北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试1998.6.13Part I Reading Comprehension (40%)Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.Almost every family buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some people subscribe (订阅) to as many as two or three newspapers. But why do people read newspapers?Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings ——battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown (推翻) or killed ——took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the same y they happen.Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories and, of course, advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space, but it is worth the money, for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country. For those who produce newspapers, advertisements are also very important. By 3 o’clock on the Sunday morning, its glow had become so bright that Jane woke her husband to watch it. Pepys slipped on his dressing—gown and went to the window to watch it. It seemed fairly far away, o after a time he went back to bed. When he got up in the morning, it looked, as though the fire was dying down, though he could still see some flames. So he set to work to tidy his room and put his things back where he wanted them. While he was doing this, Jane came in to say that she had heard the fire was a bad one; hundred houses had been burned down in the night and he fire was still burning. Pepys went out to see for himself. He went to the Tower of London and climbed up ‘on a high part of the buildings so that he could see what was happening. From there, Pepys could see that it was, indeed, a bad fire and that even the houses on London Bridge were burning. The man of the Tower told him that the fire had started in a baker’s shop in Pudding Lane; the baker’s house had caught fire from the over —heated oven and then the flames had quickly spread to the other houses in the narrow lane. These are the nations where providing enough food for billions of people already is proving to be a headaching problem.By the year 2023,today’s “have not”nations will have a total population of 5 billion people, nearly four fifths of the world’s population.Food isn’t the only problem that such a population explosion presents. The more people there are and the worse their living conditions, the greater grow the possibility of all kinds of social problems. In 1830, world population reached 1 billion. It took only 100 more years to add another billion to world population just 30 more to add a third billion. And it took just 15 more years to reach the 4 billion mark in 1975.Actually, the world’s birth rate is falling. But so is death rate, as medical advances have made it possible for man to live longer than before. Such advances have also reduced baby death rate. This passage tells us that _________A. the United Nations thinks it possible to avoid a population explosionB. 5. 1 billion people are living in the undeveloped countriesC. in advanced nations the population growth is being controlledD. the world’s population is increasingPassage 4Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.A scientist who wants to predict the way in which consumers(消费者) will spend their money must study consumer behavior. He must obtain data both on the resources of consumers and on the motives that tend to encourage or discourage money spending. If an economist were asked which of three groups borrow most —people with rising incomes, Stable incomes, or decreasing incomes —he would probably answer, those with decreasing incomes. Actually years 1947—1950,the answer was: people with rising incomes. People with decreasing incomes were next and people with stable incomes borrowed the least. This shows us that traditional assumptions(假设) about earning and spending are not always reliable. Another traditional assumption is that if people who have money expect prices to go up they will hasten to buy. If they expect prices to go down, they will postpone buying. But research surveys have shown that this is not always true. The expectations of price increases may not stimulate buying. One typical attitude was expresser by the wife of a mechanic in an interview at a time of rising prices. “In a few months,”she said, “we’ll have pay more for meat and milk; we’ll have less to spend on other things. “Her family had been planning to buy a new car but they postponed this purchase. Furthermore, the rise in prices that has already taken place may be disliked and buyer’s resistance may be produced. This is shown by the following typical comment: “I just don’t pay these prices; they are too high.”The investigations mentioned above were carried out in America; condition most helpful to spending appears to be price stability. If prices have been stable and people consider that they are reasonable, they are likely to buy. Thus, it appears that the common business policy of maintaining stable prices is based on a correct understanding of consumer psychology(心理学).16. According to the passage, if one wants to predict the way spend their money, he should _______ .A. rely on traditional assumptions about earning and spendingB. try to encourage or discourage consumers to spend moneyC. carry out investigations on consumer behavior and get data on consumers incomes and money spending motivesD. do researches in consumer psychology in a laboratory.17. According to paragraph 2, one traditional assumption is that people with ________ incomes borrow most.A. averageB. stableC. decreasingD. rising18.According to paragraph 2, research surveys have proved that _________A. price increases always stimulate people to hasten to buy thingsB. rising prices may make people put off their purchase of certain thingsC. women are more sensitive to the rising in prices than menD. the expectations of price increases often make buyers feel angry.19. From the results of the surveys, the writer of this article _________A. concludes that the saving and spending patterns in Great Britain are better than those in AmericaB. concludes that the consumers always expect prices to remain stableC. concludes that maintaining stable prices is a correct business policyD. does not draw any conclusion20. Which of the following statements is always TRUE according to the surveys mentioned in the passage?A. Consumers will put off buying things if they expect prices to decrease.B. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:(76)Much unfriendly feeling towards computers has been based on the fear of widespread unemployment resulting from their introduction. Computers are often used as part of automated production systems requiring a least possible number of operators, causing the loss of many jobs. This has happened, for example, in many steelworks. On the other hand, computers do create jobs. They are more skilled and better paid, though fewer in number than those they replace. Many activities could not continue in their present form without computers, no matter how many people are employed. Examples are the check clearing system of major banks and the weather forecasting system. When a firm introduces computers, a few people are usually employed in key posts (such as jobs of operations managers)while other staff are re-trained as operators, programmers, and data preparation staff. (77)After the new system has settled down people in non-computer jobs are not always replaced when they leave, resulting in a decrease in the number of employees. This decrease is sometimes balanced by a substantial increase in the activity of the firm, resulting from the introduction of computers. The attitudes of workers towards computers vary. There is fear of widespread unemployment and of the takeover of many jobs by computer-trained workers, making promotion for olderworkers not skilled in computers more difficult. On the other hand, many workers regard the trend toward wider use of computers inevitable. They realize that computers bring about greater efficiency and productivity, which will improve the condition of the whole economy, and lead to the creation of more jobs. This view was supported by the former British Prime Minister, James Callaghan in 1979, when he made the point that new technologies hold the key to increased productivity, which will benefit the economy in the long run.1. The unfriendly feeling towards computers is developed from.A. the possible widespread unemployment caused by their introductionB. their use as part of automated production systemsC. the least possible number of operatorsD. the production system in steelworks2. The underlined word "They" (Line 1, Par. 2)refers to.A. computersB. jobsC. activitiesD. systems3. According to the passage, what results from the introduction of computers?A. After re-training, all employees in the firm get new jobs.B. A considerable proportion of people are employed in key posts.C. The firm keeps all of its original staff members.D. The decrease in staff members may be balanced by the increase of firm activities.5. James Callaghan's attitude towards computers can be best described as.A. doubtfulB. regretfulC. unfriendlyD. supportivePassage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:The vitamins necessary for a healthy body are normally supplied by a good mixed diet, including a variety of fruits and green vegetables. (78)It is only when people try to live on a very restricted diet that it is necessary to make special provision to supply the missing vitamins. An example of the dangers of a restricted diet may be seen in the disease known as "beri-beri". (79)It used to distress large numbers of Eastern peoples who lived mainly on rice. In the early years of this century, a scientist named Eijkman was trying to discover the cause of "beri-beri". At first he thought it was caused by a germ. He was working in a Japanese hospital, where the patients were fed on polished rice which had the outer husk removed from the grain. It was thought this would be easier for weak and sick people to digest.Eijkman thought his germ theory was confirmed when he noticed the chickens in the hospital yard, which were fed on leftovers (剩饭)from the patients' plates, were also showing signs of the disease. He then tried to isolate the germ, but his experiments were interrupted by a hospital official, who declared that the polished rice, even though left over by the patients, was too good for chickens. It should be recooked for the patients, and the chickens should be fed on cheap rice with the outer layer still on the grain.Eijkman noticed that the chickens began to recover on the new diet. He began to consider thepossibility that eating unpolished rice somehow prevented or cured "beri-beri" ——even that a lack of some element in the husk might be the cause of the disease. Indeed this was the case. The element needed to prevent "beri-beri" was shortly afterwards isolated from rice husks and is now known as vitamin B. Nowadays, this terrible disease is much less common thanks to our knowledge of vitamins.6. A good mixed diet .A. normally contains enough vitaminsB. still needs special provision of vitaminsC. is suitable for losing weightD. is composed of fruits and vegetables7. The disease "beri-beri".A. kills large numbers of Eastern peoplesB. is a vitamin deficiency (缺乏)diseaseC. is caused by diseased deerD. can be caught from diseased chickens8. The chemical substance missing from polished rice.A. was vitamin BB. did not affect the chickensC. was named the Eijkman vitaminD. has never been accurately identified4月北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试B卷真题(2)Passage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:I hear many parents complain that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away, from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems .that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are holding one another's hands for reassurance (放心)。

