown teaches in a school where students score so high there is little room for improvement? The authors try to correct for this problem,as well as other sorts of measurement issues,to generate a measurement of teacher effectiveness. The paper is primarily concerned with how this measure is related to other observable characteristics. The first finding is that there is a large variation in teacher effectiveness:some teachers consistently have a larger impact on their students’achievement than others.Second, easily observable characteristics like having a master’s degree or a passing score on the teacher certification exam are not correlated with teacher effectiveness. Then what does matter? The most important single influence is experience:first-year teachers are much less effective than others. The second year is significantly better, and by the fourth year, most teachers hit their stride. It is not entirely clear whether this experience effect is learning by doing(the more you teach, the more effective you become)or survival of the fittest(those who are not good at teaching tend to drop out early). From my reading of the paper, both effects appear important and there is no simple answer. The data do suggest, however, that teacher effectiveness is pretty clear by the end of the second year,so the information to make an informed decision is available at that time. The authors also investigate the contentious issue of racial matching of students and teachers. Here they find strong evidence that minority teachers tend to be more effective with minority students.Again,it is unclear whether this is because of a role model effect(students respond better of their own race)or an empathy effect(teachers empathize better with students of their own race)or something else entirely. The authors also look at teacher mobility. There is some evidence that teachers who quit teaching or switch schools tend to be below average in effectiveness. This is consistent with the survival-of-the-fittest model.106.The author of this passage holds the view that__________.A.teachers will perform better with time passingB.ineffective teachers should leave earlier rather than laterC.teacher’s effectiveness is apparent after a couple of yearsD.a master’s degree will improve teacher’s effectiveness107.Why do black teachers tend to be more effective with black students?A.Students feel secure,so they respond better.B.Teachers sympathize with students of their own race.C.There are entirely some other identified reasons.D.The reasons are far from clear and definite.108.Which of the following may serve as the best title?A.Tenure,Turnover and the Quality of TeachingB.Impact of Teacher Quality on Student LearningC.Different Sorts of Measurement 上海交大附中2018届高三10月月考II.Grammar and VocabularySection ADirections: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.AA young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had wanted a beautiful sports car in a show room, and 21 (know) his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted. As Graduation Day came near, the young man expected signs 22 that his father had bought the gift. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his own study and told him how proud he was 23 (have) such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift box.Curious, and somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather 24 (bind) Bible, with the young man's name pressed in gold.Angry, he raised his voice to his father, and said "With all your money, you give me a Bible?" and stormed 25 the house. Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, 26 realized his father was very old, and thought perhaps he should go to him. However, 27 he could make arrangements, he received a telegram 28 (tell) him his father had passed away, and willed all his possessions to his son. When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still gift-wrapped Bible just as he 29 (leave) had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages.Suddenly, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag, which 30 (read) the date of his graduation on it, and the words PAID IN FULL.BThe need to feed a growing population is putting much pressure on the world's supply of water. 31 97% of the world's water too salty to be drunk or used in agriculture, the worldwide supply of water needs careful management, especially in agriculture. 32 the idea of a water shortage seems strange to someone fortunate enough to live in a high rainfall country, many of the world's agricultural industries 33 (experience) constant water shortages.Although dams can be built to store water for agricultural use in dry areas and dry seasons, the costs of water redistribution are very high. Not only is there the cost of the engineering itself, but there is also an environmental cost to be considered. 34 valleys(山谷)are flooded to create dams, houses are lost and wildlife homes destroyed. Besides, water may flow easily through pipes to fields, but it cannot be transported from one side of the world to 35 .Each country 36 therefore rely on the management of its own water to supply its farming requirements. This is particularly troubling for countries with agricultural industries in areas dependent on irrigation. In Texas, farmers overuse of irrigation water 37 (result) in a 25% reduction of the water stores. In the Central Valley area of southwestern USA, a huge water engineering project provided water 38 farming in dry valleys, but much of the water use has been poorly managed.Saudi Arabia's attempts 39 (grow) wheat in desert areas have seen the pumping of huge quantities of irrigation water from underground reserves. Because there is no rainfall in these areas, such reserves can only decrease, and it is believed that fifty years of pumping 40 (see) them run dry.Section BDirections:Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once.Note that there is one word more than you need.police officer, I have some urgent things to say to good people. Day after day my men and I struggle to 41 an epidemic of crime. Something has gone terribly wrong with our once-proud American way of life. It has happened in the area of values. A significant 42 is disappearing, and I think I know what it is: accountability.Accountability isn't hard to define. It means that every person is responsible for his or her actions and liable for their consequences. Of the many values that hold civilization together—honesty, kindness, and so on—accountability may be the most important of all. Without it, there can be no respect, no trust, no law---and, ultimately, no society. My job as a police officer is to 43 accountability on people who refuse, or have never learned, to impose it on themselves. But as every policeman knows, external controls on people's behavior are far less effective than internal restraints such as guilt, shame and embarrassment.Fortunately there are still communities—smaller towns, usually—where schools maintain discipline and where parents hold up standards that declare: "In this family certain things are not 44 they simply are not done!" Yet more and more, especially in our larger cities and suburbs, these inner restraints are 45 . Your typical robber has none. He considers your property his property; he takes what he wants, including your life if you 46 him.The main cause of this breakdown is a radical shift in 47 . Thirty years ago, if a crime was committed, society was considered the victim. Now, in a shocking reversal, it's the criminal who is considered victimized: by his underprivileged upbringing, by the school that didn't teach him to read, by the church that failed to reach him with 48 guidance, by the parents who didn't provide a stable home.I don't believe it. Many others in equally 49 circumstances choose not to engage in criminal activities. If we free the criminal, even partly, from accountability, we become a society of endless 50 where no one accepts responsibility for anything. We in America desperately need more people who believe that the person who commits a crime is the one responsible for it.III.Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,B,C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.A recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent more money on its pets than on its children. Although rather shocking, it should not 51 surprise anyone who has seen the doggy parlors(客厅)where loved pets rest. It is possible that: Americans are unique in treating their little friends in this way,but the information we have suggests that the English, too, are 52 to their pets. This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which often contain more vitamins than human food or at least, are 53 less nutrition. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone, 54 veterinary(兽医的)bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to feel 55 with this when considering what the same amount could do for victims of starvation and poverty, so it is 56 for me to get hot under collar when I read an old man left all his money to his dog instead of his children. There are a variety of reasons why I find the popularity of British pets 57 . They cause physical problems. An example of this is New York where they have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number of large cities it is a major problem. Animals can cause disease, too. It is the threat of rabies—a disease with no known cure—that has made the English government impose strict 58 on animals coming into the United Kingdom. When the Spanish government recently 59 a number of stray dogs as protection against the same threat, English tourists immediately wrote letters to the newspapers 60 about 'mass murder'.Another problem is the 61 of pet owners. Most little children want a dog or a cat, and they continually push their mothers and fathers until they get one. It is only when the "sweet little thing" has been brought home that the parents realize how much time and money must be spent on "Rover" or "Bonzo". Then they just 62 it. This brings me to mylast point. Pets, which run free, are often not 63 at all.English farmers lose hundreds of sheep a year, killed by someone's pet and you must have read of children being hurt by some pets of their own.64 , I would only suggest that we have got our 65 wrong and that something should be done about it. In my view, it's time we stopped being sentimental about pets.51.A.alert B.surprise C.disappoint D.interest52.A.hostile B.polite C.subject D.available53.A.seldom B.far C.frequently D.totally54.A.in spite of B.regardless of C.not to D.rather than55.A.delighted B.patient C.mention D.unsatisfiedual B.natural C.concerned D.essential57.A.inevitable B.understandable C.ridiculous mon58.A.orders B.punishments C.unacceptable D.restriction59.A.cured B.destroyed C.treatments D.drove60.A.inquiring B.caring C.enclosed plaining61.A.thoughtlessness B.hesitation C.worrying D.kindness62.A.isolate B.scold C.expectation D.bind63.A.funny B.sweet C.desert D.loving64.A.Nevertheless B.Moreover C.Therefore D.Meanwhile65.A.mind B.behavior C.love D.prioritySection BDirections: Read the following three passage. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.AIn agrarian(农业的), pre-industrial Europe, "you'd want to wake up early, start working with the sunrise, have a break to have the largest meal, and then you'd go back to work," says Ken Albala, a professor of history at the University of the Pacific, "Later, at 5 or 6, you'd have a smaller supper."This comfortable cycle, in which the rhythms of the day helped shape the rhythms of the meals, gave rise to the custom of the large midday meal, eaten with the extended family," Meal are the foundation of the family, says Carole Couniban, a professor at Millersville University in Peensylvania," so there was a very important interconnection between "eating together" and strength-eating family ties.Since industrialization, maintaining such a slow cultural metabolism has been much harder. With the long midday meal shrinking to whatever could be stuffed into a lunch bucket or bought at a food stand. Certainly, there were benefits. Modern techniques for producing and shipping food led to greater variety and quantity, including a tremendous, increase in the amount of animal protein and dairy products available, making us more vigorous than our ancestors.Yet plenty has been lost too, even in cultures that still live to eat. Take Italy. It's no secret that the Mediterranean diet is healthy, but it was also a joy to prepare and cat. Italians, says Counihan, traditionally began the day with a small meal. The big meal came at around 1 p.m.In between the midday meal and a late, smaller dinner came a small snack. Today, when time zones have less and less meaning, there is little tolerance for offices' closing for lunch, and worsening traffic in cities means workers can't make it home and back fast enough anyway. So the formerly small supper after sundown becomes the big meal of the day, the only one at which the family has a chance to get together. "The evening meal carries the full burden that used to be spread over two meals", says Counihan.66.What do we learn from the passage about people in pre-industrial Europe ?A.They had to work from early morning till late at night.B.They were so busy working that they only ate simple meals.C.Their daily routine followed the rhythm of the natural cycle.D.Their life was much more comfortable than that of today.67.What does "cultural metabolism"(Line 1,Para.3) refer to?A.Evolutionary adaptation.B.Changes in lifestyle.C.Social progress.D.Pace of life.68.What does the author think of the food people eat today?A.Its quality is usually guaranteed.B.It is varied, abundant and nutritious.C.It is more costly than what our ancestors ate.D.Its production depends too much on technology.69.What does the author say about Italians of the old days.A.They enjoyed cooking as well as eating.B.They ate a big dinner late in the evening.C.They ate three meals regularly every day.D.They were expert at cooking meals.BSupersized activities for your little ones at Sentosaduring the June HolidaysStorytelling Comes Alive!Date: Every Wed-Sun at 11:30 am.3:30 pm & 5:30 pmVenue: Images of Singapore ForecourtAdmission: FreeEnjoy SUPERSIZED activities for the entire family this June at our international award-winning interactive event, Story Telling Comes Alive! To environmentalist opponents, GM foods are simply evil, an understudied possibly harmful tool used by big agricultural businesses to control global seed markets and crush local farmers. They argue that GM foods have never delivered on their supposed promise, that money spent on GM crops would be better channeled to organic farming and that consumers should be protected with warning labels on any products that contain genetically modified ingredients. To supporters, GM crops are a key part of the effort to sustainably provide food to meet a growing global population. But more than that, supporters see the GM opposition of many environmentalists as fundamentally anti-science, no different than those who question the basics of man-made climate change. For both sides, GM foods seem to act as a symbol: you're pro-agricultural business or anti-science. But science is exactly what we need more of when it comes to GM foods, which is why I was happy to see Nature devote a special series of articles to the GM food controversy. The conclusion: while GM crops haven't yet realized their initial promise and have been dominated by agricultural businesses, there is reason to continue to use and develop them to help meet the enormous challenge of sustainably feeding a growing planet. That doesn't mean GM crops are perfect, or a one-size-fits-all solution to global agriculture problems. But anything that can increase farming efficiency—the amount of crops we can produce per acre of land—will be extremely useful. GM crops can and almost certainly will be part of that suite of tools' but so will traditional plant breeding, improved soil and crop management—and perhaps most important of all, better storage and transport infrastructure(基础设施), especially in the developing world. (It doesn't do much good for farmers in places like sub-Saharan Africa to produce more food if they can't get it to hungry consumers.) I'd like to see more non-industry research done on GM crops—not just because we'd worry less about bias, but also because seed companies like Monsanto and Pioneer shouldn't be the only entities working to harness genetic modification. I'd like to see GM research on less commercial crops, like com.I don't think it's vital to label GM ingredients in food, but I also wouldn't be against it—and industry would be smart to go along with labeling, just as a way of removing fears about the technology. Most of all, though, I wish a tenth of the energy that's spent endlessly debating GM crops was focused on those more pressing challenges for global agriculture. There are much bigger battles to fight.73.How do environmentalist opponents view GM foods according to the passage?A.They will eventually ruin agriculture and the environment.B.They are used by big businesses to monopolize agriculture.C.They have proved potentially harmful to consumers' health.D.They pose a tremendous threat to current farming