Passage One
Young women are wearing the new high platform shoes that came into style not long ago. Young women enjoy wearing stylish clothes. They also enjoy being taller while they are wearing these shoes.
But doctors are not very happy with the platform shoes. Foot specialists report that many women hurt their feet by wearing them. These specialists say that if you turn your ankle when wearing a normal shoe, the foot can easily return to its regular position. However, if you fall while walking on a high platform shoes, your foot may turn so far that you will break a bone in the foot or ankle. There is also a possibility that these shoes cause backaches. Many platform shoes have high heels, and women who wear them say that these shoes sometimes make them feel tired. (It has been found that people use more energy when walking on high-heeled shoes.)
Because the platforms are very thick and stiff, these shoes could cause into accidents. The driver might not be able to feel the

Passage two The High Cost of Living
Many families in the United States have a larger income now than
ever before, but people are finding it difficult to make ends meet anyway. Almost everyone is wondering, “ what happens to all my money? I never seem to have anything left to put away.”
Why isn’t a dollar worth as much as it used to be? One dollar is always worth the same amount, that is, 100 cents. But the value of a dollar is how much it can buy. The value of money depends on the cost of living. Economists say that the cost of living is the money that a
family must pay for the necessities of life such as food, housing or rent, clothes, and medical expenses. For many years now, the cost of living has increased greatly, so the value of the dollar has decreased. When a dollar has a low value, you cannot buy as many things with it.
No one fully understands why the cost of living keeps increasing but economists believe that workers and producers can make prices go up. As
workers earn more money, they have more money to spend, so they demand more good. If there is a great demand for certain goods, the prices of these goods go up. At the same time, if there’s a shortage of goods, the prices also go up.
For example, if everyone wants to buy more and more gas, the price of gas goes up. When companies withhold gas from buyers, they can also make the price of gas go up.
Families need to know what happens to their money. They need to make their income meet cost
3
of living, so many people plan a family budget. A budget is a list of monthly expenses. If your expenses add up to more than your income, you must find ways to save money. Maybe you’re spending too much on entertainment. Or if you’re spending too much on clothes, you may w ant to sew your own clothes. Budgeting helps you spend your money wisely as the cost of living increases.

Passage three Teachers and Actors
To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor: you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear.
Watch a good teacher and you will see that he does not sit
motionless before his class: he stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.
The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn’t mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important diffe rences between the teacher’s work and the actor’s. the actor has to speak words which he has learnt by hear; he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways
4
in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem
natural on the stage.
A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don’t understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to suit his act to the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.
I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage play because their brains wouldn’t keep discipline: they could not keep strictly to what another had written.
11. What is the text about?
A. how to become a good teacher

C what teachers and actors could learn from each other
D .the similarities and differences between a teacher’s work and an actor’s

B. The teacher knows how to control his voice better than an actor.
C. The teacher has to deal with unexpected situations.
D. The teacher has to use more facial expressions.
13. The main difference between students in class and a theatre audience is that____. A. students can move around in the classroom
B. students must keep silent while theatre audience needn’t
C. no memory work is needed for the students
D. the students must take part in their teachers’ plays
14. A go od teacher’s voice ______.
A. should be clear and fully under his control
B. should not be too loud or too low
C. should be fixed before he goes to class
D. all of the above
15. Which of the following is true?
A. A teachers have to learn by heart what they are going to say in class.
B. A teacher cannot decide beforehand what exactly he is going to say in class.
C. A teacher must speak louder than an actor.

Passage four Will It Matter if I Skip Breakfast?
If you have to miss one meal a day ( or if you want to do so), which meal will cause you fewest health problems if you don’t eat it? If they have to make a decision of this type, most people
(especially dieters or very busy people) will choose to skip breakfast.
However, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast
( the meal which “ breaks” your “fast” which started the night before) to be the most important meal of the day. If we eat a good breakfast, they say, we will have the energy and nutrients we need to begin our working day with vigor and hopefully with good humor. Nevertheless, many people skip breakfast or substitute a donut and a cup of coffee for a well-balanced meal. What happens if we ignore the importance of
5
breakfast?
One recent study conducted in the United States tested a large number of people. Participants included both males and females who ranged in age from 12 to 83. during the experiment, these people were
given a variety of breakfasts, and sometimes, they had to skip breakfast completely. Special tests, including blood tests and endurance tests, were set up to analyze how well the participants’ bodies functioned when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast.
The results showed that if a person eats an adequate breakfast, he
or she will work more efficiently and more productively than if he or she skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person’s work involves mental activity. The study showed that if schoolchildren eat fruit, eggs, bread, and milk before going to school, they will learn more quickly and will be able to concentrate on their lessons for a longer period of time than if their breakfast diet is inadequate.
The study also showed that, contrary to what many people believe, if you skip breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat too much for lunch and end up gaining weight instead of losing. So remember, if you are on a diet, skipping breakfast will not help you. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.