For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Is that 6 a.m. workout getting in the way of good sleep? Don’t think your fat cellswon't notice. A new study published in The Annals of Internal Medicine (a medicaljournal) finds that inadequate shut-eye has a harmful effect on fat calls, reducing theirability to respond to insulin (胰岛素) by about 30 percent. Over the long-term,this decreased response could set-the stage for type-2 diabetes(a medical condition in which someone has too much sugar in his or her blood), f atty liver disease and weight gain. The study adds to a growing body of evidence that there’s“an intimate relationship between the amount of sleep we get and our ability to maintain a good, healthy body weight”says sleep expert Helene Emsellem, director of the Center for Sleep and Wake Disorders in Chevy Chase,Maryland.(76) But Americans don’t seem to be gettin g the message that we need seven to nine hours per night. More than 1 in 5 of us,according to a report form the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,is getting six or fewer hours of sleep per night, onaverage. So how did researchers study fat cells in the Annals paper? Matthew Brady of the University of Chicago and a group of colleagues selected and persuaded seven volunteers to take part in the research project. They were all young, thin and healthy and agreed to sleep for eight nights in a sleep lab. “For four nights they were allowed to stay in bed for 8.5 hours a night,”says Brady. Then ,a month later, they came back for four additional nights—but this time they were allowed just 4.5 hours of sleep per night. And after each visit, researchers got a sample of their fat.(77) Brady explains that the fat cells responded significantly to the loss of sleep. “I was very surprised to be honest,”he says.Bad things can happen when fat cells become less responsive to insulin. “Fat cells are actually your friend,”he says.“They’re there to store lipids(血脂).”When lipids stay inside the cells, your body can utilize the fat when you’re exercising or sleeping or going about your day.“However, when fat cells start to become insulin resistant, the lipids start to leach out of the fat cells and rise in the bloodstream,”Brady says.1. According to the passage, lack of the sleep for a long while can probably lead to all of the following EXCEPT______. 第一段最后一句A. heart diseaseB. weight gainC. diabetesD. liver disease2. The main idea of the third paragraph is______. 第一句A. how to write a medical research paperB. how to avoid sleep lossC. how the research was conductedD. how to conduct a medical experiment3. What does the word“leach”in the last paragraph probably mean?A. LeapB. Lead.C. Lead.D. Leak. 泄露4. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?A. We will be in trouble if our fat cells become less responsive to insulin.B. More and more studies are done to study the link between sleep and weight.C. More than 20% of Americans are net getting enough sleep.D. Fat cells are there to help us maintain a good health.5. Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A. Poor Sleep May Lead to Too Much Stored Fat and DiseaseB. Sleep Experts Had Exciting Findings in a Fat StudyC. Americans Should Have More Than Six Hours of SleepD. 2000年6月北京地区成人英语三级考试全真试题及答案
2000年北京地区成⼈本科学⼠学位英语统⼀考试试题B卷 Part I Reading Comprehension Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: Advertisement can be thought of “as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services”. Advertisement aims to increase people’s awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local market. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement. There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement. We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertisement. However, if large scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less. It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them. 1. Advertisement is often used to _____.A. deceive customersB. increase productionC. arouse suspicionD. push the sale 答案:D 细节题。

On the one hand, smartphones have greatly enhanced our communication efficiency. With a smartphone, we can easily make phone calls, send text messages, and use social media to connect with people around the world. This has made long-distance communication much more convenient and instantaneous. Moreover, smartphones allow us to access information and entertainment anytime and anywhere. We can read news articles, watch movies, play games, and listen to music on our smartphones. This has made our lives more enjoyable and convenient. On the other hand, there are also disadvantages to using smartphones. First of all, smartphones can be a distraction and affect our productivity. With the constant notifications and access to social media, it’s easy to get distracted from our work or studies. Furthermore, the excessive use of smartphones can lead to physical and mental health problems. Many people develop neck and back pain, as well as eye strain, from staring at the screen for long periods of time. Additionally, excessive use of social media on smartphones can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression as people compare themselves to others. In conclusion, while smartphones have brought many benefits to modern society, it’s important to also recognize the drawbacks. We should use smartphones in moderation and be aware of the potential negative impacts they can have on our lives.(以上文档为示例,实际内容和答案需根据具体考试而定,此处为虚构内容,仅用于展示格式)。

