专题能力提升练十九词义猜测题——猜测词义类A[2020·昆明市“三诊一模”高考模拟考试] Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, 17, remembers the question that took her from the life of a regular high school student to the center of Hollywood. “Why not me?”she asked herself when she saw an open casting call for Mindy Kaling's coming-of-age comedy series Ne v er Ha v e I E v er. It was a good question, and coincidentally, also the name of Kaling's 2015 biography.Despite having no professional acting experience, Ramakrishnan got the job. The young actress plays a character named Devi whose life story is inspired by Kaling's own. Ramakrishnan credits her best friend for helping her stay confident throughout the audition (试演) process. She filmed an audition video and submitted it. About one month later, she got a phone call from Kaling and screenwriter Lang Fisher. “They told me that I got the role,” Ramakrishnan said. “I was in complete shock. I just kept saying, ‘My life is completely going to change.’”As a woman of color starring in a Netflix series, Ramakrishnan was honored as a Groundbreaker for International Day of the Girl in 2019. Her personal role models, including her high school drama teacher as well as various women in Hollywood, have played a big role in creating her world view. “My high school drama teacher is always pushing me to try new things,” the teen said. “She encouraged me to try out for plays and take risks, which now I'm known for.”The surreal experience taught her a life lesson that she thinks applies to anyone. When asked how she hopes her role will influence others, she replied, “I hope it passes this on—the ‘why not me?’Why can't I just go out and do what makes me happy? Do what makes me feel great and confident?”Clearly, it's working.1.What made Ramakrishnan successfully get the job?A.Her acting experience. B.Influence of her friend.C.Her lasting confidence. Like many cities in Sweden, Eskilstuna has an impressive recycling record. It met the EU's 2020 target of recycling 50% of waste many years ago. But almost everyone who lives here follows a strict recycling policy at home. People are expected to sort their household waste into seven separate categories, including food, textiles, cartons and metal. But what really makes the system stand out is the bright colour code. The reason for this becomes clear at the city's recycling plant. The bags arrive all jumbled up because they're collected altogether, once a fortnight from outside people's houses. But thanks to those bright colours, scanners can select the bags and separate them efficiently. The food waste in green bags is processed on site into slurry(浆) to make biogas, which powers the city's buses. One of the benefits of this method of recycling is that there is less cross-pollution , so more of the recycled waste can actually be used to make new things.Like the rest of Sweden, Eskilstuna is committed to sending zero waste from its citizens to landfill (垃圾填埋场). Waste that cannot be recycled is incinerated at a local plant to generate electricity. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels, but does create greenhouse gases. As countries around the world try to improve their recycling rates, some may look to Eskilstuna as an example to follow—as long as they think they can persuade their citizens to get busy sorting waste at home.5.How do people deal with their household waste in Eskilstuna?A.Sorting and putting it in colourful bags.B.Dyeing it with different colours.C.Processing and recycling it at home.D.Sorting and taking it out every week.6.What is the advantage of the bright colour code?A.It avoids cross-pollution entirely.B.The waste can be stored in a fixed site.C.It's easier to classify the bags of rubbish.D.The city takes on a colourful look.7.What does the underlined word “incinerated”mean in the last paragraph?A.burnt B.brokenC.reused D.washed8. Which of the following is the best title of the text?A.Tips on Sorting of Household Waste.B.A Swedish City's Recycling Efforts.C.A Unique Waste Recycling Plan.D.A New Policy on Conservation.C[2020·烟台市高考诊断性测试] If you've ever been on a fishing boat, you've probably seen crowds of birds following it, hoping to catch a snack. Now scientists use those birds' behavior to track illegal fishing boats.Researchers attached data loggers to the backs of 169 albatrosses (信天翁) in Indian oceans. Weighing only 42 grams, the devices included a GPS, which enabled them to detect the presence and intensity of radar signals emitted by boats. That information was then sent by satellite, so the researchers could track the location of the birds—and thus the radar-emitting boats—in real time. The scientists then cross-checked that data against the known locations of boats, collected from a system boats use to declare themselves, called the Automatic Identification System (AIS). And noticeable differences appeared frequently.More than a third of the times the bird “loggers”detected radar signals, and therefore a boat, but no such boat appeared in the official log—meaning that the vehicles had likely switched off their AIS—something that probably happens in illegal fishing operations. The work suggests birds could be an effective boat-monitoring tool as long as illegal fishing operations don't target the birds.Fortunately, such_a_task would be difficult. Around fishing boats, you can find hundreds of birds at any one time that are flying around. And the birds with loggers are not marked in any way. So it's not really possible for fishermen to pick out a specific bird. But what concerns researchers is that albatrosses often get caught by some fishing