practice.74.What does the author say is vital to solving the controversy between the two sides of the debate?A.Breaking the GM food monopoly.B.More friendly exchange of ideas.C.Regulating GM food production.D.More scientific research on GM crops.75.What is the author's view on the solution to agricultural problems?A.It has to depend more and more on GM technology.B.It is vital to the sustainable development of human society.C.GM crops should be allowed until better alternatives are found.D.Whatever is useful to boost farming efficiency should be encouraged.76.What does the author think of the ongoing debate around GM crops?A. It arises out of ignorance of and prejudice against new science.B.It distracts the public attention from other key issues of the world.C.Efforts spent on it should be turned to more urgent issues of agriculture.D.Neither side is likely to give in until more convincing evidence is found.Section CDirections:Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two sentences than you need.A.One should be prepared to analyze all the problems.B.But do you really have an accurate idea what they mean?C.This growing trend of reporting only part of the information is becoming dangerous.D.These statistics may horrify you and mislead you.E.If we teenagers are to be left this world.we had better be able to think critically, and form our own views, rather than be easily persuaded by another's.F.The point of this article is that one should be aware of what is and is not being said. This is a dangerous world we live in. The number of murders goes up every year, people are dying of cancer, more people contract(感染)HIV, more teens are using drugs, etc. You know this because you've heard all the statistics on the news and in the paper. 77 The numbers are going up, but how do they compare to the growth in population? Are more cases of these diseases being reported because of better testing techniques, or are the diseases more common? The fact is that without knowing the background statistics mean very little.78 .For example, several years ago a high school student reported the dangers of the chemical known as dihydrogen monoxide(一氧化二氢). This chemical, found in most cancerous umors(肿瘤), is often found in the blood of people drunk on alcohol, and causes complete physical and mental dependence for those who take the chemical even once. After reading his report, more than 75% of his Advanced Placement Chemistry class voted to forbid this dangerous chemical! Every one of the above statements is true, yet this chemical is necessary to all life on earth. The students made the mistake because they voted knowing only a few statements and statistics, rather than the chemical's full background.79 .When one finds a new fact or number, one should try to consider other important information before forming an opinion with only half-truths. Always remember that the author is trying to convince you of his or her own view, and will leave out information that is different to his view. For example, look again at the statistics that suggest skiing is safe.Only people may die each year when skiing, while 897 die from lightning strikes, but which is really the most dangerous? If you think about it, you realize far fewer people go skiing each year than the number of people who are in danger of a lightening strike. When you think about it, skiing is more dangerous than you might at first think when looking at statistics. 80 . To be warned is to be prepared.IV.Summary WritingDirections: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.Like many students, Ryan believes that the time and money spent on his education will pay off, he will eventually be able to get a good job and do well in the field he has chosen. And yet, in spite of all of the years spent in school preparing to enter the workplace, many recent graduates say that they struggle with the shift from classroom to career world andhave difficulty adjusting life on the job.Writer and editor Joseph Lewis suggests one reason why this is the case.Lewis believes that most of our school experiences---from childhood through university---are fairly predictable, while life in the working world is far more uncertain. In school, for example, the pattern stays more or less the same from year to year. In the workplace, however, constant change is the norm, and one has to adapt quickly.Another problem is that in school, many students spend a lot of time memorizing facts and repeating what they "learned" on tests. But in the workplace employees "are often expected to think critically and make decisions about their work, not just follow a supervisor's instructions. " Less time needs to be spent in school on testing, says one recent report, and more on helping students to analyze and interpret information, solve problems, and communicate their ideas effectively—skills that will prepare them to succeed in today's workplace. Finally, in the workplace, employees must regularly interact with others and are often dependent on their co-workers for their success. In other words, if an employee has to work with others to complete a given project, that employee's success not only depends on his hard work and expertise, but also on how well his colleagues perform. Knowing how to participate effectively in teamwork—and deal with problems when they arise—is extremely important, and yet, it is also something many students don't get quite exposed to in a school setting. How can we better prepare young adults for the workplace? Recent graduates, looking back on their educational experience, have some advice. Many think that all students should be required to do an internship(实习)while they are in school. V olunteering part time at a company, hospital, or government organization, for example, can help one gain experience and learn skills needed to succeed in the real world. Doing these will help prepare students for the realities of the workplace and make the transition from school to career world less stressful.V.TranslationsDirections: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1.太阳能源是未来人们赖以生存的可再生资源之一。

In almost every part of the world where films are seen on television, children and their parents still enjoy Heidi and other films of Shirley Temple. Although she has not appeared in a film for over thirty years, her name is still dear to people of all ages. When Shirley Temple was twenty-one years old, she was already out of the film circle. Twenty years later, many people still thought her as a little girl that Americans have always loved in the films. However, others knowher as an excellent woman with knowledge of world problems. Some animals seem able to do this. For example, dogs and cats often find their way home from long distances. To do this they have to use their intelligence. They have to remember and think. But many birds find their way over long distances, too. They travel thousands of miles every year when they move from cold to warm countries. We do not know how they dothis but we know that they do not use their intelligence. They do not remember places and directions and then make decisions. Young birds are able to make these journeys without help as soon as they can fly. They are born with this ability. This is not intelligence. We call this “instinct”(本能).Often we cannot be sure whether an animal is acting intelligently or instinctively. When a dog hears a strange noise, it barks. This is instinct. It cannot stop itself from doing this. It does not really know why it is doing this. But supposing a noise is on fire and t he dog barks outside its master’s bedroom until he wakes up. Is the dog using its intelligence? Is it solving the problem by waking its master or is it simply barking instinctively because it is afraid? Often we cannot be sure. Many animals, however, can be taught to solve problems, especially when they are given rewards. Rats have been taught to touch a key to get food. Animals in circuses (马戏团) have been taught to do all sorts of tricks to amuse the audience. In all these cases we may say that an animal i s using intelligence. It is saying, “If I do this, I will get a reward. Therefore, I will do it.” This may be thought of as a low kind of intelligence.56.To find their way home from long distances, cats and dogs have to __________.A. use their instinctB. use their intelligenceC. travel thousands of milesD. get enough food57.Birds don’t have intelligence because _________.A. they cannot find their way homeB. they don’t remember places and direction s and then make decisionsC. young birds are able to flyD. they cannot bear cold weather58.We say a dog is not using its intelligence when barking at a strange noise because ___________.A. it cannot control itselfB. it knows how to bark when it has grown upC. we are not sure of itD. it stops people from getting into a house59. Animals in circuses do all sorts of tricks to amuse an audience because ___________.A. they know how to speakB. they like to do soC. they know they will be rewardedD. they are afraid of human beings60.Which of the following is NOT TRUE?A. We are not sure whether birds use their instinct or intelligence when they fly long distances.B. Even young birds can travel long distances.C. Animals know how to solve a problem if you teach them.D. A rat is showing a low kind of intelligence when it touches a key to get food.