He's been teaching me the strokes and I'm still pretty messy at it but I'm practicing!Another tradition I find fascinating is paper cutting, which uses scissors and a few folds to cut intricate designs out of paper. Simple red paper is transformed into delicate works of art with things like flowers, animals, or symbols. It's amazing how creative people can get with just paper and scissors. I made a cute paper cutting of a panda for Chinese New Year once. Not as pretty as the professionals but I tried my best!I'm also obsessed with Chinese folk tales and legends. There are so many fun stories that have been passed down for ages and ages. Stories about mythical beasts, heroic warriors, magical objects, and more. My favorite is the legend of Mulan, the brave female warrior who disguised herself as a man to take her father's place in the army. So cool and inspiring! Reading the tales helps me learn about the wisdom and history of China.Another thing I love is traditional Chinese music. It has such a unique, beautiful sound compared to modern music. The melodies are created using stringed instruments like the guqin and pipa, wind instruments like the dizi flute, and percussion instruments like the yunluo gong. The sounds just flow togetherso peacefully. My auntie plays the guzheng, which is a huge set of strings stretched over a wooden base. I could listen to her practice for hours!Everything in Chinese arts and culture is so meaningful and intricate. I'm glad I get to learn about and appreciate these traditions as I get older.LanguageOkay, one last thing - I have to talk about the Chinese language because it's just so fascinating! I don't speak it perfectly yet, but I'm learning from my parents and grandparents. There are so many components that make Chinese unique:For one, Chinese is a tonal language. That means the same basic sound can mean different things depending on the pitch - whether you say it with a flat tone, a rising tone, etc. My grandma quizzes me by saying words and I have to guess the tone. I mess that up a lot!Another crazy thing is that there are thousands upon thousands of individual characters in the writing system. Many characters actually combine two or more root characters to form a new word with related meaning. So there are endless combinations of characters you can make. Awhile ago, I triedwriting out as many characters as I could remember...and I got to around 400 before giving up! It's ambitious to learn them all but I'm working on it.What I do love is that each character contains a tiny painting or illustration inside it. The characters are like little works of art that also represent words, objects, or ideas. How cool! It makes reading and writing so much more fun and beautiful. I'm fascinated by which components go into making each character.I also enjoy the rhythmic flow of sentences in Chinese. The word order is back to front compared to English - for example in English you say "I eat rice" but in Chinese it's "I rice eat." Kind of wacky but it starts to feel natural after awhile.Overall, the language is extremely rich and nuanced. I'm proud to know some basics of it as part of my heritage. I really hope I can become fluent one day to fully appreciate the depth and art behind the language.Well, those are just some of my favorite elements of Chinese culture - the food, festivals, arts, and language. Here are some of my favorite parts of Chinese culture:Chinese FestivalsI love the many fun festivals that are celebrated in China! My favorite is definitely Chinese New Year. The celebrations last for 15 days, from the eve of the new year until the Lantern Festival. Everything is decorated in red and gold, which are considered lucky colors. People put up lanterns, decorations, and red couplets with good luck messages on their doors.On Chinese New Year's Eve, we have a huge reunion dinner with all of our family. We eat lots of delicious foods like dumplings, noodles, fish, and sweet rice balls. The dumplings have lucky meanings - they look like ancient Chinese money. The noodles are nice and long, which symbolizes a long life. We kids get red envelopes filled with money from our parents andgrandparthe family gathers to set off firecrackers and fireworks at midnight to ring in the new year. So imaginative!My mom has read me the classic novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms about the warring kingdoms and the 108 heroes of the Marshes, and Journey to the West about the Monkey King's journey to India. The stories have larger than life characters, exciting adventures, and valuable lessons about bravery, loyalty, and righteousness.I hope to read all the original books in Chinese when I'm older and a better reader. For now, I have to settle for thekid-friendly picture book versions! But I never get tired of hearing these classic Chinese tales.The Chinese LanguageFinally, one of the most special parts of Chinese culture is the language itself. I think it's so cool that Chinese has logographic characters instead of an alphabet. And each character has a deep meaning and history behind it.For example, the character for "woman" (女nǚ) looks like a woman kneeling down. Isn't that neat? The character for "family" (家jiā) combines the character for "roof" on top of the character for "pig" - because a home with a roof and a pig meant you were wealthy back then. And I really admire people who can read and write thousands of these intricate characters.Mandarin is the language I speak at home with my parents.