Passage OneRows of new school desks equipped with bike pedals (踏板) are allowing students in Mexico to power through their class work while doing some light exercise, burning off calories in a country known for its alarming obesity rates. But for the students at a high school just outside the bustling city of Monterrey, the new bike desks offer benefits beyond exercise.“When we're physically active it also helps keep us focused,” said 13-year-old Reimy Rodriguez, in her first year at Public High School 24. “It's actually incredible.”A third of all Mexicans are obese and as children age, many pack on the pounds. A recent national study showed about 8% of children under 5 were overweight or obese, which rises to almost 19% for kids between 5-11 years old.Sanjuanita Garcia, the school's principal, points to the bike desks' post-pandemic benefits, especially for boys more vulnerable to excessive weight gain. The school currently features two classrooms fully decked out with the new desks, but the plan is to gradually add them to all 21 classrooms.Large amounts of excess body weight during early years poses numerous dangers to children’s health, including increased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, bone and joint problems, and asthma. Most children do not outgrow weight problems acquired in early life, and obesity in adulthood is known to contribute to strokes, heart disease, and dementia.11. What can you learn from the first 3 paragraphs?A. Besides burning off calories, the new desks help to keep students focused.B. All schools in Mexico have been equipped with new bikes.C. The best title for this passage could be “________”.A. A New Step to Lose Weight, A Bigger Achievement to Fight ObesityB. The Significance of Proper DesksC. Bike Desks Help Mexican Students Learn While Burning CaloriesD. Alarming Obesity Rates, How Will Mexicans Solve It?Passage TwoThere are many good reasons to continue to explore space. But in space exploration the “real reasons” - that are the most important - are as follows.First, most of us want to be, both as individuals and as societies, the first or the best in some activity. We want to stand out. This behavior is rooted in our genes. We are today the descendants(后代) of people who survived by outperforming others.A second reason is curiosity. Who among us has not had the desire to know what's over the next hill? What child has not been drawn to explore the unfamiliar places beyond the neighborhood? Finally, we humans have, since the earliest civilizations, built monuments(纪念碑). We want to leave something behind to show the next generation, or the generations after that, what we did with our time here. This is why cathedrals (大教堂), pyramids (金字塔) , art galleries and museums have been built.Cathedral builders would understand what I mean by real reasons. The monuments they built required a far greater percentage of their gross domestic product (国内生产总值) than we will ever put into the space business, but we look back across 600 or 800 years of time, and we are still awed (敬畏的) by what the builders accomplished. Those buildings, therefore, also stand monuments to the builders. The return the cathedral builders made on their investment could not have been summarized in a cost/benefit analysis. They gained societal advantages that were probably even more important than learning how to build walls and roofs. The people who started the cathedrals didn’t live to finish them. The society as a whole had to be dedicated to the completion of those projects.16. What kind of behavior is rooted in our genes according to the passage?A. Making money.B. Finding other lives in space.C. Looking for another suitable planet.D. Surpassing others.17. What does it illustrate that the child is drawn to explore the unfamiliar places?A. Humans are curious.B. Humans want to leave something for next generations.C. Humans want to excel.D. Humans have a constancy of purpose.18. Which of the following can NOT be regarded as a monument according to the passage?A. Art galleries.B. Museums.C. Parks.D. Pyramids.19. What's the meaning of the sentence “Those buildings, therefore, also stand monuments to the builders.”?A. It requires a great percentage of GDP.B. It can stand for hundreds of years.C. It serves as a symbol of power.D. It represents the builders’ accomplishments.20. What can be gained from building monuments or cathedrals?A. Increase in GDP.B. Gains of societal advantage.C. Economic returns.D. More investment in space exploration.Passage ThreeWith buying power rising among young, heritage-minded consumers, domestic cosmetics brands are winning hearts with guochao -a trend that is seeing younger buyers drawn to products with Chinese cultural elements. In one case, brands are embracing solar term or jieqi, a concept based onChina's ancient calendar, incorporating elements of lunar and solar calendars, which divides the year into 24 periods. This type of marketing is used to inject a sense of nature into beauty routines.Grain Rain, a Chinese skincare brand, is inspired by the sixth solar term, guyu, referring to early crops, which starts around April 20. It was accompanied by a spring-inspired marketing campaign represented by actress Zhou Dongyu in April 2022. It uses the solar term's traditional association with picking herbs to reinforce the label's herbal skincare branding.Generation Z - those born from the mid-to-late 1990s and into the 2000s and a major consumer group - is being affected by the country's cultural renaissance and the development of the internet. They are more independent in their choices and have a greater sense of national identity, experts said. With the rise of guochao, and the influence of the expansion of China's manufacturing ability, consumers are showing an increased preference for