❖ B. Picking out some key words by scanning the text. In taking a test, you can omit this step because of the time limit.
❖ C. Anticipating or guessing that you have any background knowledge or frame about the text, that the first one or two sentences are the topic sentence, and that the text will be developed in a certain way, thus forming its possible theme or main idea.
Anticipation
Anticipation is meant thinking about the theme or contents of a text before reading it by simply looking at its first few words, as in test texts, and at its title, accompanying tables or pictures as in other essay books, and by using one’s prior knowledge. Through anticipation, readers are able to get a quick idea of what a text is about, in what style it may be written, and what kinds of words may be used, and think about whether you have any prior background knowledge or frame about it, so as to become ready to read it or more close to it, thus quickly forming a concept. Usually, the steps for anticipation will be three.

Read by anticipation and prediction
❖ Reading is an active and cognitive process—an activity involving constant guesses that are later rejected or confirmed. To put it more clearly, active and cognitive reading involves two aspects: making anticipations before reading a text, and making predictions when reading it.
❖ A. Simply looking at the layout of a text or a book, content, preface, pictures, tables contained and something else such as its length. In taking a test, simply looking at the first few words or the first one or two sentences.
