But no other swimmer is coming into the Beijing Olympics with the conditioning and records that Phelps possesses.Phelps secured his eight-race Olympic schedule by winning the 100-meter butterfly at the U.S. swimming trials in Omaha, Nebraska. To surpass Mark Spitz, Phelps says he has to overcome just one competitor in Beijing-himself.“You never know what can happen,” said Phelps. “The only person I can worry about is myself. And, if I can prepare myself the best way that I can, then that is really all I can ask. If I go in there and I do a best time and still get beat, that is all I can ask for. So, you know, I am trying to prepare myself the best way I can. And just go out there and swim fast.”When he was 15, Phelps got his first taste of international competition at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where he became the youngest U.S. male Olympian swimmer since 1932.In 2001, Michael Phelps began his assault on the record books, becoming the youngest swimmer to break a world record in winning the 200-meter butterfly in 1 minute 54.92 seconds (1:54.92) at the national championships. Four months later in Japan, he lowered the mark at the World Championships by 34-100ths of one second (1:54.58). Phelps was named the 2001 USA Swimmer of the Year. The two-time Olympian became the first athlete ever to win eight medals total at a non-boycotted Olympic Games, collecting six gold and two silvers in 2004 in Athens. Phelps set four individual world records and won seven gold medals at the 2007 World Championships to become the winningest athlete in World Championship history.Phelps says his success and experience has prepared him well for Beijing.“Right now, I am more relaxed than I was in 2004 going into the Olympics. You know, after going through everything I had been through in the last four years, it helped me prepare a little bit better for these games coming up and really understand what is gonna happen. You know, before Athens, I was a deer in the headlights, and did not really know what to expect.”Phelps has set his best times in all of his events since March 2007. At the recent U.S. swimming trials, he lowered the world record in the 400-meter individual medley to 4 minutes 5.25 seconds. His fans expect to see more records, and Michael Phelps has no doubt that he can improve on all of his results.“I do not think anything is too high. The only way for you to limit yourself is if you put a limit on yourself. The sky is the limit, and the more you use your imagination, the farther you will go. I think anything is possible. I set very high goals for myself. And I work as hard as I can to get there.”The talented Phelps began swimming at the age of seven. Four years later, he started training under his current coach Bob Bowman at his Baltimore, Maryland Swi m Club. Bowman has watched and guided Phelps’ steady improvement over the years. He says the past four years have been especially impressive.“Probably the two areas where Michael has improved the most are, number one, his physical strength. And that is a result of a much more intense strength-training program since Athens. And the other area where he really has improved the most is his breaststroke. It has gone from being a stroke that was quite weak in Athens to being a strength of his.”Michael Phelps will be one of the busiest athletes in Beijing, as he is scheduled to swim six individual events and possibly three relays in nine days. Including heats, semifinals and finals, he could swim as many as 20 races. At the end, Phelps could be standing as the most decorated athlete in Olympic history.题目:1.2008 Beijing Olympic is Phelp’s first time for swimming in Olympic Games.文本:你的答案:正确答案:F得分:老师意见:题目:2.It is a mission impossible for Michael Phelps to win the championship.文本:你的答案:正确答案:F得分:老师意见:题目:3.According to his Bob Bowman, Michael Phelps has achieved great progress in mainly two areas, physical strength and breaststroke.文本:你的答案:正确答案:T得分:老师意见:2.Exercise 2: Direction: Listen to the passage, and fill in the blanks with the missing information.老师意见:1. Honestly, no one respects no one. You can be the number-one team. No one’s going to respect that.”Arenas is a local hero in Washington D.C., where he has helped turn the Washington Wizards into a playoff-caliber team, but he has not been considered among the elite players in professional basketball. Until this year, when he hasbeen arguably the hottest player in the NBA, leading the Wizards to one of the best records in the Eastern Conference. This season the 25-year-old Arenas seems to be scoring at will. He has so far made 11 last-second “buzzer beater” shots, scored a career-high 60 points in one game, and was named the Conference Player of the Month for December. Why is he suddenly so hot?