Topic 5: Studying AbroadNowadays, more and more Chinese people send their children to study in universities, or high schools, even primary schools, abroad. What do you think of this trend?Good morning, everyone! My topic is “Studying Abroad”.In recent years, studying abroad has flourished. Every year thousands of scholars and students have gone to foreign countries to study. According to the data released by the National Department of Education, there are more than six hundred thousand Chinese students choose to study abroad. And meanwhile many people are sparing no effort in applying for going abroad. However, is studying abroad really helpful? I think the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.Firstly, when studying abroad ,students may spend a great deal of living expenses, especially those who study abroad from primary school. Their expenses must be hard to afford. Though someone can win a scholarship at college, the majority of peers can’t receive the scholarship. Because of the high-cost, many oversea students have to work for a living, and will find it impossible for them to pay all attention to studying.Secondly, the most serious problem is the language barriers. They have to spend much time learning a foreign language and even if they have learned the language, they still can' t understand thoroughly what the foreigners and teachers say just because of the unfamiliar culture background and social customs. So, if they are not full of courage, flexibility, and determination, they are most likely to fail and learn nothing eventually. In addition, they will face many difficulties and challenges of living away from their parents and homeland. For example, medical insurance, daily food, clothes, house rent, transportation and so on are not easy to deal with. Finally, we can't guarantee whether they will have a correct understanding of our Chinese traditional culture if they stay abroad from a young age. What’s worse, they can’t eat Authentic Chinese food. To sum up, considering the shortcomings of studying abroad, I think it is of benefit to study in our own country. That’s all. Thanks for your listening.。

Topic One Studying Abroad

Topic One Studying Abroad

Topic One Studying AbroadI. Pre-class Introduction ReadingSince China's opening up to the outside world, millions of Chinese people have been abroad1 to further2 their study. With the stable and rapid progress of the Chinese economy, thousands of Chinese students are striving to study abroad every year at their own expense4. What's more, there is an obvious tendency5 that more and more young students are struggling to study abroad. Nowadays, college graduates and middle school students make up a large proportion of the students abroad. Many students begin to set foot in strange countries, with much curiosity6, excitement and longing. They hope to study hard there and master the most advanced technology and knowledge so that they can pave the way for their future achievements. Certainly, their ultimate goal is to find a high-salary and comfortable job in other countries or come back to fulfill7 their potential. However, the life and study in other countries is not as easy as they have expected. To most students abroad, it's very difficult to live and study well in other countries, because of the large differences in culture and language between the two countries. A few lively and outgoing top-notch students become diffident9 and reserved10 because they can't catch up with the native students and their grades also decline greatly. As a result, a number of students can't bear the tremendous11pressure or overcome the great difficulties, so they come back without finishing their studies. Even though some students abroad complete their studies, these days, they can't find good jobs when they come back for many reasons. One reason is that there are a number of people with the same degrees as theirs at home. And sometimes their degrees are not so solid as the degrees at home. Why study abroad?Last year, 129,770 students from the United States studied abroad. Does that number surprise you? These students already know the benefits of study abroad. You may be wondering why you should study abroad. Here are some answers for you.To broaden your horizons15 and gain a new perspective16Life in the USA is pretty much the same day in, day out. Life overseas makes you see your everyday world in a whole new light. You don't even realize it, but our culture shapes the way we view the world and affects us every minute of the day. Differences in culture are more than just differences in language, food, clothing, and art. Cultural differences reflect deeply ingrained17 perceptions18about the world and about one's way of life, and these perceptions are radically19 different from one culture to the next. Americans don't tend to venture outside the confines of their day-to-day lives. Students who study abroad return home with a broadened and less biased perspective toward other cultures. You'll be more sensitive20to what is happening in the news from places around the world. You'll be able to relate better to other students on campus who are from different countries. To get to know another culture and way of lifeThis is a valuable commodity in today's global society. Potential employers will be impressed that you have a unique perspective on not only another society, but your own as well. Having had an overseas study experience shows that you're motivated, inquisitive, and willing to try new things-all very appealing21 qualities in an employee. People who study abroad tend to be willing to take risks, willing to put themselves in unusual situations, able to solve problems under uniquecircumstances, and able to overcome the fear of the unknown. You'll also be setting yourself apart from other American students.II. InterviewTopic: Do you want to study abroad?Procedures:1. The class should be divided into groups around 10 students2. Most of the students who are ready to go abroad do not have adequate proficiency in the language spoken there. As a result, on arriving there, they will find it difficult to understand what the instructors say. Besides, for lack of knowledge of the customs of the local people, they may constantly run into trouble in dealing with various situations. Inevitably, misunderstandings often arise. Furthermore, the tuition and the cost of living is much higher than that in our country, which may add more burden to their family finance.