(C)Albert Einstein had a great effect on science and history, greater than other men have achieved. An American university president once said that Einstein had created a new outlook, a new view of the universe (宇宙). It may be some time before we understand fully the identity of time and space and so on, but even ordinary men understand now that the universe is larger than ever thought before.By 1914 the young Einstein had gained world fame. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited opportunities for study, but soon his peace and quiet were broken by the First World War.Einstein hated wars. The misery of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappily in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.In the year following World War I honors came to him. He became the head of the Institute of Theoretical Physics. In 1921 he won the Nobel Prize, and he was honored in Germany until the rise of Nazism (纳粹主义) when he was driven from Germany because he was a Jew.61. Most large cities in the United States offer an international sample of foods. Many people enjoy eating the food of other nations. This is probably one reason why there are so many different kinds of restaurants in the U.S. A second reason is that many Americans come from other parts of the world. They enjoy tasting the foods of their native lands. There are many other international restaurants as well as the opportunity tobetter understand the people and their way of life.81. _________________One of the most common international restaurants to be found in the U.S. is an Italian restaurant. Or it may be a large restaurant which can serve many people during one evening.82. _________________There are two kinds of styles of Chinese cooking that are popular in the U.S. One of these comes from the northern part of China. It is called Mandarin cooking. The other comes from the south of China, called Cantonese style cooking. Usually, a thin, ark liquid is used to flavor the cooking. This liquid is called soy source. However, Cantonese dishes usually have a heavy sauce, but Mandarin cooking usually has a thin sauce. Mandarin dishes are just a little spicy. You will not be very thirsty after a mandarin style meal.83. __________________Another kind of Oriental food that is interesting to eat is Japanese food. In most Japanese restaurants in the U. That is perhaps why sculpture has been described as the most difficult of all arts; certainly it is more difficult than the arts which involve __49__ of flat forms, shape in only two dimensions. Many more people are ‘form-blind’ than color-blind. Children learning to see, first distinguishes only two-dimensional shape; it cannot judge distances, depths. Later, for their personal safety and practical needs, they have to develop partly by __50__ of touch, the ability to judge roughly three-dimensional distances. But after they __51__ the requirements of practical necessity, most people go no further. Though they may __52__ considerable accuracy in the perception(知觉,感知) of flat form, they do not make the further intellectual and emotional effort needed to __53__ form in its full spatial existence. This is what the sculptor must do. He must __54__ continually to think of, and use, form in its full spatial completeness. He gets the solid shape, as it were, inside his head-he thinks of it, whatever its size, as if he were holding it completely in the hollow of his hand. He __55__ visualizes a complex form from all round itself; he knows while he looks at one side what the other side is like, he will have to __56__ himself with its centre of gravity, its mass, its weight; and he realizes its volume, as the space that the shape displaces in the air.And the sensitive observer of sculpture must also learn to feel shape simply as __57__, not as description or reminiscence(回忆,联想). He must, for example, see an egg as a simple single solid shape, quite apart from its significance as food, or from the __58__ idea that it will become a bird. And so withsolids such as a shell, a nut, a plum, a pear, a tadpole, a mushroom, a mountain peak, a kidney, a carrot, a tree-trunk, a bird, a bud, a lark, a ladybird, a bulrush, a bone. From these he can go on to appreciate more complex forms of combinations of several forms.(B)A. expertB. introducedC. characterD. separation AB. establishedAC. variety AD. admired BC. complexity BD. fascinated CD. originalsABC. regardedClassical Roman dramaFollowing the expansion of the Roman Republic into several Greek territories between 270-240 BC, Rome encountered Greek drama. From the later years of the republic and by means of the Roman Empire, theatre spread west across Europe and reached England; Roman theatre was more varied, extensive and sophisticated than that of any culture before it.While Greek drama continued to be performed throughout the Roman period, the year 240 BC marks the beginning of regular Roman drama. From the beginning of the empire, however, interest in full-length drama declined in favor of a broader __59__ of theatrical entertainments. The first important works of Roman literature were the tragedies and comedies that Livius Andronicus wrote from 240 BC. Five years later, Gnaeus Naevius also began to write drama. No plays from either writer have survived. Andronicus was most appreciated for his tragedies and Naevius for his comedies; their successors(继任者) tended to be __60__ at one or the other, which led to a(n) __61__ of the subsequent development of each type of drama.By the beginning of the 2nd century BC, drama was firmly __62__ in Rome and an association of writers had been formed. The Roman comedies that have survived are all “fabula palliate” (comedies based on Greek subjects) and come from two dramatists: Plautus and Terence. In re-working the Greek __63__, the Roman comic dramatists abolished the role of the chorus(合唱) in dividing the drama into episodes and __64__ musical accompaniment to its dialogue. The action of all scenes is set in the street and its complications often follow from eavesdropping(偷听).Plautus, the more popular of the two, wrote between 205 and 184 BC and twenty of his comedies survive; people __65__ him for the wisdom of his dialogue and his use of various poetic meters. All of the six comedies that Terence wrote between 166 and 160 BC have survived; the __66__ of his plots, in which he often combined several Greek stories, was sometimes criticized, but his double-plots enabled a sophisticated presentation of contrasting human behavior. No early Roman tragedy survives, though it was highly __67__ in its day; historians know of three early tragedians—Quintus Ennius, Marcus Pacuvius, and Lucius Accius. From the time of the empire, the work of two tragedians survives—one is an unknown author, while the other is the philosopher Seneca. Nine of Seneca’s tragedies survive, all of which are tragedies from Greek stories. Historians do not know who wrote the only extant example of the fabula praetexta (tragedies based on Roman subjects), Octavia, but in former times it was mistakenly attributed to Seneca due to his appearance as a(n) __68__ in the tragedy.III. Reading ComprehensionSection AWar Peace, epic historical novel by Leo Tolstoy, originally published as “Voyna i mir” in 1865-69. This overall study of early 19th-century Russian society noted for its mastery of realistic detail and variety of psychological analysis, __69__ as one of the world’s greatest novels. It has been widely __70__ for the stage, film, and television. Among the most notable film versions is that directed by Sergey Bondarchuk, which won an Academy Award in 1968.War and Peace is primarily __71__ with the histories of five aristocratic(贵族的) families--__72__ the Bezukhovs, the Bolkonskys, and the Rostovs--the members of which are portrayed __73__ a vivid background of Russian social life during the war against Napoleon. Tolstoy uses their individual stories to portray Russia on the edge of a disastrous