“I think winning. You know, we’re winning. You know, that December we had was a great December... for me and for the team. Last year I didn’t really hit the stride until after All-Star break. So you know, I think early winning successes have boosted me.”Wizards coach Eddie Jordan says, while winning may draw more media attention to Arenas, he is no different than in the past. “Gilbert is, you know, he is the same to me. He’s just scoring more, that’s all. He’s always been this way. He’s always been competitive. He’s always taken the bull by the horns and been aggressive.”Until now, superstars such as Cleveland’s Lebron James, Miami’s Dwyane Wade and Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant have overshadowed Arenas, who was the 31st player selected in the 2001 NBA draft.Washington Times sports columnist Tom Knott says the experts did not expect Arenas to reach basketball’s top echelon. “Arenas, for whatever reason, is one of those guys throughout his career who has been overlooked. I mean, he was a second-round pick. He wasn’t highly recruited out of high school. You know, he came in the NBA, you know, played some his rookie season, you know, he is just an odd character, off-beat characters.”Arenas have a quirky or eccentric reputation both on and off the court. His home has special air-conditioning equipment that thins the air to simulate a high-altitude environment, and he throws his jersey into the stands at the end of every game. As a free agent he even flipped a coin to choose which NBA team he would play for. That’s how he ended up in Washington.Teammate Antawn Jamison says Arenas is also known for training harder and longer than anyone else. “I recall his rookie year he was in the gym two or three o’clock in the morning, w orking on his game. And still, to this day, he is the first one in and the last one to leave. So that’s the major reason why he’s at this point in his career. And he’s one of the best in the league, also.”Tom Knott agrees that Arenas’ work ethic is the re ason for his success.“It’s a cliché in sports: guy works hard”, says Knott, “And half the time it is just bogus. They’re not really working that hard. They’re not probably working as hard as you and me. You know, they’re going to practice for 2 hours a nd... They got 22 hours to kill. That’s not hard working. For those few unscrupulous competitors it is a question of victory at all costs. There have been cheats at the Olympics since the earliest days of the modern games. In 1904 the runner Fred Lorz won the marathon but was disqualified when it transpired his manager had driven him half the race in a car.Other cheats have turned out to have hidden qualities that helped them succeed. In Berlin 1936, Dora Ratjen came fourth in the women’s high jump event. Nothing unusual about that you might say, but Dora was really Hermann and “she” was actually a man!The same ruse was used by a number of gender-bending athletes untilcompulsory sex-testing was introduced in 1964, although such tests have now been abandoned as undignified and humiliating. In more recent years cheating athletes and their trainers have resorted to doping to improve sporting performance, and have provoked a crisis in sport with some of the biggest names in sport being disqualified, stripped of their medals, and even jailed for using illegal chemical substances such as steroids. The 2004 Athens Olympics saw more than 20 athletes disqualified from the games after testing positive for banned substances. Will we see even more scandals in Beijing 2008? It seems inevitable since a number of athletes have already been banned or withdrawn from the games before they even began. But some sports figures have called for even harder measures to be taken against drug cheats. Ten-time Olympic medal winner Carl Lewis has called for doping to become a crime throughout the world. “I would change the law. If you test positive, why can’t it be illegal?”题目:1.According to the old England adage, for individual sportsman and woman, what should matter the most in the Olympics?文本:A) the highest reward from the competitionB) the full performance in the competitionC) the sounding environment of the competitionD) the fairness and justice of the competition你的答案:正确答案:B得分:老师意见:题目:2.Why was Fred Lorz disqualified of the championship in 1904 Olympics?文本:A) Because he took illegal drugs in order to improve sporting performance.B) Because his manager gave him a ride half the race.C) Because he quit during the race.D) Because his car bumped into the side of the road.你的答案:正确答案:B得分:老师意见:题目:3.According to the passage, what kinds of measures have NOT been taken to prevent cheating in Olympic Games?文本:A) being disqualifiedB) being stripped of their medalsC) being barred from taking part in Olympics againD) being put behind the bars你的答案:正确答案:C得分:老师意见:2.Exercise 2: Listen to Passage Two and answer each question by giving the best choice.