Topic 1:Understanding Chinese Culture and TraditionWhat is a Confucian lifestyle? What can people of other cultures learn from it?Confucian lifestyle is regarded as a lifestyle to become a good and responsible person. Usually, it means that we should be more focused on education, more respectful of old people, better able to subordinate private needs to public good, more responsible to the needs of family, more polite in our daily lives, and more hardworking. No matter where you are from, you can learn a lot from Confucian lifestyle. Initially, its focus is on the world itself, as a place where ultimate meaning is found. It can help people find the sacred in the relationships of ordinary life, such as in preparing and sharing meals with family and friends, in harmonious and respectful relations in the workplace. Then, Confucian lifestyle gives people a chance to learn to become virtuous by seeing others and by being inspired by their example, which can help people all over the world grow in the arts of becoming good people. What’s more,Confucianism is a leaning toward harmony as life’s highest ideal. The harmony has a democratic spirit, respectful of the voices of individuals as well as groups. Therefore, living in a Confucian lifestyle can help people of other cultures have a better understanding of harmony and enrich the practice of other cultures.Topic 2:Gaining a Foothold in the Business WorldWhat is more important for an enterprise in order to be successful, linear thinking or lateral thinking?Lateral thinking is more suitable for people with a short attention span while linear thinking is preferred by people who can stay focused. For different stages of an enterprise, linear thinking and lateral thinking have different importance. In a start-up, lateral thinking is more important. Lateral thinking calls for solving problems with indirect and creative approaches, and always calls for expanding possibilities, which is quite necessary in a start-up. In a start-up, the entrepreneur is constantly being pulled off course when plans don’t go as planned. Lateral thinking will help entrepreneurs come up with appropriate measures to deal with difficulties. In mature companies, linear thinking is more important. Linear thinking is based on logic, rules and rationality. It follows step-by-step patterns, which makes it possible for people to stick to the plan as required. Therefore, linear thinking is required in more mature companies where getting several hundred or several thousand people to stick to a plan is absolutely necessary to get anything done. Lateral thinking and linear thinking are of different importance in different stages of an enterprise. However, only an enterprise has both can it be successful and develop.Topic 3:Smart Technology, Smart LifeWhat benefits can we enjoy from technological innovations? What challenges have been brought about by evolving technologies? With the development of society, technological innovations have become inevitable. Technological innovations also bring us many benefits. First of all, technological innovations facilitate our lives. We can enjoy all kinds of movies on TV and keep in touch with our family with mobile phones. The Internet connects people all over the world. Secondly, technological innovations promote enterprises to improve efficiency to meet the requirements of economic development. They can improve the economic benefits of enterprises, reduce costs and open up markets. In addition, technological innovations are important forces to promote the development of society, which promote the rapid increase of social wealth and the fundamental improvement of people's lives. However, evolving technologies also brought a lot of challenges. Initially, although evolving technologies facilitate our lives, they make people lazier. When doing some things, people often choose technologies instead of doing it by themselves. Then, one of the most serious problems about evolving technologies is the shortage of outstanding people. Without talents, the huge manpower and resources of technology can’t promote scientific advances. Besides, innovation is still the biggest challenge. Only scientific and technological innovation can fundamentally cause revolutions again and again, thus promoting the development of science and technology.Topic 4: Great Men, Great MindsWhy is Du Fu called one of China’s greatest poets? What can we still learn from Du Fu’ poetry nowadays? The Tang Dynasty is regarded as a golden age of classic Chinese poetry, with thousands of poets producing an incredible quantity of works.Du Fu is called one of China’s greatest poets. I think there are three reasons. First of all, Du Fu is highly accomplished in poetry. No matter from themes or expression skills, Du Fu brought advantages of the predecessors into full play. He not only inherited the advantages of his predecessors, but also created something new in the summary. Secondly, Du Fu's poems are epic poems, which record the situation of the Tang Dynasty's prosperity and decline period for us. His poems combined personal experience with the times and made his life a reflection of history. Finally,Du Fu is a poet who cares about the country and the people. Du Fu used his poems to reflect the sufferings of the people, care about social problems and express his feelings. From Du Fu's poems, the most intuitive thing is to know the history of the Tang Dynasty. His poems widely reflected the social reality. Then, reading Du Fu's poems can make us feel a patriotic heart. We should learn to love our motherland. Moreover, Du Fu learned from predecessors, summed up his literary and artistic experience, and formed his own unique poetic style and artistic features. We should also learn from others like Du Fu to sum up and improve ourselves.Topic 5: Studying AbroadWhat are the benefits and drawbacks of studying abroad? What should be taken into consideration when you plan to study abroad? With the development of society, more people choose to study abroad in order to gain better education, which has become an increasingly prevalent trend. It’s generally accepted that studying abroad has many advantages over studying at home. Initially, there is no doubt that our foreign languages and communication skills will improve rapidly. Furthermore, students can expand their knowledge and gain qualifications that open the door to better job opportunities. Additionally, there are more choices to understand various cultures and customs, which will broaden our horizons. Nevertheless, some drawbacks should be paid attention. Above all, finance is the most difficult part for many families. What’s worse, no one knows whether overseas students will adapt to the local environment and blend into the local crowd. When I plan to study abroad, I will take a lot into consideration. For example, which university is best for my development and career planning, how can I adjust my habits to the life abroad, whether I can communicate with others in English fluently, how should I plan my spending and whether my family can afford it. Only taking into consideration my actual situation can I make the right choice.Topic 6: Experiencing the Charm of NatureWhat is the importance of coexistence of humans and nature? What should we do to maintain this coexistence? As we all know, coexistence of humans and nature is very important. For humans, it is of great importance to the survival of human beings and providing a livable environment for human beings. In the ecological environment of nature, all kinds of creatures are interdependent. If the nature is damaged, the balance of the whole natural ecological chain will be threatened, and the survival of human beings will be threatened. At the same time, excessive damage to nature will increase the pollution of human living environment. For the nature, coexistence of humans and nature is the most powerful measure to protect nature. With the development of society, human factor is the main factor of destroying the environment. If human beings live in harmony with nature, it will minimize the damage to nature and other creatures. In my opinion, we should maintain the coexistence from three aspects. Firstly, we should establish the concept of respecting and protecting nature. Nature provides us with many conveniences for our daily necessities, such as food, cloth and house. Secondly,it is necessary to love other creatures because the earth is the home of human and other creatures. Thirdly,we should protect the environment from everyday things to reduce pollution. For example, don’t litter. Only each of us can achieve these points can we truly live in harmony with nature.。

