Andrew Bennett talked for the first time about the night his wife was killed.
The judge thought it was he who killed his wife. Now he wrote to a magazine
from the prison about what happened on the night of November 23, 1995.
“I had to stay late at the hospital that night to do an operation. I left at about
11 pm. I drove home slowly because the weather was terrible. The wind was
blowing and it was raining heavily, I was turning into our road when a man suddenly ran in front of my car, I almost hit him but I stopped just in time. I was frightened and the men looked frightened, too. I got out of the car but he ran away before I could ask if he was all right. It was very strange. When I got home, the lights were on but it was very quiet, I called to my wife but there was no answer. Then I remembered that she was out at a concert.
“I was still very upset about what happened on the road. So I went to have a bath. Then I saw that the window in the bathroom was open. This was strange because my wife always locked the doors and windows before she went out. She was afraid of burglars. When I went to close it, I found Ellen lying there, blood everywhere, I rushed over and felt for her pulse but she was dead. I sat on the floor beside her body and was too frightened to do anything.
“The next thing I knew was the sky was getting bright, I can’t remember a thing about that night. In the morning I phoned the police. They arrived half an hour after I phoned them. But it seemed like a few hours. During that time I tried hard to remember anything I could about the night before, I couldn’t stop thinking about the man in the road. What was he doing on that night in our quiet neighborhood? Why did he look so frightened? Why did he run away?”

Stephen Glenn is a famous American scientist who has made several very important medical breakthroughs (突破). Many people were dying to know the secrets to his fantastic achievements. To solve the mystery, a reporter interviewed him asking why he was able to be so much more creative than the average person.
Stephen Glenn said that it all came from an experience with his mother that occurred when he was about four years old. He tried to remove a bottle of milk from the refrigerator and it fell, spilling its contents all over the kitchen floor - a real sea of milk!
Instead of shouting at him, giving him a lecture or punishing him, his mother said. “Steve, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, “You know, Steve, whenever you make a mess like this,
eventually you have to clean it up and restore all the things to proper order. So, we should clean it up.” He used sponge (海绵) and together they cleaned up the spilled milk.
His mother then said, “You have a failed experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hand. Let’s go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it.” The little boy learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!
This famous scientist said that it was at that moment that he knew____________________________.Instead, he learned that mistakes were just opportunities for learning something new, which is, after all, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment doesn’t work, we usually learn something valuable from it.

On Friday, 7 June, an Italian Airline flight was ready to leave Rome for Tokyo in Japan. All the passengers were on the plane. The departure time was 21:00. The seatbelts were turned on, so passengers were not allowed to stand up and had to stay in their seats. Then something unusual happened.
A woman decided that she had to go to the toilet. So she got up and walked to the back of the plane. The toilet door was clearly marked TOILET, but the woman opened a door next to the toilet. This door was the emergency exit and, when she opened it, the evacuation slide(逃生滑梯) opened. Because of this, the plane was not able to take off.
All the passengers had to leave the plane. When the evacuation slide has opened, there are two possibilities. Workers can change the slide at the airport, but the light will be delayed for a long time. Or the plane can take off without an evacuation slide and replace it when it has landed, but the number of passengers on the plane must be smaller for safety reasons.
Thirty-eight passengers had to stay at a hotel at the airport and take another flight the next day. The other passengers got back on the plane, and it finally took off at 05:10 on Saturday morning. It arrived in Tokyo at 14:10. Some passengers found that their luggage was still in Italy. But perhaps they were lucky…

It was a cool spring morning back in 2009 and I had just started a morning shift as a school crossing guard. Looking out for the children, I suddenly noticed something at sideways. Behind me I first thought it was a small, overweight dog heading towards me. I didn't think much about it, and looked carefully at any approaching children,
as well as enjoying the morning sun.
What is wrong with that dog? I thought later on, as I looked back to check on the small dog—it was moving much too fast for itself.
A few minutes later, I felt as if I was being watched, I looked behind me, but the dog had disappeared. Then, as I slowly turned my attention back to the road, I was greatly surprised to see a large koala at my feet and staring right
up at me.
A number of different solutions crossed my mind. But staying calm was the best. “Are you waiting to cross the road?” I asked the sweet koala. Miss Koala looked away, and scratched (抓挠) behind her car.
Then it got up on all four feet and impatiently started to cross the road. I quickly checked for any cars, then walked to the road with my stop sign held high, whistle (吹哨) to my lips, and held my breath.
The koala made it to the other side of the street, then continued following the path through the trees and disappeared into bushes.
So why did the koala cross at the school crossing? To safely get to the trees on the other side!