老师意见:Cricket without BoundariesTHE HOST: “Cricket without Boundaries”, is a UK based charity, set up by three cricket university friends to help communities across the world affected by conflict and HIV/AIDS. Simon Hards is also a part of the project and he’s been telling the BBC’s Richard Fleming how it works.Simon Hards: The idea of “Cricket without Boundaries” is really to try and u secricket as a tool to bring communities together. And so that’s all about going into communities that might not necessarily have seen cricket before, and using cricket and delivering cricket as a sport to really bring those various people from the community together. In October 2005, the three of them basically began a trip from Cairo to Cape Town going through a variety of different countries delivering this program “Cricket without Boundaries”. So they spent about I think 7 months going down through the country affecting somewhere 3000 children on the way. Richard Fleming: And what is your role? You are going out to Kenya later in the year, have you got any idea at this stage what is going to be required from you? Is it a case of coaching? Is it a case of taking goods and material out there? What are you gonna be doing?Simon Hards: The program over the time in November is a three-week program. And what happens is you spend a week at each different location and start off the week by actually delivering coach education course to some adults in that area so they become qualified coaches under an ICC qualification. Then throughout the week we support those coaches and delivering coach within schools and within the locality and then finish up with a festival at the end of it. Then before we leave, we leave amount of equipment there, so the idea is that it’s sustainable. So, we don’t just go, do some cricket coach and leave. We go in and provide them with some skills to actually to coach cricket, the adults. And then leave some equipment so they can deliver cricket once we’ve gone.Richard Fleming: And there are some big names that have endorsed it: Andrew Flintoff and former Monty Python star, Michael Palin who he himself is no stranger to traveling certainly a round Africa. It’s still in its infancy though, “Cricket without Boundaries”, I suppose you guys think you can make a difference, using cricket as a tool.Simon Hards: Yeah, definitely, I think from the first project they did in Cairo and Cape Town it’s sh own that they can make a difference and they did make a difference. And what’s going to happen in November and onwards is really just a sort of an extension of what they’ve already done. They’ve really realized that it works, so they are looking to build on that and really have an impact in Africa.题目:1.What kind of organization is “Cricket without Boundaries”?文本:。

Asian markets downIn Asia, Japan’s market was closed Monday for a national holiday but elsewhere, there was not much to be optimistic about.Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was down for a fifth straight day, dropping nearly three percent. The South Korean market lost two percent, dragged down by an announcement by carmaker Hyundai that it would cut production by at least 25 percent at its domestic plants. Here in Europe, similar worries kept most shares on the downside with large energy stocks taking the biggest hits ascrude oil fell below the $40-a-barrel mark.US unemployment rate also troublesomeMeanwhile, rising unemployment in the U.S. and elsewhere around the world is forcing some governments to act now. Here in Britain, Prime Minister Gordon Brown has pledged to spend at least $750 million to try to stem growing unemployment caused by the worldfinancial crisis.“I t is our determination that Britain can lead the world in showing what we can do to help those who become unemployed and what we can also do to create the jobs of the future. And I believe we can do it working in partnership. In a January 10 radio address, Mr. Obama said his plan to inject billions of dollars into the economy will create from three to four million newjobs over two years."90 percent of these jobs will be created in the private sector. The remaining 10 percent are mainly public sector jobs we save, like the teachers, police officers, firefighters and others who provide vital services to our communities," he said. The Obama stimulus plan will be a combination of government spending and tax cuts, proposals that will soon be debated in congress. A year ago the Bush administration and Congress implemented a much smaller $168 billion stimulus that did boost economic growth for a short time, before the economy resumed the slide that began in December 2007. That first stimulus plan, combined with big spending on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has pushed the government budget into deep deficit. Even before the planned Obama stimulus, the U.S. government was projected to be incurring a $1.2 trillion-dollar deficit in the current fiscal year. That is an amount equal to eight percent of economic output. Kevin Hasset, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, believes government spending is out of control."The deficit next year, if we pass the Obama stimulus plan, will be larger than the size of government when Bush was elected, in nominal dollar terms," he said.Martin Baily, chief economist to former President Bill Clinton, worries whether foreigners will continue to buy the Treasury debt needed to fund the rapidly growing government deficit."I think that is a danger. I said at the beginning of my comments that it is quite uncertain where the economy is going. It is possible that it will turn around more quickly and strongly than, say, the current [Bush] administration's economic advisors think it will. In which case, the Fed [central bank] will be, you know, as scrambling like crazy. There's a sort of rein back in some of thismoney that it has put out there," said Baily. At a conference about the stimulus plan on Monday, speakers including Hassett and Baily, expressed concern about the eventual inflationary impact of both greatly increased government spending and rapid increases in the money supply. Most economists, however, agree that the unprecedented severity of the credit squeeze and global slowdown requires extraordinary measures to maintain consumer purchasing power.