The Double Ninth Festival

I never forget the day when I walked to our community center to find my grandmother, then I saw a lot of pictures hung on the wall. I couldn't help to asking the village head to get some information, then the village head answered with surprise, "You are a university student, why don't you know the Pictures of Twenty-Four Stories of Filial Piety? And do you know the The Double Ninth Festival? "At that time I felt so ashamed that I was addicted to the modern device and neglected the traditional factor especially the Chongyang Festival.

Nowadays, people pay attention to the western festival, they may know the The Double Seventh Festival but few people know the The Double Ninth Festival which also known as Chongyang Festival, is held on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. It is also known as the Senior Citizens' Festival. Why do we call it as Chongyang Festival? According to records from the mysterious book Yi Jing, the number 6 belonged to the Yin character while the number 9 was thought to be of the Yang character. So, on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, both day and month are Yang characters. Therefore, the festival was named the Double Ninth Festival.

Why we said it is a traditional festival? The history can be dated to the Eastern Han Dynasty, at that time, a devil inhabited the Nu River which caused disease in the neighbouring people. The parent of a young man, named Hengjing, died because of the devil's magic. In order to rid the people of the devil, Hengjing went through extraordinary lengths to find an immortal to teach him swordsmanship in order to expel the devil. On the eighth day of the ninth lunar month, the immortal told Hengjing that the next day the devil would appear and he was to go back to get rid of the devil and the disease. Taking a bag of dogwood and some chrysanthemum wine, Hengjing returned to his hometown. In the morning of the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, Hengjing led all the villagers who were each holding a piece of dogwood leaf and a cup of Chrysanthemum to the nearest mountain. At noon, when the devil came out from the Nu River, the devil suddenly stopped because of the fragrance emitted from the dogwood and the chrysanthemum wine. At that moment Hengjing used the sword to battle the devil for a few rounds and won.

What will we do on Chongyang Festival? The Double Ninth Festival is usually perfect for outdoor activities. Many people go hiking and climbing in the country, some will carry a spray of dogwood in north area. In Yunnan province, I noticed few of people celebrate it, we just know it's a day for old people and a day to respect the elderly and to let them enjoy themselves so that we never care about it.
