Check yourself by answering “yes” or “no” to these questions:a.Do you move your lips when reading silently?b.Do you point to those words with your fingers as you read?c.Do you move your head from side to side as you read?d.Do you read one word at a time?If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, start at once to break the habit. If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then if your lips move, you will know it and stop them moving. If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then you won’t have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head, place your chin in one hand, and hold your head still. If you read no more than one or two or three words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to take in more words at each glance when your eyes are traveling across the lines of words.Even if you do read fairly fast now, you can learn to read even faster. As you probably have been told, the secret of fast reading is to take in whole groups of words at each glance. Read ingroups and force your eyes along the lines of words as fast as you can make them go. Anyone who practices doing these two things will be able to read faster.51. say the auxin has an indirect effect on buds(芽)on the side of the stem to prevent branching. These buds themselves also produce auxin. The research suggests that to grow, they have to be able to export the hormone into the main stem. But the flow from the stem tip prevents them from doing this. The researchers wanted to find out how this blocking happens.Professor Prusinkiewicz is on leave in Australia, but he sent us an e-mail suggesting a simple way to understand the process.Think of a major road crowded with traffic. So many cars are on the main road that the cars on the side roads cannot enter. The stem is like the crowded main road. The new research shows that the buds on the side cannot export their auxin into the main stem because it is too full. But if that main shoot is pruned(修剪),other buds below it can start exporting. They are no longer prevented from growing.Ottoline Leyser from the University of York says that after a plant is pruned, all the inhibited(被抑制的)shoot tips compete with each other to grow.In doing this, the branches influence each other’s growth.Nearby shoot tips are more likely to affect each other than those that are far apart from each other.Professor Leyser says the strongest branches grow best, wherever they may be on the plant. The study found that the main shoot grows the best of all not because of its position at the top of the plant, but mostly because it got there first.59.The underlined part “two continents” in Paragraph 2 refers to“__________”.A.Asia and AfricaB.Africa and EuropeC.North America and EuropeD.Australia and Europe60.Professor Prusinkiewicz compares the cars on the side roads to __________.A.plant stems B.plant budsC.the leaves of a plant D.the roots of a plant61.To make the buds on the side of the stem to grow better, the main shoot should __________.A.be cut offB.be protectedC.be watered as much as possibleD.be given much auxin62.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A.Researchers have recently found out that the growing tip of a plant produces hormones.B.Auxin has a direct effect on buds to keep branches from growing.C.Buds on the side of the stem can’t produce hormones.D.In order to grow, the buds on the side of the stem export the hormones into the main stem.63.Which of the following may be the best title for this passage?A.Why shoot tips grow fast?B.When and how to prune plants?C.Scientists help cut the mystery behind pruningD.The great scientist—Prezemyslaw PrusinkiewiczDThe success of Pickwick Papers made Dickens very popular. He suddenly found himself at huge success an d was regarded as a comedy masterpiece.“If I were to live a hundred years and write novels in each,I should never be so proud of any of them as I am of Pickwick.”It has been said of Dickens that he gripped(控制)the imagination of his readers because his imagination gripped himself. The people in his works were so real that they could make him laugh or cry. When writing Oliver Twist he said that he could not rest until Fagin, the wrong-doer,had been hanged.Dicken’s marriage to Catherine Hagarth, with whom he had nine children, ended unhappily in 1858.He started to travel about giving readings of his works. His interest in theatre gave his novels the qualities that made them suitable for reading aloud on the stage.A tiring travel to the United States affected his health. On June 9,1870,when he was working on a new novel,he died,as he had wished. He said he wanted to die working.64.It seems clear that Dickens became a famous novelist ______.A.because of his social But how manykids can say their paper airplanes have been built life-size and then flown? At least one: 12-year-old Arturo Veldenegro of Tucson, Arizona, who won the Pima Air& Space Museum’s first annual Great Paper Airplane Project Fly-Off in March 2012.