题目:1.According to Obama' plan, 90 percent of these jobs will be created in the private sector. Their most audacious and significant attack to date came on Saturday with the capture of the Saudi-owned Sirius Star and its crew of 25 (including two Britons) which was taken 450 nautical miles (830km) off the coast of Kenya. The move was described as "unprecedented" by the US Navy due to the size of the vessel and the distance of the attack from the pirates' usual theatre of operations; the Sirius Star is the biggest ship taken by pirates so far, weighing three times more than an American aircraft carrier and capable of carrying 2m barrels of oil, valued at around $100m (683m Yuan). The pirates, who are often armed with AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades, usually hijack ships in the Gulf of Aden using powerful speedboats to approach merchant ships which they board using grappling hooks and rope ladders.Once the crew has been taken hostage, the pirates direct the ship to a port in Somalia where the crew and boat are held until a ransom is paid. There are currently 14 ships and 268 crew being held in pirate-friendly Somali ports.Given that senior UN officials estimate that the pirates earn more than $100m (683m Yuan) a year from ransom payments made by ship owners, many ask why more military interventions don't take place.NATO warships are in the area but US Navy officials have told the BBC they can "not be everywhere". That said, an Indian Navy frigate attacked and sank a Somali pirate ‘mother ship' on Wednesday morning after coming under fire. Most hijackings, however, do end peacefully although it can be a lengthy process. On Wednesday the Hong Kong ship MV Great Creation and its crew of 25 Chinese and one Sri Lankan were released after two monthsof captivity.题目:1.Somali pirates have been successful in most of the hijackings.文本:你的答案:F正确答案:F得分:5.00题目:2.The pirates' capture of the British Sirius Star is the biggest ship taken by pirates so far.文本:你的答案:F正确答案:F得分:5.00题目:3.The pirates often hijack ships in the Gulf of Aden.文本:你的答案:T正确答案:T得分:5.00题目:4.Once the crew has been taken hostage, the pirates would not release the crew and boat until a ransom is paid.文本:你的答案:T正确答案:T得分:5.00题目:5.There are currently many ships and UN officials being held in Somali ports.文本:你的答案:F正确答案:F得分:5.00题目: Navy officials have said that they cannot guarantee the safety of the ships.文本:你的答案:T正确答案:T5.00题目:7.The Hong Kong ship MV Great Creation and its crew was released after two days of captivity.文本:你的答案:F正确答案:F得分:5.002.Exercise 2: Focus-listening: Listen to the passage and fill in the blanks with the missing information.1. There are obvious “social contradictions” of globalization (MacEwan, 1996) and controversial economic consequences (Aaronson, 2001). Perhaps the most damaging social contradiction of globalization is its impact on democracy by limiting people's power to exercise political control over their economic lives because the power of government is limited in regulating private business. Critics argue that the globalization of business contributes to the decline of the power of labor as well as to the decline of small business as a result of its inability to compete in the marketplace (Harrison, 1984). The spread of free-market capitalism aggravates hostilities between the national ethnic majorities and the market-dominant minorities (Chua, 2003). Whether Jews in post-Communist Russia or the Chinese in many Southeast Asian nations, such minorities vastly outperform the indigenous majorities in production and consumption. It results in the rise of national¬ism, ethnic tension and scapegoating.

All eyes were on Corpus Christi‟s captain, Gail Trimble, who had been dubbed “the greatest contestant ever”, as she almost single-handedly won their place in the final, earning two-thirds of her team‟s points. But in what turned out to be a tightly-fought match, other team members, including chemist Sam Kay, scored some vital points. At the gong, Corpus Christi was victorious but the trophy wasn‟t theirs for long.It emerged that by the time of the final Sam Kay was no longer a student; he had graduated and started work as an accountant, but hadn‟t realized he couldn‟t compete. On Monday the BBC announced the team was being disqualified, and the trophy handed to Manchester, who paid tribute to their opponents, saying they were sad to have won in such circumstances. But the dramatic highs and lows of Corpus Christi‟s game seem certain to make them one of the most memorable teams not to have won University Challenge.题目:1.Which university was the winning team at last?文本:你的答案:正确答案:Manchester University得分:老师意见:题目:2.Why were the team disqualified?文本:你的答案:正确答案:A student of the team, Sam Kay was no longer a student; he had graduated and s tarted work as an accountant, so he couldn‟t compete.得分:老师意见:2.Passage Two:Summary: Direction: Listen to the passage and summarize it.