boats. Though regulations have been established to protect against that happening—with success—illegal boats don't necessarily obey. So scientists might be underestimating the risk posed to albatross populations.9.What characteristic of albatrosses do scientists take advantage of intheir research?A.Their feeding patterns.B.Their sense of direction.C.Their greedy behaviors.D.Their habit of following fishing boats.10. For what purpose does a boat shut off its AIS?A.To seek more fishes.B.To have it mistaken for another.C.To avoid being detected.D.To save the trouble of declaring itself.11.What does “such a task”in Paragraph 6 refer to?A.Identifying birds with loggers.B.Monitoring illegal boats.C.Tracking radar signals automatically.D.Fishing illegally.12.What could be the best title for the text?A.AIS: an Effective System to Locate BoatsB.Humans Are Good at Discovering Birds' NatureC.Data Loggers Help Fishermen Get a Good HarvestD.Scientists Use Birds to Track Illegal Fishing Operations专题能力提升练十九词义猜测题——猜测词义类A语篇类型:记叙文主题语境:人与社会——人物故事——普通高中生麦特里伊·拉玛克里斯南被好莱坞录用[文章大意]普通的高中生麦特里伊·拉玛克里斯南尽管没有专业的表演经验,但因为“为什么不是我?”这个巧合的问题而被敏迪·卡灵(Mindy Kaling)的成长喜剧系列招为演员。

The little penguin was having a hard time walking and swimming.Yellow-Purple lives with a large group of African penguins at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. African penguins are an endangered species. They are beautiful, black and white birds that are about two feet tall when fully grown, and they are very popular with the Aquarium's visitors. The staff at the Aquarium made a little support boot for Yellow-Purple from plastic. This supported her left ankle and made it much easier for her to do all the things that penguins like to do. Yellow-Purple was getting along fine with her boot, but then Dr. Jen Flower, Chief Clinical Veterinarian at Mystic Aquarium, heard about 3-D printing technology. She decided to use it to help better the boot.Luckily, Mystic Aquarium's Vice President of Education & Conservation, Kelly Matis, knew that Mystic Middle School had recently acquired a 3-D Systems printer. Kelly reached out to the school and arranged a meeting. Sue Prince, Library Media Specialist at Mystic Middle School, and seven middle school students visited Yellow-Purple to learn what was needed, and then contacted the supplier of their 3-D printer, ACT Group. With ACT Group's help, the students learned how to scan Yellow-Purple's existing foot cast, then use that data to create a more efficient boot with sculpting software. The final boot design was printed on a 3-D printer using multiple materials, allowing the boot to be flexible enough for comfortable movement, yet hard enough to support the injured tendon. The students were thrilled when they saw Yellow-Purple walking almost back to normal. It was a great way to put science into practice. Celebrities like Ashton Kutcher shared Yellow-Purple's story on Facebook, inspiring more than 1.5 million combined views.1.What can we learn about African penguins?A.They are very large in number.B.They are dangerous species.C.They are beautiful when young.D.They are attractive to visitors.2.Who came up with the idea of an updated support boot?A.The ACT Group. B.Dr. Jen Flower.C.Kelly Matis. D.Sue Prince.3.What preparation work was done before the students got the ACT Group's help?A.They reached school on time.B.They held a meeting to discuss the problem.C.They paid a visit to Yellow-Purple.D.They contacted the ACT Group for supplies.4.What is the best title for this text?A.The Development of 3-D PrintingB.A Penguin Benefiting from High-techC.An Effort to Put Science into PracticeD.A Software That Can DesignB[2020·济南市5月高三模拟]Telling someone they are not hired is never an easy job, but all hiring managers will face this difficult situation many times in their careers. While everyone fears denials on some level, it is important to understand that not everyone will fit in with every job. Further, there are times when the applicant quality will be so great, a decision to reject an applicant may not stand for that applicant's abilities but the overall quality of the field. There are a number of methods that can be used to get the message across that a person is not hired. In many cases, especially for those who have never been called for an interview, a simple form letter may be sufficient. In other cases, where someone may have been called for an interview, a phone call or letter could be chosen to deliver the message that they were not hired. In cases where there may be an ongoing relationship with the person not hired, it may be best to break the news in person, though this has the obvious potential of being more uncomfortable. Above all, it is best to always be honest with those who didn't get the job. Lying is never acceptable.Generally, it is not a good idea to tell someone specific reasons why they are not hired for a job. This can only lead to resentment(怨恨) and regret. However, there may be specific times when this could be a good idea. For example, if an applicant is promising and the hiring manager believes another position will be opening up that suits the applicant's skills, this could be a way to let that person know they may soon have another opportunity. In all cases, even if you feel someone has cheated to obtain an interview, never behave in a way which shows you are superior to them. This is unprofessional and reflects very poorly not only on the hiringmanager, but on the organization as a whole.5.Why are some applicants refused according to Paragraph 1?A.They are interested in other fields.B.They aren't qualified for the position.C.They are afraid