domestic cosmetics brands, according to a recent report issued by consulting firm Ernst & Young. Although China's high-end cosmetics market has been dominated for a number of years by international brands, the market influence of homegrown brands has been rapidly rising. In China's third-tier and smaller cities, the penetration rate of domestic cosmetics surpasses 90 percent, and the growth rate of lip balm and lipstick sales has been over 60 percent for two consecutive years, according to a report launched by Juhuasuan, the group-buying arm of e-commerce giant Alibaba.21. I have been examining the disconnect (脱节) between where people say they want to be and where they are. We work toward achieving those things that we want, whether it is better health and fitness, a car, a house or a great relationship. However, too many of us are settling for less than we want, since we have been taught to believe that “making a living” takes precedence over (优先于) life.I work with individuals who find themselves at a career crossroads. Many of them are mid-level, mid-career professionals. They have been working in one typeof job or career for a while, and now that job or career no longer makes them happy. They have a feeling that there must be "something else out there” for them, but they don’t know what it is.My experience is that mid-career professionals are looking for work that has meaning and value. They want to feel that what they do in the course of their work will leave some sort of imprint (印记) on the world.I know a lot of people want to think they don't have a choice. They believe they are victims (受害者) of circumstances beyond their control. They are not. No one is a victim of circumstance unless they choose to be. But you get to choose how you look at your life and your aspirations. I can't tell you what your dream job is or what your dreams might look like. I can tell you that you owe it to yourself to consider that it is possible for you.So, consider: What do you really want in your life? Is it possible to live the life of your dreams? I maintain that it is. Do you have to settle for less than you want or deserve? Do you want to make a life instead of just eking out a living (勉强度日)? You can, but only if you want to. You get to choose.26. Why are so many people settling for less than they want?A. Because hope keeps them going.B. Because there is always a disconnect between where people say they want to be and where they are.C. Because they believe “making a living” takes precedence over life.D. Because they are not struggling hard enough.27.What’s happening to those mid-level, mid-career professionals at career crossroads?A. They stop feeling happy any more.B. They feel “something else out there” for them.C. They know clearly what they are pursuingD. They need to find more challenges.28. What's missing for the mid-career professionals?A. Work that has meaning and value.B. Experience that can benefit the organization.C. Partners that will be appreciated.D. Company that makes people feel validated29. Using Fitbit sleep trackers, they found that students on 51 sleep 6.5 hours a night, but 52 outcomes accumulate when students received less than six hours of sleep a night. The results are 53 in the Feb. 13 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Sleep guidelines 54 teenagers get 8 to 10 hours of sleep every night. Many college students experience irregular and insufficient sleep.David Creswell, the William S. Dietrich II Professor in Psychology and Neuroscience at the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, led a team of researchers to 55 the relationship between sleep and GPA. College students often push themselves to achieve.“Animal studies have shown how critical sleep is for learning and memory,” said Creswell. "Here we show how this work translates 56 humans. The less nightly sleep a first-year college student gets at the beginning of the school term predicts lower GPA at the end of the term. Lack of sleep may be hurting students’ ability to learn in their college classrooms.”The study evaluated more than 600 first-year students across five studies at three universities. The students wore wrist Fitbit devices to monitor and record their sleep 57 . The researchers found that students in the study sleep on average 6.5 hours a night.More surprisingly, the researchers found that students who receive 58 six hours of sleep experienced a pronounced decline in academic performance.59 , each hour of sleep lost corresponded to a 0.07 decrease in end-of-term GPA.“Once you start dipp ing below six hours, you are starting to accumulate massive sleep debt that can impair a student’s health and study habits, compromising the whole system,” said Creswell. “Most surprising to me was that no matter 60 we did to make the effect go away, i t persisted.”51. I took up learning a foreign language well into my 30s, which has made me rediscover the joys and challenges of learning. I have studied the language for a few years now, but I have never studied using a textbook or by doing homework and exercises. I know this is the tried and tested method for the vast majority of language learners, but it is just not an appropriate way for me. I learn the language by chatting and listening, making mistakes, carrying on, making the same mistakes again, and at some point, subconsciously the mistake remedies itself somehow. This way of learning has allowed me to express myself with far more clarity, ingenuity, and personalization than any textbook could ever have.Part VI Writing (30 minutes, 15 points)Directions: You are to write in no less than 100 words on the topic “The Problems I Face on My Learning?” You could base your composition on the Chinese outline given below.你在学习中都遇到了什么样的困难?为了解决这些困难,你打算怎么办?英语试卷(答案)Part I Dialogue Communication (10 minutes, 10 points)1-5: BCDBA 6-10: CDAABPart II Reading Comprehension (35 minutes, 40 points)11-15: AABDC 16-20: DACDB21-25: BCCBD 26-30: CBACBPart III Vocabulary and Structure (10 minutes, 10 points)31-35: ADCBD36-40: BBDDA41-45: ACADA46-50: ACBBCPart IV Cloze Test (10 minutes, 10 points)51-55: ABBCB 56-60: DAACBPart IV Translation (25 minutes, 15 points)学习是我们一生都在做的事情。