老师意见:Music in SchoolsCan you play a musical instrument? Where did you learn to play it? If you were a pupil in a British school, you would most probably learn at school. Approximately 25% of British pupils learn an instrument. What‟s more, of the 75% that don‟t, 40% would like to. But what instruments do the pupils learn to play? Traditionally, school children learnt classical instruments, such as the piano or violin. This is still true today. Younger children often learn the recorder. As they get older, they start to play the violin or piano. In fact, nearly one out of five music students is learning the violin. The piano, or keyboard, is more popular with older children at secondary school. However, things are changing. More pupils than ever before are now learning the guitar. As many as 16% of pupils learning an instrument are strumming its strings. Paul McManus, the Chief Executive of the MusicIndustries Association told the Telegraph newspaper that new British band like Franz Ferdinand, the Arctic Monkeys and Razor light had made playing the guitar …cool‟ again. This, perhaps, is why more children are now learning the guitar. British schools do not just offer lessons for instruments. All pupils learn music together as a class. These classes have been changing, too. In the past, the focus of classes was very much Western classical music. But the classes now cover a far wider range of styles, including folk music and world music. In arecent study by Keele University, 64% of boys and 70% of girls said they enjoy music lessons as a class. They like singing, playing instruments and find the lessons fun. Many schools have orchestras and put on concerts each term. It is alsocommon for pupils themselves to form their own bands, copying their rock and pop heroes. In conclusion, music plays a big part in British schools. Pupils can study an instrument, play music together as a class and even take part in concerts and plays.题目:1.Listen to the passage and summarize it.文本:你的答案:正确答案:Pupils in British can learn various kinds of musical instruments at school. Airport security can put bags in x-ray machines, open them up to look inside, or use advanced machinery that that check traces of chemicals often used in explosives. But checking people's bodies isn't so easy. A TSA initiative that began last September to rigorously frisk more people led to dozens of sexual harassment complaints. So the TSA turned to technology installing what looks like a longer, more complex walk-through metal detectors in nine airports around the country.Jose Ralls is the TSA director from McCarran International in Las Vegas.Jose Ralls: The machine actually will talk to the individual, telling them to stand inside and wait, and as soon as they are cleared, it will tell them to proceed. From a distance, Mr. Ralls watches one airport passenger go through the process.Jose Ralls: Now he knows to go on through, and he just waits, and as soon as the air is analyzed he will be allowed to proceed forward. The machine blasts air downward and across whoever inside the portal. Mr. Ralls says that often startles people.Jose Ralls: That's why our focus out there is to explain to them what will be taking place, the noise that they will be hearing. The way it's supposed to work is that suspicious particles on clothing and exposed skin are blasted towards the floor -- where, within seven seconds, the machine can detect 40 types of explosives. If any are found, security is alerted.According to the manufacturer, Smith Detection, the portals also have less than 1% error rate. Company vice president Mark Lastra says this technology is commonly used elsewhere.Smith Detection: Mostly highly controlled facilities, sensitive security, such as nuclear power plants and government buildings with high security needs.Along with increasing security, the TSA hopes to cut down on passenger wait times. It is collecting data from the airports in this test base to see if the machines are faster and more efficient than human inspectors. The Transportation Security Administration plans to deploy five more of these portals elsewhere in the nation by late spring. But most people's idea of a traditional Christmas involves spending a few days with their family - sometimes their extended family. The day is the most exciting for the children. They may have spent weeks or even months dreaming of the presents they want most. Since the beginning of December, they may have opened their advent calendars, finding a new festive picture, chocolate, or small gift, to count down each day until 25th December. On Christmas Eve, they hang up stockings, ready to be filled with presents by Santa Claus. Often a thank you gift of a mince pie and a glass of sherry will be left, as well as a carrot for those hungry reindeer.Christmas Day itself will be spent eating lots of goodies, opening presents from loved ones, which have been waiting under the Christmas tree, and for most adults, drinking plenty of booze.A Christmas lunch of roast turkey with all the trimmings is the main event, complete with crackers, and paper party hats. The meal will finish off with Christmas pudding, a steamed fruit pudding. For some, a church service, or the Queen's speech on television will be part of the family custom. For most, the afternoon and evening will be spent playing board games, or perhaps watching a family film on TV.After the excitement of the big day, most families are happy to spend Boxing Day quietly enjoying their presents, and eating the Christmas leftovers, for example a turkey curry. Then we can all forget about Christmas until next year… well until next September.