of making decisions.D.They lack the courage to face failures.6.How may a not-interviewed applicant be informed of the rejection?A.By receiving a formal phone call.B.By getting a simple form letter.C.By checking a message online.D.By attending a personal meeting.7.In what case will applicants be told exactly why they are not hired?A.They regret applying for the job.B.They demand specific explanations.C.They may be capable of another post.D.They have submitted false information.8.What can be inferred about the position of hiring managers?A.It calls for professional skills.B.It attracts the applicants most.C.It doesn't allow for any mistake.D.It requires honesty and ambitionC[2020·烟台市高考适应性练习] The Tokyo Summer Olympics is going green. The 5,000 medals Japan has made are more special than most. One novel focus of the Tokyo Olympics is to be “sustainable”—to avoid using too many natural resources, so that the games are easy on the environment. As part of this goal, the organizers decided to make all of the Olympic medals out of metal recycled from old electronics.Almost all electronics are made with small amounts of “precious metals” , like gold and silver. But collecting enough of these metals to make 5,000 medals was a huge challenge. That's because the amount of metal in each device is tiny. It would take about 20,000 cell phones to get just 1 kilogram of gold.Beginning in April 2017, the organizers placed collection boxes around the country, and asked people to turn in their old electronic devices. Soon people began to respond to the initiative, turning in smartphones, digital cameras, handheld games, and laptops. At first, collection went slowly, but soon more and more areas began to take part. By the end, 1,621 local governments had helped out with the collection process. Then came the job of breaking those devices down into smaller pieces. After being taken apart and sorted, the small electronics were smelted(熔练) to get all the gold, silver, and bronze elements. This is a tricky job, which calls for careful attention and good skill. It's also dangerous, because some of the metals and other things aren't safe for people to touch or breathe.By the end of March, 2019, the organizers had hit their targets of getting enough metal for the medals. They had collected around 32 kilograms of gold, 4,100 kilograms of silver and 2,200 kilograms of bronze. And now all the 5,000 medals are available for the would-be winners.9.What can we know about the Tokyo Olympics medals?A.They are hugely valuable.B.They are of high quality.C.They are designed uniquely.D.They are made from e-waste.10.What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?A.The difficulty of making the medals.B.The process of collecting old electronics.C.The initiative to recycle used smartphones.D.The classification of the collected devices.11.The underlined word “tricky”in Paragraph 5 means “________”.A.creative B.well-paidC.demanding D.time-consuming12.What's the purpose of Tokyo's way of making the medals?A.To advocate sustainable use of resources.B.To promote the spirit of Olympic Games.C.To introduce a new technique to make medals.D.To call people's attention to environmental damage.

考点分类练(十一)词句猜测题——代词指代类A(2021·山东淄博一模)Several years ago, when someone used camera covers to protect against possible monitoring, it was not popular to talk about it. Today, people use various types of tapes to cover the web cameras and microphones. There are many types of spyware that can dive into our devices and secretly spy on them, recording everything they do. Such programmes may infect not only computers but also smartphones. Your data may be used by hackers who will try to request money for not exposing your private information or by companies like NSO Group who created a kind of spyware to “provide authorised governments with technology that helps struggle against terror and crime”.In my opinion, the protection technique is highly overestimated. Users tape the cameras and microphones through lack of understanding of how their devices work and how the malware(恶意软件) works. Hackers and even secret services do not have enough resources to monitor all victims using the cameras or microphones. If they need to get any information, they get it by sending a targeted virus to your device, which will not be stopped by the tapes. Such a virus will find what to steal—from personal photos and videos to passwords from social networks, browser history, bank accounts and so on.It is unwise to believe that attackers will not be able to find a way to spy on you, even if the device, discharged to zero, can still deliver data about your location, using the smartphones of the surrounding people as signal repeaters. Let us face it: we live in an era when it is extremely difficult to hide something and a piece of tape is clearly not the most useful tool in the struggle for your privacy.Again, to be able to spy on you, attackers need to plant the malware in your device. To prevent the malware from entering your device, do not click suspected links and email attachments. Use strong passwords for email, social media and online bank accounts.1.What does the underlined word“them”in paragraph2refer to?A.Cameras.B.Types.C.Programmes.D.Devices.2.What is NSO Group?A.A group of hackers.B.A company developing spyware.C.A group of terrorists and criminals.D.A company fighting against crime.3.Why does the author think “the protection technique is highly overestimated”?A.People know little about their devices.B.Hackers have no access to others.C.It hardly prevents the malware from getting privacy.D.It can’t cover the cameras