2022年北京地区成人本科学士学位英语考试真题及答案
北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试5月12日Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:The most famous collections of fairy tales (童话) are the ones by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm. The Grimms published their first fairy-tale collection in 1812. They didn’t think they were writing for children. They thought they were preserving disappearing German folk culture. Their first edition (版本) was a scholarly book that carefully recorded the oral tales. They were surprised when some of their early readers suggested that the stories might be interesting to children. But the Grimms needed money. They had made a bad deal with their publisher and received little payment for their first book. At one point Wilhelm complained there wasn’t a chair in his house one could sit on without worrying it would break. So he took the hint and set to work to make a book that would be suitable for children. He selected a few of the tales, made them much longer, and polished up the language. He didn’t add morals, but he did slip in character judgments and moralizing comments wherever he could. The Grimms’ fairy tales also have one characteristic that would seem to make them unsuitable for children. Many of them include violent incidents. In “Hansel and Gretel” an old woman is burned to death in an oven, and in “Little Red Riding Hood”a child is eaten by a wolf. When he revised the tales for children, Wilhelm Grimm retained the violence. In fact, he sometimes even ramped it up. For example, in the first edition of the tales, Cinderella forgives her sisters at the end. It’s only in the second edition, the one intended for children, that her birds peck (啄) out their eyes. Why, then, have the Grimms’ fairy tales become classics of children’s literature, so much so that it is hard to imagine a child who doesn’t know Cinderella’s story or Snow White’s?One answer is that only a few of the tales survived into modem times. The first edition of the Grimms’ fairy tales had 210 tales. By 1825 it was down to 50. And today only a dozen or so of the tales are often reprinted in children’s collections.(76) But the deeper answer is that the tales that have lasted are magical adventures that help children deal with the struggles and fears of their everyday lives.1. Why did Wilhelm Grimm set out to adapt his book for children?A. To deal with readers’ complaints.B. To improve his financial situation.C. At the request of his publisher.D. To preserve the ancient stories in print.2. When revising the fairy tales, Wilhelm did all of the following EXCEPT .A. adding character judgmentsB. making the tales much longerC. deleting the violent scenesD. polishing up the language3. What does the expression “ramped it up”in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Started.B. Allowed.C. Classified.D. Increased.4. Which of the following statements about the Grimms’ fairy tales is TRUEaccording to the passage?A. They were originally intended to be children’s stories.B. Generally speaking, the tales that have endured can help children deal with thechallenges life brings to them.C. A large number of the tales made it to the modem age.D. They are less violent than the children’s stories being written today.5. What is the passage mainly concerned with?A. History of fairy tales.B. Ways to preserve the oral tradition.C. The Grimms’ fairy tales.D. Violence in fairy tales.Passage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:. As the school year kicks off, parents are once again straggling to cajole (哄编)and, if need be, drag their exhausted teens out of bed. That image may make you laugh, but lack of sleep is no joke. (77) Teenagers wh o don’t get enough rest have more learning. health~ behavior and mood problems thanstudents who get at least nine hours a night. Long-term lack of sleep is tied to heart disease, overweight, depression and a shortened life span in adults, indicating the importance of establishing good sleep habits early in life. Lack of sleep can be especially deadly for teens; car accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers, and safety experts believe sleepy driving is a major factor.Unfortunately, few teenagers get the sleep they need. In a survey of middle- and high-school students, University of Colorado researchers found that 82 percent said they woke up tired and unrefreshed, and more than half had trouble concentrating during the day at least once a week.Blame multitasking for some of this. Many students are juggling after-schoolactivities, homework and part-time jobs. Even when they manage to fulfill these obligations by a reasonable hour, television, the Internet, video games, phone calls and text messages to friends often keep them awake deep into the night. Taking soda and energy drinks late in the day and going to late-night parties on weekends add to sleep debt. Biology also works against teenagers’ sleep, The body’s internal clock, w hich controls when a person starts to feel tired, shifts after puberty (青春期), making it hard for most teens to fall asleep before 11 pm. Class usually begins before 8:15 am, with many high schools starting as early as 7:15 am. To get to school on time, most teens have to get up by 6:30 am, guaranteeing they’ll be sleep-deprived during the week. Teens often sleep much later on weekends to catch up, making it even harder to fall asleep on Sunday night and wake up Mondaymorning. Playing catch-up on weekends also doesn’t help teens stay refreshed when they need it most: during the week at school.Since the 1990s, middle and high schools in more than two dozen states have experimented with later school start times. (78) The results have been encouraging.’ more s leep, increased attendance, better grades and fewer driving accidents. But most schools still start early, meaning teens have their work cut out for them if they want to get enough sleep.6. According to the passage, poor sleep can be linked to all of the following EXCEPTA. heart diseaseB. car accidentsC. skin problemsD. poor concentration7. The main idea of Paragraph 3 isA. how sleep deprivation (缺乏) can be treatedB’ what causes sleep deprivationC. who is most at risk for sleep deprivationD. why sleep deprivation is a serious concern8. What does the word “juggling” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Dealing with at the same time.B. Striking a balance between.C. Applying for.D. Having difficulty in.9. According to the passage, what have some schools done to help their students get enough sleep?A. Educating their students about the importance of sleep.B. Monitoring their students’ late-night activities.C. Delaying school start times.D. Setting strict rules.Passage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:As any middle-class parent knows, unpaid work experience can give youngsters a valuable introduction to a secure job. The government has recognized it too, abandoning rules in that had formerly stopped 16- to 24-year-o!ds from doing unpaid work while claiming unemployment benefit. But moving from that to forcing them to work without pay in order to collect these benefits has proved a big step.(79) More than one million young people in Britain are unemployed, the highest number since the mid-1980s. Keen both to cut the welfare bill and to avoid the depressed future wages that may result from early unemployment, the government has introduced an ambitious program of reform to get youngsters off welfare and into work. A key part of it is ensuring that no one gets benefit from the government for long; ministers are keen to avoid what happened after the early- 1980s recession (~/l/), when unemployment continued in some parts of the country for a long time after the economy began to improve. To help young people into work, ministers had persuaded lots of employers, including bakery chains, bookshops, and supermarkets, to take onunemployed youths, who receive work experience but no pay, with the prospect of a proper job for those who shine. (80) Some 35,000 youngsters participated last year; half found paid work soon after finishing the scheme. The idea of getting young adults used to showing up for work is popular with voters: according to a survey published in February, about 60% of people support the program. Equally attractive was the option of compelling them to work: Under the existing arrangements youngsters could choose whether or not to accept a place, but if they dropped out after the end of the first week, they stood to lose up to two weeks’ benefits.Yet the scheme has also polarized (两极分化旳) opinion: a third of people are consistently opposed. Following a noisy “Right to Work” campaign that accused employers of co-operating secretly with the governmen t in “for ced labor”, several fi rms dropped out of the program. To prevent this from getting worse, Chris Grayling, an employment minister, admitted that young people could leave their work experience at any time without being punished for doing so. This not only halted the flight of employers (for now, at least) but also enabled him to announce that new firms have agreed to take part in the program.11. According to the passage, young people in Britain .A. are used to showing up for workB. value unpaid work very muchC. are always opposed to unpaid workD. could learn something about job security through unpaid work12. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?A. Most voters support the government’s effort to help young people to find work.B. 成人本科学士学位英语统一考试(B)
成人本科学士学位英语统一考试〔B〕Part I Reading Comprehension 〔30%〕Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Y ou should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:The fourth-graders at Chicago's McCormick Elementary School don't know Chinese is supposed to be hard to learn. For most, who speak Spanish at home, it's becoming their third language. They've been heating and using Chinese words since nursery, and it's n atural to give a “ni hao〞when strangers enter the classroom.“It's really fun!〞says Miranda Lucas, taking a break from a lesson that includes a Chinese interview with Jackie Chan. “I'm teaching my mom to speak Chinese.〞The classroom scene at McCormick is unusual, but it may soon be a common phenomenon in American schools, where Chinese is rapidly becoming the hot new language. Government officials have long wanted more focus on useful languages like Chinese, and pressure from them —— as well as from business leaders, politicians, and parents —— has produced a quick growth in the number of programs.Chicago city officials make their best effort to include Chinese in their public schools. Their program has grown to include 3,000 students in 20 schools, with more schools on a waiting list. Programs have also spread to places like Los Angeles, New Y ork City, and North Carolina. Supporters see knowledge of the Chinese language and culture as an advantagein a global economy where China is growing in importance. “This is an interes ting way to begin to engage with the world's next superpower,〞says Michael Levine, director of education at the Asia Society, which has started five new public high schools that offer Chinese. “Globalization has already changed the arrangements in terms of how children today are going to think about their ca reers, The question is when, not whether, the schools are going to adjust.