12A father in Wuhan, nicknamed "Eagle Dad" for his controversial parenting style, has dismissed critics' claims that he pushes his 4-year-old son too hard.Police officer Wang Shaoyan came under the spotlight this month after his child took part in an 18-kilometer race in the Hubei provincial capital. Some parents attacked his methods of extreme physical training, while others reacted strongly to his admission that he regularly exposes the youngster to cold showers. "I just want my son to reach his full potential," Wang said, adding that 4-year-old son not only runs 3 km every day he also takes cold showers from time to time to strengthen his body's resistance and willpower."He has never taken any sick leave from kindergarten," he said proudly. However, some parents find his methods too extreme."I'm not sure a 4-year-old is prepared for such intense training," said Zhang Ruxia a woman who gave birth to two boys in October in Tianjin. "You can have good intentions to train your child at an early age but you also have to consider whether he can take it." Wang responded by saying children are too young to make decisions, and it is up to parents to lead them on the right path."I read many materials before and the whole process is step-by-step without pushing or imposing on my son," Wang said. The father said he was not acting rashly but following a scientific way of education. He said the doubts about his methods reflect the declining standards of modern education."Many people in Japan give their children cold showers too ,and no one is fussing about it," he said. The traditional way of education applied by most of his peers might not necessarily help bring the best out of a child he said.Wang said in addition to the physical training, he has also laid out a detailed and particular program to strengthen the intelligence of the child. "I have hired some university students to expand his knowledge in natural sciences, while playing the video for English-language teaching as well," he said.1.For what reason was Wang made known to the public?A. He forced his youngster to run 3 km every day.2.Which statement is supported by the parents who hold the opposite opinion?A. Extreme physical training can explore children's full potentials.B. Taking cold showers regularly is beneficial for children's development.C. It's up to parents to lead children on the right path.D. The way to educate children should agree with their age.3.What does the phrase "fussing about” probably mean in the 8th paragraph?A. Minding about.B. Paying attention to.C. Laughing at.D. Talking about.4.In Eagle Dad’s opinion, his extreme pa renting was questioned because____.A. he didn’t take it step by step in a scientific wayB. the highly tense work-out was misunderstoodC. modern education is not challenging enoughD. some parents were jealous of his success A device that stops drivers from falling asleep at the wheel is about to undergo testing at Department of Transport laboratories and could go on sale within 12 months. The system, called Driver Alert, aims to reduce deadly road accidents by 20% - 40% that are caused by tiredness. Airline pilots can also use it to reduce the 30% of all pilot-error accidents that are related to fatigue.Driver Alert is based on a computerized wristband. The device, worn by drivers or pilots, gives out a sound about every four minutes during a car journey. After each sound the driver must respond by squeezing the steering wheel.A sensor in the wristband detects this pressing action and measures the time between the sound the driver’s response.Tiredness is directly related to a driver’s response time. Usually, a watchful driver would take about 400 milliseconds to respond, but once that falls to more than 500 milliseconds, it suggests that the driver is getting sleepy. In such cases the device gives out more regular and louder sounds, showing that the driver should open a window or stop for a rest. If the driver’s response continues to slow down, the sounds become more frequent until a nonstop alarm warns that the driver must stop as soon as possible. The device has been delivered to the department’s l aboratories for testing. If these tests, scheduled for six months’ time, are successful, the makers will bring the product to market within about a year.5.According to the text, Driver Alert ______.A. aims to reduce tiredness-related accidentsB. has gone through testing at laboratoriesC. aims to prevent drivers from sleepingD. has been on sale for 12 months6.How should a driver respond to the sounds from Driver Alert?A. By sounding a warning.B. By touching the wristband.C. By checking the driving time.D. If so, you likely have a case of test anxiety. But, don't be afraid. By recognizing the problem, you are taking the first step towards overcoming it.Believe it or not, a touch of nervousness can sharpen your mind, allowing you to perform more quickly. This is because under stress, the body releases (释放) the hormone adrenaline (肾上腺素), which prepares it for something important that will happen. However, too much anxiety can result in sleeplessness, loss of appetite(胃口)before tests, and poor performance. Some people might feel hot and tired. With great anger they often shout or complain for no reason. If you worry a lot or are a perfectionist, you are more likely to have trouble with test anxiety. Those who have prepared poorly for a test or have had negative experiences taking tests may also experience test anxiety. When you feel a storm of anxiety coming on, stop what you're doing and make your mind a blank. Ifpossible, actually tell yourself to 'STOP!' This will get your mind off the stress. Then think of being at a place of comfort and let your body relax. As you continue the test, find questions you know the answers to and answer them first. This will help restore your confidence. Important of all, talk to