completely.B(2021·安徽合肥高三第二次教学质量检测)Ever since she received a little toy airliner as a birthday gift, Kate has been attracted by flight. From flying remote-controlled airplanes to building her own model ones, Kate has always considered flying a plane one of her passions, but only until recently has she been able to take that to new heights. When Kate heard about the Upwind Scholarship from her school counselor, she knew it was an extraordinary opportunity to realise her dream. The programme’s mission is to provide all the training necessary to obtain a private pilot’s license (PPL) for students in between their junior and senior year of high school free of charge. After completing a lengthy application and her subsequent acceptance into the programme, Kate began her training last spring. Normally, recipients of the scholarship would attend ground school in person where they learn the fundamentals of flying. Due to the pandemic, however, Kate spent hours each weekend studying online lessons in her room whenever she got a break from homework. Once summer came around, Kate and three peers put in two straight weeks of ground school, reviewing flight training from nine to five every day.“It was the toughest part of the programme,” Kate said. After completing that portion of ground school, Kate was finally able to begin flying at the San Carlos Airport with the other scholarship recipients from around the Bay Area. Flying, especially for first-timers like Kate, is a hands-on process involving lots of checklists to make sure the important tasks are being taken care of.Now, having finished the programme and earned her PPL, Kate plans on training as a flight instructor and hopes to become an airline pilot in her future. She credits the Upwind Scholarship to all she’s been able to accomplish so far and hopes that anyone who shares her passion will look into it.“It is a very hard scholarship to win, and you have to be truly interested in flight,” Kate said.“It can’t be something like ‘Oh, why don’t I try flying this summer?’ You have to be ready to do a lot of work and put effort into succeeding in the programme.”4.What does the underlined word“that”in paragraph1refer to?A.Her skill of building model airplanes.B.Her wish to travel around the world.C.Her childhood dream of becoming a pilot.D.Her desire to fly remote-controlled airplanes.5.What is the goal of the Upwind Scholarship?A.To help students in need to achieve their dreams.B.To provide necessary training for private pilots for free.C.To give students expert advice on earning a scholarship.D.To prepare high school students to become a private pilot.6.What did Kate do in ground school?A.She took online lessons on flying.B.She went over the fundamentals of flying.C.She did some research into the pandemic.D.She finished applying for the programme.7.Which of the following best describes Kate?A.Confident and aggressive.B.Strong-willed and patient.C.Demanding and courageous.D.Ambitious and hard-working.C(2021·河北秦皇岛二模)Every four or five years, vast quantities of warm water build up along the west coast of South America. This phenomenon, El Niño, creates storms that cause destructive floods. The result is costly.Modern farmers come to terms with El Niño. They use money saved in good years to rebuild in bad ones. But history suggests it need not be like that. In a paper published recently, Ari Caramanica, an archaeologist in Lima, shows how it used to be done. And the answer seems to be “better”.Dr Caramanica and her colleagues have been studying the Pampa de Mocan, a coastal desert plain in northern Peru. It is not suitable for farming. Its soil contains little organic matter and the annual rainfall in non-Niño years is usually less than two centimetres. Today’s farmers therefore depend on canals to carry water from local rivers to their fields. It had been assumed that ancient farmers had a similar arrangement—and so they did. But Dr Caramanica also found eight canals that could carry water far beyond the range of modern farms. She thought that they were intended to guide the floodwaters arriving during Niño years. Around a quarter of the ancient agricultural infrastructure of this area seemed to have been built only for managing Niño-generated floodwaters.Evidence from pollen supports this theory, revealing that the Pampa de Mocan produced lots of crops in some years, while remaining nearly barren in others. The team also uncovered two cisterns(蓄水箱) in the area serviced by the extended canals. These, probably, were used to store extra floodwaters. These findings suggest that, rather than resisting El Niño, early farmers in the Pampa de Mocan were ready to make use of it when it arrived. Modern farmers might do well to learn from them.8.What does the recent study focus on?A.Living with El Niño.B.Effects of El Niño.C.Farming in the desert.D.Water shortage in Peru.9.What does the underlined word“they”in paragraph4refer to?A.Ancient farmers.B.Rivers.C.Farms.D.Canals.10.What lesson can be learned from early farmers?A.Every advantage has its disadvantage.B.In every difficulty lies an opportunity.C.Sharp tools make good work.D.It’s never too late to mend.11.In which section of a website may this text appear?cation.B.Travel.C.Business.D.Science.考点分类练(十一)词句猜测题——代词指代类【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。