〞〔76〕The number of students leaming Chinese is tiny compared with how many study Spanish or French. But one report shows that before-college enrollment 〔报名人数〕nearly quadrupled between 1992 and 2002, from 6,000 to 24,000. Despite the demand, though, developing programs isn't easy. And the No. one difficulty, everyone agrees, is having enough teachers. Finding teacher “is the challenge,〞says Scott McGinnis, an academic adviser for a language institute and a Chines e teacher for 15 years at the college level. “Materials are easy comparison. Not ail will be saved, and perhaps not all deserve to be saved. There are low-quaiity schools just as there are low-quality businesses. W e have no obligation to save them simply because .they exist. But many thriving institutions that deserve to continue are threatened. They are doing a fine job educationally, but they are caught in a financial difficulty, with no way to reduce rising costs or increase revenues 〔收入〕significantly. Raising fees doesn't bring in more revenue, for each time fees go up, the, enrollment 〔注册人数〕goes down, or the mount that must be given away in student aid goes up. 〔77〕Schools are bad businesses, whether rmblic or orivate, not usually because of bad management but because of the nature of the business. They lose money on every customer, and they can go bankrupt either from too few students or too many students. Even a very good college is a very bad business. It is such colleges, thriving but threatened, that I worry about. Low enrollment is not their chief problem. Even with full enrollments, they may go under. Efforts to save them, and preferably to keep them private, are a national necessity. 〔78〕There is no basis. for arguing that private schools are bound to be better than public schools. There are plentiful examples to the contrary. Anyone can name state universities and colleges that rank as the finest in the nation and the world. It is now inevitable that public institutions will be dominant, and therefore diversity 〔多样性〕is a national necessity. They also take shorter vacations than employees in 1979. It seems that Americans are working harder today than ever before. Or are they? A management consultant, Bill Meyer, decided to find out. For three days, he observed an investment banker hard at work. Meyer wrote down everything the banker did during his long workday. At the end of the three-day period, Meyer reviewed the banker's activities with him. What did they find out? They discovered that the man spent 80 percent of his time doing unnecessary work. For example, he attended unnecessary meetings, made redundant 〔多余的〕telephone calls, and spent time packing and unpacking his two big briefcases.〔79〕Apparently many people believe that the more time a person spends at work, the more he or she accomplishes. When employers evaluate employees, they often consider the amount of time on the job in addition to job performance. Employees know this. Although many working people can do their job effectively during a regular 40-hour work week, they feel they have to spend more time on the job after normal working hours so that the people who can promote them see them.A group of headhunters 〔猎头〕were asked their opinion about a situation. They had a choice of two candidates for an executive position with an important company. The candidates had similar qualifications for the job. For example, they were both reliable. One could do the job well in a 40-hour work week. The other would do the same job in an 80-hour work week just as well. According to a headhunting expert, the 80-hour-a-week candidate would get the job. The time this candidate spends on the job may encourage other employees to spend more time at work, too. Employers believe that if the employees stay at work later, they may actually do more work. However, the connection between time and productivity 〔生产率〕is not always positive. 〔80〕In fact. many studies indicate that after a certain point, anyone's productivity and creativity begin to decrease. Some employees are not willing to spend so much extra, unproductive time at the office. Once they finish their work satisfactorily, they want to relax and enjoy themselves. For these people, the solution is to find a company that encourages people to do both.11. What is the main idea of this passage?A. Many people work long hours but do not always do a lot of work.B. 成人本科学士学位英语统一考试(B)2009.11.21Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. They'v e been heating and using Chinese words since nursery, and it's n atural to give a “ni hao” when strangers enter the classroom.“It's really fun!” says Miranda Lucas, taking a break from a lesson that includes a Chinese interview with Jackie Chan. “I'm teaching my mom to speak Chinese.”The classroom scene at McCormick is unusual, but it may soon be a common phenomenon in American schools, where Chinese is rapidly becoming the hot new language. “This is an interes ting way to begin to engage with the world's next superpower,” says Michael L evine, director of education at the Asia Society, which has started five new public high schools that offer Chinese. “Globalization has already changed the arrangements in terms of how children today are going to think about their ca reers, The question is when, not whether, the schools are going to adjust.”(76)The number of students leaming Chinese is tiny compared with how many study Spanish or French. But one report shows that before-college enrollment (报名人数)nearly quadrupled between 1992 and 2002, from 6,000 to 24,000. Despite the demand, though, developing programs isn't easy. And the No. one difficulty, everyone agrees, is having enough teachers.