yourself using positive language. Make it a habit to replace each negative thought with a logical reason. For example: "I've studied hard and I know the material, so I'm ready to do the best I can."Another thing you can do is to learn to accept mistakes. In fact, they can be valuable learning opportunities.Last but not least, start test preparation early - three to five days ahead of the quiz or test. After all, good study habits and skills - for example, time management and note-taking - will give you the feeling that you are in control.9. The best title of the passage is probably______A. How to beat test anxiety.B. What is test anxiety.C. The effects of test anxiety.D. Experience test anxiety will help you.10.Those ______ more easily suffer from test anxiety.A. who are not well prepared for a test.B. who wants everything to be perfect and highest.C. who have experiences of failure in exams.D. who do poorly in their study.11.The author mentions _____pieces of suggestions about how to get over test anxiety.A.3B.4C.5D.612.What can we infer from the passage?A. Mistakes sometime can be valuable and helpful.B. Those who have prepared poorly for a test cause test anxiety easily.C. Full test preparations will give you the feeling that you are in control.D. A touch of anxiety can have a positive effect.13.The underlined word “hot” in Paragraph3 means .A.disappointed B.angry C.active D.running a high body temperatureAutumn means different things to different people. It all depends on your personality, said British naturalist Richard Mabey. "Personality shapes your view of the season," he said. "You may see it as a fading away, a packing up(结束), or as a time of packing in another sense –the excited gathering of resources before a long journey."If this is true, perhaps it tells us a little about, for instance, Thomas Hood, the 19th Century English poet. About November, he wrote:No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful easeNo shade, no shine, no butterflies, no beesNovember! On the other hand, another English poet John Keats, already sensing he was seriously ill, was inspired by a late September day to pen one of the most famous poems in the English language, To Autumn. He wrote to a friend afterwards that there was something comforting and healing about it.According to Richard Mabey, Keats has the biological evidence on his side. Autumn is not a time of slowing down, but a time of new beginnings and great movements of creatures. For example, just at the moment that Keats's "gathering swallows" (in To Autumn)are departing for Africa, millions of creatures are fleeing from the frozen north like Iceland, Greenland and Russia to winter along the east and south coasts of Britain. According to scientists, before falling, the leaves transfer their chlorophyll(叶绿素)and carbohydrates into the woody parts of the tree forsafe-keeping over winter. What remains are the natural antioxidants(防老剂)in the leaves: the yellow and orange carotenoids(类胡萝卜素), and another protective chemical specially produced for autumn, the bright-red anthocyanin(花青素). High color is not a signal of deterioration(退化)and decline, but of detox(排毒的)ability and good health.A century after Keats, the American poet Loren Eiseley wrote in his journal: "Suppose we saw ourselves burning like maples in a golden autumn. [And that we could] disintegrate(瓦解)like autumn leaves…dropping their substance like chlorophyll. Would not our attitude towards death be different?"14.From Thomas Hood’s poem, we may infer that _______.A.he suffered a lot from cold NovemberB.he missed the shining summer days very muchC.he had a negative attitude towards autumnD.he enjoyed butterflies and bees very much15.Which word c an best describe Loren Eiseley’s attitude towards autumn?A.Optimistic. B.Fearful. C.Doubtful. D.Realistic.16.In autumn, leaves turn yellow before falling because ______.A.they can’t bear the freezingB.they can’t get enough water from the wood partC.chlorophyll and carbohydrates have been lost through leavesD.chlorophyll and carbohydrates have come back to the wood part17.What does the underlined sentence mean?A.Man can never live long, just as leaves must leave the tree annually.B.Man is different from autumn leaves, which will come again the next spring.C.Man should treat death calmly, just like autumn leaves fall to the ground.D.Man should have a positive attitude towards death, quite different from autumn leaves.Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog's life, describes a person who has an unhappy life. Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things. Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways. People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. But mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.Dog expressions also are used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. Arainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs. 18.A person who lives an unhappy life can be described as “_______”.A. becoming sick as a dogB. leading a dog’s lifeC. living in a dog-eat-dog worldD. Working like a dog19.The underlined word “mean” in Paragraph 4 most probably means “_______”.A. violentB. selfishC. wildD. Poor20.What can we learn from the text?A. Everyone can be successful if he learns from the old.B. It might be difficult for the young to learn new skills.C. Junkyard dogs are careful in money arrangement.D. Fierce persons aren’t so awful as their appearance sometimes.21.To support his idea, the author develops the text mainly by _______.A. listing reasonsB. using idiomsC. giving examplesD. Making comparisonsWhat is it that makes people laugh? More than two thousand years ago the ancient Greek philosopher (哲学家) Aristotle defined (定义) jokes as the pleasure that results from a feeling of triumph by showing we’re better than someone else in a certain way. According to Aristotle and