It's been operating in our small town of Sommières since the 13th century, but we've only lived here for three months. From Monday to Friday, life is all about the kids. I'm busy helping my children deal with life in a French school. It's not easy, and their stress is the whole family's stress,as Keith and I are occupied with the daily school run, piles of homework and school notes in French. But on Saturday, the market is for me. I feel so peaceful as I walk along the quiet street toward the busy town square. The knife-sharpening man is there, operating a machine that looks like it dates from the Industrial Revolution. There're street musicians with guitars and microphones, and the sound of beautiful songs fills the air. And the food,of course,is delicious. The cheese man doesn't speak—he just points and cuts, offering a piece from his knife. Lines come out of the door for fresh bread at the bakery. Organic vegetables, herbs and desserts are a feast for the eyes, before being put into the bag to be enjoyed later for lunch. The noises and smells of the market are unfamiliar, but their procedures are clear to me. This is part of why I love the place so much:Unlike during the week, when I'm constantly faced with my own difficulties, I know how this place works. My terrible French isn't the barrier to communication that it is in other circumstances. At school and in the village,I can't joke or join a conversation, and although the other parents at school are kind, I'm an outsider. But at the market, I'm just another customer with a basket. Surrounded by day trippers, I feel like a local—greeting people I know and petting dogs.My Saturday experiences allow me to hope that in the near future I'll feel equally confident in my everyday life. Until then, Saturdays prepare me for the coming week of the school run.1. He spends 10 hours a day on the Internet. Now Kyle's smartphone is taken away. “I'm really worried because I won't have my phone for 12 days but I trust other things will fill my time,”he said. The teachers here do what they can to get them socializing again; for many, the only friends they have had are online. “I have relationships on the Internet and a real distance has grown with my real-life friends and I know it's not good,” Kyle said. The teachers show them other possibilities and bring back dreams and hopes that have been buried by their addictions. “We teach them methods of self-managing their desire to use the Internet so they can continue to use them when they go back home,” Shim Yong-chool, a teacher here, said. After just two days Kyle said it was helping. He's set a good example to others though he hasn't reached the goal completely.South Korean psychiatrists (精神病学家) are urging more actions as they are finding evidence that too much screen time is a barrier to the developing minds. Professor Kang Seak Young from Dankook University said the addiction was damaging critical thinking. “It affects the frontal lobes (额叶) which are important for critical analysis,”Professor Kang said. “Reading a book while guessing what happens in the story next shows activity in frontal lobes but playing popular computer games for a long time shows no activity.”South_Korea_is_one_of_the_most_wired_nations_on_Earth,_but_it_d oes_have_a_cost. On the shore, in the background, stand three guards, talking to each other. One of them has a deadly weapon hanging casually on his shoulder. This powerful image has made people question the motivation for this kind of tourism, or ecotourism. Does our proximity (接近) to large animals in the wild, frequently fueled by a desire for exciting images, lead to such animals becoming accustomed to human contact? If that is the case, surely the losing side will end up paying the ultimate price for such proximity. To my sorrow, I have recently returned from a trip to Svalbard, and indeed stood two weeks ago on the very beach where the bear was shot. The bear's death should never have happened. Was the beach examined beforehand? Was there access to flares (照明弹) to scare off a bear that appeared suddenly? These are standard measures for any operator. Theincident is probably the result of a terrible systematic failure.Nevertheless, the incident should not negate the value of ecotourism. In its best form, this kind of travel has very little impact, or indeed has a positive effect, on the environment where it takes place. This can be by making financial donations to conservation groups, providing income to local communities, or ensuring protection of certain areas or animals. In Svalbard, visitors become ambassadors for the endangered polar bear, increasing awareness of the fact that the far greater danger they are facing is the sea ice melt in the Arctic Ocean.Ecotourism is an expanding market that brings benefits as well as challenges to the regions around the world in which it operates. Simply_closing_off_these_regions_is_not_the_answer.9.Why was the polar bear dead?A.It was probably hunted for its fur by tourists.B.It was probably frightened to death by flares.C.The proper procedures weren't probably followed.D.The beach wasn't probably equipped with safety devices.10.What is the third paragraph mainly about?A.Ecotourism could be developed properly.B.Financial donations should be strongly advocated.C.Environmental awareness has greatly increased.D.Visitors have a guilty conscience about ecotourism.11.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?A.More challenges haven't yet been accepted.B.Better measures for conducting ecotourism are a good choice.C.The environmental benefits from ecotourism are very obvious.D.The positive effects of protecting tourists haven't yet been felt.12.What is the purpose of the text?A.To cause readers to focus on polar bears.B.To stimulate readers to reflect on ecotourism.C.To stress side effects that ecotourism has caused.D.To analyze the reason why the polar bear was killed.

Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find n atural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5' 5' sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container— perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across andthree feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole. Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighti ng the sheet’s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圆锥体) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸发) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment out through the tube, and won’t ha ve to break down the still every time you need a drink.33. What does the underlined phrase “the water catcher” in paragraph 2 refer to?A. The tube.B. The still.C. The hole.D. The cup.【名师点睛】近年来全国统一高考中加大了对考生猜词义能力的考查,因此,把握一定的猜词技巧,对突破高考阅读明白得、提高同学们的英语语言能力都有专门重要的意义。

考点分类练(十)词句猜测题——词语猜测类A(2021·山东烟台高三诊断性测试)One in five children starting primary school in the UK are overweight. By the time they leave school, that figure will rise to one in three. The chance of them being overweight in adulthood, which brings a range of associated health risks, is high, at 50%-75%.The root cause of diet-related fatness is no secret: an energy imbalance between the quantity of food being consumed and the level of physical activity being conducted. Addressing this imbalance needs to be, in part, a review of our diet. More fresh ingredients(材料) especially fruit and vegetables, less processed foods and fewer additives(添加剂) are all important factors in building a balanced diet. The Department of Health has recognised that a collective approach, rather than just individual behaviour change, is a successful way of achieving this. Universal adjustments like a blanket decrease in sugar content influence the way we eat through the choices available to us.Applying this approach to school kitchens makes sense. They have an important role to play in maintaining healthy diets. Offering a school menu packed with fresh ingredients and without artificial additives makes a direct and effective impact on what children eat at school. It’s an area the Soil Association consistently works to handle through its Food for Life programme—working with schools to transform food culture, improve food education and encourage lasting changes to the way schools think about food. It works. In Food for Life schools, pupils are a third less likely to eat no fruit or vegetables than those in the control schools. One way for schools to get involved is a Food for Life Served Here award, which means at least 75% of dishes are prepared on site using fresh ingredients. It encourages local seasonal produce and requires a commitment to environmentally friendly produce. At its heart, the award is designed to support health and enhance food understanding.Over 50% of English primary schools have such an award already, serving around 1.7 million meals each day to over 10,000 schools and it’s a figure we’ll see grow.1.What does the underlined word“Addressing”in paragraph2mean?A.Tackling.B.Ignoring.C.Maintaining.D.Postponing.2.Which approach will work for students to build a balanced diet?A.Stopping them eating alone in schools.B.Getting them aware of the harm of fatness.C.Ensuring healthy recipes on school menus.D.Increasing the availability and flavour of food.3.What can we say about the Food for Life programme?A.It’s a heavy load on schools.B.It’s complicated to operate.C.It’s a temporary project.D.It’s a fruitful attempt.4.Which type of food may the Food for Life Served Here award promote?A.Sugary snacks.B.First-class sausages.C.High-quality imported beef.D.Freshly picked organic beans.B(2021·江西南昌高三教学质量检测)Perhaps thousands of people have searched for a bronze chest full of gold and jewels hidden in the Rocky Mountains between Santa Fe and the Canadian border hidden by an adventurer. At least four people died in their search for the treasure. But it’s all over now. Fenn’s treasure has been found. The 89-year-old adventurer named Forrest Fenn, who created the treasure hunt, announced the news via his website.“I don’t know the person who found it, but the poem in my book led him to the precise spot,” Fenn wrote.“The treasure was confirmed by a photograph the lucky finder sent me.”Forrest Fenn, the man who started the hunt, lives in Santa Fe. He was a pilot in the Vietnam War and later accumulated(积累) his wealth as a dealer in art and antiques. Fenn was diagnosed(诊断) with cancer in 1988 and had planned to die peacefully in the woods with his treasure. But when his cancer became less serious, he changed his plan, eventually writing the poem that described his dream resting place, which is where he hid the treasure. The poem appeared in a memoir called The Thrill of the Chase. Fenn said that the chest wouldn’t be found by accident; only a treasure hunter who correctly interpreted the clues would find it.Several treasure hunters went missing while attempting to find the chest, including hunter Jeff Murphy and Mike Petersen, both of whom went missing in Yellowstone National Park in 2017. Fenn said that he had never been to that park, and that the treasure was not in a dangerous place.