conflict with Napoleon’s France. Events swiftly move the central characters toward this inevitable war. No other writer is better than Tolstoy in the scale of his epic vision, which shows the mood of whole cities, the movement of armies, and the sense of coming __74__ of the entire society. Moreover, the interconnected nature of the personal and the political is __75__ explored. As Tolstoy examines his characters’ emotional reactions to the rapidly changing circumstances in which they find themselves, he uses them to represent Russian society’s responses to the demands of both war and peace. The theme of war, __76__, is not so important as the story of family life, which __77__ Tolstoy’s optimistic belief in the life-affirming(积极向上的) pattern of human existence. The heroine, Natasha Rostova, __78__, reaches her greatest fulfillment through her marriage to Pierre Bezukhov and through motherhood. The novel also sets forth a theory of history, concluding that there is a __79__ of free choice; all is ruled by an inevitable historical determinism(决定论).War and Peace is one of those few texts – James Joyce’s Ulysses is another – that are atoo often read as some kind of __80__ test, only to be either abandoned halfway or displayed as a victory, never to be touched again. It is indeed very long, but it is a novel that is truly worth close attention and re-reading. As a key figure of the High Renaissance, he is specifically celebrated for his ambitious approach to scale and his expertise on anatomy(解刨). While all of his masterworks convey his undeniable talent, his world-famous fresco(湿壁画) on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel stands above the rest.Painted for the pope, the composition depicts a range of religious iconography(象征手法) in Michelangelo’s distinctive style, making it one of the most cherished masterpieces in the world. The Sistine Chapel is a large chapel named after Pope Sixtus IV, who oversaw its restoration in the late 15th century. Historically, the chapel has had various important functions. Today, it still possesses its religious role, as it serves as the site where the next pope is elected. What the Sistine Chapel is most well-known for, however, is its ceiling. Painted by Florentine fine artist Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni between 1508 and 1512, the complex and colorful fresco is celebrated for its realistic figures, vast size, and innovative process.By the early 16th century, Michelangelo were a respected artist known throughout Italy. He was particularly praised for his ability—both in painting and sculpture—figures with lifelike anatomical features, as evident in his famous David statue from 1504. Given the artist’s reputation, it is no surprise that Pope Julius ordered him to decorate the ceiling of Sistine Chapel, whose walls were already decorated with frescoes by Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Perugino, and other famed artists. While the pope’s plans for the ceiling was centered around a depiction of the 12 apostles(门徒), Michelangelo had bigger plans: he would paint several scenes in Bible featuring over 300 figures.Like many other Italian Renaissance painters, he used a fresco technique, meaning he applied washes of paint to wet plaster(石灰泥). In order to create an illusion of depth, Michelangelo would remove some of the wet medium prior to painting. This method ended in visible “outlines” around his figures—a detail considered characteristic of the artist. As plaster dries quickly, Michelangelo worked in sections, applying planes of fresh plaster each day.Today, the Sistine Chapel remains both a popular tourist destination and highly religious site. Roughly 25,000 people view the spectacular ceiling each day, proving the lasting legacy of one of Michelangelo’s most well-known works and of the striking art of the High Renaissance.84.From paragraph 1, we know that Michelangelo ________.A. had a good knowledge of buildingB. had a particularly ambitious life goalC. was expert at sculptingD. stood above the chapel while painting85.Fresco painted by Michelangelo stands out for the following characteristics EXCEPT that _______.A. its production procedures are creativeB. the figures shown in the fresco are lifelikeC. it is large in size painted in black and whiteD. it shows a number of scenes in the Bible86.In making the fresco, Michelangelo would _______.A. create outlines around the figures in itB. apply all the fresh plaster in the beginningC. remove some paint from the wet plasterD. avoid making an illusion of depth87.Which one of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. The Sistine Chapel, named after Pope Sixtus IV, was built up in the late 15th century.B. The ceiling had partly been painted by other artists before Michelangelo started.C. It was at the age of 33 that Michelangelo finished the seemingly impossible task.D. The chapel maintained its religious function apart from being a scenic spot.(B)Italy has produced many brilliant minds who have made their mark on art history. During the Renaissance(文艺复兴), the Italian city-states were at the center of an incredible flowering of visual culture that would not only influence generations onward but would also redefine what it meant to be an artist. Painters and sculptors came to be seen not only as craftsmen, but also men of learning who could express something deeply personal. Then came the drama and intensity of the Baroque artists. Modern times brought more change, some artists explored deeply into their medium while others turned to political and social issues. All along the way, there were standout personalities who illuminated the concerns of their time. Check out some of the most interesting figures in Italian art.Leonardo da VinciMuch has been said about this true Renaissance man, who was not only a painter but a mathematician, scientist, engineer, inventor, architect and much, much more. His endless curiosity and imagination led him to dream up machines that were far ahead of his time, study anatomy(解刨学) in brand-new ways and, of course, create paintings and drawings that would impress people for many centuries. In his paintings, there is an overwhelming sense of the mystery of existence – the mystery that he sought to chase and understand.Michelangelo BuonarottiIn many ways, Michelangelo defined what it means to be an artist. Though he’s known for his paintings, he considered himself first and foremost a sculptor. Born and raised in a little town, he grew up to be a master of anatomy. He used the straining and twisting muscles of the human body to express his powerful vision of the world. His design of the Laurentian Library pioneered Mannerist architecture.Giovanni BelliniBellini was the Venetian of the Renaissance who took the medium of oil painting to a new expressive capacity. He was the pioneer of a technique where the colors were gradually built up in thin, translucent(半透明) layers. The end result is glossy, rich and shining like no other. In his paintings, you’ll find a kind of peaceful silence, lighted by gorgeous colors that seem to be lit from within.Artemisia GentileschiArtemisia is one of the great boundary-breaking painters of the Baroque era. Female artists of her time were confined to still life paintings and portraits, because it was considered improper for women to paint from the nude figure. But Artemisia wouldn’t let that stop her. At just 17, she broke taboos with her painting of Susanna and the Elders, in which she proudly displays a full-frontal nude(裸体) in the center of the frame. She was raped two years later by another painter and experienced physical sufferings during the investigation of the trial, but her struggles only fueled her artistic production as she turned out painting after painting of strong, defiant women.88.Which of the following group is the common point of the works of the artists mentioned above?A. Pioneer and originalB. Conservative but pioneerC. Powerful and beautifulD. Mysterious but direct89.What does “defiant” probably mean in the last paragraph?A. admirableB. challengingC. disrespectfulD. obedient90.Which one of the following statement is FALSE according to the passage?A. Giovanni was expert at making use of colors and was also a leader in artistic expression.B. As a master of anatomy, Michelangelo handled human bodies very well in his works.C. Despite their amazing sculptures, sculptors were seen as craftsman during the Renaissance.D. Leonardo da Vinci was curious and imaginative enough to stand ahead of his times.