many other philosophers, all jokes depend mainly on showing inferiority in another person or group of persons — that is,putting it clearly,on showing that they are worse off than ourselves. Jokes raise our good opinion of ourselves at someone else’s expense.Showing how much better than other people we are is only one reason we like jokes. Someone may also use a joke to express their anger or their cruelty (残酷)or any other kind of action that is not acceptable to us. We feel free to laugh when we hear about someone sliding on a banana skin. The joke lets us express those attitudes which are usually unacceptable to society. This is probably the reason why some of the jokes, especially those involving cruelty, are so popular with certain people.Besides, all jokes depend on our enjoyment of laughing at something that is strange and out of place because it’s different from things which are happening around it. The same situation can be either sad or pleasant, depending entirely on how strange and out of place it is. If a girl in a bathing suit falls into a swimming pool,we don’t laugh because nothing unusual has happened. But if a man in a smart suit falls in,the situation is at once unusual in a pleasant way and we laugh.A good joke-teller will always try to build up a situation in which one thing is expected until something unexpected suddenly happens, and so we laugh.22.The underlined word “inferiority” (in Paragraph 1) means ______.A.someone that is better than someone elseB.something that is better than something elseC.someone that is as good as someone elseD.something that is not as good as something else23.According to Aristotle, all jokes depend mainly on ______.A.resulting in a sense of successB.showing inferiority in another person or groupC.having a good opinion of other peopleD.making people laugh unexpectedly 24.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?A.To express those attitudes usually unacceptable to society is one of the reasons we like jokes. B.When people are angry, they would like to hear jokes.C.People who like jokes are usually cruel.D.Showing we are better than other people is the only one reason we like jokes.25.What will a good joke-teller always try to do?A.Make an unexpected thing happen in an expected situationB.Make different things happen at the same time.C.Make a sad situation into a pleasant one.D.Make people laugh at something unusual and out of place.参考答案1.B2.D3.D4.C【解析】试题分析:本文介绍了武汉一位“鹰爸”对自己4岁的极端体能训练引来的社会争议。

Wilderness
“In wilderness(荒野) is the preservation of the world.” This is a famous saying from a writer regarded as one of the fathers of environmentalism. The frequency with which it is borrowed mirrors a heated debate on environmental protection: whether to place wilderness at the heart of what is to be preserved.
I look forwards to seeing these views taken further, and to their being challenged by the other participants. One challenge that suggests itself to me is that both cases need to take on the question of spiritual value a little more directly. And there is a practical question as to whether wildernesses can be exploited without harm.
As John Sauven of Greenpeace UK points out, there is a strong appeal in images of the wild, the untouched; more than anything else, they speak of the nature that many people value most dearly. The urge to leave the subject of such images untouched is strong, and the danger exploitation(开发) brings to such landscapes(景观) is real. Some of these wildernesses also perform functions that humans need—the rainforests, for example, store carbon in vast quantities. To Mr. Sauven, these ”ecosystem services” far outweigh the gains from exploitation.

(2021·苏锡常镇四市二调,C)Global Positioning Systems are now a part of everyday driving in many countries. These satellitebased systems provide turnbyturn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But they can also cause a lot of problems, sending you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two.Barry Brown is with the Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm, Sweden. The center studies humancomputer interaction, or HCI, especially communications involving wireless devices. We spoke to Mr Brown by Skype. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPSequipped car to use during his stay.Barry Brown:“And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination.” And, then it wasn't until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they had put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the_GPS_is_kind_of_“garbage_in_garbage_out”.Mr Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment.Barry Brown:“One problem with many GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that itis not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it's going to the wrong place.”Barry Brown formerly served as a professor with the University of California, San Diego. While there, he worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. Thetwo men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in people's cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called “The No rmal, Natural Troubles of Drivingwith GPS.”Barry Brown: “One of the things that struck us, perhaps the most important thing was that you have to know what you're doing when you use a GPS. There are these new skills that people have developed. There are these new competencies that you need to have to be able to use a GPS because they sometimes go wrong.”Barry Brown says this goes against a common belief that GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational (导航) skills.“The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS” lists several areas where GPS systems can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing issues related to when GPS commands are given.Barry Brown says to make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.

