According to the Records of the Grand Historian, Qu Yuan was a minister of the State of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period. He advocated for promoting the selection of talents and empowering the country, strengthening the military, and advocating for the alliance of Qi and resisting Qin. However, he faced strong opposition from nobles such as Lan, and was ultimately demoted to the Yuan and Xiang river basins. In 278 BC, the State of Qin conquered the capital of Chu, and Qu Yuan committed suicide by throwing himself into the river during his exile. In memory of Qu Yuan, people eat Zongzi, race dragon boats, hang wormwood and wear sachets on the fifth day of May every year.

On the day of the Dragon Boat Festival White Snake wished to stay home .Her husband prepared, according to Fa Hai`s instruction, some realgar wine, as this was a tradition during the Dragon boat festival. White Snake, thinking her magic would protect her from the effects of the realgar wine accepted a cup. After she drank the wine she became very ill and was barely able to get to her bed.

At last, however, he was so discouraged(气馁) that he had to end his life by throwing himself into the Miluo River, It is said that the people rushed out in their boats to try to save him when they heard the terrible news, but it was too late . Also, they were so sad that they threw rice in the water to feed Qu Yuan’s spirit(精神),so now we “zong-zi”for us to entertain(娱乐) friends, especially (尤 其是)children , during the Dragon Boat Festival

T 吃粽子的习惯 he Custom of Eating Zongzi
It is a tradition to eat Zongzi, pyramid(金字塔)-shaped (形 状)dumplings made of sticky(黏黏的) rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, with different fillings added for interest . According to one popular story, such dumplings were thrown into the river as food for fish and shrimp(虾) to keep term fro, eating QuYuan’s body .These dumplings now are boiled(煮) and eaten on the holiday.

In the fifth Lunar month,every household(家用) stared hanging red ornaments,putting out cattail dragon or mugwort tiger, and decorating(点缀，装饰) windows with auspicious(吉祥) red paper toad(蟾蜍).Young girls cut letter”fu”in layers for good luck;and small kids wore bright red toad made of broomcorn(高粱),garlic(大蒜),These customs are still widely practiced today as folk festivities on the Dragon on Boat Day.
The customs vary a lot in different areas of the country, but most of the families would do like that.