(C)“I’ve never met a human worth cloning,” says cloning expert Mark Westhusin from his lab at Texas A&M University. “It’s a stupid endeavor.” That’s an interesting choice of adjective, coming from a man who has spent millions of dollars trying to clone as 13-year-old dog named Missy. So far, he and his team have not succeed, though they have cloned two cows and expect to clone a cat soon. They just might succeed in cloning Missy this spring — or perhaps not for another five years. It seems the reproductive system of man’s best friend is one of the mysteries of modern science.Westhusin’s experience with cloning animals leaves him upset by all this talk of human cloning. In three years of work on the Missy project, he and the A&M team has failed over and over again. The wastage of eggs and the many fetuses(胎)may be acceptable when you’re dealing with cats or bulls, he argues, but not with humans. “Cloning is incredibly inefficient, and also dangerous,” he says.Even so, dog cloning is a commercial opportunity, with a nice research payoff. Ever since Dolly the sheep was cloned in 1997, Westhusin’s phone has been ringing with people calling in hopes of duplicating their cats and dogs, cattle and horses. “A lot of people want to clone pets, especially if the price is right,” says Westhusin. Cost is no obstacle for Missy’s mysterious billionaire owner; he’s put up $3.7 million so far to fund A&M’s research.Contrary to some media reports, Missy is not dead. The owner wants a twin to carry on Missy’s fine qualities after she does die. The prototype is, by all accounts, athletic, good-natured and super-smart. Missy’s master does not expect an exact copy of her. He knows her clone may not have her temperament. In a statement of purpose, Missy’s owner and the A&M team say they are “both looking forward to studying the ways that her clones differ from Missy.”Besides cloning a great dog, the project may contribute insight into the old question of nature vs. nurture. It could also lead to the cloning of special rescue dogs and many endangered animals. However, Westhusin is cautious about his work. He knows that even if he gets a dog pregnant, the offspring, should they survive, will face the problems shown at birth by other cloned animals: abnormalities like immature lungs and heart and weight problems~ “Why would you ever want to clone humans,” Westhusin asks, “when we’re not even close to getting it worked out in animals yet?”91.By cloning Missy, Mark Westhusin and A&M team attempt to ________.A. figure out the possibility of human cloningB. find out the differences between Missy and its cloneC. study why the prototype, Missy, is so athletic and smartD. show their love for lovely Missy since it has passed away92.It can be seen from the passage that dog cloning _________.A. was conducted long before the sheep cloningB. has gained an unexpected cold response from the societyC. has posed a great financial challenge to WesthusinD. can generate an enormous wealth of economic returns93.What is Westhusin’s attitude towards what he is doing?A. CarefulB. OptimisticC. PassiveD. Indifferent94.What can be learned from the passage?A. Current cloning techniques have proved quite adequate for human cloning.B. The outcome of Westhusin’s dog cloning project remains uncertain.C. Dangerous as it is, cloning is an incredibly efficient method.D. Westhusin thought it an interesting attempt to clone human beings.第II卷I. Yet, despite the obvious rewards of engaging in office politics—a better job, a raise, praise—many people are still unable—or unwilling—to “play the game.”“People assume that office politics involves some manipulative (工于心计的) behavior,” says Deborah Comer, an assistant professor of management at Hofstra University. “But politics derives from the word ‘polite’. It can mean lobbying and forming associations. It can mean being kind and helpful, or even trying to please your superior, and then expecting something in return.”In fact, today, experts define office politics as proper behavior used to pursue one’s own self-interest in the workplace. In many cases, this involves some form Of Socializing within the office environment—not just in large companies, but in small workplaces as well.“The first thing people are usually judged on is their ability to perform well on a consistent basis,’” says Neil P Lewis, a management psychologist. “But if two or three candidates are up for a promotion, each of whom has reasonably similar ability, a manager is going to promote the person he or she likes best. It’s simple human nature.”Yet, psychologists say, many employees and employers have trouble with the concept of politics in the office. Some people, they say, have an idealistic vision of work and what it takes to succeed. Still others associate politics with flattery (奉承), fearful that, if they speak up for themselves, they may appear to be flattering their boss for favors.Experts suggest altering this negative picture by recognizing the need for some self-promotion.81. “Office politics” (Line 2, Para. 4) is used in the passage to refer to ________.A) the code of behavior for company staffB) the political views and beliefs of office workersC) the interpersonal relationships within a companyD) the various qualities required for a successful career82. To get promoted, one must not only be competent but ________.A) give his boss a good impression B) honest and loyal to his companyC) get along well with his colleagues D) avoid being too outstanding83. Why are many people unwilling to “play the game” (Line 4, Para. 5)?A) They believe that doing so is impractical.B) They feel that such behavior is unprincipled.C) They are not good at manipulating colleagues.D) They think the effort will get them nowhere.84. The author considers office politics to be ________.A) unwelcome at the workplaceB) bad for interpersonal relationshipsC) indispensable to the development of company cultureD) an important factor for personal advancement85. It is the author’s view that _______.A) speaking up for oneself is part of human natureB) self-promotion does not necessarily mean flatteryC) hard work contributes very little to one’s promotionD) many employees fail to recognize the need of flattery( B )As Artificial Intelligence(AI) becomes increasingly sophisticated, there are growing concerns that robots could become a threat. This danger can be avoided, according to computer science professor Stuart Russell, if we figure out how to turn human values into a programmable code.Russell argues that as robots take on more complicated tasks, it’s necessary to translate our morals into AI language. For example, if a robot does chores around the house, you wouldn’t want it to put the pet cat in the oven to make dinner for the hungry children. “You would want that robot preloaded with a good set of values,” said Russell. Some robots are already programmed with basic human values. For example, mobile robots have been programmed to keep a comfortable distance from humans. Obviously there are cultural differences, but if you were talking to another person and they came up close in your personal space, you wouldn’t think that’s the kind of thing a properly brought-up person would do.It will be possible to create more sophisticated moral machines, if only we can find a wayto set out human values as clear rules.Robots could also learn values from drawing patterns from large sets of data on human behavior. They are dangerous only if programmers are careless. The biggest concern with robots going against human values is that human beings fail to so sufficient testing and they’ve produced a system that will break some kind of taboo(禁忌).One simple check would be to program a robot to check the correct course of action with a human when presented with an unusual situation. If the robot is unsure whether an animal is suitable for the microwave, it has the opportunity to stop, send out beeps, and ask for directions from a human. If we humans aren’t quite sure about a decision, we go and ask somebody else. The most difficult step in programming values will be deciding exactly what we believe in moral, and how to create a set of ethical rules. But if we come up with an answer, robots could be good for humanity.86. What does the author say about the threat of robots?A)It may constitute a challenge to computer progranmers.B)It accompanies all machinery involving high technology.C)It can be avoided if human values are translated into their language.D)It has become an inevitable peril as technology gets more sophisticated.87. What would we think of a person who invades our personal space according to the author?A)They are aggressive.B)They are outgoing.C)They are ignorant.D)They are ill-bred.88. How do robots learn human values?A)By interacting with humans in everyday life situations.B)By following the daily routines of civilized human beings.C)By picking up patterns from massive data on human behavior.D)By imitating the behavior of property brought-up human beings.89. What will a well-programmed robot do when facing an unusual situation?A)keep a distance from possible dangers.B)Stop to seek advice from a human being.C)Trigger its built-in alarm system at once.D)Do sufficient testing before taking action.90. What is most difficult to do when we turn human values into a programmable code?A)Determine what is moral and ethical.B)Design some large-scale experiments.C)Set rules for man-machine interaction.D)Develop a more sophisticated program.上海交通大学附属中学2019届高一分班考(英语)(答案)II.Grammar and Vocabulary1—10BDCBA BBCAD11—20CBAAB BDACC21—30BADDA CBBCD31—40AAACB ABCBC41—50DABBC CDCDC51—55BDABCII. 56—65ABC BD D AD BC C E A AB BIII 66--80CDBAB ADABC DADACIV. 每题两分81—85CABDB86—90CDCBA。