Ned and Miles are students at different colleges. Ned applies for an online school, while Miles. attends classes on a school campus. The two students each believe that their school system is better than the other.
Ned: Hey, Miles. Are you free to see a movie tomorrow night?
Miles: Sorry, no. I'll have a class tomorrow and a lot of homework to finish up.
Ned:Oh, that's too bad. I'm so glad I take classes online. I can decide when, where and how to complete my lessons. It saves a lot of time.
Miles: It sounds good, but I actually really enjoy going to class because it's a great way to get to know other people. It also helps me learn how to work well with others. If I don't understand something, I'm always
able to ask about it in person. That saves me a lot of time and prevents misunderstanding.
Ned: In an online class, I have to think thoroughly(彻底地)before asking questions. That teaches me how to solve problems on my own.
Miles: Do you ever run into technical(技术上的)problems in your online classes? If you can't open a file, how can you continue your learning?
Ned: It's not a big problem. I can email the teacher or contact another student for help.
Miles: But answering questions through emails takes too much time. You may fall behind on your studies.
Ned: You can fall behind, too. What if you get sick or your class gets canceled because the weather is bad?
Those aren't problems for online classes.
Miles: Yes, but there's usually a make-up(弥补)class if a class is canceled.
Ned:In an online class, I don't have to worry about missing classes for any reason. I can always review the previous(之前的)lessons online.
Miles: Don't you feel lonely sometimes? I would feel lonely if I had to learn on my own.
Ned: I'm confident in learning by myself. Besides, an online class gives me more free time to take part in other activities.
Miles: I still prefer having classmates to brainstorm and discuss ideas with. I believe that improves my learning all the time.
Ned: I'm pretty self-disciplined(自律的), and I work better on my own. I can't focus when working with others.
Miles: I guess everybody learns differently.

Dear Judy
Sister, how are you?
I woke up this morning. It's nearly Easter. Whenever it is Easter. I think of you. I'll never forget seeing you for the first time when you were born. You were the sweetest little baby wrapped in a soft white blanket. How I loved kissing and holding you! I was a teenager and loved carrying you around. Sometimes people asked if you were my baby. I must have looked like a very young mother, but how proud I was in those moments.
However, things started to change for me as I never felt quite wanted. How sad when it was that I felt so jealous(嫉妒的) of you.
Before your arrival. Mum was in no hurry to buy the things that I needed. But later I always had to wait and wait for her to pay my school fees or buy books and clothes. Everything was always late! How much more upsetting that my birthday and Christmas presents were only ever things that I urgently(急迫地)needed, such nightdress and books?
Your situation was different and Mum always made sure that you had the best of everything quickly. when you
got a horse for your 6th birthday and started riding lessons, how jealous I was!
I slowly turned cold towards you and never gave you the warm hugs that you expected from me or showed an interest in your horse or your medals. I remember your sad face, probably wondering why I didn’t seem to care about you.
Today I considered that as I woke up. I have never spoken about this, or why that is so. Today I must say that I am very sorry for hurting your feelings. It was never your fault(错). You were too young to even realize it.All these years, you might have wondered what you did wrong that I didn't often speak with you.
Please forgive me! I want to be a real big sister to you again. If you can forgive me, we can start over and spend time together. You have turned into a beautiful young woman who I am so proud of. I would love to be close again.
Much love
Helen

Half a year before graduation from college, my son began to seek a job. Due to the financial crisis (危机), fewer companies would like to employ new staff. My son targeted a company that was going to hire only one person while there were more than twenty people filling their resumes (简历).
After the interview, there would only be 3 who could enter the final round, which would later decide one person to be employed. Everything seemed to go quite well and my son passed the first round and entered the final round in a week.
On the day of the final interview, my son and other two candidates arrived at the interview place on time, waiting for the test. Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably simple. The interviewer only said to them, all of you are very super. Please go home and wait for our notice. We will tell you the result in 3 days. Good luck to all of you!" On the morning of the third day, my son received a text from the company shortly after breakfast that he was not employed. We all felt very disappointed.
In nightfall that day, my son suddenly told me excitedly on the phone, "Dad, I have been employed!” Greatly surprised, I could not wait to ask him, "What's the whole matter?" My son told me that he received another text saying that he was employed. Actually, the first text sent to my son was also part of the test in the interview. Three men received the same text this morning and only my son's reply was "Thank you." while the others said “Goodbye”.
Only then did I know that my son's “hope” came in that way. That is, when you feel disappointed, do not forget to say "Thank you." to the one who disappoints you. Saying Thank you." shows respect for others work and shows you are generous. Therefore, while under the same condition, you will get the upper hand in terms of opportunities compared with others!