“The purpose of the competition is to inspire and draw kids’interest in science and flight,”says Tim Vimmerstedt, director of the museum.About 150 kids entered the competition. The young designers learned about how airplanes fly and then set to work designing their own planes.Arturo designed and built his airplane. When hen was finished, he took his plane to the flight area and let it fly, outdistancing the other competitors in all age groups. At last, Arturo’s airplane flew the farthest---more than 75 feet!As the winner, Arturo got to meet with a team of engineers, which took his design and made a bigger one. The new paper airplane might have been the largest one ever built! Arturo named his large paper airplane Arturo’s Desert Eagle.Later a helicopter tried to lift the paper airplane over the Arizona desert, but it was unsuccessful. Engineers worked for eight hours to repair it for a second try. This time, the helicopter managed to raise it to 2700 feet and then set the plane free.Arturo watched as his plane flew through the sky at speeds of up to 98 miles per hour for 10 seconds before falling to pieces.“I felt happy but sad,” Arturo says, “ It flew really well, but it was sad to see it destroyed.”But that wasn’t the end of Arturo’s Desert Eagle. Born in Sweden in 1926, Kamprad was a natural businessman. As a child, he enjoyed selling things and made small profits from selling matches, seeds, and pencils in his community. When Kamprad was 17, his father gave him some money as a reward fro his good grades. Naturally he used it to start up a business—IKEA.IKEA’s name comes from Kamprad’s initials(I.K.) and teh place where he grew up (‘E’ and ’A’). Today IKEA is known for its modern, minimalist furniture, but it was not a furniture company in the beginning. Rather, IKEA sold all kinds of miscellaneous goods.Kamprad’s wares included anything that he could sell for profits at discounted prices, including watches, pens and stockings.IKEA first began to sell furniture through a mail-order catalogue in 1947. The furniture was all designed and made by manufacturers near Kamprad’s home. Initial sales were very encouraging, so Kamprad expanded the product line. Furniture was such a successful aspect of the business that IKEA became solely a furniture company in 1951.In 1953 IKEA opened its first showroom in Almhult, Sweden. IKEA is known today for its spacious stores with furniture in attractive settings, but in the early 1950s, people ordered from catalogues. Thus response to the first showroom was overwhelming people loved being able to see and try the furniture before buying it. This led to increased sales and the company continued to thrive. By 1955, IKEA was designing all its own furniture. In 1956 Kamprad saw a man disassembling(拆卸) a table to make it easier to transport. Kamprad was inspired. The man had given him a great idea flat packaging. Flat packaging would mean lower shipping costs for IKEA and lower prices for customers. IKEA tried it and sales soared. The problem was that peoplehad to assemble furniture themselves, but over time, even this grew into an advantage for IKEA. Nowadays, IKEA is often seen as having connotations (内涵) of self-sufficiency. This image has done wonders for the company, leading to better sales and continued expansion.Today there are over 200 stores in 32 countries. Amazingly, Ingvar Kamprad has managed to keep IKEA a privately-held company. In 2004 he was named the world’s richest man. He currently lives in Switzerland and is retired from the day-to-day operations of IKEA. Every developing economist knows it. The World Bank knows it. The education of girls is the surest way to reduce poverty. The reason is simple. All the evidence shows that taking girls out of the fields and homes, and putting them behind desks, raises economic productivity, lowers infant and maternal(产科) death rate, reduces birth rates, and improves environmental management. Why, then, are 90 million primary school-age girls around the world not in school? For the same reason that when Charles Dickens was writing David Copperfield 150 yeas ago girls were absent from the British education system : Men in power mostly prefer it that way, or are not interested enough in changing the situation to commit energy and money to doing so.The countries with the poorest record for having women in positions of power or influence have the worst figures for girls’ education. High-profile intervention(介入) by organization s such as the World Bank has begun successfully with several countries, and more of the same will probably be needed to bring change in conservative, male-run states.Even if there were no development pay-off from gender equality in schools, the education of girls would still be a cause worth fighting for. Education is a human right, and the denial of it to girls is a scar on the community in the twenty-first century. To be born a girl in a rural area in Nepal, Pakistan, Indonesia, Morocco, Togo, or Sudan—half a dozen of the most shameful performers—means being condemned to a life without school, education, or clean water, marriage and babies coming too early, too many births, children who die of preventable diseases, backbreaking work in the fields, subordination(从属)to husband and his family, and an early death.Every year, almost 12 million children under the age of five needlessly die of infections diseases associated with poverty. But each additional year spent by their mothers in primary school lowers the risk of premature child deaths by about 8 percent. In Pakistan, an extra year of school for 1,000 girls could prevent sixty infant deaths. With women and girls being the main farmers in Africa and southern Asia, their education offers a chance to develop more efficient farming practices, improve output, and raise awareness of the ecological needs of the land with tree planting and farming. Therefore, the world community cannot afford to ignore this avenue change.12.What does the underlined word “it”in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. The poor economy at that timeB. Girls’ absence from schoolC.
