Warming up& Listening
Wuhan No.19 Senior School Yu Jie ⅠBRIEF ANALYSIS OF THE TEACHING MATERIAL
The theme of Unit 9--- Saving the Earth is nature, ecology and our environment.The focus of this period is the problems facing the earth and the solutions to the problems. In this period, students can learn about how serious problems the earth is faced with. The pictures in the Warming up provide students with opportunities to talk about nature ecology and to express causes and solutions.
The listening material is a speech, which calls on us to stop polluting water, take better care of water and learn to save water. After the study of this period, students will improve their speaking and listening abilities and be aware of the heavy responsibility they should assume.
ⅡTEACHING AIMS
1.Knowledge aims: Encourage the Ss to activate the relevant vocabulary----ecology,
pollution, rubbish/trash/garbage, deforestation, desertification, starvation, take action.
2.Ability aims:
a.Develop the Ss’abil ities of listening, speaking, and writing.
b.Help the Ss to make better use of sentence structures to talk about causes, effects
and solutions.
3.Emotion aims
a.Enhance the Ss’ awareness of the significance and need to protect the
environment and save the earth.
b.Help the Ss to think of measures we can take to put an end to the passive situation
we are in.
ⅢIMPORTANT POINTS AND DIFFICULT POINTS
1.Teaching important points:
a.Develop the Ss’listening and speaking abilities.
b.Guide the Ss to talk about causes, effects and solutions.
2.Teaching difficult points:
a.How to improve the Ss′listening and speaking abilities.
b.How to rearrange and simplify the listening activity.
ⅣTEACHING APPROACHES
1.The Ss-centered Approach is adopted while the teacher is the guide and the organizer.
2.The Task-based Approach is adopted to design some tasks in each step of the lesson,
from simple to complex and related to each other.
3.Audio-lingualApproach is used to arouse the Ss’interest in English learning.
ⅤTEACHING AIDS: Multi-media computer, a tape recorder
Ⅵ TEACHING PROCEDURES:
Step 1Lead-in
1. Show pictures of the earth with different expressions to the class.
2. Play a video that is mainly about pollution.
▲Aims: Help Ss to think deeply about how human beings’ behavior influences ecological balance.
▲Effect evaluation: The sharp contrast leads Ss to think about the causes of such a change and presents the focus of the lesson.
Step 2 Presentation
1.Show pictures of serious problems facing the earth to the class.
2.Ask Ss to describe the pictures.
▲Aims: Lead Ss to realize how serous the situation is with the help of the pictures.
▲Effect evaluation: The pictures can let Ss know how serious problems the earth is faced with and arouse their desire for seeking the causes of the problems.
Step 3 Discussion
1. Discuss in groups: What causes the problem? What can we do to solve the problem?
2. Report
▲Aims:1. Develop Ss’speaking ability.
2. Help Ss to practise talking about causes, effects and solutions.
▲Effect evaluation: Through this activity, not only will the students be aware of the significance and need to save the earth, but also they will think carefully about taking measures to solve the problems.And moral education is embodied.
Step 4 Listening
1. Pre-listening
Qs: Which problem is the most serious one? Why do you think so?
▲Aims: Help Ss to air their own points of view on certain issues.
▲Effect evaluation: The two questions play the role of transition from Warming up to Listening.
2. While-listening
a. Play the tape of Part 1 and then do some exercises.
b. Prediction: From what aspectswill the speaker talk about water problem next?
Ask Ss to predict, listen and check.