Can you remember a time when somebody was kind to you? Perhaps a person let you go in front of them in a queue. Maybe your sister phoned you to ask how your week was going. Or perhaps a stranger or a friend gave you a hand in a much deeper way. There are a thousand ways to offer kindness. And at a time when the world seems to have so many problems, some people have started to take the issue of kindness very seriously indeed!
Being kind is a win-win situation. It brings happiness to the receiver as well as the person who does the action. As a simple example, let's imagine you have a workmate who always does a very good job. How about taking moment to mention this to him? Your workmate will be happy to receive some praise, and you will probably feel good about yourself for having spread little joy.
Many organizations try to encourage people to do kind acts, wherever and whenever they can. The idea behind this is that it doesn't take any major plan to be kind. Perhaps the strongest supporters of this idea are the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Kindness Foundation, who work with schools and companies to teach people kindness is beautiful skills. They operate under the beliefs that kindness can be taught and that it is contagious(有感染力的). Their activities range from suggesting kind acts to allowing their website-users to become "RAKtivists"(people who officially register themselves as activists of kindness).
Apart from using your own common sense, the RAK website suggests some more imaginative ways to show kindness. Generally, these fall into three types. The first is interpersonal kindness. Some examples are donating(捐赠) old clothes to charity or writing an advantageous online idea about restaurant that you like. The second is environmental kindness, which could mean simply recycling or organizing a group event to tidy up a local park or beach. The third type is less clear: personal kindness, which means treating yourself kindly such as taking a walk in parks, inviting yourself to a big meal or setting yourself a goal to complain less. By being kind to yourself, ___93__ ______.

A few days ago, I ran into a stranger as he passed by. I said sorry to him and he said, "Excuse me, too, I wasn't even watching for you. ” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went on our way after saying goodbye.
Later in the kitchen at home, as I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me, very quietly. When I turned around, I nearly knocked her down. "Get out of the way!" I shouted angrily. She ran away, crying.
That night, when I lay in bed, my husband said to me, "You were so rude to Betty. Go and look around on the kitchen floor, and you'll find some flowers there. Betty brought those for you.
She picked them herself-pink, yellow, and your favourite blue.”
When l heard this, I thought deeply: While meeting with a stranger, I was calm and polite; but with my daughter, I was not patient. I felt sad and tears began to fall.
I quietly went to Betty's bed, "Wake up, my dear,” I said, "Are these flowers you picked for me?” She smiled, "I found them by the tree. I knew you'd like them, especially the blue." I said, “I am so sorry that I treated(对待)you that way today.” And she whispered(悄声说),“Mommy, that's okay-I still love you anyway." I kissed her and said,
"I love you too and I do love the flowers.”

George Reeder, 63 , in Somerset has been given a bravery certificate(证书)for saving the life of a baby boy.
It was a cold and windy morning. The local harbour master, George Reeder, was carrying out his regular duties when he heard a noise that caught his attention. On the other side of the harbour, some people were pointing and shouting, so he cycled over quickly.
Mr Reeder expected to see a dog in the sea, but instead, he saw a baby’s buggy(婴儿车)in about four metres of freezing cold water. A woman was screaming desperately—her baby boy was strapped into the buggy and was in the water. The strong wind had blown the buggy into the sea. Mr Reeder quickly decided to do something.
‘I went over and saw that the buggy was upside-down…and I jumped in,’ said Mr Reeder. He pulled the buggy over to the sea wall. Then some other people came to help. They tied a rope to the buggy and managed to pull it out of the water and to safety.
Tanya Allen, a passer-by(who, fortunately, was a nurse), gave the baby CPR(心肺复苏术)and was able to get him to breathe again. Mr Reeder remembered seeing a little bit of breath coming out of the baby’s mouth. ‘I thought, he is all right. He’s alive. Brilliant!’ he said. Then an air ambulance helicopter arrived and the baby was taken to hospital. Mr
Reeder said it was unbelievable that the baby survived. ‘It’s such a miracle,’ Mr Reeder added.
After he’d finished helping the baby and the helicopter had gone, Mr Reeder went home to recover from the experience. The child’s grandfather knew Mr Reeder and, a little later, went to his house to tell him that the boy was out of danger. Mr Reeder was very relieved and happy to hear that.
Mr Reeder said that he hadn’ t really been brave. ‘It was everyone—from Tanya doing the CPR to the helicopter pilot, ’ he said. ‘I’m just glad I could help’. But when Mr Reeder got the certificate, a reporter said that what he’d done was very brave. ‘This was an extremely brave act, as he put his own life at risk.’ The reporter has advised local people to avoid walking along the seafront in very windy weather.

Say the words ‘reality TV’ and the show that comes into most people’s mind is Big Brother. Love it or hate it, there have been versions (版本)in more than seventy countries! The basic format is simple: put a group of strangers into a house, record everything they do and watch how they manage to live together.
Actually the idea wasn’t original. A similar show, The Real World, was broadcast in 1992 on MTV. But the format really became popular with the success of Big Brother, and it has been copied again and again, including celebrity versions. In similar shows, constants(参选手) have been sent to the jungle or a desert island. In Wife Swap a mother goes to live with a family of strangers and tries to manage their homes; in Young. Dumb an Living of Mum a group of spoil (宠坏的) teenagers with no life skills learn to live together and look after themselves.。
