A Thing of Beauty
-- the Poetry of John Keats
Brief Introduction of Keats’ Poems
• Keats’ poetry, characterized by exact and closely-knit construction, emotional descriptions, and by force of imagination, gives transcendental values to the physical beauty of the world. • His artistic aim is to create a beautiful world of imagination as opposed to the miserable reality of his day. He sought to express beauty in all his poems. His leading principle is “Beauty is truth, truth beauty”.
Five Long Poems
• Endymion (Luna in Greek Mythology)恩底弥 翁 (his first long poem) • Isabella 伊莎贝拉 (The Pot of Basil) • The Eve of St. Agnes 圣·爱格尼斯节前夕 爱格尼斯节前夕 • Lamia 莱米亚 • Hyperion 赫里波昂
Hyperion
• The opening page of the manuscript of Keats's epic fragment, `Hyperion', begun in 1818 but not published until 1820, which was considered by Keats's contemporaries to be his greatest achievement, but by that time he had reached an advanced stage of his disease and was too ill to be encouraged. It was never finished.
Ode to a nightingale
• Written on a spring day of exceptional warmth and beauty in 1819, the Ode to a nightingale is a meditation on the eternal purity of the bird's song. Its unrelenting poignancy reminds Keats, still haunted by the painful death of his brother, of the inevitable sadness of man's mortality. • Keats composed this while staying at a friend's house, north of London. Every evening a nightingale would sing outside his window, and the bird's singing caused Keats to reflect on sad memories--the painful death of his brother & the inevitable sadness of man's mortality.

Isabella
Isabella, a young girl of a rich family, was in love with a poor servant called Lorenzo. • Her two brothers, having discovered the love affair, trick Lorenzo away, murdered him and buried him in a forest. • Isabella, besides herself with grief, found the body of her lover, buried the head in a flowerpot, set a plant of basil over it and brought it home. • Her evil brothers found out the secret.