People travel for endless reasons, whether it’s to experience different cultures, see natural (41)of the world,or learn about heritage. All these ideas are exciting options, because in every situation, you will be (42) to something unfamiliar and life-changing.I recently had a discussion with someone about my student abroad experience. They listened as I recounted my (43) around Italy and my additional travels. “I would love to do something like that,” they said, “but I feel like everyone goes to Europe now. It’s not really that (44) anymore.”I was pretty shocked by such a statement.Since when was traveling anywhere not cool enough?Naturally, the older you get ,the more people you’re going to know, especially those who have traveled to (45) parts of the world. However, does standing underneath the Eiffel Tower have less value to me because so many travelers have done the exact same thing?Or climbing and taking a picture at the top of the Florence Duomo also means the decreased value? My answer:absolutely not.Reading travel blogs and (46) at photographs is helpful and enjoyable, but nothing close to (47) experiencing that place. The truth is,every new destination is unique, and it’s nearly impossible to make a “wrong” decision. It is important to focus on your own personal journey, not the experience of others.Every city, state, and country, has thousands of different things to (48) .The places you will visit all have fascinating people, different kinds of delicious food you’ve never tried before, and unbelievable history that will blow your mind.Travelling will nevertheless change you and leave an imprint on the way you see the world—no matter where you go.Whether the destinations we desire are (49) simple or obscure(不清楚的)in the eyes of others, every experience has its own unique value.Keep your adventures (50) while also taking advantage of the opinions and advice of others. In every new destination, you will find a new part of yourself.Truly,no destination is the wrong place to go.III.Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections:For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,B,C and D.Fill in each blank with the word pr phrase that best fits the context.Who cares if people think wrongly that the Internet has had more important influences than the washing machine? Why does it matter that people are more impressed by the most 51 changes? It would not matter if these misjudgments were just a matter of peop le’s opinions. However, they have real impacts,as they result in 52 use of scarce resources. The eager embrace of the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) revolution, represented by the Internet, has made some rich countries wrongly conclude that making things is so “yesterday” that they should try to live on 53 .This belief in “post-industrial society” has led those countries to 54 their manufacturing sector(制造业)with negative consequences for their economies.Even more worryingly, the 55 with the Internet by people in rich countries has moved the international community to worry about the “digital 56 ” between the rich countries and the poor countries. This has led companies and individuals to donate money to developing countries to buy computer equipment and Internet facilities. The question, 57 ,is whether this is what the developing countries need the most.Perhaps giving money for those less 58 things such as digging wells, extending electricity networks and making more affordable washing machines would have improved people’s lives more than giving every child a laptop computer or setting up Internet centers in rural villages.I am not saying that those things are necessarily more important, but these generous donators don’t seem to give priority to people’s 59 needs. Rather, they have rushed into fancy programs without carefully assessing the relative long-term costs and benefits of 60 uses of their money. In yet another example,an obsession with the new has led people to believe that the latest changes in the technologies of communications and transportation are so revolutionary that now we live in a “borderless world”. 61 ,in the last twenty years or so,many people have come to believe that whatever change is happening today is the result of great technological progress, goingagainst which will be like trying to turn the clock back.Believing in such a world, many governments have 62 some of the very necessary regulations on cross-border flows of capital, labor and goods, with poor results.Understanding technological trends is very important for 63 designing economic policies, both at the national and the international levels, and for making the right career choices at the 64 level. However, our blind faith in the latest, and our 65 of what has already become common, can, and has,led us in all sorts of wrong directions.51. The ancient Romans would often avoidcapture by throwing off their capes when fleeing so that they could run more quickly.6.hooligan It is believed that this term originated from a man’s last name. The man, whose first name was Patrick, terrorized a section of London with his family in the 1890s.7.broke Many banks in post-Renaissance Europe issued small “borrower’s tiles(瓦片)” to their customers.Like credit cards, these tiles were imprinted with the owner’s name and credit limit, and the name of the bank.In order to borrow money, the customer had to present the tile to the bank teller who would compare the imprinted credit limit with how much the customer had already borrowed. If the borrower was over the limit, the teller broke the tile on the spot.8.genuine From the Latin, originally meant “placed on the knees”.In Ancient Rome,a father legally claimed his newborn child by sitting in front of his family and placing the child on his knee.9.tip The popular explanation of the origin of this word is that it is an acronym(首字母缩略词)meaning “To Insure Promptness”,th at is,to make sure the service in,e.g.,a restaurant,is fast. This is incorrect. The word was underworld slang from the early 1600s,meaning “to pass on a small sum of money.”10.addict This was the Latin name for a slave given to Roman soldiers to reward them for performance in battle.Eventually, this term was applied to anyone who was a slave to anything,e.g.,a drug.66.Which pair of words originated from the names of two people?A.Addict and escape.B.Jeans and escape.C.hooligans and jeans.D.Hooligan and addict.67.The Singapore is most likely to issue the information above?cation Commission.B.Health Department.C.Transportation Bureau.D.Tourism Bureau.