Type A personalities are motivated by external sources (instead of by inner motivation), such as material reward and appreciation from others. Type A folks experience a constant sense of opposition, wariness, and apprehension--they are always ready for battle. And anyone can imagine how this constant (and very exhausting) existence would deplete reserves of contentment and happiness and disrupt personal equilibrium. Although the literature is somewhat inconsistent because of problems with the conceptualization and definition of Type A behavior patter, it has been linked to higher risks of cardiovascular diseases. The risks seemed to be reduced with intervention aimed at reducing Type A behavior. Indeed, those with a high Type A score would be happier and healthier if they were to file down the jagged edges of their personality.

英语 _Unit 7 Studying abroad:what you need to know

英语 _Unit 7 Studying abroad:what you need to know

Unit 7 Studying abroad: what you needto knowSection OneStep 1. Words to the teacherAs education is becoming increasingly globalized, students now have more options and choices, including going abroad as exchange or international students. This is perhaps happening in many parts of China. This unit is intended for students to think about their education in a broader context. It leads students to think about the positive and negative side of being an exchange or international student. In particular, students should be encouraged to discuss the issues from an international, inter-educational, and inter-cultural perspective.Step 2. Reading1. Before reading the text, it is important for the teacher to activate the students' background knowledge of the topic. The KWL(Ogle, 1989) strategy/would work well with this unit.2. The KWL activity should be done in class with books closed. Divide the class into groups. Hand out a large sheet of paper to each group. Divide a large piece of paper into 3 parts. In the first section write KNOW (What we Know), the second section write WANT (What we Want to Know) and in the last section write LEARNED (What we Learned).3. Tell the class they need to write the advantages of studying abroad in North America. Perhaps they know someone who studied abroad or have read something about it. When all the groups have completed this column, ask one person to report from each group.4. Now ask the students to focus on the second column: What we want to know.5. The students need to brainstorm ideas about what information they would like to know about studying abroad. Ask each group to report to the class their ideas.6. Using the same groups as in the previous activity, each group must read the text together and choose 7 unfamiliar words that the group wants to learn. For each word the students must answer the following questions (Riddell, 2001): Where did you find the word? (Provide sentence) What doyou think the word means in context? Why do you think the class should learn this word?7. After reading the text, have each group report their list of words to the class. The teacher records all of the words on the blackboard. With the whole class choose ten words to form the class list. Display these words in the classroom. Refer to the words as often as possible during the unit, asking students to explain the word or use the word in a sentence.Section TwoStep 1: Build your skills1. Build your comprehensionThis section can be 'assigned for homework or as an in-class activity.Answers:(1) Fill in the chart.Work with the Ss to fill in the chart by brainstorming or going back t the first reading of the unit.2. According to the text, culture shock occurs when students become more aware of the differences between the host country and their home. They become homesick and the initial excitement turns to frustration as they struggle to adjust to their new environment.3. (personal opinion)4. (personal question)Step 2. Build your vocabulary1. Before opening the book and matching the definitions, write the 5phrases on the board: be aware of , deal with , take for granted, rely on , wear off.2. Divide the class into groups and ask each group to locate the 5 phrases in the context of the story. With the class discuss what the words mean in the context of the story.