How does the passage mainly develop?A. By providing examples.(举例子)B. By making comparisons.(作比较)C. By following the order of time. By following the order of importance. (按重要性顺序)〔典例剖析〕A (湖北卷)Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy .After all ,you probably sing or whistle when you are happy. Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy .However ,they sing most of the time for a very different reason .Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.Do you know what a “territory” is ?A territory is an area that an animal ,usually the male, claims as its own .Only he and his family are welcome there .No other families of the same species are welcome .Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome . If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you ,you might shout .Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.If so ,you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him .A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time ,especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time ,whether he can see an outsider or not .This screaming is what we call a bird’s song ,and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs. You can see that birds have a language all their own .Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.59.How does the writer explain birds’ singing?A.By comparing birds with human beings.B.By reporting experiment results.C.By describing birds’ daily life.D.By telling a bird’s story. Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy. Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.

AThe term “helicopter parents”refers to “a style of parents who are over focused on their children”.Helicopter parents are always making a big push to provide children with every opportunity to succeed, from baby steps at age 1,homework at age 8,college application at age 18,employment issues at age 25 to family problems at age 30,40 or even older. They constantly shadow the child, always directing his behavior, allowing him zero alone time.Helicopter parenting can develop for a number of reasons.Worries about the economy, the job market, and the world in general can push parents toward taking more control over their child’s life in an attempt to protect them.Adults who felt unloved or ignored as children can overcompensate their own children. When parents see other overinvolved parents,it can cause a similar response. They feel that if they don’t involve themselves in their children’s lives, they are bad parents. The main problem with helicopter parenting is that it can backfire. To give an example, the house where Mary lived with roommates was broken into and things were stolen.Mary called the landlord(房东) to install an alarm system, but before she could finish the negotiations(协商),her mother rushed in and demanded action.“I felt like my mother ruined my communication with our landlord. We could have gotten it done ourselves. She was well intended but only made me feel annoyed and defeated,”says Mary.Obviously, overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things but it does the exact opposite. In the long run parents are actually damaging their child’s basic skills to deal with matters independently. It makes the child feel lacking in confidence, less competent in dealing with the stresses of life on their own. They’re winning the battle, but actually losing the war.

根据最后一段第一句“Obviously, overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things...”
2.What can we learn from the passage?A.Children who have helicopter parents live a hard life.B.Helicopter parenting only happens to very young children.C.Helicopter parents can protect their children against all problems.D.Helicopter parents do their children great harm in the long run.
3.What will possibly be discussed in the paragraph that follows?A.The bad effects of helicopter parenting.B.How we can avoid being helicopter parents.C.Different opinions about helicopter parenting.D.The reasons for the development of helicopter parents.

BThe U.S.Postal Service(USPS) is losing billions of dollars a year. The government company that delivers “small mail”is losing out to email and other types of electronic communication.First-class mail amount fell from a high point of 104 million pieces in 2000 to just 64 million pieces by 2014.Congress permits the 600,000-employee USPS to hold a monopoly(垄断) over first-class and standard mail. The company pays no federal, state or local taxes;pays no vehicle fees;and is free from many regulations on other businesses.Despite these advantages, the USPS has lost 52 billion since 2007,and will continue losing money without major reforms. The problem is that Congress is preventing the USPS from reducing costs as its sales decline, and is blocking efforts to end Saturday service and close unneeded post office PS also has a costly union-dominated workforce that slows the introduction of new ideas or methods PS workers earn significantly higher payment than comparable private-sector workers. The answer is to privatize the USPS and open postal markets to competition. With the rise of the Internet, the argument that mail is a natural monopoly that needs government protection is weaker than ever.Other countries facing declining letter amounts have made reforms.Germany and the Netherlands privatized their national postal companies over a decade ago,and other European countries have followed suit.Britain floated shares of the Royal Mail on its stock exchange in 2013.Some countries, such as Sweden and New Zealand, have not privatized their national postal companies, but they have opened them up to competition. These reforms have driven efficiency improvements in all of these countries.Additional number of workers have been reduced, productivity has risen and consumers have benefited. Also, note that cost-cutting measures—such as closing tone post offices—are good for both the economy and the environment.Privatization and competition also encourage new changes. When the USPS monopoly over “extremely urgent”mail was stopped in 1979,we saw an explosion in efficient overnight private delivery by firms such as FedEx.The government needs to wake up to changing technology, study postal reforms abroad and let businessmen reinvent our out-of-date postal system.