(C)When you’re traveling abroad, trying to find out who to tip is never straightforward and neither is trying to work out the exact number. To make things even more complicated, the rules for tipping vary greatly from country to country. Also, within each country the rules can change,so what was appropriate last time you visited your favorite country may be completely inappropriate the next time you go.However, here are some general guidelines which might help you on your journeys. You face your first dilemma as soon as you land at the airport—the taxi ride.Taxi drivers generally do expect tips, but rather than there being an exact amount, people round up the fare or just tell the driver to keep the change.Your next encounter is with the hotel porter and you know he’s expecting a tip,but the problem is trying to figure out how much.It seems that in many countries round the world $1 per bag would be an appropriate amount. Then,of course, you have to eat.In some countries such as Ire land,Brazil,Poland and Portugal, the customary tip in restaurants is 10-15% unless a service change is included,so the first rule of thumb is always check the bill.In other countries such as France,Italy,Germany,Australia and Spain, where a 10-15% service charge is either very common or compulsory, you may want to leave an additional tip if you think the service was particularly good, but it certainly isn’t obligatory. However,in some countries it may seem strange if you do leave a tip.In Japan, for example, the waitress might be insulted if you tipped her.In Thailand,if you left the tip,the restaurant staff probably wouldn’t be offended, but you might be pursued down the street by someone thinking you’d forgotten to take your change. In New Zealand, although it’s unlikely anyone would chase after you, you’d definitely get some odd looks if you left a tip.And your problem with tipping isn’t over when you leave the restaurant.Next you discover the tour guide, the hairdresser and the toilet attendant are all expecting a tip as well, but again, how much?Perhaps the best option in these cases is to ask the local people what is acceptable or observe what others do.Of course, you could simply play safe and tip everyone you meet.72.The word “dilemma” (in paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to .A.a difficult situationB.an early opportunityC.a high expectationD.an exact explanation73.What does the writer suggest tourists do in countries like Brazil?A.Never tip waiters or waitress because they may be offended.B.Play safe and leave a tip about 12% percent of the bill after each meal.C.Make sure whether a service charge is included in the bill before giving tips.D.Always check whether you have kept all your change before leaving the restaurant.74.People needn’t tip waiters in .A.Ireland and FranceB.Germany and JapanC.Poland and ItalyD.Thailand and New Zealand75.What is the passage mainly about?A.Advantages of tipping.B.Rules of tipping.C.Possible origins of tipping.D.Different opinions on tipping.KEYS1.be alive with amazing Immediately after __87__ pairs of jeans are dropped through another chute, the “outbox,” they disappear from the list in the app. Purchases at Hointer are made with a swipe (刷卡) of a credit card. And interacting with a salesperson is optional! This allows Hointer to hire fewer people and focus on their ultimate goal: developing __88__ that supports a retail revolution.Men’s clothing retailer Bonobos has __89__ a more personalized shopping experience. Most of the time I am simply doing finger exercises, another form of piano practice without the beautiful tones. Sometimes, however, I receive a gift, reminding me of the gifts in my life. The following passage is one of those gifts.Peter Jones is a 92yearold, short, calm and proud man. Every morning he is fully dressed by eight o’clock, with his hair fashionably combed and face perfectly shaved, even though he is unable to see. He would move to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After hours of waiting patiently in the entrance hall of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he moved his walker skillfully to the elevator, the nurse provided a visual description of his tiny room. “I love it,” he stated with the ebullience of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new pet dog.“Mr. Jones, you haven’t been to the room,” said the nurse.“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” he replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged ...it’s how I arrange my mind. I have already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice: I can spend the day in bed complaining of the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as I am alive, I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away.”May each of our days continue to be a gift.94.What do we know about Mr. Jones?A. How about this weather, huh?”“Well, I guess we can always use the rain.”What’s that? This story? Oh, just a little look at small talk. You know; those seemingly meaningless conversations you have dozens of times a day. Maybe you’re waiting for the elevator.Or in a line at the bank. It all seems pretty trivial. Idle chatter about traffic doesn’t do much more than fill the air with empty words that are quickly forgotten. But you should know that small talk actually has a big place in our lives.Pat Oliver, assistant professor on arts, says that, “Left unchecked, small talk can be an invasion. It’s so powerful. It does something to you.” “Every morning after spending an hour and a half on the freeway I start the day with small talk with my secretary,” Oliver says, “If I don’t make small connection with another person, I can’t work.”What causes it? As a rule, you’re either trying to force something into your life, or you’re using conversation as an invisible force field to keep them out. You can be wanting to connect with another person, and small talk is your introduction to more meaningful conversation. The way people use small talk is usually determined by where they happen to be at the time.Take the elevator, for instance. Now there’s prime territory. Nobody knows anyone and there’s no reason no start a conversation, but invariably, someone does. “Making conversation in such peaceful social settings”, according to Oliver, “can confirm your territory. Now it’s time to use small talk as a way of making others feel more comfortable around you, so you don’t look silly standing by the food table alone all night.98.“Small talk”, as interpreted by the author, _______.A. has no real function in communication at allB. is usually meaningless and therefore uselessC. is not as idle as it may seem to beD. is restricted to certain topics only99.According to the author, small talk is often used _______.A. to invade other’s private affairsB. to share a secret between intimate friendsC. to open and maintain channels of communicationD. to protect one’s own privacy100.Why is small talk described as “non-threatening talk in a threatening situation”?A. How can one measure it reliably? An analysis is issued a sample of data a Texas school district. Experts argue convincingly that teacher effectiveness should be measured by students’ gains on standardized tests: Mr. Smith is presumably a better teacher than Ms. Brown if his students consistently improve their test scores more than hers do.Though this approach is appealing, there are tricky issues. For example, what if Ms. Brown teaches in a school where students score so high there is little room for improvement? The authors try to correct for this problem, as well as other sorts of measurement issues, to generate a measurement of teacher effectiveness. The paper is primarily concerned with how this measure is related to other observable characteristics. The first finding is that there is a large variation in teacher effectiveness: some teachers consistently have a larger impact on their students’ achievement than others.Second, easily observable characteristics like having a master’s degree or a passing score on the teacher certification exam are not correlated with teacher effectiveness. Then what does matter? The most important single influence is experience: first-year teachers are much less effective than others. The second year is significantly better, and by the fourth year, most teachers hit their stride. It is not entirely clear whether this experience effect is learning by doing (the more you teach, the more effective you become) or survival of the fittest (those who are not good at teaching tend to drop out early). From my reading of the paper, both effects appear important and there is no simple answer. The data do suggest, however, that teacher effectiveness is pretty clear by the end of the second year, so the information to make an informed decision is available at that time. The authors also investigate the contentious issue of racial matching of students and teachers. Here they find strong evidence that minority teachers tend to be more effective with minority students. Again, it is unclear whether this is because of a role model effect (students respond better of their own race) or an empathy effect (teachers empathize better with students of their own race) or something else entirely. The authors also look at teacher mobility. There is some evidence that teachers who quit teaching or switch schools tend to be below average in effectiveness. This is consistent with the survival-of-the-fittest model.106.The author of this passage holds the view that __________.A. teachers will perform better with time passingB. ineffective teachers should leave earlier rather than laterC. teacher’s effectiveness is apparent after a couple of yearsD. a master’s degree will improve teacher’s effectiveness107.Why do black teachers tend to be more effective with black students?A.