题目:1.Most people's idea of a traditional Christmas involves:文本:A) go on holidayB) go to a restaurant for lunchC) spend the day with friendsD) spend a few days with their familyD正确答案:D得分:15.00题目:2.On Christmas Eve, what do children hang up to receive presents from Santa Claus?文本:A) Christmas treesB) StockingsC) Small boxesD) Shoes你的答案:B正确答案:B得分:15.00题目:3.On Christmas Day, for most adults, what do they usually drink?文本:A) boozeB) waterC) drinks without alcoholD) milk你的答案:A正确答案:A得分:15.00题目:4.What is NOT the typical food for the Christmas lunch?文本:A) roast turkeyB) Christmas puddingC) steamed fruit puddingD) Ice-creamsD正确答案:D得分:15.002.Passage two exercise: Direction: Listen to the passage and decide whether the following statements are true or false, write T for true and F for false.Merry Christmas from the China TeamThis week we are talking directly to you to tell you all about our Christmas and New Year Plans.Firstly, let's hear from Alison, the editor of the China Team, who is having a family Christmas followed by a wild New Year:"For New Year, I'm taking a trip to Hamburg in Germany. I am going to a New Year's party in a restaurant; there'll be a gourmet menu with champagne and then dancing and fireworks at midnight outside. In Germany they like to let off fireworks that bang loudly," says Alison.Emily, our broadcast assistant, is looking forward to some traditional Christmas fare with her family after exchanging presents."Before dinner we give each other presents around the Christmas tree. For dinner we eat all the traditional food such as turkey, potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and Christmas pudding; and after dinner we play party games, eat chocolates, sweets, nuts, and drink wine," says Emily. But what about our Chinese colleagues, how do they celebrate at this time of year? Producer Helen has a baby boy, who can complicate Christmas."I'm spending this Christmas with my family at my home in London. It's going to be my son Leonard's second Christmas, so we have made a bit of effort putting up a fewbaby-friendly decorations in our flat."We've got a few pots of poinsettias which are big red flowers with a very Christmas feel, and there are no prickly needles, so Leonard is safe from causing disasters," says Helen. As for our writer Diarmuid, he is flying to France to visit his family there for a gastronomic yuletide celebration."Having Christmas in France means there will be a fantastic variety of delicious French wines to enjoy. Who knows? I might even bring some back for the team," he says.题目:1.Alison, the editor is taking a trip to Hamburg in Germany.文本:你的答案:正确答案:T得分:8.00题目:2.Emily, our broadcast assistant, is looking forward to some traditional Christmas fare with her family.文本:你的答案:T正确答案:T得分:8.00题目:3.For Emily, after dinner, they give each other presents around the Christmas tree.文本:你的答案:F正确答案:F得分:8.00题目:4.Producer Helen has a baby girl, who can complicate Christmas.文本:你的答案:F正确答案:F得分:8.00题目:5.Our writer Diarmuid is flying to France to visit his family there.文本:你的答案:T正确答案:T8.00听力任务1.Exercise 1: Listening for Specific Facts: Direction: Listen to the passage and decide whether the following statements are true or false, write T for true, F for false.Have Students Been Tricked?1st April is a day to be careful, or you could easily get tricked by someone. It's April Fool's Day, a day when people traditionally like to try to make a fool of someone else and laugh at them. There are lots of theories surrounding the origins of the day, but one explanation is connected with the change in the calendar in the 16th century, which meant that 1st April was no longer the beginning of the year. Those who still celebrated the New Year on 1st April were called fools. So what kind of pranks do people play on April Fool's Day? Well, there are lots of simple tricks that you can play on your friends. For example, you could wear a black sweater and pull a piece of white thread through it, so that people try to pull it off. You could change the time on someone's alarm clock so that they're late for work. Or glue a coin to the floor and see how many people try to pick it up.All these are small-scale practical jokes which you might play on one other person or a few people. But there's also a tradition of large companies attempting to fool a lot of people. For example a burger restaurant once claimed that they were introducing aleft-handed burger! In particular, the media often try to make people believe something which is not true. Newspapers publish some ludicrous stories every year, although some of them are actually true. It's entertaining to try to guess which stories are true and which are fake. In the April Fool's stories, they often include a clue to the fact that it's a joke. For example the name of an 'expert' quoted in the article might be an anagram of 'April Fool'.Radio and television programs have often fooled many people by broadcasting reports which are untrue. One program announced the invention of an amazing new weight-loss product - water which contained minus calories! And one of the most famous hoaxes ever was broadcast by the BBC itself in 1957! A very serious news program called Panorama reported on the poor spaghetti harvest in Switzerland, and showed pictures of farmers picking spaghetti from trees! Hundreds of people were taken in and wrote to the BBC asking how to grow their own spaghetti.