“It was in the thick forest of the Rocky Mountains and had not been moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago,” Fenn wrote on his website. It is illegal to remove anything from a national park, which would cause trouble in legally claiming the treasure if it was found there.5.What contributed to the finding of the treasure?A.Fenn’s announcement.B.A poem in Fenn’s book.C.Fenn’s vivid description.D.A photo on Fenn’s website.6.What is the third paragraph mainly about?A.Who Forrest Fenn was.B.Where Fenn hid the treasure.C.How the treasure hunt began.D.What Fenn did to find the treasure.7.What can we learn about Fenn’s treasure?A.It was in Yellowstone National Park.B.It was found by someone by chance.C.It was moved from one place to another.D.It was in Fenn’s chosen resting place.8.What does the underlined word“claiming”in the last paragraph probably mean?A.Taking.B.Burying.C.Protecting.D.Acknowledging.CThe spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16. He walked towards it and found a balloon attached to a piece of paper.“Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. It was a Christmas wish list, all in Spanish. He suspected that a child had tried to send a wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. And he wondered whether he could find the child. It would be difficult, but based on the prevailing(盛行的) wind, Heiss was pretty sure where it came from—just across the border, the city of Nogales, Mexico. Heiss then posted about his quest on the website, attaching photos, hoping someone might know the girl’s family.A few days passed with no leads. Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, he sent a private message to a radio station based in Nogales. The next morning, Heiss awoke to a message from the radio station: They had located Dayami, an eight-year-old girl, and her family, who indeed lived in Nogales.“It just changed my entire day,” said Heiss. Having bought just about everything on Dayami’s list, Heiss and his wife, at the radio station, met the family.“It was a beautiful and healing experience for us ... Since our only son died ten years ago, being around children at Christmas time has been absent in our lives,” Heiss said.“We now have friends for life. And, for a day, that border fence with its wire melted away.”9.What did Heiss find on December 16?A.A Christmas wish list from a child.B.A mass of grassland.C.A letter addressed to him.D.A beautiful red balloon.10.What does the underlined word“leads”in paragraph4probably mean?A.Examples.B.Clues.C.Suggestions.D.Plans.11.What message does the text intend to convey?A.Love knows no borders.B.A bold attempt is half success.C.We should help those who help themselves.D.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.考点分类练(十)词句猜测题——词语猜测类【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。

专题能力提升练二十词义猜测题——猜测指代类A[2020·广州市综合检测二] Special boxes lie at the bottom of my locked filing cabinet. Deposited there are important letters and cards collected throughout my life, from my grandparents, school friends, parents, wife and son. Since the invention of e-mail though, they've been few and far between.Tonight is New Year's Eve 2029 and there's a very special box of letters I want to look at. But first there's something I have to do—The Ritual (惯例).I go to my trusted computer and start. I begin to type: Dear—I leave the name blank for now, anticipating the thrill of typing it in. “I hope you are well and I wonder what your life is like. Are you still planning to move to that villa in Portugal? Did your son marry Fiona? Is your mother still alive?” Questions surge into my mind. For the next two hours I sit writing—about what I've been doing for the last year, my failing health, my increasing wealth and my sometime difficult marriage; then about my goals and ambitions. Will he be interested? Do I climb Mt. Kilimanjaro? Do I get that novel published? The one that's been rejected more times than I care to think about. Finally, it's finished at 11:30 pm. I fill in the recipient's name, print my letter, sign and address it and then seal it up with tape. I then delete the document and empty the trash folder—to avoid the possibility of temptation. That completes the ritual!I walk over to my “special box”. It contains ten long, white, thick envelopes, all with the same handwriting. I place the one I have just written in at the back and take the one out at the front. It's dated 2019, and labelled “to be opened on 31st December, 2029” .The cycle is finally complete! I open it, trembling with anticipation. I begin to read, tearing up a little as I do so. Throughout the last ten long, eventful years, of life, death, joy and heartbreak, it has been waiting patiently in this box for me, though I now have no memory of ever having written it.1. Why does the author receive fewer “important letters” these days?A.He has moved from his original address.B.He is rarely in contact with his friends and family.C.People communicate with each other less often than before.D.Electronic communication has largely replaced physical letters.2.Who does the underlined word “he”in Paragraph 4 refer to?A.The author himself.B.The author's son.C.The author's school friend.D.The author's book publisher.3.Why does the author delete the completed letter from his computer?A.So that no one else will be able to read it.B.So that he won't read it ahead of schedule.C.Because he decides at last not to send it.D.Because he wants to forget what has happened.4.How does the author feel as he is about to open his special letter?A.Relieved. B.Moved.C.Excited. D.Afraid.B[2020·合肥市高三第三次教学质量检测]Sharon Okpoe has lived her entire 17 years in Makoko, known as the world's largest “floating slum(贫民窟)”,built on a