文学期末One of my favorite American novel is “Sister Carrie”. I read its Chinese version when I was in middle school. The author of the book is Theodore Dreiser, a famous realistic writer in American literature history. Realism follows the rule of nature “survival of the fittest”. “Sister Carrie” is a representative of realism, which describes a poor countryside girl’s life change after her arrival to Chicago.Carrie was born in a poor family, but she has a dream of happy life. She came to Chicago to get jobs to change her life. Carrie’s sister who has been in Chicago for years does not show much welcome to her sister, which makes Carrie feel lonely and unhappy. Carrie’s life was hard with low wages. After a period of time, she can no longer put up with such king of life. She cohabited with a salesman named Drouet, a young playboy who first meets Carrie in the train to Chicago. Drouet offered Carrie a easier life than before. However, Carrie was soon attracted by his friend, a manger of a hotel named Hurstwood.Hurstwood was also attracted by Carrie, and he cheated Carrie about his marriage. Carrie becomes his lover. However, truth will come to light soon or later. Their relationship is discovered by Hurstwood”s wife and Droute. Hurstwood went to New York with Carrie after the theft of a huge sum of money.。

Style and genre
At the urging of his journalist friend Arthur Henry, Dreiser began writing his manuscript in 1899. He frequently gave up on it but Henry urged him to continue. From the outset, his title was Sister Carrie, though he changed it to The Flesh and the Spirit while writing it; he restored the original name once complete. Dreiser had difficulty finding a publisher for Sister Carrie. Doubleday & McClure Company accepted the manuscript for publication but it was withdrawn after the publisher's wife declared it too sordid. Dreiser insisted on publication and 1,008 copies were printed on November 8, 1900. The book was not advertised and only 456 copies sold.[6] However, Frank Norris, who was working as a reader at Doubleday, sent a few copies to literary reviewers.

Factory workers, however, not only earned low incomes, but they also worked long hours. Consequently, a wide division existed between the wealthy and the poor. • Throughout Sister Carrie, the distinction between social classes is obvious. The clothes people wear, the homes in which they live, and the activities in which they are involved distinguish the rich from the poor.
• Drouet discovers he has been cuckolded, Carrie learns that Hurstwood is married, and Hurstwood’s wife, Julia, learns from an acquaintance that Hurstwood has been out driving with another woman and deliberately excluded her from the Elks theatre night. Carrie soon embarks on a quest for work to pay rent to her sister and her husband, and takes a job running a machine in a shoe factory. Before long, however, she is shocked by the coarse manners of both the male and female factory workers, and the physical demands of the job, as well as the squalid factory conditions, begin to take their toll. She also senses Minnie and Sven's disapproval of her interest in Chicago's recreational opportunities, particularly the theatre. One day, after an illness that costs her job, she encounters Drouet on a downtown street. Once again taken by her beauty, and moved by her poverty, he encourages her to dine with him, where, over sirloin and asparagus, he persuades her to leave her sister and move in with him. To press his case, he slips Carrie two ten dollar bills, opening a vista of material possibilities to her. The next day, he rebuffs her feeble attempts to return the money, taking her shopping at a Chicago department store and securing a jacket she covets and some shoes. That night, she writes a good-bye note to Minnie and moves in with Drouet.

But her lover, Hurstwood ultimately joins the homeless of New York.Carrie was born in a working family of a small town, so she was eager for the luxurious life in a big city. All thing about rich life is best in her heart. As arrived in Chicago, she immediately fell ashamed about her old clothes and a small suitcase that showing her humble status. she recognized that she was just a peasantry outside the city because of her low position. She has more strong desire to be a rich person due to the forceful inferiority complex. Sometimes she lose all thing just for new life. At first, she met many difficulties, but have a strong desire to be wealthy. So, she sell her virginity. It is a common phenomenon in society. Luxurious life has great allure to many people. Such a phenomenon reflects the prevalence of mammonism in our material society. Carrie is the embodiment of the typical Americans who are morally adrift in the brutal, unprincipled and materialistic world.She was blindness to pursue better life. Her love to Hurstwood was based on money and social status. Her experience of frustration made her abandon love. She sequentially struggled for her better life. One of my favorite American novel is “Sister Carrie”. I read its Chinese version when I was in middle school. The author of the book is Theodore Dreiser, a famous realistic writer in American literature history. Realism follows the rule of nature “survival of the fittest”. “Sister Carrie” is a representative of realism, which describes a poor countryside girl’s life change after her arrival to Chicago.
Carrie was born in a poor family, but she has a dream of happy life. She came to Chicago to get jobs to change her life. Carrie’s sister who has been in Chicago for years does not show much welcome to her sister, which makes Carrie feel lonely and unhappy. Carrie’s life was hard with low wages. After a period of time, she can no longer put up with such king of life. She cohabited with a salesman named Drouet, a young playboy who first meets Carrie in the train to Chicago. Drouet offered Carrie a easier life than before. However, Carrie was soon attracted by his friend, a manger of a hotel named Hurstwood.
Hurstwood was also attracted by Carrie, and he cheated Carrie about his marriage. Carrie becomes his lover. However, truth will come to light soon or later. Their relationship is discovered by Hurstwood”s wife and Droute. Hurstwood went to New York with Carrie after the theft of a huge sum of money.。