题目:1.In the 16th century, 1st January was the beginning of the year.文本:你的答案:F正确答案:F得分:6.00题目:2.Actually in western countries, very few people play jokes on April Fool's Day.文本:你的答案:F正确答案:F得分:6.00题目:3.There's also a tradition of large companies attempting to fool a lot of people on April Fool's Day.文本:你的答案:T正确答案:T得分:6.00题目:4.The media never tries to make people believe something which is not true.文本:你的答案:F正确答案:F得分:6.00题目:5.Radio and television programs have also fooled many people by broadcasting reports which are untrue.文本:你的答案:T正确答案:T得分:6.002.Exercise 2: Focus-listening: Direction: Listen to the passage and fill in the blanks with the missing informationThere are lots of 1. surrounding the origins of the day, but one explanation is connected with the change in the 2. in the 16th century, which meant that 1st April was no longer the beginning of the year. He was a veteran of the US Civil War and his wife died giving birthto their sixth child. He raised six children alone without remarrying, which was undoubtedly unusual back in those days. His daughter, Sonora Dodd, realized when she was an adult what her father had sacrificed for his children. It was in the early 1900s and she was actually at church one day, listening to a sermon on Mother's Day. She thought there should also be a Father's Day celebration. And so the tradition was born, on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary of Sonora's father's death. Britain took the idea of Father's Day from the American celebration and it has been celebrated officially since the 1970s.Father's Day is never quite such the big commercial event that Mother's Day is, probably because it hasn't been in existence for so long. But what do British people do for Father's Day?Well, most people would buy their fathers a card. The card would probably have a nice message in it saying what a great Dad their father is. Some people do buy presents as well.Popular gifts for Dads are probably ties, chocolates or socks because these are things that Dads can always use even if they don't want them. In the run-up to Father's Day, or indeed Mother's Day, there will be adverts on the TV giving us ideas of CDs or gadgets we can buy. Card shops will be full of mugs or pens and similar merchandise with ‘World's Greatest Dad' written on them. Some families might do things together to celebrate Father's Day like going for a meal. As a special treat, British people might give their Dad a bit of a rest - make him a cup of tea, or even wash his car and mow the lawn to make him feel really appreciated.题目:1.Which one has been a very popular and well celebrated festival in the UK for a very long time, Father's Day or Mother's Day? _____________文本:你的答案:Mother's Day正确答案:Mother's Day得分:20.00题目:2.Which day is Father's Day? The four weeks before Christmas are called Advent, and are traditionally celebrated in churches by lighting a candle each Sunday during Advent.Nowadays, many people in Britain are not very religious, but they still celebrate Christmas. But watch out - the preparations begin long before Advent. In fact as early as September or October, you start to see signs that Christmas is on the way.The first places to tell us that we should be thinking about Christmas are the shops. People in Britain spend on average over £600 (around $1000) per person on Christmas every year, and the shops encourage people to spend more and more.Shops put up Christmas decorations and play cheesy Christmas songs or carols; and some shop workers wear Christmas hats. Some big shops on Regent Street and Oxford Street in London create wonderful displays in their windows with moving characters, falling snow, colorful lights and music. So what do people buy in preparation for Christmas? Well, Christmas decorations;Christmas cards to send to your friends and relatives; presents for your loved ones and wrapping paper to wrap them up with. And of course food! Apart from the special Christmas dinner of roast turkey or goose, people buy lots of chocolates, nuts and snacks for everyone to enjoy. But the children are the most excited that Christmas is coming. They start making lists of presents they would like, and give them to their parents, or send them to Santa Claus. In December, they can also open their Advent calendars.Advent calendars are a way of counting down to Christmas. They have a window to open for every day from 1st - 24th December (Christmas Eve).A basic Advent calendar has a Christmassy picture behind each window, but the children's favourite is usually a chocolate Advent calendar, with a chocolate for every day of the month.
