A: Hello everyone! I'm ——. Welcome to Hot English!
B:我是_____。
A:Yes,and today our topic is Mark Boudevaul, from Beverly, West Virginia. And he has several ways that he makes a living.
A: Primarily, Mark is a beekeeper.
B: Beekeeper?
A: Bee Keeper!
A: He's also the host of a bluegrass radio show and is also a musician himself.
B: Wow.
A: He plays the steel guitar that you hear in the background.
A: Raising bees sounds like such interesting work.
A: Mark started bee keeping when he was around 17 years old. He says a guy a couple farms over, meaning a neighbor, had bees and Mark was intrigued.
A: Right. So Mark pestered his neighbor long enough ...
A: Right. To pester means to bother somebody. So, Mark pestered his neighbor to teach him about bee keeping and it worked. He started when he was about 17. And he got his own bees when he was about 18. And he is 48 now so, that's about 30 years.
A: Sometimes you have to pester, pester, pester, pester somebody to get what you want.
Listen!
B: Exactly. Bee keeping is definitely seasonal because, of course, bees need flowers and in the dead of winter there are no flowers. Mark said: It's a seasonal job in that bees are only really working when flowers are in bloom and in the dead of winter there's no flowers.
B: Mark said that bee keeping keeps him going in the summertime. During the winter he finds other things to keep him going. He think this is very interesting.
B: To keep himself going through a winter in West Virginia Mark does something very interesting. Like raising donkeys.
A: 什么?
B: You heard it right, Mark also raises donkeys to give people rides on the trails through the beautiful mountains of West Virginia.
See next time!Good-bye!
B:And I am your old friend,______.Welcome to Hot English.
这是一个丈夫在对他的的妻子讲话: “Honey, let me take you out to dinner. But you know I don’t feel like dressing up to go some place fancy. How about just going down the street to the greasy spoon and getting hamburgers?”
A: 大家也许还有点蒙蒙的,那我们再举一个例子吧,这是一个人在和朋友说话: “Mike, you ought to try the potstickers at that little Chinese joint on New York Avenue. It looks like a greasy spoon but the potstickers are great and the price is cheap.”
Potluck
Potluck lunch” or “potluck supper”