lake in Lagos, Nigeria. Okpoe's father is a fisherman, and her mother sells smoked fish.As many as two-thirds of the city's 21 million residents live in slums. “Most girls are trapped in a terrible cycle of poverty. Many of them are not thinking of education, a plan for the future,”Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin, a computer programmer in Lagos, recalled. But several times a week, girls like Okpoe get a glimpse of another world when they attend GirlsCoding, a free program run by the Pearls Africa Foundation that seeks to educate and excite girls about computer programming. Since 2012, the group has helped more than 400 disadvantaged girls gain the technical skills and confidence they need to transform their lives. It's the vision of Ajayi-Akinfolarin, who left a successful career to devote herself to this work. She'd noticed how few women worked in this growing field—a 2013 government survey found that less than 8% of Nigerian women were employed in technology jobs. She wanted to fix the gender gap. “Technology is a space that's dominated by men. Why should we leave that to guys?” she said. “I believe girls need opportunities.”Now, dozens of girls aged 10 to 17 get trained in computer programming technology. “I believe you can still find diamonds in these places,” Ajayi-Akinfolarin said. “They need to be shown another life.”One way her program does this is by taking the students to visit technology companies—not only showing them what technology can do, but also helping them visualize themselves joining the industry.Okpoe, for one, has taken this to heart. She helped create an app called Makoko Fresh, enabling fishermen like her father to sell seafood directly to customers. She even wants to become a software engineer and hopes to study computer science at Harvard.“One thing I want my girls to hold onto is that, regardless of where they are coming from, they can make it,”Ajayi said. “They are coders. They are thinkers. Their future is bright.”5.What can we learn about GirlsCoding?A.It encourages girls to land a job in education.B.It offers Nigerian girls in need part-time jobs.C.It helps girls working in Lagos to fight poverty.D.It teaches girls in Makoko computer programming.6.What did Ajayi-Akinfolarin think about the growing field in Paragraph 3 ?A.Men could do far better in technology jobs.B.Girls should get equal work opportunities.C.Men normally got paid more than women.D.Girls tended to devote themselves to work.7.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A.Rebuilding the girls' confidence.B.Training the girls to find diamonds.C.Presenting a different life to the girls.D.Taking the girls to technology companies.8.What can we infer about Okpoe from the last paragraph?A.She got fishermen to benefit from her app.B.She was admitted to Harvard University.C.She took her father's suggestion to heart.D.She made some changes to computer science.C[2020·青岛市高三统一质量检测]In life, once on a path, we tend to follow it, for better or worse. What's sad is that even if it's the latter, we often accept it anyway because we are so used to the way things are that we don't even recognize that they could be different. This is a phenomenon psychologists call functional fixedness. This classic experiment will give you an idea of how it works and a sense of whether you may have fallen into the same trap:People are given a box of tacks (大头钉) and some matches and asked to find a way to attach a candle to a wall so that it burns properly. Typically, the subjects try tacking the candle to the wall or lighting it to fix it withmelted wax. The psychologists had, of course, arranged it so that neither of these obvious approaches would work. The tacks are too short, and the paraffin (石蜡) doesn't stick to the wall. So how can you complete the task? The successful technique is to use the tack box as a candle holder. You empty it, tack it to the wall, and stand the candle inside it. To think of that, you have to look beyond the box's usual role as a receptacle just for tacks and reimagine it serving an entirely new purpose. That is difficult because we all suffer to one degree or another from functional fixedness. The inability to think in new ways affects people in every corner of society. The political theorist Hannah Arendt coined the phrase “frozen thoughts”to describe deeply held ideas that we no longer question but should. In Arendt's eyes, the self-content reliance on such accepted “truths”also made people blind to ideas that didn't fit their world view, even when there was plenty of evidence for them.Frozen thinking has nothing to do with intelligence, she said. “It can be found in highly intelligent people.”9.What does the underlined word “it”in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.The experiment. B.Functional fixedness.C.The path. D.The thinking.10.Which way is hard to think of to complete the task?A.Tacking the candle to the wall.B.Fixing the candle with melted wax.C.Using the tack box as a candle holder.D.Lighting the candle to stand it.11.Which of the following statements will Hannah Arendt agree with?A.People should question.B.We should be used to the way things are.C.People shouldn't accept the idea that doesn't fit their world view.D.The smarter people are, the more open they are to the new things.12.What's the passage mainly about?A.An interesting experiment.B.A psychological phenomenon.C.A theory to be proved.D.The opinion of Hannah Arendt.
