Some people think that traditional culture can be destroyed by using it as money-making attractions to tourists. However, others believe that it is the only way to save traditions. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Tourism is developing at an ever-increasing rate along with the heated discussion of the impact it brings about on traditional culture. It is argued that commercial tourism damages the local customs, while others reckon that tourism development provides the protection to traditions.

On the one hand, those who perceive the former view argue that cultural traditions used for tourism purposes may devastate original features and cultural identity. Culture assimilation brought by foreign tourists might be the primary reason. To cater the visitors’ expectation and gain more profits, local operators tend to make changes, for example, branches of McDonald, Starbucks and Costa could be seen in many historical sites of China. The attractions could easily lose the peculiarity but look like the same.

On the other hand, the opponents who support the latter view have their sound reasons. First, entertainment facilities and traveller-directed services turn regions

into tourist destinations and help inhabitants earn money, which can be employed to protect and renovate the old architecture. Second, intangible cultural heritage can be popularized to a wider range of people by commercializing traditional values. Yu Opera is a typical example of it, which is becoming well known to people outside Henan province of China due to the promotion to travellers and generating revenue by selling related souvenirs.

As for me, cultural assimilation is inevitable, but profit-oriented tourism seems not the only way to inherit and preserve indigenous culture. In addition to developing tourism, various approaches such as offering priority to local film industry, popularizing historical and cultural education in schools, and organizing regular cultural activities in local communities can also be extreme supportive. Apart from that, some solutions to lessen drawbacks generated should also be taken to maintain cultural values.
